Recently, Andrew L'Esperance and Alexis Cartier kicked off their North American race season. At the Sea Otter Classic gravel race, L'Esperance finished 13th, making him the top Canadian at the first event in the Life Time Grand Prix series. Cartier had a tough race. “It was fun, but I didn't perform at all,” he says in this episode. “I kind of expected it, but I really got smashed.”The pair of riders will find themselves at many of the same races this season, including other Life Time events, such as Unbound, and gravel nationals in Water Valley, Alta. They are both racing as privateers, responsible for their own logistics, sponsorships, maintenance, on top of all the training and competing. Each one has a unique plan and set of goals for the season, which they discuss in this episode. L'Esperance is mixing gravel, mountain bike and even road racing. Cartier is blending his training and transportation: he's bikepacking to all six of the Life Time Grand Prix events. Also on the pod, Canadian Cycling Magazine editors Matthew Pioro and Matt Hansen, as well as feature writer Jake Williams, discuss recent races, such as the men's and women's Amstel Gold and De Brabantse Pijl. Pioro reports back from Sea Otter. He says he knows a bunch about the 32” wheels that seem to be coming to mountain bikes, but what is he actually able to reveal?

On May 4, 1931, William and Mamie Wagner were murdered at their home in northwest Mississippi. The Jackson Clarion-Ledger called the murders of one of the most prominent couples in the area, “the most brutal tragedy that has ever happened in this section of Mississippi”. Interview with Tim Lee & Susan Bauer Lee of Bark Bark is a drum set, a Fender 6-string bass, two voices and more hooks than Bill Dance keeps in his tackle box. Loud is their new album. Bark comprises the collaborative duo of Susan Bauer Lee (drums and vocals) and Tim Lee (Fender VI bass and vocals) based in Water Valley, Mississippi. Susan has played and toured with Tim the past two decades with Bark and Tim Lee 3. Tim got his start in Missisippi's The Windbreakers before going on to tour as part of Mitch Easter' Let's Active and seminal college rock band Swimming Pool Q's. Loud is being releasedby Dial Back Sound / Cool Dog Sound on 12” LP vinyl, CD, digital download and stream September 5. “If you can fill the unforgiving three and a half minutes with two hundred and ten seconds of Rock n Roll, yours is the earth and everything that is in it.” I think Rudyard Kipling said that. What do you do when you don't know what to do? In the face of commercial failure, heartbreaking loss, environmental collapse, grief, one too many beers. You make a record . . . and you make it loud. It starts with “Love Minus Action,” and the lyrics “I'm a loser not a fighter.” Lennon couldn't have said it better. But the real story here is that you can't lose if you don't play the game. But what do you do if you don't play the game? You carry on without the baggage of giving a shit about the game. You dance on the graves of the forgotten winners and you play for the regulars. There's a field in North Mississippi. Several years from now. After the screens have all gone dark. The lush green glows in the dull light of a cloudy afternoon. In the middle of the field there is a drum set and two amplifiers. An old generator rattles in the silence. A woman sits at the drum stool and fixes the mic to reach her lips. A man tunes his Bass VI guitar and twists the volume knob all the way up. A ragged crowd gathers from out of the woods. A rumble of distant thunder rolls through the sky. Then the snare cracks and the band plays on. It's Bark, and they're playing us out just before the rain. They're playing Loud; it's the distillation of Rock n Roll—the beat, the riff, the words and the voice. The things that have always been there from “Psychotic Reaction” to “Satisfaction.” Bandcamp: dialbacksound.bandcamp.com bark-bark-loud.bandcamp.com Website: bark-loud.com Facebook: @Bark.Bark.Loud Instagram: @bark.timlee3

