What is a place you'd rather not go? One that sounds nearly unbearable. The DMV? The school pick-up line?  What about going into a serious medical diagnosis or a financial crisis?  Following Jesus is no safeguard against difficulty in life. God may give you an assignment that feels impossible and overwhelming. That is where my guest this week, mom and author/speaker Cari Trotter, found herself in early 2021.  But what Cari also found in those hellish months following a difficult diagnosis echoed what concentration camp survivor Victor Frankl says, “Life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose.”  Cari's life shifted in an instant and her identity, health, and expectations of the future shifted too. But she found a solid rock to anchor to in her relationship with God - wherever he was leading her. However dark or lonely the path she was never alone. Her meaning and purpose were not gone because the Lord was her strength and her song. She is right where she belongs.  Connect with Cari Trotter:  Website:  https://www.caritrotter.com/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/caritrotter1  Instagram:  @cari.trotter  Twitter: @caritrotter  Links Mentioned:   Struck: One Christian's Reflections on Encountering Death by Russ Ramsey Every Moment Holy, Volume I: New Liturgies for Daily Life by Douglas Kaine McKelvey    Related Episodes: Two Questions for a Glorious Becoming :: Cari Trotter [Ep 40] Week Six Summer of Mentorship 2020 :: Stacey Thacker  You Are Never Alone :: Max Lucado [Ep 298] Featured Sponsors:  Find links to this week's sponsors and unique promo codes at dontmomalone.com/sponsors.

This year, I started a monthly series where I share some of the books have been so very meaningful and transformative to me. Ones that will either invite you to step closer to the Lord or ones that equip you to better care for those around you who are hurting. This month, I would like to offer you a prayer book. Written prayers can help us discover words stirring within us when we can't find the words on our own, and they also unite us with other believers throughout time and space. There are many prayer books available, and I definitely encourage you to find one that resonates with your heart and soul—not just the concepts that are presented, but the language that is used. The one I turn to most often in this season has been Every Moment Holy, by Douglas Kaine McKelvey. Tune in to find out why this is my book recommendation for February. Today we chat with author, lyricist, and screenwriter Douglas Kaine McKelvey on the second volume of his books Every Moment Holy: Death, Grief, and Hope. But in case you think this conversation is about nothing but grief and death and loss, it's actually infused with joy. That's really the thread of our whole interview today – how joy and sorrow are intertwined, how we can hold them both and experience them both, sometimes back-to-back, how we can mourn with those who mourn and rejoice with those who rejoice (Romans 12:15), and how we can walk in the maturity of growth in Christ to be able to experience both joy and sorrow throughout the trials and everyday happenings of our lives. For even amidst hardship, pain, and confusion, the rock-hard truth of God's goodness shines through, making every moment holy. In this episode, we are going to go through a liturgical prayer together that was written for those who have experienced a loss and are about to leave that time of marked grieving and return to daily living. To go back to school, back to work. To start paying the bills again or resuming whatever schedule we had prior to the loss. It is a difficult season to be in—still grieving, yet required to step back into life. I know that so many of you have experienced loss recently—whether that was the loss of a loved one, job loss, loss of friendship, or loss of dreams you once held close. This liturgy is for you. Don't get lost in the word “liturgy.” It's just a term for a form of public worship. A ritual. In this case, a prayer. So I will pause for a moment here as we begin, and I invite you to quiet the space around you, and quiet the space inside of you. If you need more time, just pause the podcast until you are ready to continue. I'll leave a moment of silence at the end, as well. Just stay there with the Lord until you feel freedom to go back about your day. Kari   *The liturgical prayer is pulled from “Every Moment Holy” Volume II by Douglas Kaine McKelvey. It is not cited in its entirety, so please see the book for the full prayer.   >> Soul Care Group: Monthly email with soul care practices http://lovedoesthat.org/soulcaregroup >> Written Spiritual Direction: Recognizing God's presence in the midst of our pain http://lovedoesthat.org/spiritualdirection   WHAT HAPPENS WHEN GOD GOES SILENT? As an introvert, silence is your strength. You cherish quiet moments. Time alone replenishes your soul like nothing else can. But what happens when God goes silent? When you raise your questions of grief and hurt and doubt—and He doesn't answer? Dear one, what if your very quietness has positioned you to experience the presence of God in a totally new way? What if in these seasons of silence, God is actually speaking to you louder than He has ever spoken to you before? If you ready to press into God in this season of silence, I invite you to fill out the form at lovedoesthat.org/apply. I use a modern-day letter writing style of spiritual direction perfect for Christian women drawn to quiet spaces and written words. Throughout our correspondence, I will compassionately listen to your story, gently ask questions that point you to God, and help you discover personal spiritual practices that invite you to stay close to Him. This episode is posting later than usual (life went a little wonky the past 3 days), and it is not my normal episode. I simply wanted to take a small amount of time to encourage everyone to take an information break and soak in some quiet and peace. I am reading from the book, "Every Moment Holy" by Douglas Kaine McKelvey and I think everyone should have this book at the ready on their bookshelf. I hope you are blessed.

This resource includes three prayers: one for morning, another for midday (7:59), and the last for evening (11:57). The prayers will follow a consistent pattern each week with new scriptures every day. This week, we begin a new rhythm, carrying the same prayers with us through the entire week. How might we experience the presence of the Lord more deeply as we steep ourselves in the same passage and prayers throughout the week? This practice of the Daily Office will help us live more fully in God's loving presence as we navigate this time of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty. The midday prayer comes from Douglas Kaine McKelvey. http://dev.practicetribe.com/dailyoffice/
