Click here to send me a text message (include your contact info if you want a reply). To be alone in the world is a terrible thing, unless of course it is by choice. Especially for men, the heart may long for deep connection while all our social posturing creates the opposite--distance. When men discover deep friendship with other men it is a gift to be savoured and, in this instance, shared. Don McLeod, Barry Foster and I have met together for almost twenty-five years, dubbing ourselves, preposterously, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. We have no advice about how others might do this themselves, but by sharing our own story perhaps some wisdom will emerge for those who seek a similar experience. All we know is that the world, and our world in particular, is a lot better for having friends. Books referenced in this conversation:"Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom" by John O'Donohue; HarperCollins, 1997"To Bless the Space Between Us: A Book of Blessings" by John O'Donohue; Convergent Books, 2008"Consolations: The Solace, Nourishment and Underlying Meaning of Everyday Words" by David Whyte; Canongate Books, 2019As well as any of the over twenty books by Jungian writer James HollisPersonal LinksMy web site (where you can sign up for my blog): https://www.brianepearson.caMy email address: mysticcaveman53@gmail.comSeries Music Credit"Into the Mystic" by Van Morrison, performed by Colin James, from the album, Limelight, 2005; licensed under SOCAN 2022

Her memoir, Gay with God, Reclaiming My Faith, Honoring My Story has just been released! Her podcast, GAY with GOD! can be found wherever you stream your podcasts. Midge specializes in helping her LGBTQIA+ community in their coming out and faith journeys. Her main focus is to stop gay suicides by educating people wounded by the church that they can be in relationship with the God of their understanding and that God does and has always loved us, just as we are created to be. To that end, Midge is very involved in her parish, The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. Midge and her wife, along with their fur babies, enjoy spending time at their mountain cabin, hiking, and being with their friends.  In today's episode I talk about courage and how we can still Rise UP and do it peacefully in order to reclaim our country, our hope, our freedom, and our safety. I know we are hurting after the results of the 2024 election and yet, this is the time to do the worthy work it will take to make this a country for all people. We all have those moments when we let our thoughts get away from us and we start to spiral. Some of that is brought on by a lack of self-control while other times is hormones taking over that seem uncontrollable. Our mindset sets the stage for our lives, so today we're looking at 3 mindset shifts that will impact your motherhood, self-image, and relationship with God.   Blessing read in today's episode: For One Is Exhausted  Taken from To Bless the Space Between Us by John O'Donohue   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *      Hey, I'm Courtney - a mom, wife, Jesus-lovin' dog owner who is trained in spiritual direction. I love being with people, working out, and spending time with Jesus. After giving birth during the craziness of 2020 (#iykyk), I found myself isolated, overwhelmed, and unsure of how to move forward. Turns out my old ways of operating (in faith, fitness, marriage, friendships, homemaking...ALL the things) weren't sustainable within the context of motherhood.    If you're ready to come up for air, mama, know that you can experience rest *and* peace in your motherhood! Say goodbye to overwhelm and hello to balance and freedom.    Go ahead and throw some ice in your tea or coffee (before it gets cold again

This course will be one potent hour per week starting on April 25; participate live or at your convenience via pre-recording; pre-registration required. Learn more about this offering and many more at www.shawnparell.com.Wind marks the transition between seasons in Northern New Mexico. Dry wind — the kind that agitates the senses — and mud that coats paws and suctions around walking boots. Emblematic of its military-inspired moniker, March can seem like a landscape across which one must trudge from territory to territory. Dickens described the temper of this month in Great Expectations: “It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.”The sun gradually climbs toward the equator. I unbutton my jacket. A tendril of cold touches my neck. I shiver and burrow my head under a wool cap. I am continuously learning how to get unstuck. Today, the image of another child, shrouded. A mother confronting another day of terrible unknowing. With each step, I name these things with bewilderment. Why are we not better than we are?I try to focus on the life that is here, but everything speaks of everything else. Here, dead pines ravaged by bark beetles will have to be removed to prevent a contagion. Here, my son has pulled a little tooth with jagged edges from his mouth and strung it on a necklace. And here are a few more facts. According to Pew Research, 81% of adults in the U.S. say there is something spiritual beyond the natural world, even if we cannot see it. 46% say they feel a deep sense of wonder about the universe at least once or twice a month, and a similar share (44%) say they feel a sense of spiritual peace and well-being with the same frequency. Also, a folk etymology of the apotropaic incantation abracadabra is avra kehdabra, a biblical Hebrew/Aramaic word from Genesis that means “I will create as I speak” or “I create with the word.”So, here is another voice I want to hear: a murmur is rising from the deep. Green inspiration is unfurling into form. Time ripens and sleeping palaces breathe themselves awake again. In winter it seems impossible to imagine, but beneath the thin world of our human happenings, nature has all along been secretly, marvelously conjuring. The rhythm of emergence is a gradual slow beat always inching its way forward; change remains faithful to itself until the new unfolds in the full confidence of true arrival. Because nothing is abrupt, the beginning of spring nearly always catches us