WALL (3-1) @ MASON (5-0) KICKOFF AT 7 P.M. Ryan Chadwick (17-12) - The No. 4 Wall Hawks come into this matchup with their long-time rival and former district opponent, Mason, off a bye week on Friday. After rolling over Peaster two weeks ago, it seems like the loss to Jim Ned really stuck with the Hawks. Coming off a bye week, I think Wall will be too much for the Punchers to handle. With that being said, Mason has a talented roster, and Hawks' Head Coach Houston Guy says that it's Mason's size that might be a factor in this game. I think this matchup will come down, as it often does, to how Wall's defense matches up with the athletes on the other side of the ball. The Hawks will be able to put points on the board. Their methodical offense is too difficult for any defense to hope to shut out for an entire game. Mason will have to outscore Wall's offense and keep the Hawks' defense on the field. That's a tall task and, if you ask me, too much to ask the Punchers to do. Wall will control the clock, and if they play a cleaner game than the one last season where the Hawks had 10 fumbles, Wall wins this one. PICK: WALL 31 MASON 21 Matt Trammell (16-13) - Every year that Mason and Wall play it is a nail biter. Expect no difference today. These two teams know each other very well. However with Mason being undefeated expect them to keep that rolling in this defensive matchup. PICK: MASON 14 WALL 6. James Boulginy (22-7) - The Hawks return off their bye week with a tough test in the Mason Punchers. This is a rivalry game that was a low scoring game last season where Wall took the victory 14-6. Both these teams feature good run games as Wall has Nathan Pepper, Hagyn Barbee, and Gunnar Dillard and Mason has Ryne Todd and Sutten Silerio. Not only do both of these teams have good running games but they both have very good defenses. There are not common opponents yet but Wall gets the edge as they're coming off a bye week. PICK: WALL 28 – MASON 24 OTHER PICKS: Scott Menchaca (22-7) - WALL | Yantis Green (18-11) - MASON | Ernesto Rodriguez (20-9) - MASON | Arleen Castillo (16-13) - WALL | KIMBERLY (15-14) - MASON | WATER VALLEY (1-3) @ STERLING CITY (3-1) KICKOFF AT 7:30 P.M. Trammell - Another big rivalry game this week is between district foes Sterling City and Water Valley. Last year the Eagles took the game by a large margin winning 42-14. However as we know the Wildcats went through a ton of adversity last year. This game should be closer (despite what the rest of the crew thinks) but its likely not going to work out for Water Valley. PICK: STERLING CITY 35 WATER VALLEY 27. Bouligny - Sterling City has quietly been winning a lot of football games although their last game was a loss to Roscoe before their bye week. They run the ball a lot with Johnny Monreal, Canyon McCabe, and Seth Turner. Quarterback Ty Turner gets it done at quarterback. The Wildcats have a dangerous duo in the backfield in David Valeriano and Anthony Quintana. This district is wide open as Eldorado and Iraan are also quietly gathering wins. In this one, Sterling City takes the win. PICK: STERLING CITY 48 – WATER VALLEY 37 Chadwick - District play begins between two Concho Valley teams coming off of bye weeks. Water Valley showed flashes of brilliance earlier in the season but has not rekindled that same magic ever since. With that being said, the Wild Cats' three losses come out to a combined 16 points. That's rough. Water Valley has been in every game they've played so far on the year, and do not expect that to change on Friday night. Sterling City kicked off its season strong and picked up momentum with a win over their rivals, the Miles Bulldogs. Like Wall, Sterling City runs an old-school offense that depends on physicality and time of possession. The Eagles' offense seems inevitable at times, marching steadily down the field. The Wild Cats may stop the Eagles occasionally, but Sterling City is no stranger to going for it on 4th down. From what I've seen from the Eagles this year, I think they are just too much for Water Valley. I'm picking the Eagles to beat the Wildcats at home. PICK: STERLING CITY 27 Water Valley 21 OTHER PICKS: Scott Menchaca - STERLING CITY | Yantis Green - STERLING CITY | Ernesto Rodriguez - STERLING CITY | Arleen Castillo - STERLING CITY | VERIBEST (5-0) @ PAINT ROCK (4-1) KICKOFF AT 7:30 P.M. Bouligny - Like the Brownwood game, this is the 6-Man equivalent. Two very talented teams going head-to-head. Falcons sophomore Bryce Martin and senior Hunter Hallmark at quarterback have gone 36/46 for 433 yards, 12 touchdowns, and one interception. They also have that split pretty evenly. Those two, along with running back Lane Howard, get it one on the ground. Martin has 371 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, and Howard has 538 yards and five scores. Paint Rock has put up 227 points so far. This should be a good one that will not be over by halftime. PICK: VERIBEST 63 – PAINT ROCK 45 Chadwick - Two Concho Valley Six Man teams meet in the two schools' last non-district matchup before the final grind begins. The Falcons come in at 5-0 and Paint Rock at 4-1. Veribest