The Perils of Beginnings weaves two periods of history to tell the story of an ancestor, José Narciso Cavazos, one of the early Texas settlers. In 1969, 18-year-old Barbara, the narrator, hopped into her spicy Auntie Eloisa's new GTO to embark on a road trip from Texas to Tampico, Mexico. While searching for her baptismal certificate, Auntie shares the history of Narcisco, a bold visionary who, in 1793, left an aristocratic life in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, to cultivate the 600,000 acres of land awarded to him by the King of Spain. As Narciso's story unfolds, so do the secrets of the two women. Barbara's humorous and warm tales told of a cow greeting her while using an outdoor toilet, Auntie dropping her bloomers while dancing with abandon to the mariachis' music, and a “gentle” horse baring her teeth before riding her into the river. The Perils of Beginnings has something for everyone; history, romance, and colorful characters.
MCALLEN, Texas - Dante Galeazzi, president and CEO of the Texas International Produce Association (TIPA), worries that some of the smaller RGV cities will have their water supply rationed just like it was in Monterrey and Reynosa. And it will be for the same reason - because water that should be coming to South Texas and Tamaulipas under a 1944 international water sharing treaty is being held back by the state of Chihuahua. Galeazzi spoke in depth about the Valley's current water supply crisis when he appeared on panel at UT-Rio Grande Valley's Vistas from Texas seminar in October. It was held at UTRGV's corporate headquarters inside the Rio Bank HQ in McAllen. “The water shortage is not only impacting the Rio Grande Valley, but also dramatically impacting our friends in Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon,” Galeazzi. “Look at what happened in Monterrey, Mexico, and Reynosa, Mexico, just these last two summers. They have been on severe water restrictions. It has been so bad that Reynosa this year shut off water to 260 different communities, and they basically put them on water schedules. I think was every third day that you got water, or every second day, something like that.” Galeazzi continued: “And so what was happening was, people had scheduled days they could get water. Both in Monterrey and Reynosa. You had to be ready on time, on your day, with buckets, or both days, to fill your bathtub and fill up enough water for three days for your family. That's what could happen here in the U.S. That's what's going to happen in those little cities if we don't invest in what's happening in water.” Galeazzi said there are a lot of water projects in the works in the Valley but many of them are focused on conservation. “We need to be looking at new water development. This is important. A lot of our smaller communities in our irrigation districts, specifically small towns, etc., are unable to access federal monies for water projects because it requires a 50 percent cost share,” Galeazzi said. “Our communities are not holding on to stockpiles of millions of dollars for projects.”Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service website to read the full story.Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

Te atreves a escucharla a solas? Eres capaz de oírlo con auriculares? These regions are key transit routes for drug trafficking into the United States.Rivalries:The cartel has faced intense competition and conflicts with other criminal organizations, including the Gulf Cartel, the Sinaloa Cartel, and rival factions within its own ranks. These rivalries have often resulted in violent confrontations.Government Responses:The Mexican government, in coordination with the military and law enforcement agencies, has initiated various operations to combat the North East Cartel. However, these efforts have often resulted in increased violence and instability in the region.Evolution:The North East Cartel has evolved over the years, adapting to law enforcement strategies and rival threats. It has undergone splits and mergers, making it difficult to pinpoint a single, stable organizational structure.Impact:The cartel's activities have contributed to the overall violence and instability in northeastern Mexico, posing significant challenges to local authorities and causing harm to civilians caught in the crossfire. In summary, the North East Cartel, also known as Cartel del Noreste or Los Zetas, is a powerful criminal organization operating in northeastern Mexico. Our mission in life is to find your gift.