unawares. It is there before we see it; and then we can look nowhere without seeing it. - ”To Bless the Space Between Us” by John O'DonohueAny garden we have ever loved depends on this private resurrection. Our growth, too, is often obscured beneath and behind a gradual sequence of unfolding. Our growth, too, cannot be agitated but must continuously emerge from a thawing ground.John O'Donohue wrote that we must “put our eye to the earth at an unusual angle to glimpse the circle toward which all things aspire.” We rarely speak to each other in such strange terms, but I believe authentic rituals can provide the conditions to sense our belonging. I recently interviewed Mark Jensen, an herbalist elder and dear friend, who described to me the forest walks that have contextualized his daily life for more than forty years. He spoke of greeting a certain plant that intrigued him, year after year, with faithfulness and friendliness and unassuming attention — until, one day, he felt the blessing of a mysterious and reciprocal salutation.Soon, seemingly out of nowhere, a stream moving down the mountain again may call your attention. In the early morning, or whenever your senses lean toward the liminal, listen for this low hum — a loving, unearthing resonance. Tender saplings may have broken ground overnight; a fist of color may have opened; and you may find yourself once again in communion with nature's awakening. In time, you may even learn a language, unusual and all your own, shared by lichen and seedlings. Hello down there? I am here. You are here. It is enough. Some forms of beauty calm us, others excite us, but all tend to grab our attention and intrigue us enough to have an affect. Beauty of course comes in many forms beyond the human face and form. From the landscape, seascape, and skyscape to the wonders of music, art, math, and science, we're surrounded by reminders of the deeper things, the higher things, the truest things in life and beyond. Let's make sure we steep ourselves in a recognition and enjoyment of the many and varied beauties around us, small and large. Dr Carolina Herbert joins us on the show again to discuss her experience of the Chiron Return: a process that occurs for us all in our late 40s/early 50s. We begin with a poem from John O'Donohue from his collection, To Bless the Space Between Us. It's a poem entitled For Someone Awakening to the Trauma of His of Her Past. This sets the scene for the story of Chiron told from his birth until his eventual release from his physical form to join the constellations. Then, Carolina generously shares with us some of her experiences over the course of her Chiron Return, giving us a glimpse into the personal, human story expressed with the backdrop of this archetypal event. She speaks of her process of Apology and Forgiveness, and how she has drawn from the work of V, formerly known as Eve Ensler, and her most recent book entitled, The Apology. We traverse the field between the personal and the collective in this one, exploring the complexity of being a human two in a world that is one.For more on Dr Carolina: www.alkimiasoul.comArtwork is Gustave Moreau - Dead Poet Borne by at Centaur._____________________________If you're enjoying the show you can easily show your appreciation by becoming a Patron for just $5. In this episode, we discuss spiritual practices–things we do that ground us in the presence of God and that contribute to our well-being. We start by discussing the state of the world right now, how we often feel burnt out and helpless with the news of Russia (though it is not the Russian people's will but Vladimir Putin's) invading Ukraine and the news of anti-trans legislation in Texas and other states, on top of what we're facing in our personal lives. We think that this, in itself, is a spiritual practice, naming and lamenting the evil in our world; this happens in many of the Psalms and there's a whole book of the Bible called Lamentations. We talk about other spiritual practices that have been helpful for us during these past few weeks–reading prophetic scripture that speaks to empires falling, reading books that feature the hope of change and goodness in the world and the church (see said books below), tarot card reading, liturgical written prayer (April loves the Book of Common Prayer!), and also practices that allow us to be embodied, such as holding things while praying (crystals, prayer beads), and corporate practices like communion. We discuss what spiritual practices were available to us under evangelicalism–not many, really, besides prayer, Bible reading, and journaling, and for the former two there were pretty rigid expectations about how you were supposed to do it (even though prayer was supposed to be freeform, you weren't allowed to get mad at God or ask too many questions, etc). As our beliefs have shifted, we have allowed ourselves to find the Divine in more places and practices, knowing that the Holy Spirit is always with us. And we know now that God is not afraid of our doubts or our anger or our sadness, God actually desires that we bring our full selves to prayer, scripture reading, or whatever other way we encounter God. Resources mentioned: Books April just read: Dear Church by Lenny Duncan Outdoing Jesus by Doug Pagitt (and now she is reading To Bless the Space Between Us, a book of blessings by the late Irish poet John O'Donohue, and that has been spiritually enriching as well) Want a Bible app that offers LGBTQ+ affirming devotionals? We don't always have 20 minutes to sit in meditation and be mindful of a holy sense of blessing. We oftentimes need to be reminded of God's blessing when we're on the fly, in the midst of our hectic and busy lives. So, this 3 minute meditation was crafted to practice on the fly. Any time you have three minutes and want to come home to a sense of blessing, there you are. This meditation on blessing like the longer version (19 minutes) incorporates the use of John O'Donohue's definition of blessing "a circle of light drawn around a person to protect, heal, and strengthen." This definition comes from his amazing book- To Bless the Space Between Us. Blessings on your practice and a felt sense of blessing going with you throughout your day.

