With special guest: John O’Halloran… in conversation with Bill Kable John O’Halloran was an unlikely war hero. With the assistance of Ric Teague John tells his story for the first time in The Platoon Commander: The extraordinary story of the man who led Australia’s most decorated platoon of the Vietnam War. Coming from Tamworth in country NSW John was called up in the first conscription ballot. But before doing his compulsory medical he was involved in a street accident which badly damaged his foot which should have ruled him out as medically unfit. However with a bit of help from a local medico he got over that first hurdle and soon distinguished himself in training. John was made Platoon Commander and at the age of 21 he was sent to Vietnam. In that war-torn country he now had enemy soldiers shooting at him, trying their best to kill him. And the men under his command were dependent for their lives on his decisions under fire. Today, Scott McCarthy delves deep into the concept of psychological safety in leadership, exploring Tim Clark's four crucial stages: Belonger Safety, Learner Safety, Contributor Safety, and Challenger Safety. Through personal anecdotes from his military background, he illustrates how these principles create an environment where team members feel secure to express ideas and learn from both successes and failures. The conversation extends to the delicate balance of maintaining high standards while fostering a supportive environment, both in professional teams and family life. It specifically looks at how Australian soldiers were prepared for combat in the jungle and also looks at what makes jungle combat one of the most difficult types of terrain to fight in. As you are listening to Gary's story, compare that with the soldiers from the Second World War fighting the early jungle battles.  The legacy of those hard won lessons on the Kokoda Track can clearly be heard in Gary's story. Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Read our book, The Score That Matters https://amzn.to/3NszPAg Jack Carr is a former Navy SEAL who for 20 years led special operations teams as a Team Leader, Platoon Commander, Troop Commander, and Task Unit Commander. Jack is also the #1 New York Times Best Selling author of 8 books and his debut novel, The Terminal List, was adapted into the #1 Amazon Prime Video series starring Chris Pratt. Notes  When Jack was little, he hoped to grow up and do two things. Be a Navy SEAL and become an author. Jack's grandfather died at war. "It's in my blood." "You have to prove that you can add value to your tribe." "Great warriors run to the sound of the guns to be with their fellow service members." Commonality of the best SEAL Leaders: Trust, up and down the chain of command High character Good decision-maker: The decisions you've made in the past are your currency. Do things you don't have to do. Run with the squad, put rounds down range. You don't have to be the best at it, but you should be very good at all of the things the people you're leading are doing. Reading novels: "When I was young, I was reading for the magic in those pages." PUT IN THE WORK… Jack has been putting in the work since he was little. He read books for the magic in those pages. All of that reading has helped inform him of what great storytelling looks like. And then he PUT IN THE WORK. If you want to be a published author, you need to WRITE. It's that simple. Do the work, and get the manuscript done. And then take the next step. A lot of people want to be published authors. Not everyone wants to write. Like Ronnie Coleman said, “A lot of people want to be a bodybuilder, but nobody wants to lift these heavy weights every day.”  Mentor, Brad Thor: “Brad told me that the only difference between a published and unpublished author is that the published author doesn't quit.” Writers Block – One thing I'll share from Steven Pressfield is that he said “Hey, you never hear of a trucker getting trucker's block”. Writer's block does not exist - you just have to go do it. Books to recommend: ONCE AN EAGLE by Anton Myrer. It is advice that a wise Sam Damon shares: “You can't help what you were born and you may not have much to say about where you die, but you can and you should try to pass the days in between as a good man.” In the end that really says it all. Advice: Never miss an opportunity to make someone's day… Make that your default setting. Work to add value to others' lives. Make their day. Help them. Make introductions, LISTEN to them, offer ideas to help solve their issues

I talk with Tom about his book “Doorsteps of Hell” where he offers an honest, unembellished account of a new officer in the US Marines - fighting and surviving in the mud-sucking rice paddies and leech-infested jungles of Vietnam. Send us a textWhat can be do to stop the spread of divisiveness? How can we understand one another and seek to empathize with people who don't look like us, act like us, or even think like us? I believe this understanding is vital. One amazing veteran has founded an organization that's on the front lines of healing our fractured communities through coffee, conversation and advocacy. Join us on the S.O.S. podcast as we kick off season 3 with what this show has always represented - our service to others by talking about our most pressing issues! Jake Harriman graduated with distinction from the United States Naval Academy and served seven and a half years in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Platoon Commander in both the Infantry and Force Recon. During his military service, Jake led four operational