Are you interested in data-driven local sustainable development? Summary of the article titled Lessons from nine urban areas using data to drive local sustainable development from 2022 by Garima Jain and Jessica Espey, published in Nature Urban Sustainability journal. This is a great preparation to our next interview with Dr Haydn Reed in episode 260 talking about urban data use for better urban outcomes. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see how data-driven urban governance can help cities in their sustainability journey. This article presents the data use opportunities despite its challenges of data availability or capacity, among others. As the most important things, I would like to highlight 3 aspects: Making data accessible and engaging through various communication methods is essential for transparency and effective decision-making, though it requires overcoming significant technical and legal barriers. Using data to adapt the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to local priorities is crucial for fostering political buy-in and effective governance, as demonstrated by cities like Patiala and New York City. Integrating local data with national monitoring systems is difficult due to varying resources and methodologies, but cities like those in Colombia and Brazil have developed innovative frameworks to address these challenges. You can find article through this link. Abstract: Cities are central to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, yet many remain disengaged from the process. This paper examines nine city and subnational pilot projects conducted between 2015 and 2019, to assess the role of a data-based approach to governance in improving decision-making for sustainable development. We consider to what extent a data-based approach to governance can help cities in (a) localizing the sustainable development goals (SDGs); (b) integrating national and local datasets; (c) increasing openness of data and enabling better accountability for outcomes; and (d) encouraging innovation in data gathering. We find that data is considered a useful entry point for local sustainable development conversations and employing a focus on data management is welcomed by nearly all local governments, however, few localities explicitly focus on data to improve their sustainable development outcomes. Critically, despite the excitement around big data, most cities are unable to access them due to capacity challenges, data ownership, and privacy concerns. They often cover just a few square meters of urban space, and now they're growing across Australia to cool neighborhoods down on hot days. “Tiny forests,” as they are called, also mature in 10 to 20 years, rather than the usual 100 years, because of the way they're generated. And that could be a big benefit for Australia's suburbs. A school in Perth is busy creating a tiny forest. “I love it the most because I love animals and nature,” says one student. This particular type of forest can be planted in the tiniest of spaces, such as a car parking spot, a tennis court, or even a strip of land next to a street. The students are being guided by Grey Coupland and they're using the Miyawaki method to plant the forest. The method follows three central ideas. “It's planting locally native species that are specifically adapted to the area in which you are planting them, the soil remediation, and the high-density planting,” explains Coupland. Another advantage is that these forests take very little time to grow and help cool urban areas. And, once they're planted, the forests also become part of the school curriculum, which has benefits for the students. “The more they are immersed in nature, the more they care about it,” says teacher Cymbie Burgoyne. “The children who participate in this program, some have never played in the dirt before, some had never planted a plant before,” says Coupland. The project will also compare the health and well-being of students who take care of the forest, compared to students that don't. “We want to re-engage children with nature,” says Coupland. “We've got children on one end of the spectrum who are really worried about the climate crisis and feel they can't do anything about it. At the other end of the spectrum, we've got kids who are just on their iPads and their screens and totally disengaged.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Much has been said about increasing prevalence of game-farm genes in mallard populations, but evidence has been scarce on whether these genes produce differences in behavior and demography…until now. Pivotal research by Dr. Ben Luukkonen reveals that game-farm hybrids differ from wild mallards in their movements, migration, habitat use, and nest incubation. The conclusion? Game-farm hybrids are different, and not in a good way. In this episode, Dr. Luukkonen and Dr. John Coluccy share details of these results and much more. What are harvest rates of Great Lakes mallards, and what role has hunting played in the decline, if any? Could the loss of over 3 million acres of CRP from this landscape be partly to blame? And how do these results affect our conservation efforts?www.ducks.org/DUPodcast

Great Lakes mallards are an important source of locally harvest for hunters in the region, but their population has declined by nearly 60% since 1997. Recently completed research sponsored by Ducks Unlimited and a host of other partners provides insights into the potential causes. In the first of this 2-part discussion, Dr. Ben Luukkonen, imminent PhD graduate from Michigan State University, and Dr. John Coluccy, DU's director of conservation planning and science for the Great Lakes and Atlantic Region, introduce the background for this research and highlight the questions it explored, ranging from changes in survival to influence of game-farm genetics. www.ducks.org/DUPodcast

Our guest on this week's episode is Breanna Herbert, senior product manager at Orbis Corp. One way that companies can meet their sustainability goals is to transform the way they package goods. That's where reusable packaging can help to create greener supply chains. Our guest offers some insights and also shares about packaging products that are made from recycled materials gathered from shorelines of the world's oceans. We have all seen those Amazon or UPS trucks pull right up outside our driveways and watch a delivery driver carry a single box to our doorstep to make a delivery. But that type of delivery is not practical in urban areas where the trucks cannot easily navigate. Instead, they often use e-bikes in cities, but that can also present some problems. We discuss some ways that New York City is utilizing technology to make bike-based deliveries more practical.Shippers are turning to logistics services providers more and more in the wake of the pandemic economy to get a better handle on costs and improve their supply chain operations. Clare County Council is being called upon to adopt Inland Fisheries Ireland guidelines on flood defences. If implemented, this would see a nature based buffer zone of 33 metres installed at riparian corridors alongside urban areas, thereby preventing other development in a flood risk area. In response the local authority confirmed its intention to commit to further measures such as working with farmers to plant trees along the Inagh River Catchment. Former Mayor of Ennis and Fine Gael Councillor Johnny Flynn says its vital to protect vulnerable communities.
The Bishop of Killaloe believes big urban areas in this diocese may have to rely more on lay people to preside over funerals down the line, due to ongoing priest shortages. It follows the introduction this week in the Catholic Diocese of Clogher of lay funeral ministers, who will be able to lead the liturgy when a coffin arrives at the church, along with the rite of committal at the graveside. This has been in place in the Diocese of Killaloe since 2000, when the shortage of priests was beginning to become more acute, with the situation having since intensified. Twenty-four new Ministers have been trained in recent times, half of those in the area of pastoral care and Bishop Fintan Monahan says the intention is to intensify training so that lay people can help more with rituals.
Charlie Koenen, once thriving in the computer business, found himself drawn into a different world—the world of bees. Transitioning from tech to agriculture, Koenen has gained a passion for bees and being an advocate for pollinator awareness. Driven by a quest to change traditional beekeeping methods, Koenen delved into industrial design to reinvent beehives. After nine years of innovation, he unveiled a new design—a horizontal hive—aimed at reducing the hive's weight and disruption to the bees' habitat. His unique approach to beekeeping extends beyond personal interest. Koenen has placed hives in unconventional locations across Milwaukee, such as nursing homes, schools, and community hubs, challenging the stereotype of beekeeping in urban spaces.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
