Dr. Kehaulani Fagatele-Folau joins this episode to introduce her doctoral research. We begin with Indigenous concepts and methods she used from the Madau-Moana to make sense of some of the colonial contexts Indigenous women of Oceania traverse in the academy. Some themes we discuss include Indigenous feminism, interconnectivity, sharing space, and relational ethics by using Niu/Neo/Knew Tā-Vā. Fagatele-Folau shares a re-imagined R.I.P. acronym, and deploys it as metaphor for laying to rest systems of power, as they work through the process of ‘becoming' a Madau-Moana cosmopolitan. We reflect on the possibilities in being rooted and mobile, and continuing to learn confidence with care through a broad sense of kinship. “Not all the powers that be are all the powers that are” – Kehau Fagatele-Folau Terms with introductory definitions: Madau (Pohnpeian for Ocean/Thought); Moana (Ocean in Tongan); Talanoa (Critical relational dialogue); Iroir (reflection/beautiful view/to position yourself for a beautiful view); Hoa (pair/partner/companion/connection); Hoamālie (harmonious partnership); Hoatamaki (imbalanced partnership); R.I.P. (Relationality, Intersectionality, Positionality); Mana (honour, prestige, potency, authority).

Healing The Spirit: Astrology, Archetypes & Artmaking

What medicine does hard astrology carry for us?How do we deepen our relationship with self, others, and the world through being with challenges? The hardship of life is often mirrored by astrology. One of the questions I consistently get as an astrologer is: "I'm going through something hard. Do you see that in my chart? What should I do to get out of it?"Usually, the answer is: yes, I see it in the chart. But whether the issue gets resolved through engaging astrology is a much trickier question. Sometimes, having astrological context inspires creative problem-solving. Other times, it leads into seemingly endless spirals of confusions, what-ifs, and so-whats – which can amplify feelings of powerlessness. In this episode, I shared my take on how to be with hard astrology. If you're feeling overwhelmed by the intense astrology of March 2025 – this one's for you. How can we design in ways that are "conducive to life"?...Edona Arnesen is highly passionate about food, farming, food systems, relationships and regeneration in unison, and how we can co-create better communities and systems for the common health of everything on Earth; the human and the non-human, and Nature whom we're all a tiny, connected part of. She finds systems thinking and systemic design fantastically interesting as philosophies and practices to act through. Edona went on to explore the world of resilient and regenerative food systems through participatory action learning at NMBU with her MSc in Agroecology, after a BSc in civil engineering. Her Master's thesis focused on social sustainability and leadership in the restaurant industry, and how that affects especially environmental sustainability in the industry. She has spent half her life closely connected to hospitality through work, both in service, in kitchens and bakeries, and in managerial positions. Practical experience on several organic and biodynamic farms has broadened her perspective and taught her to understand the reality of food producers with the joys, challenges, hinders and opportunities they find in their everyday lives as part of larger systems. Combining these competences lead Edona to Dagens, where she has been part of building a transparent, fair and resilient food system for the future, through data-driven direct trade between sustainable producers and professional buyers, locally.Today, Abbie and Edona explore the social and relational elements involved in creating resilient, regenerative food systems through stories; systems thinking; and localized, context-driven participation....Stories Lived. What if the deepest truth of reality lies not in substances or isolated things, but in the pure relationality that connects everything? John Vervaeke is joined by renowned scholar Douglas Hedley to explore James Filler's groundbreaking work "Heidegger, Neoplatonism, and the History of Being." John and Douglas examine the profound implications of viewing ultimate reality as fundamentally relational rather than substantial, uncovering significant convergences between Heidegger's later thought and the ancient Neoplatonic tradition. The dialogue goes into how Neoplatonic metaphysics offers potent solutions to the philosophical dilemmas posed by modernity and postmodernity, and why the notion of strong transcendence is essential yet challenging in contemporary thought. Douglas enriches the discourse with reflections on imagination, symbolism, and theological significance