defeated Paint Rock's eventual district opponent, Panther Creek, last weekend 55-6, so this matchup will be a good test to see where the Indians match up later in the season. The combination of Bryce Martin and Hunter Hallmark will be too much for Paint Rock, in my honest opinion, but look for the Indians to make this a close matchup with a lot of points. PICK: VERIBEST 70 PAINT ROCK 55 Trammell - This one is simple to me. The Falcons are the best 6-man team in the Concho Valley. This game will be over before you know it. PICK: VERIBEST 45 PAINT ROCK 0 OTHER PICKS: Scott Menchaca - VERIBEST | Yantis Green - VERIBEST | Ernesto Rodriguez - VERIBEST | Arleen Castillo - PAINT ROCK | STEPHENVILLE (3-2) @ BROWNWOOD (5-0) KICKOFF AT 7:30 P.M. Bouligny - The Lions against the Yellowjackets should be one of the better games in the state. They are both ranked in the Top 10 for 4A schools. Brownwood is similar to San Angelo Central in the fact they graduated a lot of their offense last year but returned their quarterback, Ike Hall. The Lions also have a couple of legit prospects on defense in Quinten McCarty and Morsello Hooker. They are 5-0 and coming off two respectable wins against Glen Rose and Waco Connally. Stephenville is 3-2 and has played some dogs. Abilene Wylie is a common opponent where Brownwood won 35-21 and Stephenville lost 41-32. The Jackets have a good quarterback in Ryan Gafford, who has thrown for 1315 yards, 14 touchdowns, and four interceptions. His favorite target is by far, Tristan Gentry, who has 37 catches for 748 yards and eight scores. This should be a great game, and the Lions come out on top. PICK: BROWNWOOD 42 – STEPHENVILLE 35 Trammell - If you want to know what game everyone in Texas is talking about that would have to be this game. Two state ranked teams clashing at a sold out Gordon Wood Stadium. No clue how it'll end but it's going to be a nail biter. PICK: STEPHENVILLE 28 BROWNWOOD 27 Chadwick - Everyone expected the Brownwood Lions to take a step back this season after they graduated a good portion of their offense last year. Brownwood has since silenced any talk like that, as they currently sport a 5-0 overall record and sit at No. 7 in the 4A state rankings. However, Stephenville is no slouch either. They also sit in the Top 10 just behind Brownwood, and this game will be the game of the week to watch. I give the edge to Brownwood in this one solely because the Lions play at home. Brownwood ISD already announced that the game on Friday night is sold out. Expect the atmosphere at Gordon Wood Stadium to be eclectic. PICK: BROWNWOOD 42 STEPHENVILLE 35 OTHER PICKS: Scott Menchaca - STEPHENVILLE | Yantis Green - STEPHENVILLE | Ernesto Rodriguez - BROWNWOOD | Arleen Castillo - STEPHENVILLE |

Field Trips are often an immersion, a hands on learning experience. In this episode Heidi interviews Erin Austen Abbott to cultivate backyard family adventures sharing planning tips for family field trips. She also peel back the layers of untourism by describing what makes a place like Mississippi so unique and filled with hidden gems, yet rarely on our travel list. Website for this episode: https://ordinarysherpa.com/088 Will you leave Written Review on Apple Podcasts: https://ordinarysherpa.com/review/ Beginner's Guide to Untourism: https://ordinarysherpa.com/untourism/ Our guest is a writer, an early childhood educator, and a former traveling nanny. She has been featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Real Simple, Mother Mag, and more. She published her second book in April of 2020 called Family Field Trip. Her blog, Field Trip works to teach parents and children about design, food, art, and culture, from home and beyond. Erin Austen Abbott lives in Water Valley, Mississippi with her husband, son, and four animals. Key Takeaways Mississippi is unlikely on anyone's bucket list, but it would be an ideal untourist destination due to the many hidden gems. As William Faulkner once said, “to understand the world, you must first understand a place like Mississippi. I'm not sure if any of you have ever been to the Mississippi Delta, but once you set foot on its soil, it seeps into your blood and changes the way in which your eyes look out at the world.” To give you a hint of the hidden gems, the amount of good food at gas stations is unlike anywhere Erin has ever traveled. There are trails specific to music, literary trails, even a tamale trail. When you begin to look at the area with a different lens there are virtually adventures and hidden gems abound. The Blues trail is not only a great