Many ideas about the end times including the role of Israel, the mark of the beast, and the rapture became popular through Hal Lindsey's best-selling book from the 1970s, “The Late Great Planet Earth.” Lindsay died last week at 95. We discuss his legacy and how his book is still shaping the American church long after most of its theology has been debunked. Then, Kaitlyn talks to Douglas McKelvey about his series of prayer books, “Every Moment Holy.” He explains the value of using written prayers and not just spontaneous ones, and how to find God in the ordinary activities of life. Also this week—why are Bible sales way up but church attendance still declining? And 80's orca fashion makes a comeback.   Holy Post Plus My Hill to Die On: Tipping https://www.patreon.com/posts/117227746/   0:00 - Intro   1:50 - Show Starts   3:29 - Theme Song   3:50 - Sponsor - Sundays Dog Food - Get 40% off your first order of Sundays. It's about why. From the beginning, God's purpose has been to dwell with His image bearers in unbroken fellowship. It's tempting to think that our sin ruined that plan, and that Jesus was God's Plan B. But as Edward Klink says, Jesus and the Church were always Plan A. More than that, God is not replacing creation; He's renewing it, and you and I have been invited to participate in that renewal as God's agents of redemption. Today, I have the absolute pleasure of sharing my conversation with the one and only Douglas McKelvey. Douglas is a songwriter, author, and liturgy writer extraordinaire. I have never met someone like Douglas. His gift with words and passion for Christ cultivates a visceral invitation to be more present in this life, to find your fight again as you walk this weary way, and speaks to our hope of the next life with Jesus. Douglas shares with me his story of what led him to Nashville, TN, his journey from songwriting to fiction writing and the idea of unpacking his belief that every moment in this life is sacramental, and sometimes words can help us to be present. Thus, the birth of Every Moment Holy. There are now 3 volumes of Every Moment Holy, each unique in how they offer opportunities for us to be awake to the moments we are living in. Whether that is something as simple as waking up in the morning and enjoying a sunrise, something unique like beginning a novel, or the keeping of bees, holiday celebrations, to going on a trip, there is a liturgy for it in one of these volumes. Many of these liturgies, especially in volume two, also hold space for the hard and holy moments around grief and lament, and even for those facing the end of their life. I cannot begin to express how much many of these liturgies have ministered to me as we've walked through many losses, and the anniversary of losses, over the last few years. As it is that time of year, Douglas and I also talk about how to embrace the season of advent,  which asks our hearts to prepare Christ room, but also to ask “where is our hope?” as we wait for Jesus to come back again. He even blesses us with a reading of his “A Liturgy for the Start of the Christmas Season.” I hope all of this conversation serves as a blessing for you in this season. I hope it is serves as an invitation to prepare Him room not just for now, but for always. And I hope and pray, it reminds you that you are not alone in this life, no matter how it may seem, and Jesus is coming back for us. You matter. Your story matters. Merry Christmas! From Every Moment Holy by Douglas McKelvey. “We praise you, O Lord, for our limits!  limits you have given us for our good and for your glory.”  The subtitle of Blessed Are the Rest of Us is “How Limits and Longing Make Us Whole.” I love that word “limits.” Limits speaks to more than weakness, more than failure, more than the ache in us for justice. Our limits in the presence of the divine is part of the core of who we are. Limits, as the prayer says, are for our good.   Find Every Moment Holy by Douglas McKelvey here. How do we live, in all our moments, learning to emulate God's mercy? I can be frustrated with the world's lack of care, the intrinsic ableism in all of us that allows for casual complaints about kids and their need to get with the program of typical development. But, even in that hurt I am invited to curiosity and care. To be a mercy-emulator, to practice the way of Jesus.  To see the dignity and worth of every person I encounter, pausing in my frustration long enough to show interest in the real person, made in the image of God, longing for mercy.    Links:  Find Every Moment Holy by Douglas McKelvey here. "When I opened the pages of Every Moment Holy, I found beautiful, simple prayers for specific moments of my daily life,” our guest recalls. “From morning coffee to changing a diaper, as well as prayers for gardening, grieving, or welcoming a new pet to the family. The prayers in this little book have blessed me time and again. Whether praying alone or with others, Every Moment Holy connects me to the sacredness of everyday moments.    Our guest for this episode is Leslie Eiler Thompson, who's creative pursuits take many forms – from podcast hosting & producing, to storytelling & writing, to owning a creative consulting studio. She studied commercial music at Belmont University and as a podcast host, Leslie leads the Someone Like Me podcast, which tells the firsthand stories of human sex trafficking survivors in the state of Tennessee. Part of charting the cultural landscape for Christian leaders is promoting forms for communal and historical identity, rather than a flippant individualism. We've in a series right now of exploring the liturgies found in “Every Moment Holy” by Douglas McKelvey. Today's liturgy is a great follow up to the time we spent on stewardship in the last episode. The prayer shared in this episode called “A Liturgy Before Shopping” is a little longer than the others, so I'm going to let the prayer speak for itself. And it surely will.

