The book Washington insiders have been tongue-wagging about for days now - "Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again" - was leaked. It'll be a best-seller and have pundits and conservative snipers taking aim at a perceived "conspiracy" or "cover-up" in the Biden White House, but how much meat is even on this bone? All I've read (so far) is a lot of hindsight from the same folks who weren't saying much from the positions they could have been long before the former President bowed out of the 2024 presidential race. A touch disingenuous if you ask me. CNN's Jake Tapper (who of course went on CNN today to discuss leaked revelations and tease of more) and co-author Alex Thompson (Axios) spoke to a lot of people after the election who weren't willing to go on the record before it - and that's not unusual in and of itself - but it belies a good bit of "well, what good is that to anyone, now?" responses, including from my guest today. With me to discuss the fallout, himself quoted in a Politico piece last week on the return of Joe Biden to the spotlight (he did two TV appearances last week) is Atlanta-based liberal political strategist Andrew Heaton. Among the "now they tell us "quips: there was consideration to having the former President use a wheelchair. See, that they didn't speaks more to us as voters than to their alleged/perceived "cover-up." We see "old guy in a wheelchair" and make (logical? illogical?) leaps about his mental abilities - which, I still take issue with.
Eric Brakey and Andrew Heaton debate whether libertarians should prioritize building local liberty-focused societies like the Free State Project or focus on reforming the federal government.
With Rev. Senator Raphael Warnock preparing to host his own town hall Sunday in Fulton County, and with the fresh memory of dissatisfaction at Senator Jon Ossoff's hall last week, coupled with Georgia polling that shows how unpopular Democrats are right now, it bears asking: are voters aware that they voted for this mess and left Democrats with too-few tools to do anything about it? Laughably, even Republicans polled want Democrats to (somehow) do more to push back when their choice for President goes too far. Wait, what? With me to discuss is Atlanta-based political strategist Andrew Heaton.
It's become easier to hate those with whom we disagree on matters of policy and politics, and our ideological tribes insulate us from thoughtful challenge. Andrew Heaton hopes to help you navigate a coarsening culture with his book, Tribalism is Dumb. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Yesterday's 'Meet the Press' was DE-pressing for "D" party folks. When Steve Kornacki rolled out the latest NBC News poll, it showed the party with a meager 27% approval rating. It's a three-decades long low, and after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer rallied enough Democrat Senate votes to pass a continuing resolution to keep the federal government (somewhat) churning, there's every likelihood a poll number like that could go lower.Lower than an all-time low.If ever a term defined the Democratic Party, that's it.Joining me today to discuss where the party can/should/might go from there, local liberal political consultant Andrew Heaton. The former Warnock campaign aide and I discuss various liberal politicians and their various means to message and resist (or iwhatever you call what Schumer did). Is there a leader among the current crop? Plus, hear the one name I'm REALLY high on who isn't even in office right now (but Trump wasn't in 2015 either) but who seems to have a lot of the skills and attributes that could resurrect the Democratic Party - even though he's been quite a critic of it the last two-plus decades.

Politics shouldn't be a team sport, but it has become one. Far too many of us blindly support politicians or parties as opposed to critically assessing ideas and policies. Where has this tribalism come from, how has it got so bad, and what do we do about it? To help Will answer those questions, he is joined by comedian, political satirist and author, Andrew Heaton. Andrew's new book is titled, "Tribalism is Dumb: Where It Came from, How It Got So Bad, and What to Do about It.”Follow Will Kingston and Fire at Will on social media here.Read The Spectator Australia here.

On episode 81, Charles talks to Andrew Heaton about his new book, Tribalism is Dumb: Where It Came from, How It Got So Bad, and What to Do about It. Is tribalism bad per se, or is it just bad in politics. Why has it got so much worse recently? To what extent is technology to blame? What can we do about it?The dial-up tone in the introduction was recorded by lintphishx and is used under a CC 3.0 License.

