Great Tape: Off to the Races

Today we have a special program — the first issue of Great Tape, an audio magazine from KZMU News. We're telling personal stories of the West and providing audio snapshots of what it's like to live and work here — all in the creative spirit of an alternative weekly (except it won't be weekly, at least not yet). Every show will have a different theme which we'll explore in a bunch of ways. And our first theme is “Off to the Races.” In this episode we jump from one daily race to another in Moab — following a baker, newspaper editor, delivery man and nursing-home resident. We also have stories about political races, the race to exterminate an invasive plant and the race to put goods on our shelves. And we have fiction and music! We have a radio drama about Moab's only Uber driver, an excerpt from a book about discovering the West and a song about deep time and the imperceptible natural rhythms of our environment. Contributors were Marlow Mewborn, Emily Arnsten, Veronica Verdin, Lauren Carmona, Brian Laidlaw and The Family Trade. Featured interviews include John Schwoger, Curt Brewer, Jamison Wiggins, Doug McMurdo, Randall Lewis, Liz Ballenger, Kya Marienfeld, Izzi Weimholt, AJ Long, Victor Beltran, Raymond Munson, Joel Swett and Marge Logan. Original art was created by Veronica Verdin. See detailed show notes here: https://www.kzmu.org/great-tape-off-to-the-races/

She is a social psychologist interested in the biology of decision-making.Her areas of expertise include women's consumer choice and luxury spending, family consumer decisions, hormones and behavior, and the psychological consequences of ambiguity. In this episode, we talk about the complicated trade-off women many times have to make between family and career in modern industrialized societies. We talk about the role of fathers and arranged marriages in our evolutionary history. We question if women really have an impulse to want children. We discuss gender norms and the sexual division of labor, and the negative impacts they might have. We get into the trade-off between career and family, and how modern societies lack incentives and opportunities for women to invest in both. We talk about the negative effects the pandemic had on families and careers. Finally, we discuss how evolutionary psychology can help women deal with this trade-off. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, PER HELGE LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, HERBERT GINTIS, RUTGER VOS, RICARDO VLADIMIRO, CRAIG HEALY, OLAF ALEX, PHILIP KURIAN, JONATHAN VISSER, JAKOB KLINKBY, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, PAULINA BARREN, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ARTHUR KOH, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, SUSAN PINKER, PABLO SANTURBANO, SIMON COLUMBUS, PHIL KAVANAGH, JORGE ESPINHA, CORY CLARK, MARK BLYTH, ROBERTO INGUANZO, MIKKEL STORMYR, ERIC NEURMANN, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, BERNARD HUGUENEY, ALEXANDER DANNBAUER, FERGAL CUSSEN, YEVHEN BODRENKO, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, DON ROSS, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, OZLEM BULUT, NATHAN NGUYEN, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, J.W., JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, IDAN SOLON, ROMAIN ROCH, DMITRY GRIGORYEV, TOM ROTH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, AL ORTIZ, NELLEKE BAK, KATHRINE AND PATRICK TOBIN, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, NICK GOLDEN, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS P. He then traveled north a few hours to Los Angeles where he became a commercial diver and then earned a job topside as one of the Superintendents to a private stevedore firm at the ports of Los Angeles. There he learned about supply chain management, logistics, and global relationships to eventually have the skill set needed to start The Syndgar Trading Co. The biggest turning point his life in his words: When I lost my corporate job. I was 34 but closer to 35 possessed an MBA and various business certifications. I was too old and too educated to start at the bottom and not well known to be back in the top layers. They begin with a moving memoir from UK creator Katie Green, Lighter Than My Shadow (Roar-Lion Forge). In this work, Green reveals the eating disorders she struggled with as a young girl and into adulthood. Growing up obsessive-compulsive, Green chronicles how this condition contributed to her anorexic behavior, later evolving into problems with binging. Green also narrates her many attempts to address these problems with various doctors and therapists, the most notorious of whom ends up sexually abusing her...providing even more obstacles to her recovery. The guys are impressed by Green's honesty and storytelling abilities -- particularly taken by her art and the visual metaphors she employs throughout -- although toward the end of their conversation about this title, they wonder if perhaps the memoir could have been streamlined just a little. This is a 500+ page text, after all. Next, the Two Guys look at a brand new anthology from Fantagraphics, Now #1. Edited by Eric Reynolds, this collection of diverse and experimental comic art brings to mind Fantagraphics previous anthology, Mome (which both Derek and Paul dearly miss). In fact, the guys begin their discussion of Now by referencing the earlier anthology, with Paul feeling that the latest efforts are more experimental than Mome, while Derek see it as more similar to the previous series. The only difference is number of new and/or unfamiliar creators in Now (and, Derek argues, such was also the case several years ago with Mome). Some of the standouts in this first issue of Now are Dash Shaw's "Scorpio," Gabrielle Bell's "Dear Naked Guy...," Sammy Harkham's "I, Marlon," Malachi Ward and Matt Sheean's "Widening Horizon," and especially Noah Van Sciver's "Wall of Shame" (for Derek, the best of the collection). But the guys are also impressed, and at times curiously confused, by the contributions from creators that are new to them, such as Sara Corbett, J.C. Menu, Antoine Cossé, and Kaela Graham. But as Paul and Derek argue, the entire issue of Now is compelling and works successfully as an anthology. They can't wait until the second issue, due for release in January. Finally, the Two Guys wrap up with a discussion of Justin Jordan, Nikki Ryan, and Morgan Beem's The Family Trade #1 (Image Comics). This is another example of the kind of world-building often found at Image, and it's the story of a neutral territory in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the Float, ruled by the descendants of the ship captains that originally founded the realm -- called the Clans -- and the Family, descendants of the hands who had worked for the captains. This first issue opens with the protagonist, Jessa Wynn, attempting to assassinate Stagger Berghardt, a Trump-like charismatic demagogue who appeals to the base instincts of the citizens of the Float. She bungles the assassination, but her efforts put into motion a series of encounters that will propel the narrative into the next issues. Both Derek and Paul are impressed by this first issue, especially Beem's art, and both plan on remaining on board for the rest of the series.

