Making A Difference - Day 5 Of 12 days Of Glory
A recent warm thoughts column provided information about Make a Difference Day, which is October 26th. It is a day when everyone is encouraged to make a difference in their community and world by making it a Day of Caring, an annual National Day of helping others. Across the nation, about 1 million Americans will help others on this Make a Difference Day. Can one person make a difference? We are aware that there have been many difference makers in history, to name a few. We remember that Thomas Edison brought us out of darkness and into electric light. Henry Ford gave us the Model T. Eli Whitney gave us the cotton gin. Ben Franklin provided your bifocals. John Bunyan guided the progress of millions of pilgrims. Then there was Columbus, Lincoln Beethoven, Einstein, and many others who made a difference. Our lives can be blessed by a caring community. I personally experienced this following a car accident that took six months of recovery. The outpouring of love and compassion was phenomenal. Over 600 cards and prayerful letters of encouragement for a speedy recovery were received. Visits and telephone calls from all parts of the country. A surprise call even came from caring friends who live in Switzerland and England. One afternoon, I experienced a caring community with their points of light and how they certainly can light up one's life and make a difference. I am very thankful for the caring communities around the world, whoever you are and wherever you are, thanks for all your caring. Warm Thoughts: Caring is a garden where love grows. The world is blessed by people who care. The impersonal hand of government can never replace the helping hand of a neighbor. Hubert H Humfrey. A little time to care for others, a little time to share with others. That's what makes someone like you so nice to know and to be with too. Helen Steiner Rice. One of the very faithful readers of this Warm Thoughts column recently sent me an article entitled, "You Can Make a Difference." It was an article informing the public to take action on October 26th and make that day a day of caring, a national day to inform us that the Make a Difference Day can help everyone to help others. The sixth annual event, in partnership with the Points of Light Foundation, takes place on October 26th. Mark your calendar! How do you plan to spend Make a Difference Day? It may be a month away, but it is not too early to think about what you can do to help your community pull together a project for the day. You can also make a difference in the life of even one lonely shut in, give a helping hand to a busy mother, write a letter of cheer to someone in need of an encouraging word, or touch the life of a child by sharing the gift of time with that child. Perhaps Saturday, October 26th does not fit into your schedule. Then make it October 17th for a day that will also make a difference day for you or someone in need. There is no age limit for this Make a Difference Day. The stories of volunteers are very heartwarming. In Maryland, 10 year olds gave personal items to an older friend. Two retired teachers in Selma, Alabama befriended a 96 year old widow, helping her to continue to live independently. And in Washington State, friends celebrated their 50th birthday by collecting 7,500 pounds of food, clothing, and blankets for an emergency network. Perhaps this Make a Difference Day can focus on your regular service project in the church or community. If you want a big impact on Make a Difference Day, pull the community together to blitz a needed project or solve an existing need in the community. Just think about it. Will you make a difference? One person can make a difference. Will it be you? Warm Thoughts to Ponder: Give what you have to someone, it may be better than you dare to think. Longfellow. Episode 3 - Season 2 In this episode, Amy Elizabeth dives into the concept of differentiation, a big deal in human design. Essentially, it's all about embracing the fact that we're all unique. Amy shares a recent experience where a post sparked some controversy, highlighting the challenge of wanting everyone to agree on everything. She talks about how disagreements often lead to cutting ties instead of having valuable conversations. To help everyone navigate these differences, Amy is introducing a two-day masterclass called “THE DIFFERENCE” - Day 1 is all about understanding and appreciating our unique ways of thinking and living, especially in areas like relationships and marketing. Day 2 gets into the nitty-gritty of what sets successful people apart, offering insights on how to create a different and awesome reality for yourself. Amy then gets personal, sharing her journey from being a schoolteacher to a top earner. She teases upcoming episodes about overcoming self-sabotage and making choices aligned with who you really are. It's all about choosing courage, alignment, and creating a life that feels truly limitless. Stay tuned for the masterclass and more exciting content in February. Looking to join the new Masterclass? Tonya Dower explains how you can help on Fort Carson for Make a Difference Day.