Comedian, author, and political satirist Andrew Heaton joins Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis to explore where our political tribalism comes from, why it's gotten out of hand, and what to do about it. About Andrew Heaton From mightyheaton.com Andrew Heaton is a comedian, author, and political satirist. He's the host of “The Political Orphanage” comedy and news podcast, and scifi deep dive podcast “Alienating the Audience.” He's a frequent Reason TV contributor and hosted the popular webseries “Mostly Weekly.” He's performed standup comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as a finalist in the China International Standup Competition, and throughout the United States and Europe. A former congressional staffer, he's the best-selling author of “Laughter is Better Than Communism,” as well as two funny novels. He once opened for William Shatner, who said he's “very funny.” So there. As a UCB-trained sketch writer and improviser Andrew Heaton comprises half of the comedy duo Lost History, which has performed improvised historical reenactments at the Del Close Marathon and Austin's Out of Bounds Comedy Festival. He's a founding member of the popular New York indie improv team Lumberon, and an alumni of the sketch troupes 17:38 and First Runner Up. As a political comedian Andrew Heaton has entertained numerous think tanks and advocacy groups, student associations, and sinister political action committees. He's a regular at Electoral Dysfunction at the People's Improv Theater in New York, and the Totally Dishonest Media Show at Stand Up New York. He hosted the award-winning series EconPop, a comedy show which explained economics through popular culture. Andrew Heaton is the author of the best-selling work of political satire Laughter is Better Than Communism, and two funny paranormal novels: Frank Got Abducted (about aliens) and Happier as Werewolves (a tender coming of age novel involving werewolves). His latest book is Tribalism is Dumb, detailed below. About Tribalism is Dumb Tribalism has made politics so awful I was forced to write a book about it. Well, fine. Fine. This book explores the evolutionary roots of loving our team and hating the enemy team, and why groupish caveman instincts linger in our minds today. It answers: If tribalism is hardwired into us, what changed in the last twenty years? How did partisanship get so loud, toxic, and obnoxious, and ruin last Thanksgiving? Finally, it says what we can do about it as individuals navigating relationships, and as society as a whole. "Tribalism is Dumb" will make you less flummoxed by partisanship, political loudmouths, and dogmatic pundits. It will make you taller, slimmer, and more attractive to everyone you could legally hit on. And it will make you better equipped to navigate tribalism in the wild.
Kamala Harris is the American High Speed Rail candidate.Very expensive. Popular with liberal city dwellers. But ultimately a lot of hype that leads to very little. While she isn't necessarily a poor candidate in every context, she struggled twice on the national stage with median voters first within and then outside of her party. I'm not going to do a blow by blow of her campaign because this is a eulogy and eulogies are broad. So let's start here:Kamala Harris is from California. Not a bygone version of California. Not Ronald Regan's California. Not Roger Rabbit's California. The California over the last two decades. One that saw the rise of San Francisco as a financial and cultural hub AND post-pandemic has become synonymous with progressive failure. That California. If you are a California politician the first decision you need to make when explaining yourself to the nation is: does California suck right now or not?If you say it sucks, then you explain how your beloved home state has fallen victim to the plight of the modern world. Blame capitalism, blame a lack of morals, decry the spread of drugs… if you want to get spicy, blame local or state government. Or you can decide California is great actually, blame the media for spreading a distorted image. Kamala Harris did neither. The only time she mentioned California was in her backstory. Oakland was a prop. But for Presidential candidates, your past is your governing philsophy. And I don't mean the bullet points she'd recite, (did you know she prosecuted trans-national gangs?) I mean your leadership. Are you a head cracker? Are you a unifier? Are you a turnaround artist? Are you a technocrat? With Kamala, we got a little bit of everything. Which means we got nothing. And I'll give credit to her campaign staff, who I didn't think did a great job, because I don't know that they had much to work with.Kamala Harris lacks dynamism and appeals to a limited audience. She is a highly-touted college quarterback who underperforms in the pros. Based on their initial promise they get a second shot on another team only to be terrible there too. Why do we think the third time is the charm? She emerged from her tenure as San Francisco Attorney General as a let's-enforce-the-laws liberal and was lauded for it. By the time she became California AG she had liberal wins to notch including legalizing gay marriage. Her election to Senate from the one-party state while impressive for her resume is not indicative of someone with political skill or campaign savvy. Her early wins say more about her than anything that came after because California was on the ascendancy after that. The nation was begining to agree with positions California had taken in the last century: specifically on marijuana and LGBT freedoms. The tide rose and her boat with it. But to be clear: she's a system product. An assembly line politico. Sleek and shiny but quite possibly purposeless. We saw this when she leaned into progressive messaging while running for president in 2020, it backfired. Some blamed this on her embracing "woke" politics or poor advisers, but the real issue was deeper: she's never had to dig deep and find a compelling version of herself before. She certainly didn't find it in 2019.True authenticity emerges when voters believe in a politician's core identity—even if they disagree with their views. They sense an underlying worldview driving the candidate forward. Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump all possessed this quality. Harris notably lacked it, exemplifying a broader Democratic Party tendency to believe messaging alone can solve fundamental problems. No amount of messaging could separate Harris from her identity as a politician from America's most progressive state. And she can't explain it as a stregth or distance herself from it as a weakness. She's not a poor speaker— just uninspiring. Unlike George W. Bush, who wasn't particularly dynamic but clearly stood for something, Harris never conveyed a sense of deep conviction.Without conviction, you can't win. You need to spark something in swing voters or motivate your likely supporters to actually turn out. Without that spark, you have nothing. This is all compounded by the fact that she was dealt a tough hand. This is the second visit the Campaign Undetarker has made to the Democratic Party this cycle. President Joe Biden drops out before the convention, admitting to America that they'd reject him and the job he'd done as president. And in the late summer, Kamala faced a tricky choice. How do you handle Joe? She decided not to. Okay, allow me one bit of back seat driving for the campaign. In my opinion, her only viable path forward would have been resigning the Vice Presidency. She could have done this gracefully—simply stating she wanted to pursue her own vision of government. Would it have left the Biden Administration scandalized? Yes. But that's happening anyway. Why tie yourself to the mast of a sinking ship when you have a chance to win the presidency? This would have distinguished her from the administration without directly criticizing him. Now when she dodged she could always point to her sacrifice which would speak louder than any second guessing. The fact that this option wasn't seriously considered reveals how Democrats misread the situation. They treated her like an interchangeable part, failing to recognize that when crafting a multi-year national narrative, you can't take voters for granted. The audience isn't dumb. Shape the story how you want, they're not slow. You need to be alive. You need to be vital.Only bold moves could have saved her. Instead, we got a rehash of post-Obama Democratic presidential campaigns: celebrity endorsements, polished interviews, and rigid talking points. Not a speck of humanity in sight. When you're trailing by 30 points, you need to get aggressive. You need to try every strategy possible. If you're not willing to think creatively, what's the point? But this isn't simply a eulogy. No, this is a prelude. In politics, what is dead may never die. I believe Kamala Harris is the next governor of California and I think she might be popular. California might be the only state that would realistically think of Kamala as a centrist. She will have the political clout to do otherwise unpopular things that will be quality of life improvements to the citizens. She could go back to the style that suits her the best: Kamala the Law and Order Liberal. To use a football analogy. Mac Jones was a good quarterback in college at Alabama but has been mediocre on two NFL teams. But what if he could go back to college? There is every reason to believe he'd be awesome.Same for Governor Harris. But if she decides to run for president again? I'll be saying the same thing I said in 2019. The same thing I'm saying now. If she runs for president a third time, her ambitions will…REST IN PEACEChapters* (00:00:50) Introduction: Setting the Stage for 2025 Politics* (00:01:17) Kamala Harris's Presidential Eulogy* (00:13:23) PAX MAGA: Republican Dominance in the 2024 Election* (00:18:03) Biden's Legacy and Party Dynamics* (00:26:03) Reflections on Election Predictions* (00:40:01) Closing Thoughts: The Path Ahead This is a public episode. Caught '60 Minutes' last night as they spent 13-plus minutes detailing all the many and varied ways states like Georgia have exhaustively responded to election denialism. The consensus: it's nearly impossible to steal a Presidential election. Well, duh. Still, over the weekend, a handful of Georgia counties opened their doors to let absentee ballot-holders hand in those ballots - what with Louis DeJoy having wrecked the US Postal Service - much to the chagrin of various county GOP folks, the Georgia GOP and the Trump family-infiltrated Republican National Committee. They sued; and lost. They're incapable of reading state law (so they'll surely seek to change it if 'he' loses again - watch). It just got me to wondering: when will the duped MAGA voter get mad at being duped so much by the people duping them? "Bill & Irina" got their hackles up over misinformation so each of them got physically involved enough to see for themselves no laws were broken. They're never mad at talk radio, Fox News, the social media accounts they follow and they're certainly never going to be mad at "him," though. On to discuss these and the millions of other sad-sacks is local Democratic strategist Andrew Heaton. We also talk polling (uh, hi Iowa) and in-state down-ballot prospects. And getting a jump on Tuesday's show, I threw in the first segment for bonus audio because I wanted to get back to people being lied to and incapable of seeing "water's wet." Bill Maher's final "new rule" on last Friday's show speaks to that, economically.

