In this episode we have the honor of sitting down with Australian researcher, Ms. Carolyn Heward, lead author of “A Scoping Review of Military Culture, Military Identity, and Mental Health Outcomes in Military Personnel”. Listen in as we discuss the complexity of military culture's impact on military identity and its effect on mental health. We'll dig into the Military Identity Model (MIM) and types of identities such as loyal, warrior, hidden and disrupted. But most importantly we'll consider the clinical benefits of including military identity into case formulation, treatment planning and EBP work. As Heward says “identity work is clinical work” and we couldn't agree more. Carolyn Heward is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Psychology at James Cook University in Townsville, Queensland, Australia, where she teaches in the Master of Psychology (Clinical) program while conducting research on military identity construction and its implications for psychological wellbeing. As a Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience working with the Australian Defence Force (ADF), she brings valuable insights to the intersection of military culture and mental health, particularly through her perspective that identity work is fundamental to clinical practice. Her recent scoping review on military culture, identity, and mental health has contributed to understanding the unique challenges faced by service members, while her current doctoral research explores the construction of military identity within the ADF and its clinical implications. Drawing from her clinical experience, Carolyn's work focuses on developing integrated approaches to clinical psychology that move beyond cultural formulations to address individual identity construction. She has also contributed to public discourse on military mental health through The Conversation, publishing articles on military identity and providing analysis of the Australian Government's response to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.Resources mentioned in this episode: Carolyn Heward, Wendy Li, Ylona Chun Tie, Pippa Waterworth, A Scoping Review of Military Culture, Military Identity, and Mental Health Outcomes in Military Personnel, Military Medicine, Volume 189, Issue 11-12, November/December 2024, Pages e2382–e2393, https://doi.org/10.1093/milmed/usae276Practical for Your Practice voice mail: speakpipe.com/cdpp4pPractical for Your Practice email: cdp-podcast-ggg@usuhs.edu

Christmas and New Year's leave has been cancelled for military personnel set to cover for striking from non-uniform staff. The Defence Minister last month invoked the Defence Act, letting uniformed servicemen and woman fill the gaps. Advocacy group Mission Homefront has written to Judith Collins - saying that's unprecedented and unacceptable. Co-founder Hayden Ricketts says uniformed staff already give so much. "You know, those uniformed staff have worked their butts off during the Covid-19 response, they occupied and looked after our country and MIQ and the managed isolation facilities, they've done their best through Cyclone Gabrielle." Subheading: The Forefront Radio discusses Potential Impact on Global Security and the Risk of Escalation [January, 2024] - In what is being seen as a significant demonstration of military strength, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is reportedly gearing up for a war exercise involving approximately 90,000 military personnel. The potential scale of this exercise has prompted discussions about its implications on already strained relations between NATO and Russia, and has raised concerns about the possibility of triggering a full-blown global conflict. Sources within NATO have confirmed that the upcoming exercise, code-named "Operation Firm Resolve," aims to test the alliance's readiness and response capabilities in the face of evolving threats. Spanning several jurisdictions, the exercise is set to include a wide array of land, air, and naval operations, simulated cyberattacks, and command and control exercises. While NATO insists that this exercise is purely defensive in nature, designed to maintain its collective defense commitments, critics argue that the scale and timing of the operation may unintentionally escalate tensions with Russia. Given the recent geopolitical climate, concerns about a potential confrontation are only amplified. Relations between NATO and Russia have been strained for years, particularly since the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia in 2022…Accusations of cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, and military posturing have all contributed to the deterioration of trust and fostered an atmosphere of uncertainty and suspicion. Amid this backdrop, some experts fear that an exercise of this magnitude could inadvertently provoke a response from Russia. Although NATO has emphasized its transparent communication channels with Russia, there remains a delicate balance between sending a demonstration of strength and not escalating the situation further. Jose, a government employee and military veteran, emphasized the importance of open communication to prevent potential misunderstandings. "Constant dialogue and engagement between NATO and Russia will be crucial during this exercise to avoid any misinterpretations or miscalculations that could have severe consequences," (offline) he noted. Others believe that NATO's exercise is a necessary measure to ensure the allied forces are prepared for any potential aggression. They argue that NATO has a responsibility to reassure its member countries and strengthen their deterrence capabilities in the face of Russia's assertive behavior. As the date of the exercise draws near, the international community will be closely monitoring the situation. The potential repercussions of this high-profile operation loom large, with some cautious observers suggesting it could increase the already brewing tensions to a level that might make de-escalation difficult. Though the likelihood of this exercise directly triggering World War 3 is uncertain, it undoubtedly raises concerns regarding global security. The eventual impact of this exercise and its aftermath remain unpredictable, underlining the urgent need for international diplomacy, dialogue, and confidence-building measures to prevent any unintended consequences. While NATO members may see it as a prudent response to an uncertain world, it is essential to ensure that steps are taken to guard against potential misunderstandings and foster a cooperative environment in the interest of maintaining stability and reducing the risk of global conflict. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theforefront/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theforefront/support