Mindful Christians: Living Embodied Faith

This meditation is created to bring to mind something or someone you're holding in your heart, mind, soul, spirit with a sense of blessing. We work with the definition of blessing offered by John O'Donohue in his book To Bless the Space Between Us. O'Donohue shares, "A blessing is a circle of light drawn around a person to protect, heal, and strengthen." This meditation crafts sacred space for a felt sense of blessing both upon whatever your seeking blessing (whether that be a person, situation, or pain) and you the holder of intention.

"I think what I've learned is there's great fruitfulness in messiness...you need dirt to grow things."- Heidi Haverkamp Season 4, Episode 1 of Messy Jesus Business, hosted by Sister Julia Walsh. IN THIS EPISODE: In this episode of Messy Jesus Business, Sister Julia Walsh talks with writer and Episcopal priest Heidi Haverkamp about why being a part-time hermit is essential to her, and how it serves her in her work. "Part of a healthy solitude is that you're growing in love for other people," she explains.   They discuss how discipleship of Jesus is meant to come from a place of freedom and joy and how that can offer clarity. They also talk discernment, and feeling called. "Pay attention to your obsessions. I think there's something of God in what we can't stop thinking about. Especially if it's a good thing." Heidi says. And they consider how mess can actually be a good thing, resulting in fruitfulness. ABOUT THE GUEST: Heidi Haverkamp is a writer, spiritual director, an Episcopal priest, and a part-time hermit. For 10 years, she served in parish ministry in churches in the Chicago area. She is the author of three books: Advent in Narnia, Holy Solitude, and Everyday Connections: Reflections and Practices for Year C, due out in September. ”Only the gospel of Jesus Christ can unite and bring peace to people of all races and nationalities. We who believe in that gospel- whatever our origins- must unite in love of each other and of our Savior Jesus Christ.” - Dallin H. OaksOn the podcast Taylor and I talked about her account “To Cheer and To Bless” as well as the YouTubes she airs every week: “Mix it Up:Black History and the Restoration.” She gives us a sneak peek of one of the stories she’s been researching about Susan Gray Reed Leggroon. More about her below:Susan Gray Reed LeggroonSusan was a slave from Mississippi until the Emancipation. She married Mr. Reed (we don’t know his first name) and they had 2 sons. He died and she was a widow. Even though the slaves were now considered “free”, a lot of people still lived like slaved as they worked on the plantations.Susan married again to a widower named Ned. He had a son from his previous marriage.Susan had a sister named Amanda. Amanda and her husband had joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were headed West and invited Ned and Susan to go with them. Ned and Susan joined them and crossed the plains to Utah with their 3 little boys. After 3 years in Utah, Ned and Susan were baptized members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Susan was a mother to 13 children. Only 8 of those children lived to adulthood. (She was so brave to keep going after she had lost 5 of her sweet kids!) Sept 3, 1875 Susan was able to go to the temple (at that time it was still under construction, so they used the Endowment House). At the temple she was able to make covenants with God and do proxy work for her mother Margaret, Ned’s first wife, and her first mother in law. Ned did the work for her first husband. (Soon after, black sisters were note allowed to receive their endowment. - Just so sad!!)Susan and Ned moved to Idaho and farmed. They planted trees that are still there! Ned died 2 years before Susan. God & History Last CCR Sunday By Louie Marsh, 1-10-2021 Show History Quotes – 5 slides.   1) God LOVES history!   He CREATED   “1In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1, ESV)   “1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:1–3, ESV)   2) He GUIDES & SUSTAINS it.   “21He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding;” (Daniel 2:21, ESV)   The grand difference between the ancient view of history and that found in Scripture is the difference between what is called “cyclical” and “linear-progressive.” A cyclical view indicates that there was no beginning to the universe and no goal for it; rather, history creates itself and eventually repeats itself—forever.   