Albert Einstein once said, “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.”This principle has been put to the test in the era of seemingly constant updates in technology. While many are slow to accept and implement said changes, others are quick to adapt. The same is true in the world of Emergency Management and Response. In this episode of the Disaster Tough Podcast, host John Scardena welcomes back the host of the EM Weekly Podcast, Zack Borst to dive into the exciting changes in technology happening in the field and what the outlook is for such innovations going forward. As Emergency Management experts with multiple years of experience in the field, both Zack and John have seen the practical benefits that innovations in technology can offer. In this episode, they share success stories of tech implementation in the field, and the struggle they and other Emergency Managers over the years have faced in getting other innovations approved and off the ground. When it comes to confronting challenges, it's rare that they get any easier with time. One of the biggest challenges for emergency managers is tackling the massive Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) gaps that have festered in emergency management for decades. These failures affect how we plan, respond, and recover from disasters. The lack of DEI in our agencies and organizations also holds back our profession. Brandy, the disaster lawyer, joins us to discuss these challenges and provide some critical insight into how we can start this process and why it's important to finally put your efforts into addressing DEI in emergency management. Hint: It's important because we are humanitarians and if that doesn't motivate you like it should, it's also a massive legal and financial liability and a failure to live up to your duty to protect your community.Support our podcast!EM Weekly shirts and merch: https://www.thereadinesslab.com/shop/merchThe Readiness Lab: https://www.thereadinesslab.com/Doberman Emergency Management: www.dobermanemg.com
I'm going to start 2023 by trying to break apart a paradigm, emergency managers shall not respond to a scene. This rule exists in emergency management for reasons unknown however, we are not tethered to a desk. There, I said it. Stand up, stretch your legs, and walk out the nearest door. Boom, step one is done. Now go do stuff. I also talk about how small shops can grow and all emergency managers can take advantage of learning how to talk to people and spice up your reports with some graphic design flare. It's been a couple of weeks since our last episode and it's because of good things. First was Thanksgiving, which I hope everyone enjoyed and shoutout to all those who had to work and keep watch while so many were off. We appreciate you! The second week was because we were at our second Dynamic Populations training event in Orlando, FL. This was a challenging event to pull off, complicated by some logistical issues outside of our control, and a lesson in not giving up. John and I discuss what went well, what was new and different, and how strong the headwinds were leading up to the event.

It's the question that I am asked daily, how do I get into emergency management. Well, I try to answer it by sharing my path and the lessons that I learned along the way. Today I am joined by Eric Kant to discuss the future of emergency management and public safety. We're talking AI, digital twins, virtual reality, blockchain, and all sorts of other technologies. We challenge the status quo and introduce things that emergency managers can introduce today to make their jobs easier and do more with data. We also talk about Hurricane Ian and how to use technology such as lidar to help with cataloging damage and mapping the extent of the disaster. Eric is a resident of Florida and is seeing the impacts of Ian in his town.If you're using tech in your preparedness, response, recovery, or mitigation efforts, we want to hear about it. Let us know in the comments what you're using and how it's working!References: https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/fc8d084169114eb998055c6ed422745f/https://spike.ikegps.com/https://shop.leica-geosystems.com/leica-blk/abouthttps://aecmag.com/reality-capture-modelling/sitescape-lidar-scanning-on-the-iphone-ipad/Doberman Emergency Management owns and operates the Disaster Tough Podcast. Consistent with past practice, Urban Areas began a collaborative process to establish All-Hazards Incident Management Teams (AHIMT) . Today we are taking a deep dive into the AHIMT process and seeks to identify challenges and obstacles to collaboration with FDNY BC Rich DePrima. There is minimal agreement about how much collaboration has taken place in developing the AHIMT programs. The benefits of collaboration are believed to include the sharing of resources, developing positive relationships with other agencies, reducing operational costs, and providing a common framework for identifying and solving problems. These findings support the following recommendations for using collaboration in regional initiatives: an overall program strategy document that addresses the need for and commitment to collaboration, governance, personnel, competency, remaining relevant, and an exercise schedule.LinksWeb - https://www.ahimta.org/Twitter - https://twitter.com/fdnyimt?lang=enFacebook -https://www.facebook.com/.../today-the.../572038263528723/LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/in/richard-deprima-072668162/Todd De VoeWebsite - https://toddtdevoe.com/Website- www.crisis-cafe.comSpeak N Spark-https://bit.ly/3sTVUfrLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3sVHL1gEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdSister ShowsEM Student Web -https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdThe Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGSponsors Outer Limit Supply https://bit.ly/2FR26Bp Coupon Code “EMWEEKLY” Power Up- https://www.powerupconnect.com/Mid-Atlantic Center for Emergency Management- https://macem.org/Home.aspx
With remote work more popular than ever, it's important to consider the unique ways that emergencies and disasters may affect these employees. Employees who work from home should be sure to have a plan to deal with common emergencies and disasters. Technology can also help when it comes to emergency preparedness by enabling employees to connect to the internet, access important files and documents, and maintain a clear line of communication. Remote work during an emergency or disaster will indeed be much different than remote work during normal times — there may be additional challenges and stressors that require different solutions than normal. In the aftermath of a disaster, it's important to be flexible, understanding, and take your employees' needs into account.Rodrigo Nieto GómezWeb -https://nps.edu/web/nsa/faculty/-/asset_publisher/eHb4tK5KXorI/content/rodtrigo-nieto-gomez-ph-d-Twitter - https://twitter.com/rodrigonietoFacebook -https://www.facebook.com/rodrigonietogomezLinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/in/rodrigonietogomez/YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC04pcvAgqE5xh8X6lOIC3zATodd De VoeWebsite - https://toddtdevoe.com/Website- www.crisis-cafe.comSpeak N Spark-https://bit.ly/3sTVUfrLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3sVHL1gEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdSister ShowsEM Student Web -https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdThe Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGSponsors Outer Limit Supply https://bit.ly/2FR26Bp Coupon Code “EMWEEKLY” Power Up- https://www.powerupconnect.com/Mid-Atlantic Center for Emergency Management- https://macem.org/Home.aspxIf you would like to become a sponsor or advertiser Call Sitch Radio (714) 643-2500 X 1
