The feast of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, historically known as Corpus Christi, celebrates the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Instituted in 1264 by Pope Urban IV, this commemoration emphasizes the transubstantiation of bread and wine into the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ. It is often marked by solemn processions, Eucharistic adoration, and special masses. The Feast is traditionally celebrated on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday (which is 60 days after Easter). Thursday was specifically chosen because it is the day of the week that Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper. In the USA, Canada, and many other countries, it is observed on the Sunday following Trinity Sunday. This adjustment or Sunday transfer is purely for pastoral reasons, making it easier for the faithful to attend Mass and participate in processions without taking time off during the workweek. The faithful recently rejoiced at the news that Archbishop Fulton Sheen, the great American evangelist who lived from 1895 to 1979, has moved forward in the canonization process. The Vatican recently announced that he will soon be beatified, which is one step away from being declared a saint. This is an especially happy development for Word on Fire Catholic Ministries, which, as an apostolate dedicated to evangelization, has a special devotion to Archbishop Sheen; in fact, his portrait hangs just beyond the studio doors where we are recording this show, next to our other patrons, St. Thérèse of Lisieux and Pope St. John Paul II. The Prodigal Son refers to the story in the Gospel of Luke (15:11-32) about a son who squanders his inheritance and later returns to his father, who welcomes him back with a celebration, despite the anger and jealousy of his brother. Christians believe the parable illustrates God's unconditional love and forgiveness for sinners who repent. The secular term "prodigal son" has also come to mean a son or daughter who leaves home, acts irresponsibly, but then feels remorse and returns. The hymnal prayer "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us" originates from the Book of John and the Book of Revelation in the Bible, and has been incorporated into Christian liturgy by its Latin name, Agnus Dei (meaning Lamb of God) since at least the 7th century. The phrase originates with John the Baptist's declaration, who, upon seeing Jesus, proclaimed, "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29). This was a symbolic reference to the Passover lamb, an unblemished animal sacrificed to deliver the Israelites from slavery. that Jesus is the "Lamb of God". Jesus told a story about a farmer who sowed good seed, but an enemy later sowed weeds among the wheat while people slept. Fearing they would uproot the wheat, the farmer instructed his servants to let both grow until the harvest. At the harvest, the weeds would be gathered and burned, and the wheat would be stored in the barn.
