Today we are excited to be joined by Stephen Kent, a political speaker/writer in Washington, D.C., and the author of the book "How the Force Can Fix the World: Lessons on Life, Liberty, and Happiness from a Galaxy Far, Far Away". He is also our very first guest on the show, and we had a blast getting to dive deeper into philosophy, politics, and life values that are paralleled in the great story of Star Wars. We get to know Stephen and his background in politics and podcasting, before jumping right into his book and the major themes within. We touch on the values and larger meaning of Star Wars, before getting into the idea of free will and how it applies to clone troopers. Later, we discuss the possibility of combining the ideology of the Sith and the Jedi, along with masks worn in Star Wars and in our own lives. Do we all wear masks at some point, and can they be used for good? And is the concept of empathy disappearing from society as we speak? Before wrapping things up, we dive into a major theme that is prevalent in almost all of our favorite fandom properties such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones, and that is our heroes aging. We have seen Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan, Indiana Jones, etc. being portrayed as old and washed up, struggling to rise to glory again. We touch on the audience's reception of such things, and what we think about the pattern. All this and more that we can't wait for you to hear! 01:15 - Introducing Stephen Kent12:44 - Star Wars Values, Redemption Stories, and Cancel Culture31:52 - Clone Troopers and Free Will, Combining Values of the Jedi and Sith40:45 - Masks We Wear, Why Star Wars is So Meaningful, The Lack of Empathy in People and Politics, Convenience Breeds Reliance1:15:30- How the Force Can Fix the World1:16:40 - The Last Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Indiana Jones, and the Aging of Our HeroesYou can find "How the Force Can Fix the World" wherever books are sold and in audiobook form on Audible! During my tenure at WTI, I made the kind of comedy that gets you put on lists and your words in the Wall Street Journal: “How I Became a ‘Far-Right Radical.” No longer with WTI, I am now fully independent and free to take on subjects I've always wanted to. In addition to producing sketch comedy, stand-up, and opinion writing, I also host The Lou Perez Podcast with new episodes every week. How'd I start out? I began doing improv and sketch comedy while an undergrad at New York University, where I was part of the comedy group the Wicked Wicked Hammerkatz. For years, I performed at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater (both in NYC and L.A.) in sketch shows with the Hammerkatz and my comedy duo, Greg and Lou. G&L are probably best known for our sketch "Wolverine's Claws Suck," which has over 20 million views on various platforms. I was a writer for Fox Sports' @TheBuzzer; produced The Attendants with the Above Average Network; produced pilots for FOX Digital and MSN Games; and was a comedy producer on TruTV's Impractical Jokers. I hosted the stand-up show Uncle Lou's Safe Place for two years in Los Angeles, performed at the Big Pine Comedy Festival, Bridgetown Comedy Festival, and co-created the political comedy podcast Unsafe Space. I taught creative writing at the City College of New York, "writing the web series" for Writing Pad, and comedy writing workshops for the Moving Picture Institute.
