Lawrence Uchmanowicz isn't a guy you're likely to know. He spent his early career as an interrogator. As he seasoned into senior leadership, he deployed as a sergeant major for the 165th MI Bn. This deployment is unlike any other in modern history Though the battalion had an infantry company, E Co, 51st, it was D Co, that made the mark on history. Delta Company was strictly a counterintelligence asset. Then the Army started changing post cold-war to de-emphasize the tactical role for CI agents...and drastically reduce the role of interrogators. This change was happening rapidly in the summer of 1995. The company of interrogators was reduced and not back-filling. The interrogator company was shuttered and it's guidon furled. The remnants of the company were housed with D Co. Then they deployed...in a way that was never expected, and never repeated. Larry led the battalion and is on the Break It Down Show with Pete A Turner. How cool is this story. Go ahead and search for Larry Uchmanowicz? You'll find out right away...ONLY on the Break It Down Show is this story possible.
Ray Duggan is a retired counterintelligence agent. He deployed with Pete A Turner to Bosnia with Delta Company, 165th MI Battalion. Ray's experience goes far beyond the deployment to Bosnia-Herzegovina. During Ray's career he worked on the Strategic, Stractical, and Tactical missions. He wrote papers and doctrine on where CI needed to move as a profession. When we examine spies on the Break It Down Show, it's Pete's experience and network that allow us to see inside the counterintelligence and other related collection disciplines. Whether it's offensive or defensive, responsive or reactionary, strategic, tactical, political, regional or international, we get the best people that don't often speak about the job. This ought to be a great one.

We heard last episode about Operation Meebos and the shooting down of a Puma with the loss of 15 men. The SADF was now determined to follow-up the company of SWAPO who'd been based near the Mui river and who's Anti-aircraft guns had delivered such a potent message. The Alouette gunships were circling the area on that day in August, 1982, and they reported the location of a SWAPO section about 10 kilometers away from the smouldering Puma. This was probably 30km north of Cuvelai along the Calonga River and an Alouette gunship under the command of legendary pilot Neall Ellis and the two gunships came under fire immediately by SWAPO firing what 61 Mechs Commandant Roland de Vries believes were SAM-7s. Moments later he enemy started firing with small arms, RPG-7 rockets and 14,5mm anti-aircraft guns. Ellis realised that this wasn't the same section as others reported in the area about two kilometers away. The target was spread out but there was only one escape from the SADF on the ground, which was a fording site over the Calonga River. 48 men from 32 Battalion's Delta Company were joined by a company from 61 Mech in Ratels and they were ordered to attack a SWAPO section. There were no Puma's available, they were heading to the Helicopter Administration Area from Ondangwa. So Operation Meebos ended formally on August 27th, and the SADF claimed 345 SWAPO dead, but lost 29 of their own, while the shooting down of the Puma was one of the largest single incident deaths for the SADF in the entire Border War. Earlier in May 1982 one of the most important Russians to fight in Angola had arrived to advise the MPLA government in Luanda. Lieutenant General Konstantin Kurochkin was formally known as the Chief Military Advisory to the Angolan government and was a veteran of the Soviet-Afghan war. He was also described as the most outstanding Soviet officer to serve in Angola, and followed Lieutenant General Georgy Petrovsky into the position.

In early 2019, Eric Kahle was a first sergeant assigned to an aviation maintenance company bound for Forward Operating Base (FOB) Dahlke in Afghanistan—also known as “Rocket City.” It was not long before rockets became a common occurrence for the soldiers of Delta Company and Kahle was mentally transported back to his first combat deployment in 2006 to Iraq. That deployment, which saw the loss of flight crews and friends, impacted how Kahle approached combat leadership and taking care of his soldiers. Faced with an ever-increasing threat from indirect fire, Kahle and his commander trained their soldiers how to react regardless of where they were on the FOB. On August 10, 2019, their training was tested when a rocket hit the soldiers’ housing area.