Changes have been announced for the restrictions that will be eased for NSW the Monday after the state hits the milestone of 80% of the adult population fully vaccinated. New NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet revealed the changes with a number of restrictions around entertainment venues to be eased more than initially announced. Among them, there will be a 3000-capacity limit for controlled outdoor gatherings (ie. seated, ticketed events such as concerts). It had previously been announced that the capacity limit would be 500, so it's a fairly significant increase. In July Spanish scientists researching COVID-19 at an indoor concert with 5,000 people without physical distancing found that same-day rapid testing, the use of face masks and improved ventilation led to very low rates of transmission. Of the 4,584 attendees who were analysed, six cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the two weeks following the concert. Three of the cases were believed to have been caught after the event, while one person potentially attended the concert during their incubation period. The source of the other two cases couldn't be identified Nightclubs, meanwhile, will be permitted to open earlier than the previously-slated date of Wednesday, 1st December. There's one big catch, though – clubs will be able to open for seated drinking only. Dancing will not be allowed until that 1st December date. Amazing events are happening around Jersey City, many of which are hosted by Pershing Field Garden Friends, one of the parks in the coalition. Listen in as Susan Newman (aka Suzy Brandtastic) talks with Laura Skolar, one of the founding members and current president of the Jersey City Parks Coalition. In today's talk we're going to talk about FeedJC's Dinner in the Park (series), JC Reservoir's Wild Jazz Adventure (series); The Seasonal poetry, prose and song at JC Height's 942 Summit: Do You Tea?, WHOs Gluten Free, and Bloombury Sq. Also, Washington Park Live on Sept. 26, and multiple parks will have events during JCAST weekend. The Jersey City Parks Coalition is a collection of neighborhood and park groups working together to grow and improve Jersey Cityâ??s park system. The Coalition is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization since 2005. Laura Skolar is one of the founding members of the organization and current President. The Jersey City Parks Coalition has become a significant park and open space advocacy organization. Today we are twenty two members strong representing every ward in Jersey City. We have forged a durable relationship between the community and the City and have strengthened our base by partnering with like-minded organizations. Grants and fundraising to date have produced over $700,000 for park improvements and programming to say nothing of the thousands of volunteer hours that have been invested in our parks every year. Our 2011 BIG DIG initiative, an idea conceived by one of our members for National Make a Difference Day, has brought us national recognition through USA WEEKEND Magazine. This project truly embodied the nationwide effort of volunteerism which engages communities to plan and execute a one-day project that will impact their neighborhood, their community, their city. Our goal of encouraging active participation of residents in the beautification of their local parks and public spaces came to fruition through the positive outreach created by the BIG DIG. We have formalized our partnership with the City of Jersey City through an MOU, which codifies the role of the Parks Coalition and the City regarding the development, use and maintenance of all our parks and public spaces. This may be our greatest accomplishment to date, paving the way for future generations in this public/private enterprise.

I received a flyer in the mail the other day. It rang a bell; I had seen something like it in previous years. It was the annual Make a Difference Day information sheet. From the title, you can tell that it is about getting involved in the community and making a positive difference. This event has grown since 1990, and is held the fourth Saturday of October. It started through USA Weekend and the 800 newspapers it serves. It is a day dedicated to serving neighbors and the community, to meeting needs and offering support. There are thousands of people involved in organizing it. Just letting people know which needs exist is a big job. Nowadays with the internet, people can find out much quicker who needs what and where. Last year, over three million people got involved with local groups to help in many ways. As I glanced through the list of places to help in our little community, I counted at least thirty. However, there are other charitable groups that are not mentioned. In a large city, there must be hundreds of causes that people can help. Several of the groups here are set up to help poor and homeless people in the Winter. It is an awful prospect to be caught in a freezing climate with nowhere to live. Free coats, blankets, and all sorts of basic essentials will be donated at various places. Also the shelters, such as the Salvation Army, will be cleaned, painted, and prepared for the Winter. Volunteers are asked to sign up ahead of time, sometimes bringing their own equipment, and then they will be assigned a job or two. The projects are not just charitable, though. People can choose to plant trees or flowers in public places, pick up litter along highways and roads, or even provide babysitting. It's not compulsory; it's all about volunteering, doing a job, helping. Of course, once you are out there, you begin to see other areas in the community that need help. That is probably why Make a Difference Day has grown each year. I've put it on the calendar, and will be deciding with my family what we can do to help in our town. Grammar notes. Related vocabulary: a flyer, to ring a bell, a prospect, to assign. 1. We get all sorts of flyers in the mail, advertizing this and that. 2. Your name rings a bell; have I met you before? 3. Finally getting a promotion is a wonderful prospect. 4. He assigned us jobs. Mine was to clean up after the event. // //
