Eds steps to the hill with a cutter; the inspiring life of Dave Dravecky. From humble beginnings in Youngstown, Ohio, Dravecky beat the odds and made it to the majors and became one of the big game pitchers of the 1980's. His inspirational career was tragically cut short at the end of the decade but that didn't stop him from continuing to serve a higher purpose beyond the diamond.
Three players in big league history have more than one career home run but no other hits. Two were players that got only a cup of coffee or two in the big leagues; the third, believe it or not, was a pitcher. We have their stories. Plus - the Rafael Devers trade, reflecting on Sly Stone and Brian Wilson, and some 1989 baseball cards.Errata: Nolan Fontana was claimed off waivers by the Angels, not the Dodgers. Andy van Slyke won 5 Gold Glove Awards, not 3. Houston replaced Bill Virdon with Bob Lillis in 1982, not Hal Lanier. On June 28, 1997, David Wells wore Babe Ruth's cap, valued then at $35,000, for one inning during a pitching performance - the Yankees fined Wells $2,500. In September 1988, Dave Dravecky was diagnosed with a desmoid tumor in his left arm. He attempted a return in 1989. In his second appearance during a pitch in the fifth inning his humerus bone snapped. Doctors amputated his left arm in 1991 after discovering the tumor had returned.Episodes mentioned:Ep. 72 - Seeing the World Through Baseball w/ Cousin Wolf (Matt Halvorson). Dave Dravecky, a left-handed major league pitcher who played for the Padres and Giants, brings his infectious zest for life and his compelling life narrative to this episode. He recounts his personal faith journey, starting from a seemingly mystical encounter with God on a playground at the age of 12, a memory that has stayed with him for over 50 years. His path to a deeper connection with God was marked by various pivotal moments, such as a transformative baseball trip to South America where he witnessed extreme poverty, a roommate who shared a small baseball book, and a Bible he found in a hotel room drawer.Listening to Dave share the challenging highs and lows of his journey, which included a battle with cancer, treatment, and an unexpected return to baseball, is truly inspiring. Despite being dubbed the "come-back kid" after his return to the sport, Dave's life shortly after, once again took a major turn. He emphasizes the importance of learning to express his struggles during tough times, highlighting that even Christians can experience depression. His remarkable story is nothing short of extraordinary, and I encourage you to hear all the inspiring details directly from him on Amazing Greats."Amazing Greats" is a library of interviews with highly successful people who have amazing career and life stories and who share how God has impacted their journey. On Part 2, 1982 Brewers yield to Billy Ball, the early 80s Oakland A's, and how Rickey Henderson redefined the meaning of a hero to Adam. We raise the stakes on our trade proposals, pushing bigger ticket items into the middle. Adam and I then move to 1987, remembering Adam's exile to Barstow, California, and the oasis of being able to listen to KNBR's Hank Greenberg calling Giants games way far away at Candlestick. For the Giants, their big trade in 1987 was their acquisition of Kevin Mitchell and Dave Dravecky. Dravecky's dramatic comeback from shoulder cancer, his subsequent reinjury, and his ultimate amputation give us a lot to talk about and two amputees in one show. Finally, Adam steers us toward the King of Late Night, David Letterman. He goes with a special episode where Dave featured Harmon Killebrew and I went with one featuring Joe Niekro.

At Olympic Stadium in Montreal, in his second start after coming back from cancer surgery (that involved removing 50% of his deltoid muscle), Giants southpaw pitcher, Dave Dravecky suffers a broken arm. Dave collapses to the ground and clutches his left arm in severe pain after throwing a wild pitch to Tim Raines. This will be his final pitch. In 1991, he went on to have his arm, shoulder and the left side of his collarbone amputated in order to spare his life from the spread of cancer. In enduring the amputation and the loss of his childhood dream, Dave was to discover his real purpose in life. In this episode, Dave shares how losing his arm and the dream of baseball became a platform to share hope with the suffering around the world. Tune in for what is a candid and inspiring story of vulnerability, discovery and faith when a man lets go of what he thought his life would be, to discover who he really is.https://www.davedravecky.comhttps://www.endurance.org

Dave and Jan Dravecky return for part two of an interview on cancer and our relationship with God. In this episode, they discuss one of the biggest things cancer victims face—and that's fear. Our guests are no different. They went through some of the darkest times and the Lord met them in an amazing way to help them face their fears. Dave Dravecky was a successful Major League Baseball pitcher whose story gripped the sports world over three decades ago when he came down with cancer in his throwing arm. Amazingly, he recovered from his first bout and returned to the mound. But then it came back, and he had his left arm amputated. His career came to an end, but as you heard last week, the Lord transformed Dave and Jan. They have been faithfully leading a powerful ministry called Endurance with Dave and Jan Dravecky, helping people around the world who are experiencing pain and suffering, whether it be from cancer or another illness or disease. Dave Dravecky's story is full of hope, courage and perseverance in the midst of deep uncertainty. Above it all, he loves to share how his faith in Jesus guided him through it all. In 1988, he was at the pinnacle of his Major League Baseball career until later that season when doctors discovered cancer in his throwing arm, forcing him to remove half of his deltoid muscle. Despite being told by doctors, “Short of a miracle, you'll never pitch again,” he returned the following season and pitched a 4-3 win against the Cincinnati Reds in his first start back. His comeback, though, lasted just one more start. In his next appearance against the Montreal Expos, his arm split in two. His career was done. On this episode of "Get in the Game," Dravecky shares that story and how God has used him and his platform in the wake of it. "Get in the Game" is part of the Sports Spectrum Podcast Network. Happy 420! We are basic bitching on this episode and talking about our adventures at opening night at the San Francisco Giants game, SF Cops, and former SF Giants pitcher Dave Dravecky. We also talk about the new Disneynature film "Born in China" and ask the question are there still drive-in movie theaters? Tune in, light a blunt and enjoy.