Tuesday night's vice presidential debate, moderated by CBS, doesn't seem to have moved the needle much with voters. "Do no harm" seems to be the clear winner - which, on the surface should benefit J.D. Vance more. I happen to think the soundbites leave more "meat on the bone" for Harris/Walz to make use of for "leftovers," though. Joining me to discuss is local Democratic consultant Andrew Heaton. Also, if you don't know who "Mencious Moldbug " is yet, get to know his creepy influence on J.D. Vance, the MAGA-churian candidate who clings to his every thought and word. There's a lot about him in print (here, here and most recently here) but political media has largely let Vance's affinity for this far-right lunatic's philosophy. That is, until Rachel Maddow seamed it all together for the masses. I'll credit Michael Millerman - political philosopher and scholar - for being on this story months ago, as well.

With Sunday afternoon's jaw-dropping announcement by President Joe Biden that he'd be bowing out of the presidential race, reporters, cable news shows and pundits (along with us podcast hosts) were scrambling for details and folks to discuss the ramifications. I had two of the best today - Melita Easters with the Georgia WIN List and Andrew Heaton of Sagamore Hill Political Consulting. Hear Melita and I discuss this important moment in women's and minority women's history, then Andrew and I discuss the peculiarity of Kamala's 100-ish day campaign. Then you'll have to hear how righties are "flabbergasting" all over themselves - the tell that they know their "sure thing" is anything but, now. ' There's CNN's resident conservative Scott Jennings unsure why we aren't seeing the COVID-addled President, and former Trump lackey Stephen Miller pissy because Trump's spent money smearing Biden already. I haven't even gotten to the "greatest hits" from Newt Gingrich and Kellyanne Conway or Donald's instant reaction.

They also touch on the economic policies of Javier Milei in Argentina and the debate around austerity measures. The conversation explores the need for better work-life balance laws in the United States, particularly regarding paid time off (PTO). All my years in radio broadcasting taught me that low-yield responses made for garbage data to make decisions off of, so maybe Tuesday's super-low turnout means "disregard it," but I'm joined today by Andrew Heaton, political strategist with Sagamore Hill Consulting, to discuss what to (and not to) make of the results anyway. I got a little heat for opting to "shrug off" Harrison Butker and my outrage for his 19th century commencement speech, but I'm actually very much in line with the women of "The View," too so forgive me if I choose to believe I'm not "with women" just because I think people are amplifying a message undeserving of this much attention. Also, while the right is feigning indignation at the potential (there is none) of Butker being "cancelled," Jon Stewart at "The Daily Show" deftly points out who the BIGGEST "cancel" caller is. He's a large, loud, orange-hued fella.
Protests over Israel and Hamas have become so heated at Columbia that it's canceled in-person classes the rest of the semester. Anti-Israel protests are becoming not just a flashpoint in America's culture war, but within Blue Team itself. What's happening? The World's Smartest Podcast Network assembles to discuss: Andrew Heaton, Dr. Andrea Jones-Rooy, and Michael Ira Kaplan. Huzzah - most the Atlanta Beltline will be done in time for the World Cup in 2026. And? Most soccer fans will be nowhere near it, so forgive me if I don't understand the celebratory tone over that milestone. Aid to Ukraine - tied to aid to Israel and Taiwan AND a potential TIkTok ban - may have damning effects on support for the incumbent President from the under-30 voter. I discuss that and more with Andrew Heaton, political consultant with Sagamore Hill Consulting.

Andrew Heaton joins us to discuss the amazing amount of inspiration Hidden Fortress provided for Star Wars, as well as going over the film itself. Today, we're doing a political retrospective when we earnestly ask the question, "are you better off now than you were four years ago?" Antipathy towards communism tends to come from its consequences–liberal democracy and markets have yielded greater prosperity, so we should embrace them over socialism. Michael Malice posits a different argument–that regardless of consequence, the Soviet Union and allied communists were evil from the get go, and should be remembered and condemned for it. He is the author of “The White Pill: A Tale of Good and Evil.” He joins to discuss. The World's Smartest Podcast Networks convenes to ask: is Cancel Culture on its way out? Comedian Hannah Gadsby's art exhibit “Pablo-Matic” draws attention to the misogynist side of Pablo Picasso… but didn't seem to get much attention itself. Turner Sparks, Andrea Jones-Rooy, and Andrew Heaton combine forces to discuss the end of Cancel Culture and how funny comedy needs to be to be comedy.