It's another busy week at the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! Let's cut out the jibber-jabber and get right into the podcast, OK? First up is John's interview with artist Morgan Beem, whose work you will see next week with the release of The Family Trade #1 by Image Comics. The guys got to meet Morgan at Rose City Comic Con last month and fell in love with her artwork. John interviewed Morgan before she took off for New York Comic Con, which is going on right now! Look for The Family Trade on shelves next Wednesday.  Next up, John bravely took one for the team and watched Marvel's Inhumans, Gifted, and the first three episodes of Star Trek: Discovery. Listen in to figure out which ones he liked or didn't like, and what he is most likely to keep tuning in for this season.  Then all three guys discuss Marvel Legacy #1, which came out last week. This is a giant-size issue kicking off the next big thing from Marvel Comics. We see the first incarnation of the Avengers, from the dawn of humankind. We get teases to Wakanda in space, the Kingpin as Mayor of New York City, and the long overdue return of the Fantastic Four. We run through some of the upcoming titles launching out of Legacy to see which ones intrigue us and which ones we may wait to see in the quarter bins at a future show.  We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or by email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. Christopher recalls his experience at Baltimore Comic Con 2017: who he met, panels attended, comcs bought and ale drank! But, since this is Creator Talks, there is an interview with Mark Waid from the con on his return to Captain American and his future plans for The Avengers. The episode wraps up with writers Justin Jordon & Nicki Ryan talking about their new title The Family Trade being published by Image Comics in October.  And cats. We talk about cats.

This week... Mind Grapes: Very librarian. Much books. Wow. Literacy. Both Sam and Alli were feeling very bookish, so we share our thoughts on The Family Trade by Charles Stross, Redshirts by John Scalzi, The Book of Strange New Things by Michael Faber, and The Farm by Tom Rob Smith. We also talk about how we probably will go see The Martian, even though Matt Damon has been talking out of his butt lately. However, we also discuss some frustration with the idea that ALL BOOKS ARE NOW BECOMING MOVIES. Watch us turn into cranky old women before your very eyes! Class Z(ed): We've both been lucky (mostly) to be attending some recent professional development workshops meant to help us out with our teaching. Alli discusses the Instructional Skills Workshop, a 3-day whirlwind meant to hone teaching skills, learn new techniques, and test out new ideas. Sam has been partnering with the UBC Learning Exchange to get some tips and tricks about teaching adult communities. Bonus: hear a rant about a not so great workshop about intercultural communication.