SHOW SLIDE WITH QUOTE THEN - History does not repeat itself – people do!   “8From there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built an altar to the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord.” (Genesis 12:8, ESV)   3) He USES history in our lives.   To help us REMEMBER Him & His work.   “4Then Joshua called the twelve men from the people of Israel, whom he had appointed, a man from each tribe. 5And Joshua said to them, “Pass on before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take up each of you a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, 6that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’ 7then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.”” (Joshua 4:4–7, ESV)   Show Baptisms slide – 83 names, these don’t count those baptized in the 5 years I was gone, a few years where I kept bad records, those baptized at the jail, etc.   To TEACH us how to act.     “4But he did not put their children to death, according to what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses, where the Lord commanded, “Fathers shall not die because of their children, nor children die because of their fathers, but each one shall die for his own sin.”” (2 Chronicles 25:4, ESV)   To BLESS us & show us His love.   “8This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” (Joshua 1:8, ESV)   To ENCOURAGE us to keep on going.   “4For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” (Romans 15:4, ESV)   4) God and the GOSPEL are rooted & grounded in history.   “16So Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said: “Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen. 17The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it.” (Acts 13:16–17, ESV)   “28And though they found in him no guilt worthy of death, they asked Pilate to have him executed. 29And when they had carried out all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. 30But God raised him from the dead, 31and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people.” (Acts 13:28–31, ESV)

Today I am sharing a beautiful poem I read this morning at my art table after a night of dreams full of worry and anxiety. When I read it to myself, I cried and something released. I thought I would read it to you and see if it releases something within you too. I am finding so much solace in poetry during this pandemic and find myself seeking it out to be a light and give me some guidance and hope in different moments. "A Morning Offering" by John O'Donohue from his wonderful book, To Bless the Space Between Us. I bless the night that nourished my heart To set the ghosts of longing free Into the flow and figure of dream That went to harvest from the dark Bread for the hunger no one sees. All that is eternal in me Welcomes the wonder of this day, The field of brightness it creates Offering time for each thing To arise and illuminate. I place on the altar of dawn: The quiet loyalty of breath, The tent of thought where I shelter, Waves of desire I am shore to And all beauty drawn to the eye. May my mind come alive today To the invisible geography That invites me to new frontiers, To break the dead shell of yesterdays, To risk being disturbed and changed. May I have the courage today To live the life that I would love, To postpone my dream no longer But do at last what I came here for And waste my heart on fear no more. This month's special episode concerning inner, personal experiences in Celtic Spirituality is an interview with my aunt, Dr. Patricia Shea. She is Professor Emeritus of Education, and holds an MA in Religious Studies. Currently, she is a life coach, faciliator, and spiritual director. Patricia was also a Catholic nun in the Order of the School Sisters of Notre Dame for many years. At this stage of her life, however, she considers herself a Celtic Crone. What Patricia will be sharing in this interview is an integration of what she has learned from others within the area of Celtic Spirituality, combined with her own personal perspectives based upon her life experiences. This is not an academic discussion, but more a space for Patricia to share her own insights about her spiritual path, including her views about religion, and mysticism as well. We discuss what Celtic Spirituality is, the Celtic Wheel and how this is attuned to the Earth, the Winter Solstice, and even some opportunities a worldwide pandemic can offer to help us all explore deeper questions about life. In this episode, I read John O'Donohue's beautiful poem called, "For Light" from his