The independent investigation into allegations of racism at Hawthorn might have concluded, but there's still a sense of unfinished business. While the AFL reported no adverse findings against Alastair Clarkson, Chris Fagan or Jason Burt, they did suggest Hawthorn will be investigated in a new process. Given Clarkson and Fagan weren't formally interviewed and some of the original complainants didn't participate at all, there is still much to play out. Today we unpack the findings and ask what comes next. Featured: Paul Kennedy, journalist, ABC Sport. Featured: Paul Kennedy, journalist, ABC Sport. Subscribe to the ABC Sport Newsletter

Episode 37. Grandson strives to honor his Grandfather and the 746th Far East Army Air Force Band and secure a Best Historical Album Grammy award in 2022 Hark back to the era of the big band, jazz and swing music and the names Glenn Miller, Vaughan Monroe, Dizzie Gillespie, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Louis Armstrong come to mind. Lost among those sounds are the World War II bands that went to war. Many of those 500 military bands accompanied combat units and performed concerts close to the front lines. The 746th Far East Army Air Force Band performed in the Philippines. After Japan surrendered and the soldiers were preparing to head home, they had the opportunity to record in their tent, in the jungles outside Manila, an afternoon performance of original arrangements of popular jazz tunes, thus creating the only known album by a frontline band unit. Our guest today is historian Jason Burt, grandson of Corporal Richard Burt, the band's lead trumpeter. The younger Burt has worked with Grammy-winning sound engineers to remaster and digitize the band's 1945 performance. His goal is to honor all who served in World War II as he strives to secure a Best Historical Album Grammy in 2022. During World War II, while weapons, ammunition, ships, planes, tanks, etc, were always a big focus, theatre commanders also understood the value of troop morale and went to great lengths to secure things like Coca-Cola, or ice cream, or beer, movies, or music for their troops – even in the most far flung areas of the war. Music was a particularly satisfying treat – and military bands were a big part of this. Many of these bands played shows for the troops very close to the front lines. The 746th FEAF Band was one such band and an album they recorded in 1945 is up for a 2021 Grammy. To discuss the 746th FEAF Band, we sat down with Jason Burt, a historian and history teacher, and the man behind the effort to see a group of World War II veterans honored with one of music's biggest awards.

Jason Burt is a historian and teacher from West Sacramento, California. His grandfather, Richard Burt, was the lead trumpet player of the 746th Far East Air Force Band that was stationed in the Philippines, during World War II. From Leyte to Luzon, they played music for service members, civilians, generals, and dignitaries - at times, right on the front line with fighting going on directly behind them. But one of the most unique things they did was to record the only known full-length album by a Front Line band unit during World War II and it was created in their performance tent with limited equipment.Jason worked with sound engineers at Lurssen Mastering, who have 5 GRAMMY awards between them and the original album was digitalized, cleaned up and mastered. It's a fascinating story with an inside glimpse of a time long past.