In this chapter of Rule the Galaxy, Joe, Brent and Nick welcome our special guest, Stephen Kent. Stephen is the host of the Beltway Banthas podcast @beltwaybanthas and the Author of a great new book, How the Force Can Fix the World His podcast started in 2016 after being tired of the political world we were living in at the time. Marco Rubio, the Padawan, bested the Master, Jeb Bush Stephen found that Star Wars was a buffer that allowed people on both sides of the aisle to come together over a single topic. He has interviewed many political figures and pundits including Glenn Beck and Van Jones Stephen loved the Jedi Apprentice books with Xanatos and Qui-Gon Jinn is his favorite character. Return of the Jedi is his favorite movie, and he would definitely go with Lule's saber from ROTJ. We cover so many great topics about our world and the Star Wars Universe. I think after some of Stephen's points our podcast is leaning more and more toward becoming a Count Dooku Fan Club. thanks for the artwork and review from @rebecca_deboer, now known as @cellogirl_music, Thanks for the great questions from @thedavemjones and @ddoc42 @stephen_kent89 on Twitter @rulethegalaxysw on Twitter RuletheGalaxySW@gmail.com Rule the Galaxy on Facebook and YouTube
Have you ever spoken in anger or put your foot in your mouth? It's sort of the way of the world these days, in case you haven't noticed or been online much. Today's podcast is an honest reflection on an experience I had with my own anger, understanding its source and a lesson on empathy. The Greek stoic Zeno once said, “Better to trip with the feet than the tongue.” This is true in so many ways. If you read How The Force Can Fix The World, you'll recall Chapter 2 on Empathy and the importance of being present when engaging with others. One should then in theory, be extra present when engaging with the world...which is what Twitter is. The words we choose matter more than the viewpoint they're meant to communicate. We live in a frightening time. Star Wars is steadfast in reminds us that Fear is the start of a road toward darkness. Fear leads to Anger, Anger leads to Hate, and Hate leads to Suffering. So says Yoda to a young Anakin Skywalker who admitted he missed his Mother. Understandably so, he was 9 years old and away from her and home for the first time in his life when he stood in the Jedi Council chamber on Coruscant. Surrounded by beady eyes and suspicion. What are you really afraid of? This is a meditation on FEAR, and you need to know your fear. name your fear and spend time reflecting on what it is that lies beneath the thing keeping you up at night. Why were the Jedi so obsessed with the prophecy of balance being brought to the Force? And why did they clearly fail so badly? It's because balance is easier said than done, and their moral commitments were out of step with the principle of what balance really is. This episode is an explainer on how Rey and Kylo Ren eventually brought balance to the Force, and why the Jedi and Sith both fail when it comes to having a healthy relationship with the emotion of LOVE. Do we have free will and the power to choose our own destiny? Star Wars is clear eyed about both the power and reality of choice, but also the gravity of choices that were made FOR us. How have you had choices in your life limited by circumstance for the actions of others? We've all been there. But you can do something about it. He has helmed more than 170 episodes of this unique program. Oddly enough, his path to traditional media ran through podcasting first. Beltway Banthas became such a success it launched Kent into public speaking, fan conventions and political events, then on to TV news as a commentator. He has a book coming out in October called "How the Force Can Fix the World." Happy Friday, and may the Force be with you. That's right. You already know what to expect. Today we are having good friend and Star Wars fanatic Stephen Kent returning to the program to discuss all things Star Wars, but through a unique lens as Steven is also a brand new author, having an awesome new book, "How the Force Can Fix the World", coming out October 26, 2021. I am so excited. I already have my copy pre ordered, and today we are doing a sneak peek into one of the chapters; talking about fear. If you are a longtime Star Wars fan, you know that fear is the path to the dark side... fear leads to anger anger leads to hate hate leads to suffering. Today, Steven joins the program as we outline fear and how it's important to make sure you subdue your own fear before it subdues you. Author Stephen Kent joins the show to break down the big-picture themes we can take away from Star Wars. As he explains in the upcoming book HOW THE FORCE CAN FIX THE WORLD, the Star Wars saga's "politics" aren't a partisan weapon but are really more about hope, choice, humility, empathy, redemption, balance, and fear. You don't want to miss this stellar conversation or Stephen's book—buy it below. But, fair warning, Stephen's food take at the end of the episode is pretty disgusting. Matt Kibbe is joined by Stephen Kent, author of “How the Force Can Fix the World,” and Free the People executive producer Matt Battaglia to discuss the valuable moral and political lessons of the world’s most popular movie franchise. The Star Wars saga contains deep and highly relevant truths to help us repair much of what is wrong with the world today, starting with the need to reject fear and embrace hope. At a time when it seems like every aspect of society is dominated by the fear of what might go wrong, we are desperately in need of a moral compass that points toward redemption, forgiveness, and a future that can be better and brighter than today.
