Eisner Award nominated comics writer Tate Brombal (Barbalien: Red Planet) returns to the show today to chat with me about his new DC Comics Elseworlds seven issue mini-series Green Lantern Dark. Last June Tate was a guest during our Pride Month coverage where he introduced the world to the Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos which he is co-writing with James Tynion, a LGBTQ+ horror-hero coming-of-age series reintroducing us to the classic Universal Monsters creatures through a distinctly queer lens, now on its twelfth issue. We get into his own introduction to the Elseworlds Imprint through his uncle, how new Lantern Rina Mori was developed as a character, and how a chance dinner conversation created the unlikely creative partnership with artist Werther Dell'Edera. It's also been announced that he's taking on the role of writing the new Batgirl series resurrecting Cassandra Cain for her first ongoing solo series in decades with veteran artist Takeshi Miyazawa. I get to hear all about Tate's research for the book that involves watching Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and other martial arts movies to refresh his skills on scripting fight scenes and how the nucleus of the book will be focused on the relationship between Cassandra and Lady Shiva. At the end, Tate clues me in to one of the best deep dive book options for writer Mary Shelley research and we catch up on where things are with the Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos. Find Tate on X and Instagram Green Lantern Dark from the publisher On a post-apocalyptic Earth overrun by monsters, the battle between good and evil ended long ago--and evil won. Now darkness prevails as humanity struggles to survive in the corrupted wasteland that remains. Only one hero is said to haunt what's left of our shadowed cities, the one who wields the mystical green flame that could return light to a dark world--The Green Lantern. But she's been missing for years, and on the isolated island of New England, Solomon Grundy's undead army only grows larger and more powerful every night... Celebrated horror artist of smash hit Something is Killing the Children Werther Dell'Edera teams with rising-star writer Tate Brombal (House of Slaughter) to bring you a chilling tale of desperation, hope, and resurrection from the bitter remains of the fan-favorite Tangent Universe! Batgirl from the publisher Hold on to your seats, clutch your pearls, and rejoice in celebration because on November 6, Cassandra Cain is taking center stage in her first solo Batgirl series in nearly two decades, courtesy of writer Tate Brombal (Green Lantern Dark, House of Slaughter) and artist Takeshi Miyazawa (Ms. Marvel, Mech Cadet Yu). When a deadly group of assassins shows up to kill Cassandra Cain, Lady Shiva must come to the rescue, and they're forced to put their complicated past aside and work together as mother and daughter to ensure they make it out alive. Unfortunately, things are never as easy as they seem, and Batgirl must embark on a jaw-dropping, martial-arts filled adventure in her quest for truth and justice…and revenge?! This is a Batgirl unlike any other so don't miss the opportunity to dive into the psyche of one of Gotham City's deadliest fighters, while exploring her deep and complex relationship with her mother. Writer Ed Brisson (OLD MAN LOGAN, CABLE) and artist Pepe Larraz (UNCANNY AVENGERS, AVENGERS: NO SURRENDER) answer the biggest question of all: can the fate of the X-Men be changed?                         (Rebekah's Pick) Crowded from IMAGE COMICS written by Christopher Sebela with art by Ro Stein & Ted Brandt colors by Triona Farrell                Ten minutes in the future, the world runs on an economy of job shares and apps, including Reapr: a crowdfunding platform to fund assassinations. Hunted by all of Los Angeles, Charlie hires Vita, the lowest-rated bodyguard on the Dfend app. As the campaign picks up speed, they’ll have to figure out who wants Charlie dead before the campaign’s 30 days—or their lives—are over. From Eisner-nominated writer CHRISTOPHER SEBELA (Heartthrob, We(l)come Back, Harley Quinn), RO STEIN & TED BRANDT (Captain Marvel, Raven: The Pirate Princess), TRIONA FARRELL (Runaways, Mech Cadet Yu), and CARDINAL RAE (BINGO LOVE, ROSE). Today, we're talking giant robots (and other cool stuff) with Greg Pak! Pak is a prolific comic book writer and filmmaker who you might know from a bunch of different stuff, depending on where your interests lie. Most recently, Pak has been playing in a futuristic world of giant robots and kids suddenly thrust into unexpected situations with Mech Cadet Yu (Volume One, which collects the first four issues, out from Boom! Studios now. Ongoing issues every month!) He's also got the brand-new Weapon H coming this spring from Marvel, which wonders what would happen if we combined Hulk and Wolverine DNA. In addition, Pak co-created the character of Amadeus Cho for Marvel's Totally Awesome Hulk and The Incredible Hercules. He also wrote Kingsway West (Dark Horse); Planet Hulk, World War Hulk, Weapon X (Marvel); John Wick, Battlestar Galactica (Dynamite); and just so much more. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. He collaborated with Jonathan Coulton on The Princess Who Saved Herself and Code Monkey Save World. He became a crowdfunding darling with those books and ABC Disgusting. He directed the feature film Robot Stories and several other shorts. And he's just an all-around cool cat. On this episode, we talk about his academic background in politics (he was a Rhodes Scholar!), his transition to graphic storytelling, Mech Cadet Yu, and Asian American representation.

Each installment features its own cast of strange characters, dealing with their own special sundae of suffering. And on the periphery of all of them, like the twinkly music of his colorful truck, is the Ice Cream Man—a weaver of stories, a purveyor of sweet treats. Friend. Foe. God. Demon. The man who, with a snap of his fingers—lickety split!—can change the course of your life forever.

Images can be found at http://wp.me/p42KN3-F9w On this week's Comics Syllabus podcast, Paul chats with comics creator Declan Shalvey about writing "Savage Town," an upcoming original graphic novel from Image Comics (out September 20, 2017). Shalvey, who broke out as an artist for his work on Marvel's "Moon Knight" and "Injection" from Image, has written comics before, but in "Savage Town" he presents a distinctive writing voice to a crime story set in Limerick, Ireland, this time drawn by artist Philip Barrett, with colors by Jordie Bellaire and letters by Clayton Cowles. Paul talks to Declan about finding just the right amount of dialect to depict in dialogue, the crime and gangster story inspirations for his tale and why crime is so effective a genre, and how "Savage Town" represents the Irish comic he's always wanted to see. Declan also touches on why Philip Barrett was perfect for this book, how he works this time with colorist-extraordinaire/Red Cube Studio-mate/partner Jordie Bellaire, and why art credit and creator ownership matter. But first, in the "General Ed" segment, Paul presents "The Review Session," a bi-monthly discussion about comics Paul is reading, making connections to the past few episodes of the podcast and looking forward to future episodes and discussions to come. Paul talk about our past couple months of Comics Syllabus episodes, and how comics discuss politics, identity, relationship and family, and culture, pointing ahead to future titles we will discuss: "Astro City" by Busiek and Anderson (Image/Vertigo), "Dept H" by Matt and Sharlene Kindt (Dark Horse), "Calexit" by Pizzolo and Nahuelpan (Black Mask), "Mech Cadet Yu" by Pak and Miyazawa (Boom!), and "Barrier" by Vaughan and Martin (Panel Syndicate).
