The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 6th study session on Andrée Blouin's My Country, Africa: Autobiography of the Black Pasionaria. A pivotal figure in the history of counter-racism/anti-colonialism throughout the continent of Africa, Blouin is not as well known as South Africa's Madiba and Winnie Mandela, Kenya's Maus Maus and other freedom fighters who participated in combating White Terrorism in Africa. However, Blouin was of monumental importance and, consequently, a target of CIA/White Supremacy campaigns. Gus T. was ignorant about Ms. Blouin, but she was prominently featured in the new documentary, Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat - which examines the assassination of Patrice Lumumba. The film makes time to quote from Blouin's autobiography about the efforts to assassinate she, her family and Lumumba. Last week, Blouin detailed her traumatic concerns for the health of her second child. Her latest White male partner seemed ambivalent or unconcerned about securing medical attention. He only relented when Blouin caused a public spectacle arguing with White people who insisted medical assistance is for Whites only. The White man refused to allow her mother into his residence and made it a habit to brutalize and maim the black people who served him. Ironically, Blouin's mother castigated her for being tragically involved with a White Man. Lauryn Merritt was nominated as a Beck's Player with Heart for her commitment and passion on and off the court. Her favorite thing about high school sports is how it has helped her be more organized and driven, forcing her to stay on top of her school. She also enjoys being a mentor to younger athletes. Lauryn is involved in basketball, track, cross country, FFA, National Honor Society, Sunshine Society, FCA, SADD, 4H, Miami County Junior Leaders, and volunteers for the Fairy Godmother Project. Lauryn also did “Harvest for Hunger” as her FFA SAE, a large fundraising initiative to help her local food pantry, raising over $36,000 that went towards purchasing food. For Lauryn, agriculture is more than planting crops and raising animals. Her school has a “Farm to School” program where classmates get to learn about agriculture and all the areas affected by it by raising cattle to be part of the school lunch program. Agriculture has touched Lauryn in many ways. She hopes to return to her hometown after playing basketball and studying agriculture education at Huntington University. Al's first trip to Bonneville was in 1967 as a crew member on the Mardon, Ohly and Bentley fuel roadster. From 1968 to 1975 he drove and wrenched on the Sadd, Teague and Bentley fuel roadster. In 1970 he qualified for the 200 MPH Club in both A/FR & C/FR. But 200 MPH wasn't fast enough for Al, and in 1976 he built a B/FBL and in 1981 he set a record with that lakester at 308 MPH. The lakester wasconverted into a streamliner and in 1982 and in 1991 he set a BNI/FIA record of 409.986 with a 425 mile average and a terminal speed of 432. At the time, it was the fastest wheel driven car ever! Al has received the Hot Rod Magazine trophy 11 times! The streamliner was retired 2002 after setting another FIA record at 405 MPH. Both the roadster and the streamliner are in the John Price Museum in Salt Lake City. Heads up this going to be as exciting as 400 MPH ALTEAGUE RUN

How do you want the story of YOUR next chapter to begin? Do you want to be the main character of a story that starts, “It was a dark and dreary day…” Or do you want it to say, “Her eyes popped open, feeling a rush of gratitude and excitement for the day ahead. She threw open the blinds, letting the sun pour in and said, ‘This is going to be an awesome day!'”? What if I told you that you get to decide? That you are the author of your story and of your life. In Episode #10 of the Habit Thrive Podcast (and in the month of September), we are turning our focus toward planning and choosing happiness. Research cited in the The How of Happiness tells us that 40% of our happiness is determined by our intentional activities - what we choose to do with our time. Forty percent! When you think about it like that, it's easy to feel empowered to take control of our own happiness. But where do we start? At the beginning of the day, of course! So join me in breaking out your journal/planner to write down the activities that create the rhythm and flow in your day: When do you wake up? When do you eat breakfast? When do you exercise? When does light (natural or SADD) first hit your eyes in the morning? When do you go to sleep? Once you start recognizing your own rhythm, you can incorporate things that work with this rhythm and enhance your flow. Maybe you'll choose to meditate in the morning sunlight or paint something you see in nature from your window. You might find that an early morning run or brisk walk raises your endorphins for the day. The right choice for you is whatever fills up the happiness meter.
