In this gripping episode, true crime meets catastrophic disaster. We're also visiting Portland's sister city established in 1983 – Guadalajara, Mexico. We're diving deep into one of the most haunting tragedies in Mexico's history: the devastating series of explosions that rocked Guadalajara on April 22, 1992. Joining us is Cristina, one of our pod besties, who brings her unique perspective and special connection to the city as we unravel the events that led to this shocking disaster. Check out both of her amazing shows Espooky Tales and A Little Bit de Todo. We'll take you on a journey through the capital city and the expansive, bustling San Juan de Dios Market. Come along to experience some of the rich history and cultural traditions of the Jalisco region, famously the birthplace of both mariachi and tequila. We'll also share the harrowing details of how a dangerous mix of gas leaks, governmental negligence, and flawed infrastructure led to catastrophic explosions that killed hundreds, injured thousands, and left entire neighborhoods in ruins. This story is more than just a tragic event—it's a cautionary tale about the dangers of negligence, corruption, and the catastrophic consequences of ignoring early warning signs. True crime fans will appreciate the meticulous research, while those fascinated by disasters and unsolved mysteries will be drawn into the web of unanswered questions surrounding this tragedy.

Its twelve stories center ordinary people—Latine, queer, working class-as they wield supernatural powers against oppression, loneliness, and dread. A young queer man finds love at a magical clothing shop—and the courage to stand up to the homophobic cops. A witch who makes custom nightmares wonders why all her victims are connected to the Black Panthers—and who she's really working for. A soon-to-be father encounters a mysterious hitchhiker who tries pulling him back to the days of his violent past. A brand-new vampire, freshly hired at the blood bank, delights in her heightened sexual desire and superhuman strength.Get the Nightmare Box here: https://www.cursedmorselspress.com/product/the-nightmare-box-and-other-stories-paperback-pre-order-releases-july-9th-/23?cs=true&cst=custom Follow Cynthia Gomez and her work on her website: https://cynthiasaysboo.wordpress.com/It's a book club episode! Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia blends together Mexican horror movies and dark occultism. We follow Montserrat, who has always been overlooked. She's a talented sound editor, but she's left out of the boys' club running the film industry in '90s Mexico City. And she's all but invisible to her best friend Tristán, a charming if faded soap opera star, even though she's been in love with him since childhood. Then Tristán discovers his new neighbor is the cult horror director Abel Urueta, and he has a way to change their lives - even if his tales of a Nazi occultist imbuing magic into highly volatile silver nitrate stock sounds like sheer fantasy. The magic film was never finished, which is why, Urueta swears, his career vanished overnight. He is cursed. Now the director wants Montserrat and Tristán to help him shoot the missing scene and lift the curse . . . but Montserrat soon notices a dark presence following her.MJ talks about the occult history that is mentioned in the book, Carmen recaps the book and then they all go through diiscussion questions.Join the Espooky Tales Book Club for Busy People: https://substack.com/@espooky?utm_source=profile-page Listen to Carmen and Cristina's other podcast Historias Unknown The next book club read is Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Canas, if you want to purchase the book, check out the Espooky Tales bookshop link https://bookshop.org/lists/espooky-book-club-listIf you have a spooky story to share, email Espookytales@gmail.com or leave us a voicemail at the Espooky Hot Line (360)836-4486.
