Dave Dravecky, a left-handed major league pitcher who played for the Padres and Giants, brings his infectious zest for life and his compelling life narrative to this episode. He recounts his personal faith journey, starting from a seemingly mystical encounter with God on a playground at the age of 12, a memory that has stayed with him for over 50 years. His path to a deeper connection with God was marked by various pivotal moments, such as a transformative baseball trip to South America where he witnessed extreme poverty, a roommate who shared a small baseball book, and a Bible he found in a hotel room drawer.Listening to Dave share the challenging highs and lows of his journey, which included a battle with cancer, treatment, and an unexpected return to baseball, is truly inspiring. Despite being dubbed the "come-back kid" after his return to the sport,  Dave's life shortly after,  once again took a major turn.  He emphasizes the importance of learning to express his struggles during tough times, highlighting that even Christians can experience depression. His remarkable story is nothing short of extraordinary, and I encourage you to hear all the inspiring details directly from him on Amazing Greats."Amazing Greats" is a library of interviews with highly successful people who have amazing career and life stories and who share how God has impacted their journey. On Part 2, 1982 Brewers yield to Billy Ball, the early 80s Oakland A's, and how Rickey Henderson redefined the meaning of a hero to Adam. We raise the stakes on our trade proposals, pushing bigger ticket items into the middle. Adam and I then move to 1987, remembering Adam's exile to Barstow, California, and the oasis of being able to listen to KNBR's Hank Greenberg calling Giants games way far away at Candlestick. For the Giants, their big trade in 1987 was their acquisition of Kevin Mitchell and Dave Dravecky. Dravecky's dramatic comeback from shoulder cancer, his subsequent reinjury, and his ultimate amputation give us a lot to talk about and two amputees in one show. Finally, Adam steers us toward the King of Late Night, David Letterman. He goes with a special episode where Dave featured Harmon Killebrew and I went with one featuring Joe Niekro.

At Olympic Stadium in Montreal, in his second start after coming back from cancer surgery (that involved removing 50% of his deltoid muscle), Giants southpaw pitcher, Dave Dravecky suffers a broken arm. Dave collapses to the ground and clutches his left arm in severe pain after throwing a wild pitch to Tim Raines. This will be his final pitch. In 1991, he went on to have his arm, shoulder and the left side of his collarbone amputated in order to spare his life from the spread of cancer. In enduring the amputation and the loss of his childhood dream, Dave was to discover his real purpose in life. In this episode, Dave shares how losing his arm and the dream of baseball became a platform to share hope with the suffering around the world. Tune in for what is a candid and inspiring story of vulnerability, discovery and faith when a man lets go of what he thought his life would be, to discover who he really is.https://www.davedravecky.comhttps://www.endurance.org

Dave and Jan Dravecky return for part two of an interview on cancer and our relationship with God. In this episode, they discuss one of the biggest things cancer victims face—and that's fear. Our guests are no different. They went through some of the darkest times and the Lord met them in an amazing way to help them face their fears. Dave Dravecky was a successful Major League Baseball pitcher whose story gripped the sports world over three decades ago when he came down with cancer in his throwing arm. Amazingly, he recovered from his first bout and returned to the mound. But then it came back, and he had his left arm amputated. His career came to an end, but as you heard last week, the Lord transformed Dave and Jan. They have been faithfully leading a powerful ministry called Endurance with Dave and Jan Dravecky, helping people around the world who are experiencing pain and suffering, whether it be from cancer or another illness or disease. Dave Dravecky's story is full of hope, courage and perseverance in the midst of deep uncertainty. Above it all, he loves to share how his faith in Jesus guided him through it all. In 1988, he was at the pinnacle of his Major League Baseball career until later that season when doctors discovered cancer in his throwing arm, forcing him to remove half of his deltoid muscle. Despite being told by doctors, “Short of a miracle, you'll never pitch again,” he returned the following season and pitched a 4-3 win against the Cincinnati Reds in his first start back. His comeback, though, lasted just one more start. In his next appearance against the Montreal Expos, his arm split in two. His career was done. On this episode of "Get in the Game," Dravecky shares that story and how God has used him and his platform in the wake of it. "Get in the Game" is part of the Sports Spectrum Podcast Network. (Riverton, WY) - Former Major League Baseball pitcher Dave Dravecky joined Jerrad Anderson on the County 10 Podcast this week. Dravecky played for the San Francisco Giants from 1982-1987 and the San Diego Padres from 1987-1989. In 1988, Dravecky underwent surgery on a cancerous tumor in his arm. Dave made his return to the pitching mound in 1989. That season, Dravecky