within the Neoplatonic heritage. Douglas Hedley is Professor of the Philosophy of Religion at Cambridge University. He was educated at Keble College, Oxford and at the University of Munich, and has previously taught at Nottingham University. He is the Director of the Cambridge Centre for the Study of Platonism and co-chair of the Platonism and Neoplatonism section of the American Academy of Religion. Dr Hedley's work centers on concepts of imagination, violence, and the sublime, and he has published widely, from early modern philosophy—particularly the Cambridge Platonists—to Coleridge. He is the Principal Investigator for the AHRC grant on The Cambridge Platonists at the Origins of Enlightenment: Texts, Debates, and Reception (1650-1730), and is co-editor of the Series Studies in Philosophical Theology. Show Notes In this conversation, Simon and Mishel explore the significance of First Nations worldviews, and how through the modern worldview we have lost our relationships to the land and wider ecologies including our ancestors.  Mishel McMahon, a proud Yorta Yorta woman living on Djaara Country, northern Victoria, Australia, and shares her lived experience and her academic research to help us break out of our limited modern mindsets, where humans are the top of a chain of being, rather than part of an ecology of co-existence and interdependence.  She emphasizes the need to reconnect, the importance of relationality, and the concept of cyclical time. Michelle shares insights on how these perspectives can inform health and healing practices, and the conversation culminates in a call for re-enchantment and recognition of our interdependence with the world around us. Reflections First Nations worldviews offer a broader understanding of reality. Modern mindsets often reduce our connection to nature and each other. Relationality extends beyond human relationships to include all entities. Cyclical time emphasizes the interconnectedness of past, present, and future. Ancestors play a crucial role in decision-making and identity. Everything in nature is infused with spirit, creating a sense of family. Collective identity fosters collaboration and mutual support. Re-enchantment is necessary to combat disenchantment in modern life. Thinking is a communal practice, influenced by our surroundings. Connection to place is fundamental for personal and collective transformation. Keywords First Nations, worldviews, modernity, relationality, ancestors, cyclical time, ecosystems, collective identity, re-enchantment, connection to nature Bio Mishel McMahon is a casual Senior Research Fellow, Violet Vines Marshman Research Centre and proud Yorta Yorta woman living on Djaara Country, northern Victoria. In this presentation delivered at the "Metaphysics and the Matter with Things: Thinking with Iain McGilchrist" conference—a collaborative event by the Center for Process Studies (CPS) and the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in March 2024—John Vervaeke explores the concept of "mattering" and its critical role in understanding the meaning of life. He contrasts "meaning in life" with the broader "meaning of life," emphasizing the importance of connectedness and belonging over mere purpose. Vervaeke draws on research to introduce "religio," a deep sense of connectedness that underpins our existence, and critiques materialism for overlooking the relational aspects of human life. Through cognitive science, biology, and philosophy, Vervaeke demonstrates how our intelligence and problem-solving abilities are deeply intertwined with our capacity to find what truly matters.   —   Metaphysics and the Matter with Things: Thinking with Iain McGilchrist was a collaborative conference put on by the Center for Process Studies (CPS) and the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in March of 2024. How do we hold the complexity of arriving at simplicity? How does becoming aware of love's presence help us transform fear into wisdom? How does working with our emotional pain assist with returning us to innocence? The theme for September is Arriving at Simplicity. The route to simplicity is often anything but simple. It can be riddled with confusion, chaos, and doubt. In this episode, I share some contemplations for us to return to throughout the month. September 2024 starts with a New Moon in Virgo. It ends with the Sun conjoining the North Node in Libra. In between, we have the Full Moon in Pisces, which ushers the second eclipse season of the year, and Mars entering Cancer.  