The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
Thursday is for troublemakers, the ones that wear their sunglasses inside. We are talking about Kia and Hyundai making EV building plans in Mexico, used car demand despite slowing CPO sales, and how Gmail plans to say goodbye to your old spam account that is collecting dust. The Inflation Reduction Act is providing the impetus for Kia and Hyundai to invest a billion dollars in production in Mexico. The Governor of New Nuevo León, Mexico, Samuel Garcia, revealed Kia's plans on his Twitter this week, initially saying Kia once again bets on Nuevo Leon with a “billion dollar investment to expand its plant and produce two Kia car models” later editing out the billion. The IRA makes it so that many of the automaker's models no longer qualify for the $7500 tax credit. This move, along with plans already in place for Georgia, make it possible for Hyundai Motor Group to continue their growth in EV production and sales.Used car demand remains strong, despite caution from retailers on a waning shopper presence in the market.Morgan Automotive, a 60 store group in Florida, noted that same store used volume was up in January and February.Cox Automotive's Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index — a measurement of wholesale used-vehicle prices calculated by tracking vehicles sold at Manheim's U.S. auctions and applying statistical analysis to those figures — recorded four consecutive months of increases from December to March.April saw a downturn in CPO sales volume, but Q1 sales have kept the YOY numbers up 6%, according to Cox Automotive.“April CPO sales took it on the chin compared to March, but the pace was healthier than either January or February,” said Chris Frey, senior manager of Economic and Industry Insights at Cox Automotive.Google is cracking down on storage as they look to remove old accounts from Gmail as early as December of this year. The news comes over 2 years after Google removed unlimited storage from Google PhotosDeleted emails will not be available for use. When the new policy starts, product manager Ruth Kricheli says the company will start with accounts that were created and never touched again and also send “multiple notifications over the months leading up to deletion” to the address and any attached recovery email.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
Tony Diaz spotlights the upcoming event “Encuentro: The Native American Roots of Texas Mexican Food.” Several food scholars explore the culinary scene with chefs and writers, and sometimes, both! Victoria Elizondo is chef owner of Cochinita Co. in Houston where she insists that fresh and preferably local ingredients are key to her vibrant and flavorful Mexican food. At her restaurant in the Greater East End, Cochinita co., she usually has sever al dishes featuring the ancient food that is native to Texas for thousands of years: nopalitos. When she was 12, Elizondo left her native Nuevo Leon, south of the Texas Mexican border, with her mother to move to the United States, where she became a DACA recipient. Following in her mother's footsteps, she got her first job at 16 as a restaurant hostess. During her career she has worked at top Houston restaurants like State of Grace, Pax Americana and Xochi. In 2016 she started her own business venture, Cochinita Co., initially a food truck concept that pivoted to a pop up and catering model, now a small restaurant that is receiving high honors. The Houston Chronicle named Cochinita Co. one of the top 25 Best Restaurants of 2022. This year, Elizondo is nominated for the prestigious national Emerging Chef James Beard Award. Chef Joseph Gomez, is honoring his roots through his new food truck Con Todo, focusing on comida frontera (Spanish for “border town food”). The Rio Grande Valley native debuted the truck in 2021 at Celis Brewery's new beer garden in North Austin. Gomez who's worked at Austin restaurants such as Be More Pacific, Tha i Kun, She's Not Here, and Easy Tiger sees the truck as showcasing the foods and stories of the Rio Grande Valley and his family. It's through the menu that he wants to jump start “a long conversation about Mexican food in south Texas,” and what it truly is. Eater named Con Todo one of America's 15 best new restaurants of 2022. Lilliana Patricia Saldaña is an Associate Professor of Mexican American Studies (MAS) at UTSA and is co-director of the UTSA MAS Teachers' Academy. Her activist scholarship draws from Chicana/x studies, decolonial and anti-colonial studies, Indigenous epistemologies, and Chicana/Latina feminisms to investigate teacher identity and consciousness, and decolonial practices in schools and community spaces. She's published in nationally recognized journals, including Latinos & Education, Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education & Society, and Association of Mexican American Educators Journal, and has published in various edited volumes. When she's not teaching or researching, she's learning about Mexican and Indigenous foodways, facilitating gastronomy workshops, and tending to her kitchen garden. Adán Medrano is a Chef, Food Writer and Filmmaker. Author of “Truly Texas Mexican: A Native Culinary Heritage In Recipes” – Book Of The Year Finalist by Foreword Reviews. His most recent book, Don't Count the Tortillas – The Art of Texas Mexican Cooking, is reviewed and listed by “Spruce Eats” in “The 8 Best Mexican cookbooks to read in 2021.” Both history/cookbooks are academically peer-reviewed and published by Texas Tech University Press. Adán Medrano is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. His professional work in restaurant kitchens includes fine dining at “Restaurant Ten Bogaerde” in Belgium, and volunteering as the Chef of Houston's Casa Juan Diego, a shelter for homeless persons.