adventure, it's a historical and cultural lesson. Erin created a spotify playlist to accompany each blue sign to help connect the facts to an experience. The spotify playlist is something they can come back to over and over to retain and remember what they learned and experienced on the blues trail. Erin's second book, Family Field Trip was inspired many years ago during her solo travel days. She was standing in line for a remarkable location in France watching several kids complaining and oblivious to the amazing opportunities surrounding them. “I need to write a book about all the things they could do” That was the spark for the book and it never left. Even while working on her first book the family field trip book lingered waiting for her to bring it to life. What sparks linger inside of you? What books do you need to write? Public art and murals are an indicator of what the area is going through. Many times the art reflects the aspect the community is proud of and the challenges they have worked through. A great untourist experience is to go to a farmers market, grocery store, or locally owned restaurant and seek out the food you have never seen, or tried before. Purchase it and explore what makes that food unique. When you explore from a curious standpoint you also have questions to ask the local people and learn what makes that location unique. In many ways, as we age we run out of first time experiences - which might be the appeal of travel. If we are intentional to notice nature is constantly changing around us. Things like a season study to watch for different birds or how the same place changes over time are great microadventures. One way Erin likes to acclimate to a new community is to take public transit on a simple out and back experience. Study what's outside the windows, listen to the local chatter and glean insights from the commuter culture that surrounds you. You'll be able to be a simple passenger without an itinerary. One of the ways Erin and her family like to connect with kids and families is by ordering good takeout and heading to a local park or playground. If you choose one near a school they are usually embedded in the community and will attract local people. Erin gave SO MANY tips on how to plan for untourist or family field trips. One of her favorites is searching for geotags and then following the rabbit hole to discovery. For example when you are in Instagram and you click on the geotag it takes you to a map, which then she adds to a guide in Apple Maps. Getting in the habit of adding geotags to maps at the moment makes planning for the long term much easier. Air Date: March 30, 2022 Welcome to Episode 196 of the podcast. Pit building and cooking great barbecue are an obvious match made in heaven, but it isn't often that you find someone making a business out of doing both. My guest this week is Brent Buschel and with Buschel BBQ and Bush Pig Pits he is doing just that. When he and his wife moved to Canada from Australia they settled in Toronto where Brent went to work at Adamson's Barbecue, starting as a dishwasher and working his way up to pitmaster. After the restaurant was closed during Covid, Brent and his wife decided to head west and settled in Water Valley, AB where he put his previous trades experience to work building pits. More recently they have started up a bbq catering business with hopes of maybe one day opening up a brick and mortar operation. Kathleen opens the show drinking an Outboard Cream Ale from the Milwaukee Brewing Company, discussing her recent shows at the Pabst Theatre in Milwaukee and The Chicago Theatre. “GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Hostess ScaryCakes in honor of Halloween, which she likes since they are just a festive chocolate cupcake. She then tastes Spooky Jr. Mints, which have black and orange mint flavoring but taste the same as the regular version, and Tessamae's Cilantro Lime Ranch, which she would only recommend to those Termites who don't want actual Ranch dressing. Kathleen gives a shoutout to Collectivo Coffee's Blue Healer blend, and to her lifelong love of Miracle Whip over mayonnaise. UPDATE ON KATHLEEN'S QUEEN'S COURT: Kathleen provides an update on the Court, reporting that Queen Dolly has recorded a duet of “Does She Love You,” with Reba. Queen Cher is suing Sonny Bono's widow over royalties for Sonny & Cher songs including “I Got You Babe.”UPDATES: Kathleen provides updates on the Missouri Cannibal, Banksy's “Girl With Balloon” sells for $25.4M, the Elizabeth Holmes trial continues to unveil the fraudulent nature of