If you enjoyed this podcast, consider booking a reading with me. How might thinking open a portal to embodied transcendence? What role do the right questions at the right time play in walking an open-hearted path?Thinking is often bedeviled in 'spiritual' spaces. Thinking has been marketed as the enemy of the heart-centered, spirit-led life. Thinking has been defined as the opposite of embodiment. Thinking has been dubbed the root of all sufferings. But does thinking not also happen in the body? Why does Life gift us minds alongside bodies and hearts, if we were asked to shut it down to reach spiritual mastery?I explore these spiky questions from the lens of the Mercury Retrograde in Virgo and the Mercury Cazimi in Leo.I also mentioned some of my teachers, Diana Rose Harper and Deborah Kremins, as well as a container I'm currently facilitating, Deep Spirit Medicine.Photo by Maksym Kaharlytskyi via Unsplash. What do astrologers learn from the practice of forecasting? How might studying astrology and contemplating the future help us be more present to our daily reality? In this conversation, I invited the incredible astrologer Sabrina Monarch for a discussion on the practice of astrological forecasting. Over the years, Sabrina and I have both cultivated a practice of sharing our perspectives on astrological transits with our audience and our communities. It's a rich practice that have assisted us both in honing our unique astrological voices. We thought we'd share some lessons we've learned as well as how this practice has expanded us as practitioners and as humans. Sabrina has been practicing & teaching evolutionary astrology for many years now. She was someone I studied with very early on in my journey, and my experience learning with her was invaluable to who I've become as an astrologer. Early in my studies, I signed up for her newsletter and quickly became enchanted by the inspired, image-driven, vivid ways that Sabrina wrote about astrology. Her forecasts were beyond mere delineations – they hold potential to transport readers into expanded experiences of reality. From now until August 11, 2024, Sabrina is running a Kickstarter campaign to support the creation of her forecasts & her podcast throughout the coming year. Through the Kickstarter, you can make a pledge to support Sabrina's work & in exchange receive discounted tuition for her signature course, Evolutionary Astrology Intensive, as well as workshops, readings, and a new course called Glamor Magic.Links to connect with Sabrina:Sabrina 2024-2025 Kickstarter CampaignSabrina's websiteSabrina's podcast, Magic of The Spheres, and her YouTube channelSabrina's Instagram If you enjoyed this podcast, consider booking a reading with me. We live in a historical conjuncture characterized by the rise of a range of social movements that aim to challenge different forms of domination: capitalism, patriarchy, racism, settler colonialism, just to name a few. However, critical scholars remain divided about how to think about the relations between these different struggles. The political stakes in these debates are enormous: attributing primacy to particular social processes or structures risks alienating constituencies that also experience other forms of domination, but analzying these processes as separate structures with their own distinct ‘logics' makes it difficult to find common ground on which to construct viable political coalitions. My guest today, geographer William Conroy, has written a series of articles that deal with thorny questions pertaining to the relationship between race, gender, ecology, and capitalism. We'll be discussing four articles in particular, the links to which you can find on the episode's page on the New Books Network web site: Conroy, William. 2023. “Background Check: Spatiality and Relationality in Nancy Fraser's Expanded Conception of Capitalism.” Environment and Planning A: Economy and Space 55 (5): 1091–1113. Conroy, William. 2024. “Spatializing Social Reproduction Theory: Integrating State Space and the Urban Fabric.” Review of International Political Economy 31 (3): 955–77.  Conroy, William. 2024. “Race, Capitalism, and the Necessity/Contingency Debate.” Theory, Culture & Society 41 (1): 39–58. Conroy, William. 2024. “Constitutive Outsides or Hidden Abodes? Totality and Ideology in Critical Urban Theory.” Urban Studies, January 22, 2024. Each of these articles deals with the question of how to study the interactions between forms of domination without succumbing to the dangers of a) reducing all axes of domination to effects of one fundamental antagonism, or b) reaching the bland conclusion that “everything is related to everything else” without specifying how or why forms of domination are related. Will is a PhD candidate at Harvard University, and he is a research affiliate of the Urban Theory Lab, which is housed at the University of Chicago. Learn more about your ad choices.