I've decided to make July the month where I value the small moments- the daily tasks- and recognize the sacredness of them. Reading “Every Moment Holy” by Douglas McKelvey has been an inspiration for me to that end.   In this episode, we are going to be focusing on the stewardship of tasks-particularly as it relates to domestic tasks. I've been leaning into having a greater Biblical understanding of stewardship in my whole life, so I want to unpack that a bit and share it with you.

The average person living today has more access to greater amounts of information than ever before in the history of the world. It truly is a flood of information.  At times, that's an advantage. But often there's tension and overwhelm, too - sometimes even outweighing the advantages. I think it's because were not created to actually bear the burden of all of this information. In this episode, I'll be sharing a prayer called, “A Liturgy for Those Flooded by Too Much Information” from Every Moment Holy (Vol. 1) by Douglas McKelvey in hopes that it will remind you that grace is available to turn the mundane and sometimes overwhelming grind into sacred moments.

What does it look like to lament in suffering and hold onto the hope of the resurrection? Sharing from Scripture and her own experiences, author Aubrey Sampson invites us to bring our laments to the Lord. The Louder Song by Aubrey Sampson “Lament means an impolite plea, so you are, with as much audacity and rawness as you can muster, crying out to God in your grief and anger.” “We're not crying out to avoid. We're not expressing [our laments] to nothingness. We're giving them to God Himself, who knows suffering, walks with people who are suffering, promises that he is with us in our suffering, and does something redemptive in our suffering. The beauty is that the invitation is to cry out to God rather than sit and wallow and allow despair to take over.” “There is a treasure trove of sufferers who have gone before us - and not pretended like their suffering didn't exist.” “Not only has He given all of His children permission to cry out in lament, but He's given us a really beautiful example and language that we can use in our own lament as well.” “If we want true intimacy with God, that's going to mean seasons of doubt and frustration and suffering and pain. But because God is so good, He invites us to come to Him with those things rather than walk away from Him in defeat and doubt.” “That's the kindness of God: He knows that in our heartache and devastation, sometimes we can't formulate what to say, and so we can just open Scripture and read those laments back to God as a way to begin that work of lamenting.” “Most laments in Scripture begin with the word ‘how.'” “In our darkness and in our despair and in our disorder, God is not far removed [...] He is Emmanuel God.” “We want answers, and we don't get that. But what we always get in our seasons of crying out to God is God's presence and God's with-ness with us.” “The best thing we can do is sit with people in their pain.” “We worship a Suffering Servant. He entered into our suffering and took on our suffering, and the promise is that there will be an end to suffering because of Jesus's work on the cross.” “O Jesus, in deepest night and agony, you spoke these words of trust and surrender to God the Father in Gethsemane, and I want to say in times of fear and distress those same words: My Father, I do not understand You, but I trust You.” “The will of God is always resurrection, not destruction. It's always beauty, not ashes. It's always hope, not defeat.” “We should never be quick to brush past the suffering of Jesus, our own suffering, and the suffering of other people, but we can look to our suffering with that good end in mind, which is always Jesus's victory.” “A Liturgy Before Mourning with Those Who Mourn” by Douglas McKelvey, from Every Moment Holy, Volume II What's changing our lives: Aubrey: Korean dramas on Netflix Heather: Friends having kids Keane: Meeting neighbors We'd love to hear from you! podcast@teachbeyond.org Podcast Website: https://teachbeyond.org/podcast  Learn about TeachBeyond: https://teachbeyond.org/