the Theranos technology in court. HALLOWEEN BRATWURST: Kathleen reports on a Madison WI butcher who east have created “Spook-toberfest” brats, which are cooked in local beer and dotted with candy corn. Kathleen is heading to Green Bay this weekend and is on the hunt for the festive brats. ALLIGATOR GAR CAUGHT: Kathleen reads an article from Kansas, where a fisherman has recently caught a 4.5 foot, 39.5-pound Alligator Gar. The catch is perplexing to local wildlife officials, since this horrifyingly ugly species of Gar are not native to Kansas. TENNESSEE TOWN FOR SALE: Kathleen reads a listing for a 7-acre Tennessee town that has hit the market for $725,000. According to the realtor tasked with selling the property, Water Valley has tremendous potential and is likened to the town mentioned the Schitt's Creek television series.MORE SNAKE NEWS: Kathleen reads an article detailing where a California woman found more than 90 rattlesnakes under her home, and another article where a Mississippi woman found a blond rattlesnake with rare pigmentation. ST LOUIS vs THE NFL: Kathleen reviews the current status of a lawsuit filed by her hometown of St. Louis against the NFL after the league allowed the Rams to move to Los Angeles. STL officials are seeking financial damages, and NFL lawyers are trying to get the Jan 2022 trial moved out of St. Louis. Through her time as a commercial banker, consultant, and mentor to budding entrepreneurs, she helped clients create solid business and financial strategies to help propel their business to success. While working with aspiring female entrepreneurs, Janice noticed that the same four themes kept repeating: Many women are uncomfortable with finance, both in their business and in their personal life. Women want access to more women mentors and advisors. Women often start businesses because they feel the corporate world doesn't fit their lifestyle. Few are motivated by purely financial reasons. Mothers didn't want money to drive their family decisions. From these themes, The Money, Career, & Motherhood Podcast was born. Now Janice spends her time helping mothers gain confidence and understanding about money, career, and business topics as they relate to motherhood and family – the way many women actually think about money. Janice loves helping mothers implement business and financial strategies within their families to help each family member thrive. Adrienne Brown-David was born in St. Louis, MO. After a brief stint at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a short return to St. Louis, Adrienne relocated to St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. It was here that she began to focus on painting and mixed media. She spent several years creating a body of work that is easily identified by its "drip" effect. After marriage and four children, she relocated to Oxford, MS. With the demands of work and family life, she had to take a break from the large mixed media portraits that she had become known for. During this break, Adrienne began doodling tiny neighborhoods in her sketchbook with Sharpie pen to keep her hand and eye sharp. These tiny doodles grew into larger and larger compositions. Her love for these doodles grew as well and they are now her main artistic focus. Each composition is created entirely free hand and a single Sharpie pen is used (until it completely runs out of ink). Most recently, Adrienne has been playing with portraiture in an illustrative form, drawing custom family portraits. These family portraits have been used for Christmas cards, post cards, business cards, as well as beloved keepsakes. They are simple, line drawings of families, but mastering the unique characteristics of each family member makes the resemblance undeniable, even with the lack of facial features. That attention to unique details eventually evolved into her current project, custom paper dolls or Minikins. The goal of Minikins is to create a completely customized representation of any and every child. This means that all genders, skin tones, hair types/colors, eye color and abilities can have a toy that represents their unique beauty. Adrienne Brown-David currently works from her home studio in Water Valley, MS where she resides with her husband, Taariq and their four daughters. https://www.instagram.com/adriennemeschelle/