threw what is now known as "The Pitch Heard Round The World." His humorous bone snapped during the pitch, causing Dravecky to collapse on the field. After a doctor examination, it was determined that Dave's cancer had returned and he needed his pitching arm amputated, ending his career. Dave now travels as a motivational speaker and has written three books. He'll be attending the Riverton Boys and Girls Club fundraising breakfast at the Fremont County Fairgrounds on Tuesday, April 27th. Full details about that event can be found here. Episode 42 Dave Dravecky's story is one of finding hope, courage, and perseverance in the midst of deep uncertainty. In 1988, he was in the peak of his Major League Baseball career. Pitching for the San Francisco Giants, his Opening Day win was overshadowed later that season when doctors discovered cancer in his throwing arm and had to remove half of his deltoid muscle. He came back a year later, defying significant odds. Despite being told by doctors, “Short of a miracle, you’ll never pitch again,” he pitched a 4-3 win against the Cincinnati Reds in his first start back, but sadly his comeback lasted just one more start. In his next start against the Montreal Expos, his arm split in two. His career was done. After his comeback and fall from the mound, the cancer returned. The arm refused to get better and he was forced to retire in November 1989. His arm, shoulder blade, and the left side of his collarbone had to be amputated for fear the cancer would spread and possibly take his life. In this conversation, he and his wife Jan share stories of his career, the season in and around his cancer battle of career-ending injury, and how their faith has been shaped by all of it. It's become a platform for him to share his story of hope through suffering and how his faith in God has been strengthened. Dave and Jan founded Endurance with Jan and Dave Dravecky, a nonprofit organization located in Colorado, and he's the author of "When You Can't Come Back." Understanding that, as a Christian, you are ‘in' Christ Jesus revolutionises how you see yourself, your self-image, your identity and how you understand your value to God.Write your name on a piece of paper. Take hold of your Bible to represent Christ. Place the paper in the book and close it. You are in Christ. Where the book goes you go. Where the paper goes he goes. Have you ever had a moment in life when everything is going exactly the way you hoped it would? Maybe even better than you hoped—that time when you had complete joy and peace? Maybe you looked up with your hands raised to heaven and declared, “God, you are so good!”. What about that moment in life when everything seems to come crashing down. Those moments when you are left with little to no hope. Instead of peace and joy, you are full of despair. If you acknowledge God at all it’s something like, “God, how could you allow this to happen to me?”.Maybe you are in that place of despair right now. You wonder if you will ever find any semblance of hope, peace, or joy in life. You wonder why God would ever allow you to even be in this dark place—or worst yet, maybe you blame God for doing this to you?My guest today knows exactly what it is like to go from a mountaintop experience to the darkest, deepest valley. There is hope. You will find peace again, and you will experience joy unspeakable.Dave Dravecky worked his way through the minor leagues to one day find his lifelong dream of becoming a Major League pitcher come true. His career was moving forward when tragedy struck in the form of a cancerous tumor on his pitching arm. The doctors told Dave that, short of a miracle, he would never pitch again. But Dave was focused on his comeback to Major League baseball. Less than a year after surgery removed half of Dave’s deltoid muscle, he made his comeback. He allowed 4 hits in 8 innings to beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-3. It was one of those mountaintop moments! But Dave’s next Major League start would be his last.I encourage you to share this episode with everyone you know. Today's Sportsfaith Podcast guest is former MLB pitcher Dave Dravecky. Dave's story is one of finding hope, courage and perseverance in the midst of dark and overwhelming uncertainty. In 1988, Dave was at the top of his game and his life. Dave's opening day victory over the Dodgers was overshadowed later that fall by the discovery of cancer and the removal of half of the deltoid muscle in his pitching arm. After battling cancer in his pitching arm, Dave came back a year later to defy the odds and pitch once again in the Major Leagues. Despite being told by the doctors, “Short of a miracle, you'll never pitch again,” Dave pitched a 4-3 win for the San Francisco Giants that day. Sadly, the comeback was short-lived. Five days later, he threw “…the pitch that could be heard round the world vs the Montreal Expos.” Dave's arm had split in two!! After my comeback and fall from the mound, the cancer returned, yet again. The arm refused to get better so Dave decided to retire from his dream, the game of baseball, in November of 1989. Finally, the arm along with Dave's shoulder blade and the left side of his collarbone had to be amputated for fear the cancer would spread and take his life. Little did Dave know that the loss of his childhood dream would become a platform to share hope with the suffering around the world.