On November 6, researchers at Duke University's Sanford School of Public Policy issued a report on “Data Brokers and the Sale of Data on U.S. Military Personnel” that illuminates the national security risks arising from the sale of these data. Lawfare Senior Editor Stephanie Pell sat down with the three of the report's authors: Justin Sherman, a Senior Fellow at the Sanford School of Public Policy who leads its data brokerage research project; Hayley Barton, a Master of Public Policy and Master of Business Administration student at Duke University and a former research assistant on Duke's data brokerage research project; and Brady Allen Kruse, a Master of Public Policy student at Duke University and a research assistant on Duke's data brokerage research project. They talked about the kinds of data that data brokers collect and sell about U.S. military personnel, the national security risks created by these practices, and the gaps in the law that enable this activity. They also discussed policy recommendations for the U.S. federal government to address the risks associated with data brokerage and the sale of data on former and active-duty U.S. military personnel.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Join Steve and Rebecca as they discuss this important legislation, and what you need to know to comply with it in your subrogation actions. In this essential episode tailored for our first responders and military service members, we shed light on the often-overlooked sentiment: trauma isn't a race, and it isn't a competition. The weight of service comes with unique challenges that can't be measured on a universal scale. Understanding Trauma's Individuality: Delve into the understanding that every individual's encounter with trauma is personal and unique. No two stories are alike, and neither are the emotional and psychological effects. The Perils of Comparison: While it might be human nature to compare, doing so with trauma can lead to minimizing one's own experiences, potentially hindering healing and growth. Mental Health and Service: Drawing attention to the particular stresses that first responders and military personnel face, and the significance of recognizing and addressing trauma without judging its magnitude. LEO Warrior's Role: Highlighting the importance of our community in offering support. A reminder that in our tribe, you're never alone. If you're in distress, it's imperative to reach out. The Power of Reaching In: Sometimes those who are struggling may not have the strength to ask for help. If you sense a fellow buddy in distress, take the initiative. A simple check-in can make a world of difference. The journey of understanding trauma is ongoing. Let's make it a collective effort to support one another without judgment. We have a quick bonus (emergency?) episode here to address the rampant confusion around some Congressional language that has taken the internet by storm the last couple days. On page 17 of the executive summary of the NDAA markup by the Senate Armed Services Committee, one particular sentence alarmed many of you: "Restores the Army's Physical Fitness Test (APFT) as the test of record and requires a 24month pilot program, briefing to Congress, and a one year waiting period before a new standard can be implemented." As this excerpt has made its rounds on the internet, many people clearly thought it was already official. That is far from reality. Nothing has changed, and it is important that we clear up the confusion here. This short episode will explain a bit of the context, plus a little big of bonus insight into Army fitness policy that you might not know about. You can find the EXSUM that start all of this here. You can find the House Subcommittee on Military Personnel markup, with its conflicting language, here. You can find the contents of DA PAM 611-21 (in smartbook format) here.

Satan was the first narcissist. In our fallen world, narcissists are running much of society. Consider the San Francisco Reparations Committee and their recent admission about how they came up with the $5 million per person wealth transfer to supposedly pay for the harms of slavery (but only where black people were slaves). Look at our Country having been put on the cusp of war for Ukraine, which The Party has forced us to adopt as a 51st State; instead of focusing on that, military commanders are making sure women don't object to men being in their showers and men can get their penises cut-in half. Behold the narcissism of Congresswoman Cori Bush who has married the un-licensed security guard to whom she gave $60,000 of taxpayer money while she demanded police be defunded. With these factors and examples in place, we are wise to get good at dealing with malignant narcissists. I will draw on the Bible, our years in teen and family therapy and a great book called, Don't Let Their Crazy Make You Crazy, for a framework to approach this battle. What does God say? Remember, when we are being led by malignant narcissists, they are not our enemy. It is their sin and the spiritual enemies that use their sin and illness against which we battle. Ephesians 6:1212 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.A Christians, we can bring God into the battle to help us. When we know we will have to deal with these people or the circumstances they create, we can “cope-ahead” by remembering God gives us this ability. 2 Corinthians 10:55 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.Don't Let Their Crazy Make You CrazySan Francisco Reparations Committee Chairman: No ‘Math Formula' Used to Calculate $5 Million PayoutPentagon Burdens Warfighting Commanders with New So-Called “Transgender” Policies for Military Personnel; New policies expand so-called “transgender” procedures to the service academies, allow “gender transitions” while on-duty, and mandate group shower facility use by both biological sexes if certain administrative requirements are met.