book, To Bless the Space Between Us. on the eve of the presidential election in the United States, which has the air feeling so tense, anxious, full of fear and worry about what will happen. This poem is some medicine for me tonight so I wanted to share it with you. I read it by candlelight while sitting at my little art table. John O'Dononue was an Irish poet, philosopher and spiritual leader. "For Light" by John O'Donohue Light cannot see inside things. That is what the dark is for: Minding the interior, Nurturing the draw of growth Through places where death In its own way turns into life. In the glare of neon times, Let our eyes not be worn By surfaces that shine With hunger made attractive. That our thoughts may be true light, Finding their way into words Which have the weight of shadow To hold the layers of truth. That we never place our trust In minds claimed by empty light, Where one-sided certainties Are driven by false desire. When we look into the heart, May our eyes have the kindness And reverence of candlelight. That the searching of our minds Be equal to the oblique Crevices and corners where The mystery continues to dwell, Glimmering in fugitive light. When we are confined inside The dark house of suffering That moonlight might find a window. When we become false and lost That the severe noon-light Would cast our shadow clear. When we love, that dawn-light Would lighten our feet Upon the waters. As we grow old, that twilight Would illuminate treasure In the fields of memory. And when we come to search for God, Let us first be robed in night, Put on the mind of morning To feel the rush of light Spread slowly inside The color and stillness Of a found world. I also share why this poem is meaningful and healing for me in my art practice and my life. John O'Donohue was an Irish poet, philosopher and spiritual teacher. For a New Beginning By John O'Donohue In out-of-the-way places of the heart, Where your thoughts never think to wander, This beginning has been quietly forming, Waiting until you were ready to emerge. For a long time it has watched your desire, Feeling the emptiness growing inside you, Noticing how you willed yourself on, Still unable to leave what you had outgrown. It watched you play with the seduction of safety And the gray promises that sameness whispered, Heard the waves of turmoil rise and relent, Wondered would you always live like this. Then the delight, when your courage kindled, And out you stepped onto new ground, Your eyes young again with energy and dream, A path of plenitude opening before you. Though your destination is not yet clear You can trust the promise of this opening; Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning That is at one with your life’s desire. Awaken your spirit to adventure; Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk; Soon you will be home in a new rhythm, For your soul senses the world that awaits you. May this be a morning of innocent beginning, When the gift within you slips clear Of the sticky web of the personal With its hurt and its hauntings, And fixed fortress corners, A morning when you become a pure vessel For what wants to ascend from silence, May your imagination know The grace of perfect danger, To reach beyond imitation, And the wheel of repetition, Deep into the call of all The unfinished and unsolved. Until the veil of the unknown yields And something original begins To stir toward your senses And grow stronger in your heart In order to come to birth In a clean line of form, That claims from time A rhythm not yet heard, That calls space to A different shape. May it be its own force field And dwell uniquely Between the heart and the light To surprise the hungry eye By how deftly it fits About its secret loss. I also talk about self-doubt as an artist and our need for connection and community to keep us going. This week Mark taught on the power of singing praises to God. The lesson had 3 areas of focus: 1.Biblical instruction -The Bible tells us to sing, to worship God, to bless, honor, and praise what God has done. 2. Historical practice -Worship is giving God His natural place. Singing affects the way we shape thoughts, actions, and feelings. 3. Practical exercises -Worship and singing needs to focus on our target: God. Worship is not entertainment, but a place of holiness. We learn that singing requires both sides of the brain. Mark highlights Bible passages that show our singing impacts how we think, act, and feel toward God, personally and corporately.

Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church (REPC) - Sermons

In Philippians 4 the imprisoned Apostle Paul says, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.” It seems a strange command for him to give when his own situation is so dire. However, that is what makes the command so powerful. For we can rejoice even in the midst of our suffering as Christians. We have in the Lord Jesus Christ the power to bless the Lord at all times for we know that in all things we are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus our Lord. In this time of hardship and loss we might wonder how we can rejoice in the Lord. We don't do it out of ignorance or stoic indifference, but rather we rejoice because we know that the Lord is ever-present to save and deliver us from all our troubles. In Psalm 34 David is expressing his joy in the Lord in the midst of a difficult and trying situation. The heading of the Psalm tells us that David wrote this Psalm as he was fleeing from the city of Gath. David was on the run from King Saul and sought refuge in Gath, however, after a short stay there his life was again threated so he had to flee back into Israel. And in the midst of his hardship he wrote, “I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” (Psalm 34:1 ESV) Can you praise the Lord at all times? Not just in the good times but in the challenging and stressful times can you still praise the Lord? To be prepared for the sermon take time this week to read and to meditate upon Psalm 34, 1 Samuel 21:10-15, 2 Chronicles 20:12, John 12:13;15:10-11; 19:33-36, Philippians 4:4-6, and Westminster Shorter Catechism # 26. Outline: To Bless the Lord at All Times We Must Be Dedicated to Prayer (vv. 4-7) To Bless the Lord at All Times We Must Experience His Goodness (verses 8-10) To Bless the Lord at All Times We Must Obey His Commands (verses 11-14) To Bless the Lord at All Times We Must Trust His Salvation (verses 15-22)

Taken from Potter's Inn Soul Care Conversations - Episode 30, The Great Annual Examen For a New Beginning In out-of-the-way places of the heart, Where your thoughts never think to wander, This beginning has been quietly forming, Waiting until you were ready to emerge. We love poetry — and we find that, of all literary forms, poetry seems to most quickly and assuredly bring the attentive reader to the threshold of silence. "Poets all see silence as sacred ground," notes Kevin, "because it's from the silence the poems come." Together we muse on how poetry puts us in touch with our bodies, our intuition, and how the relationship between poetry and silence is, perhaps, just the same as the relationship between silence and sound that forms the foundation of music. Much like musicians use notes, poets are the composers of words. They pay such attention to the space between. More then we do in typical writing, typical everyday language, they heed the mystery, they listen to the offbeat, and they use it. They know how to harness it, they know how to hold it open-handed... it's I would dare to say closer to silence then any other writing is. — Cassidy Hall Because we are all "poetry geeks" pretty much just as much as we are "silence geeks," we joke that trying to create a podcast about poetry should take us 200 hours (or more). So this week's episode is just a check-in, a snapshot of where our journey with poetry has taken us at least for now. From Mary Oliver's earthy reflection written in response to a cancer diagnosis, to Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska's playful consideration of how the experience of the mind or soul has an "embodied" or "natural" dimension, to the more ethereal or even transcendent perspective of Evelyn Underhill, the poems we consider in this episode dance between matter and spirit, between consciousness and mystery, between wonder and doubt and insight. And while none of these poems are specifically "about" silence, they all usher us into that place where word and silence kiss. Silence is embodied, and yet silence is paradoxically also immaterial... To encounter silence implies materiality. — Carl McColman Some of the poets, authors and resources mentioned in this episode: Mary Oliver, Devotions Thomas Merton, Collected Poems Irene Zimmerman, Incarnation Mary Oliver, Thirst Mary Oliver, Blue Horses John Keats, Complete Poems Wisława Szymborska, Map: Collected and Last Poems Karl Rahner, Foundations of Christian Faith Thomas Aquinas, Selected Writings Evelyn Underhill, Immanence Albert Einstein, Ideas and Opinions Maggie Ross, The Fire of Your Life Patrick Shen (dir.), In Pursuit of Silence Jan Richardson, Circle of Grace John O'Donohue, To Bless the Space Between Us Willis Barnstone, tr., The Poems of Jesus Christ Bonnie Thurston, Practicing Silence May Sarton, Halfway to Silence May Sarton, The Silence Now Jane Hirshfield, Nine Gates Edna St. Vincent Millay, Collected Poems Rumi, The Essential Rumi Silence isn't a fleeing from the world, it's a fleeing to the world. “What Does This Mean?” Acts 2:1-12 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontusand Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”   It Means Power   Everyone who has accepted Christ as their Savior has the Holy Spirit within them.   John 20:22 tells us “Then Jesus breathed on them and said, "receive the Holy Spirit.”   The Pentecostal experience comes aftera Salvation experience.   Acts 19:1, “While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the interior and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers ?”” “No,they answered, “we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”    Power in Life, Miracles.   Power & Passion in Sharing Your Story   The location of Peter’s greatest failure became the location of Peter’s greatest success.   Power in Prayer   It Means Persecution The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is going to make many uncomfortable.   After the display of power at Pentecost everyone had to make a decision.   It Means God Cares for People   Why was this power given? To Bless the Church and Bless the Lost.   God gave the Holy Spirit to the Church, not just the Apostles.   God wants to give you His Baptism of Power!   There is no real place one has to be in order to receive the Baptism, but in everycase there was an expression of Faith by the person receiving.   Ask, pray, believe, and receive.   Get more resources to live a life of faith at RiversChurch.org

As is always the case when Parker and Jerry get together, this is a conversation packed full of deep lessons on leadership, the shadow, the importance of relational trust, and the incredible power present in community. This episode will leave you with new profound questions and answers about yourself, your role in your organization, and the power you hold, but may not yet accept.