176: Derek Abby: Former U.S. Marine with three deployments to Iraq and one deployment to Afghanistan and the President and CEO of Project Recover talks about making the transition from being a young military member at age 18 to the role that education has played in his current work in locating missing military members. Derek Abby How did Derek Abby deal with his parents divorcing early on in his life and his mother dying when he was only 13? “As a 13-year-old, you don’t usually deal with it very well. You don’t have the tools for it. There is no rule book you can read or anything like that, especially back then, and it was completely unexpected. My mom was there, healthy one day, and then had a brain aneurysm and was gone the following day. So, my life was turned upside down. I was 13, completely lost my rotor and sail, didn’t really know what direction I was going to go in. I ended up going and living with my aunt and uncle.” On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Derek Abby, Former U.S. Marine with three deployments to Iraq and one deployment to Afghanistan and the President and CEO of Project Recover about how he ended up joining the Marine Corp. “I never really had aspirations of joining the military. Although, when I was young I kind of looked up to men that had served in the military and they were these role models to me in some ways. In most ways they were fantasies because they weren’t really people to me. But, I ran away to the Marine Corp. Honestly, I needed a place to go.” What You Will Learn: Even though Derek Abby didn’t grow up dreaming about being a soldier, it looked like the best option to get his life situated for success. “I was looking at the military because it was an escape. It was something to get me out of where I was. I looked to the military, and I saw the Marine Corp., and honestly like so many young people, they had the best uniforms, and it seemed like the hardest. It seemed like the biggest challenge. I found myself in the recruiters office, and that was an easy sell. Not too long after that I was in boot camp.” What was going on in the world when Derek Abby joined the military? “There was another thing that was going on. When I signed up Saddam Hussein had crossed the border into Kuwait, and we were dealing with him with Desert Storm and Desert Shield. So, he invaded on August 2nd, and on August 30th was when I signed the papers. That was kind of the extra motivation, a way to prove myself, a way to go on and play my part, do something of value, really.” Derek Abby describes what his career trajectory in the Marine Corp. was like. “I was a successful young Marine and I invested in the Marine Corp. I truly gave my heart and soul to it. In turn they invested in me. So, I got an education. I ended up getting a commission and then was commissioned to Ground Officer, actually. All Marines have to go through a six-month school called the Basic School where you learned basic infantry tactics and company-level officer stuff. While I was there, I was selected for Flight School and ended up getting sent to Flight School and became a Marine Aviator.” What exactly is a Plank Holder in the military? “It is an original member. So, when they establish a unit, the very first people in that unit are considered ‘plank holders.’ It comes from the nautical tradition, the Navy tradition of the Marine Corp., the planks of the ships. I was part of the First Battalion, which is now the First Raider Battalion. It was First Marines Special Operations Battalion when it started, and the first Delta Company over there. I started as a First Battalion Air Officer while we were building out the battalion. Then when we started Delta Company I became the Air Officer for Delta Company, and ultimately the X of Delta Company and deployed to Afghanistan.” In what way did Derek Abby connect his education to his military experience? “I wanted to examine what was the thing that was causing all of this friction for military members when they are separating, and it turns out, for the most part, beyond injuries and things like that, both mental and physical injuries. It is these intangible pieces. So it is that perceived loss of identity and exploring what other identities you hold, having those intimate relationships that you gain and maintain through shared experience, through shared hardship. All of those things going on, deployment, depending on others. Same thing growing up as an athlete, committing your life to it. Then you step out of that system and now you have to find what that new legacy is going to be. What is that new impact or what is your new purpose?” Project Recover in Action Derek Abby defines what Project Recover is and the objectives that they have as part of their overall mission. “Project Recover is a non-profit organization and we search for Americans missing in action in our previous wars. That goes all the way back to World War II. Most people don’t realise, but there are 82,000 Americans still missing in action, and when they hear POW MIA., things like that, most times they think of Vietnam and that is realistic. But, of those 82,000, 72,000 are from World War II, 7,000 are from the Korean conflict, and now less than 1,600 remain M.I.A. from the Vietnam conflict. We have done work mostly in the World War II era sites. But we have come all the way up to Desert Storm.” Finding Missing U.S. Military Personnel During this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, Derek Abby also discusses how Project Recover goes about locating missing military members. “We gather information year-round and we do search missions throughout the world based on the information and the data that we gather and we search for sites. We identify those sites. Who is associated with those sites? Traditionally we have turned that information over to the Department of Defense. Their organization is called the Defense POW MIA Accounting Agency, DPAA. They have made the decision to do recovery on those sites that we have located. But now our mission has expanded into recovery and cooperation with DPAA. So we are doing everything from initial research, searching the waters and jungles all over the world for these people who are missing.” Links to Additional Resources: Mark Pattison: markpattisonnfl.com Emilia’s Everest - The Lhotse Challenge: https://www.markpattisonnfl.com/philanthropy/ Project Recover’s website: projectrecover.org Derek Abby’s social media: Linkedin Mark Pattison: Instagram

03DEC1968: Serving as a squad leader with Delta Company, 2-7 CAV, part of the 1st Infantry Division, SGT John Holcomb was leading his men during a recon-in-force mission during Operation Sheridan Sabre. As soon as his company landed they came under intense fire from an estimated battalion sized enemy force attacking from three sides. SGT Holcomb's squad found itself in the path of the main enemy attack. Despite heavy fire, SGT Holcomb moved among his men and directed fields of fire to keep the charging enemy at bay. When his machine gunner fell, SGT Holcomb assumed the weapon and picked right back up laying into the attacking enemy fighters. As the first wave died off, SGT Holcomb treated and moved his wounded and reestablished their defensive perimeter, just in time for the second wave to kick off. Again manning the machine gun, SGT Holcomb forced the enemy to again withdraw but was severely wounded by a rocket in the process. Despite his wounds, SGT Holcomb crawled through a grass fire with rockets and mortars landing all around him, to consolidate what remained of his squad into a defensive position. The last surviving leader of the platoon, SGT Holcomb, in one of his last acts, took the radio and called in friendly artillery that broke up the final enemy attack. His fighting spirit and inspiring leadership saved the lives of countless American Soldiers that day. SGT Holcomb would die of his wounds suffered that day and would be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

The Principles of War - Lessons from Military History on Strategy, Tactics and Leadership.
We start our look at the Battle of Long Tan, which occured on the 18th August 1966, 4km east of the Australian Task Force base at Nui Dat. Outnumber 20:1, the Australians took 18 KIA and 24 WIA in one of the most important and most famous battles of the whole Australian involvement in Long Tan. Our guide through Australian Military's History most famous rubber plantation is Dave Sabben. Dave was the Platoon Commander of 12 Platoon, Delta Company on that day at Long Tan. Conscription has been used by many countries through history as they rapidly increase the size of their defence forces in response to changing strategic circumstances, circumstances that have changed quickly and require a faster response than could be achieved with the full time Defence Force. How did the Australian Defence Force mobilised for operations in Vietnam? We look at conscription and the history of professional armies. We start by looking at some of the components of a professional army and what the role of conscription is within the concept of National readiness. Professional armies are very expensive to maintain and so we look at 2 components of readiness that are used to decrease the cost of having a large standing force. How was conscription for Vietnam different to conscription in Australia during World War 2? Dave starts by talking us through the conscription process and his initial training at Kapooka. We look at the reason for the conscription in the 1960's. Dave discusses what the aim of the training program was and the skills that officers were to receive at Scheyville. How was the training program designed and how were leadership skills developed at OTU Scheyville?