In this inspiring podcast former baseball star, Dave Dravecky and Dr. Chuck F. Betters talk about how cancer destroyed Dave’s successful baseball career and Dave’s struggle to deal with not only the loss of his career but understanding his true identity. In the 1980s Dave Dravecky was a long-sought-after relief specialist. His pitching helped key the San Diego Padres' World Series run. After a few years in San Diego, Dravecky moved on to San Francisco, where he was a key part of their World Series run. However, things in 1989 would take a bitter turn for the Youngstown, Ohio native. Experiencing weakness in his pitching arm, he was examined by the Giants team doctor. The doctor noticed Purpose Aa lump in Dravecky's arm and sent him to a specialist in New York. It was there that Dravecky learned his pitching arm was ripe with cancer. Draveckey underwent treatment in hopes on returning to baseball. In September of 1989, Dravecky returned to the pitching mound, mere months after undergoing treatment for cancer. In one appearance, Draveckey's arm, weakened from treatment, snapped and broke while he delivered a pitch. He would re-break the same arm weeks later celebrating his team's berth in the World Series. Any full-time comeback for Dravecky would be forever denied when in 1991, in a surgery to save his life, his pitching arm was amputated above the elbow. Dave Draveckey's plight inspired the Giants, though they were unable to overcome an earthquake, and an ultra powerful Oakland A's lineup. Dravecky retired officially from baseball after losing his arm. But his story was just beginning.

Episode 288 Dave Dravecky's story is one of hope, courage and perseverance in the midst of dark and overwhelming uncertainty. In 1988 Dave was at the top of his game and life. Not only did he have a wonderful family but he was reaching his all-star peak playing the game of his childhood dreams. His 5-1 opening day victory over the Dodgers was overshadowed later that fall by the discovery of cancer and the removal of half of the deltoid muscle in his pitching arm. For baseball fans worldwide Dave Dravecky etched his name into history on August 10, 1989. Defying all odds, after battling cancer in his pitching arm, Dave came back to pitch once again in the Major Leagues. People were on their feet cheering and anticipating the game while he stretched and warmed up. He became an inspiration not only to cancer fighters, but to all who needed hope that day. As Dave took the mound, no one could deny the miracle that was taking place. After being told by his doctors, "Short of a miracle, you'll never pitch again," Dave pitched a 4-3 win for the San Francisco Giants. Sadly, Dave's comeback was short-lived. Five days later, in Montreal, Dave threw " the pitch that could be heard round the world." Dave's arm had split in two. As he tumbled to the ground, his mind filled with doubt and fear. Little did he know that the dream he had since he was a little boy, was simply a platform for his purpose to share hope with the suffering around the world. Dave's triumphant defeat of the cancer and his return to the game of baseball is chronicled in his award winning book, Comeback, which has sold more than 650,000 copies. After Dave's comeback and fall from the mound, with the weakened bone, the cancer returned yet again. The arm was not going to get better at this point so Dave decided to retire from his dream, the game of baseball, in November of 1989. Slowly the treatment and the cancer ate away Dave's arm and simultaneously his career. Radiation treatment after radiation treatment resulted in a staph infection that placed a hole in the middle of his arm exposing bone. Finally, the arm along with Dave's shoulder blade and left side of his collar bone had to be amputated for fear the cancer would spread and take Dave's life. Because of the overwhelming response to their story and their desire to walk along side others who suffer, Dave and Jan founded Dave Dravecky's Outreach of Hope, a nonprofit organization in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Draveckys realized through their own experiences that one cannot battle cancer alone, so they have created this ministry to bring hope for those who hurt. On this episode of the podcast, we hear Dave's incredible story of a major league career cut short, hearing the word "cancer" for the first time, trusting God, doubting God, and how his faith ultimately saw him through his recovery. Why do bad things happen to good people? What is the reason for suffering? Is there a purpose for pain? Are we just victims of circumstance? Is there a God? And if God is real, does He care about us individually in our deepest despair? If you or a loved one are asking these questions, if you are in a valley of depression or despair, you desperately need hope. You need a hope that is real, a hope that is firm, a hope that lasts no matter how long or deep your valley. How did Dave Dravecky, the famous pitcher for the San Francisco Giants, find HOPE after his pitching arm snaps and he has to face life as an amputee? Charlie Wedemeyer is one of the most winning coaches in the history of high school football who found HOPE confined to a wheelchair with Lou Gehrig's disease. Journey of Hope provides you with the hope you will need to overcome fear, pain, loneliness, doubt and despair - with a hope that is real, a hope you can build your life upon.