deployments, including two combat tours in Iraq. Following his service, Jake enrolled at the Stanford Graduate School of Business to gain the business acumen he would need to follow this new direction. While at Stanford, Jake founded Nuru International to eradicate extreme poverty in the world's most unstable, vulnerable regions to help end violent extremism.Due to the desperate condition of the U.S. political system, Jake has now turned his attention to helping protect the American Democratic experiment, which he fears is on the brink of failure—a failure that would have terrible global consequences. Jake is the Founder of More Perfect Union, a veteran-led movement to heal the divide in the nation by creating meaningful connections through civics, service, and leadership. Jake has received several honors including the Unsung Hero of Compassion presented by The Dalai Lama (2014), White House Champion of Change (2014), Presidential Leadership Scholar (2015), and 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs presented by Goldman Sachs (2015). He is also a Council Member of NationSwell (2016), an Unusual VC Academy Partner (2018), and a Truman National Security Fellow (2018). Jake has been interviewed on ABC, BBC World Service, CNN, Fox Business and MSNBC's Morning Joe and received coverage in the Christian Science Monitor, Devex, Forbes, Huffington Post, The New York Times, Stanford Magazine, Fox News, and others. More Perfect Union - https://www.mpu.us/Visit my website: https://thehello.llc/THERESACARPENTERRead my writings on my blog: https://www.theresatapestries.com/Listen to other episodes on my podcast: https://storiesofservice.buzzsprout.comWatch episodes of my podcast:https://www.youtube.com/c/TheresaCarpenter76

One major trait for many great leaders is the ability to not just persevere through hard times, but create an opportunity during challenging times. Eric Kapitulik really, really knows something about that. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, where he was a four year varsity player in D1 Lacrosse, he then went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a Platoon Commander in the elite 1st Force Reconnaissance Division.  In 1999 he suffered a tremendous tragedy, when during a routine training exercise his squad's helicopter crashed where six of his fellow Marines perished. After recovering both physically and emotionally from the crash, Eric focused solely on the well being of his fallen comrades families: In an effort to raise money for a college scholarship fund set up for the children of his deceased teammates, Eric completed eight Ironman Triathlons, The Canadian Death Race Ultra Marathon, The Eco Challenge, and The American Birkebeiner Ski Marathon, and as a side quest, climbed five of the Seven Summits. On top of all this Eric enrolled in the University of Chicago after he left the Marines, and graduated with his MBA in 2005. Shortly after that in 2008 he founded The Program. The Program pulls from his experience in the Marines, and aims to provide organizations with the best personal, leadership, and culture development services worldwide.  We caught up with Eric to talk about his philosophy on developing a high performing team through grit, communication, and setting standards. We also chatted about his new book The Program: Lessons from Elite Military Units for Creating and Sustaining High Performance Leaders and Teams, which details the lessons learned from his time in the Marines and as an entrepreneur.  This is another episode you're not going to want to miss, so with that…let's bring it in!

If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be? “Failure. And more importantly why it's the best teacher and most important part of growth - but we never talk about it.”______________________With a combined 15 years experience on the frontlines of diplomacy and conflict, David Knoff's career has taken him to all corners of the globe. Specialising in remote leadership, isolation, resilience and leadership through adversity, David's story is a unique example of adventure and challenges in the harshest environments and circumstances. David's story began as a Platoon Commander in the Solomon Islands, after which, his lessons in empathy and adaptability carried him to Pakistan, where he navigated the ever-changing political landscape. He then took a sabbatical from diplomacy and worked as a freelance photographer based in Istanbul, following the stories of refugees escaping the growing conflict in Syria to the ancient history of the Mediterranean. As the conflict grew in Syria and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) threatened regional security, David was part of Australia's contribution to Operational Enduring Freedom and the international effort to defeat ISIS. Seeking a change of environment and pace but looking for a role that would draw on all his previous experience, David embarked on an Antarctic Expedition to lead Australia's Davis Research Station for a year. What he and his team couldn't have predicted was that whilst they were away, a global pandemic would change the world they left behind and find them isolated longer than ever expected. Returning in April 2021 after spending an astonishing 537 days away, David penned the bestseller '537 Days of Winter'. He now leads Antarctic expeditions as a Voyage and Deep Field Leader, enhancing our understanding of the world's most remote wilderness.David's story is not like any I've heard before & I've been looking forward to sitting down with him._______For more information about David, check out these places;-Website: https://davidknoff.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/537daysofwinterLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-knoff-1851b0a5/Head to michellejcox.com for more information about the ONE QUESTION podcast, your host or today's guestsConnect with Michelle on Linkedin here:- @MichelleJCoxConnect with Michelle on Instagram here:- @michellejcoxConnect with Michelle on Facebook here - @michellejcoxAND, if you have a burning topic you'd love people to talk more about, or know someone who'd be great to come on the One Question podcast, please get in touch;- hello@michellejcox.com

