Retired FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong explores the case of Goidsargi Estibaliz Carranza Zabala, also known as the “Ice Cream Killer.” To the outside world, she was just a friendly ice cream shop owner in Vienna. But behind the counter, Carranza was living a lie. Between 2008 and 2010, she murdered both her ex-husband and her boyfriend, hiding their remains in the basement freezer beneath the shop. Candice explores the psychological unraveling that led to these calculated killings, and how Carranza's soft-spoken demeanor masked a capacity for cold-blooded violence.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! On his first day in office Donald Trump issued a slew of executive orders to address what he called “an unprecedented flood” of immigration. Terminating birthright citizenship, a right enshrined in the Constitution, declaring a national emergency at the border and seeking funds to build a border wall are just some of Trump's directives. Many of his orders faced immediate opposition: as of Tuesday, 18 states and two cities had filed lawsuits attacking the legality of the birthright citizenship order. We talk about Trump's early moves on immigration and how they are impacting immigrants and their families. Guests: Salvador Rivera, correspondent based in San Diego, BorderReport.com Deep Gulasekaram, professor of law and director of Byron White Center for the Study of Constitutional Law, University of Colorado Boulder Law School. In Genesis 4:7, God questions Cain, asking him if he will not be accepted if he does well. This implies that Cain has a choice to make better decisions and encourages him to overcome sin, which is described as lurking at his door, seeking to dominate him. When I was a teenager, I remember opening an issue of SURFER magazine and reading an article about a Mexican pro surfer who, at the peak of his career, walked away from it all and moved to Finland. Finland! I didn't know Kalle Carranza then, but the rarity of his story was memorable. Once the ocean grabs us, it rarely lets go. So why oh why, I wondered for years, did Carranza trade boardshorts for beanies and start from scratch? If you listen to this podcast often, you've probably heard me rail on about the problems with social media. I view it as a kind of psychological cement, hardening our identities and slowly turning us into one-dimensional versions of ourselves. (The result is a lot of 44-year-olds who still act like they're 24.) The more we are willing to try new things and look like fools, the more interesting life becomes. And Carranza is one interesting dude. So, when I was in Costa Rica this past month and finally met Kalle Carranza, I sat down with him to hear his story in its entirety: First Mexican to be on the cover of SURFER magazine, sober, and now, after a life of travel, is back in his hometown of Sayulita, Mexico with a wife and kids. If you dig this podcast, will you please leave a short review on Apple Podcasts? It takes less than 60 seconds and makes a difference when I drop to my knees and beg hard-to-get guests on the show. I read them all. You can join my newsletter on Substack. It's glorious. Get full access to Kyle Thiermann at thiermann.substack.com/subscribe