Joe’s first assignment as a film maker for Southern Foodways Alliance sounds like it was pretty much a dare from founder John T. Edge. Armed with not much more than a camera, a background in anthropology and a genuinely curious storyteller’s heart, Joe made Saving Seeds, which started an SFA tradition. He’s since made dozens of films, sharing the traditions and character of the region with honesty and grace. Kyle and I dropped in on Joe on Day 16 in Water Valley, Mississippi. Check out Joe’s work at www.joeyork.com and watch his inspiring films with the SFA at www.southernfoodways.org
Today on Positively Creative, Dorothy chats with Erin Austen Abbott about all of the different creative avenues Erin ventures as a facilitator and curator in the creative community. Erin shares all about her shop Amelia and the recent shop move from Oxford to Water Valley, Mississippi, where the shop has grown to house a gallery as well as classes and workshops. Erin discusses her new book, How to Make It, a look into 25 creative entrepreneurs and makers and their creative processes. They also discuss Erin's writings for Design Sponge, her own photography, and much more! "It's been a real lesson for me on what people want...It's also an education process, educating people why things cost what they cost, why handmade is so important, why we need this kind of movement in our country and world because it's important to know where your items are coming from and to gift things that are more special than something you could pick up at a Black Friday sale." -Erin Austin Abbott For more Erin Austen Abbott & Amelia: https://ameliapresents.com/ Amelia Presents Instagram For more Positively Creative: Positively Creative Website Positively Creative Instagram On Today's Show: (7:30) Amelia - shop, gallery, and classes (11:30) From the 187 square feet on the Oxford Square to all under one roof in Main Street in Water Valley, MS (16:00) The Living Room Gallery, Glennray Tutor , Jonathan Kent Adams , A Study in Color (20:00) One Night Stand Show that Erin curates (25:00) How to Make It book , Chronicle Books (26:30) Studio Stories on Instagram (31:00) on photographing and writing for the book (34:00) going on tour for the book (36:00) on traveling, Field Trip blog (36:30) working for Design*Sponge (43:00) Erin's typical day and how she organizes (45:00) Dorothy blabs on about Trello (47:00) on when and what to post on Amelia Presents Instagram (53:00) Sarah, Occasionette, Girls Can Tell , Storehouse in New Jersey (54:00) Elizabeth Suzann, Jojotastic (55:00) Shopkeep Facebook Group (1:00:00) on finding artists to carry in the shop (1:05:00) Up & Vanished Podcast (1:06:00) On how she got the name Amelia Presents
As we do every Friday, we traveled across the state letting you know about events that make Mississippi great. Today we started our road trip off with Aallyah Wright, and Charles Coleman, co-writers of the play “Beautiful Agitators”. Then we headed to Greenwood, to speak with Danielle Morgan for the Bikes, Blues & Bayous, Bike ride. Next we moved to Water Valley, and spoke with Linda White for the 48th annual Watermelon Festival and ended our road trip with Cary Hudson, a Hattiesburg-based musician as he discussed his music and his upcoming shows. In this Field Session we have a live set from singer/songwriter Andrew Bryant of Water Valley, Miss. You can usually find Andrew behind the trap kit in his band Water Liars , but last year he released an album of his own songs in his voice accompanied by his guitar. This Is The Life is a meditation on fatherhood, being a husband, a son of aging parents and staying true to yourself creatively in the midst of all those obligations. Enjoy a short version of the set in the video or listen to the entire set in the audio link. Recorded at the Bragg Jam Music Festival in Macon. https://youtu.be/dQv5ofQFJuY
Jennifer was born in small town Water Valley, Mississippi, whose claim to fame is having one grocery store called Piggly Wiggly. Her mother was born at home in that same small town and when she was 5 years old they moved to Lake Havasu, a retirement community, which is in Arizona. It also has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the state as there was not a lot to do. Jennifer was creative at home, she made magazines, got into journalism, and was writing little things that she has kept since then. This was all before blog posts were a thing. We laughed at how the paper journal is old school. Jennifer had an older brother and an older sister, who were both in their early to mid 20s when she was born. Since she never lived with them, she felt pretty much an only child. We talked about the return of coloring books and how adults are using them to explore the arts and relax. Jennifer mentions using them in her prenatal mediation class Read more