The Cognitive Crucible is a forum that presents different perspectives and emerging thought leadership related to the information environment. The opinions expressed by guests are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of or endorsement by the Information Professionals Association. During this episode, Marine Corps Maj Max Nauta discusses his Master's thesis from the US Army Command and General Staff College entitled: Multinational Operations in Strategic Competition: Leveraging the Inherent Informational Aspects through Culture and Narrative. Strategic competitors have significantly increased their influence in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) in ways that jeopardize US influence and threaten democratic governance. The People's Republic of China (PRC) and Russia do this by exploiting the ambiguity of gray zone activities, such as predatory, opaque lending practices and the spreading of disinformation. US Forces, Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) builds resiliency against these gray zone activities through transparency, which it promotes through cooperation activities to strengthen partnerships and build trust in LAC. SOUTHCOM accomplished this, in part, through Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force – Southern Command (SPMAGTF-SC), whose mission was to conduct mutually beneficial engagements with partner nations (PN) to address shared challenges in the region. SPMAGTF-SC 15, 16, and 17 were US-only task forces. SPMAGTF-SC 18, however, became the first multinational task force. SPMAGTF-SC 19 grew on this by integrating ten PN officers from Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Belize, and the Dominican Republic. The author found that integrating PN officers into SPMAGTF-SC 18 and 19 exponentially strengthened partnerships in LAC at a relatively insignificant cost. This paper examines the degree to which integrating PN officers into SPMAGTF-SC 18 and 19 strengthened partnerships, and then compares those findings with theories on narrative and culture. In conclusion, the author presents the concept of a shared regional narrative and illuminates asymmetric characteristics of strategic competition in LAC. Welcome back! We are pleased to welcome Connor Pratt to the podcast. Connor is a former USMC Logistics officer who attended the Cameron-Brooks Career Conference in January 2018— and the perfect example of how a prepared officer has options when making the transition to business. He spent eight years in the USMC and held many positions, including Battalion Maintenance Management Officer, Platoon Commander, Battalion Motor Transport Officer, and Joint Logistics Directorate Officer. Connor has a degree in Marine Transportation from the US Merchant Marine Academy. When he attended the Career Conference, he interviewed for roles in Team Leadership and General Management, Business Analysis, and Business-to-Business Sales. Breaking Down Misconceptions At the Career Conference, Connor interviewed with 15 different industry-leading companies, including Boston Scientific, Corning, Kaeser, and Altec. He intimately chose to work for Globus Medical, a world-leading spinal and trauma medical device company. He started his career in a business-to-business sales role, and we spent the first part of the conversation diving into his day-to-day work life. Because many Junior Military Officers have a skewed view of what life is like starting in a sales role, it is always good to hear from someone who has been at it for many years now and understand their perspective on the nature of the work. A Prepared Officer Gets Results Connor spent 13 months in the Cameron-Brooks Development and Preparation Program© (DPP) before attending the January 2018 Career Conference. During that time, Connor participated in a robust professional reading program, learned about the different career field options available to him, created a relevant and specific professional resume, and prepared to interview with multiple hiring managers. Through that in-depth preparation process, Connor attended the Career Conference and got every company he interviewed to pursue him. In this episode, he explains how he thoroughly engaged in the DPP to get those kinds of results. Have Friends and HAVE FUN! Connor's friend, Chris Wilkeson, attended the November 2015 Career Conference. The two pieces of advice that Connor gives that helped him to be more successful through the process are: 1) keep in contact with those who went before you and 2.) have fun. The first seems logical; the second seems counter-intuitive. That said, the officers that are more successful at the Career Conference are those who are prepared and, thus, have the mentality to have fun. At the Conference, you will meet a wide variety of interesting and experienced business professionals. Those officers who see that as an opportunity tend to have more success through the process; that is just more fun!
