Why do I say yes when I really want to say no? Why do women, more often than men, gravitate toward people pleasing? I found myself asking these questions and thus pondering: What do I think I'm accomplishing when I'm so agreeable? What am I actually accomplishing? To take it a step further, I pondered the reverse: What am I actually accomplishing when I'm being more controlling? As we start Season 5 of Leadership Is Feminine, I want to focus on a time of change and some decompression from the pressures we've all been under. One definite source of pressure as leaders is people pleasing, as is the opposite, which I term people depleting. This is when people are demanding and controlling, so they themselves can be the one pleased. An interesting fact is that we can find ourselves on either side, depending on the issue and circumstances. But no matter what side we're on, we can help mitigate the resulting pressure when we better understand people pleasing and controlling as leaders. “You're saying yes… not to please the other person. She smoked cigarettes, was obese, had a horrible diet, and was under a lot of chronic stress. Unfortunately, her mom died at 36. Dr. Lori made it her mission to help people in the health realm. [09:20] The Differences Between Acute Inflammation and Silent Inflammation We have three types of inflammation: Acute: we know the inflammation is there because it's uncomfortable, and it hurts. It's a cut on your finger, the terrible head cold, and the sprained ankle. This inflammation is great because it tells you that something is wrong with your body. Silent: the name suggests danger. It's silent; you don't know it's there. 75% of our country has silent inflammation, and they don't even know it. It's the core cause of illness, disease, faster aging, and weight gain. Fatflammation: fat cell inflammation is silent inflammation in the fat cells. The types of foods most Americans are eating is creating a body that is producing inflammatory molecules. When the fat cell gets bloated, it expands. The fat cell won't be happy. When the fat cell is not happy, it will act like it's sick or infected. Unfortunately, doctors will put a band-aid on chronic inflammation. [15:15] Foods For Inflammation Keto is an anti-inflammatory diet. Foods that will stop inflammation are things like omega-3. The critical foods for keto: Wild, fatty fish Seafood Berries Green tea The keto choices that we have are usually anti-inflammatory [17:15] The Problem With Consuming Unstable Fats on Keto Our cell membrane is thin, but it's essential for optimal health. The health of our cell membrane will determine your overall health. It allows nutrients to come in and out. The membrane is made of fat. Corn oil, vegetable oil, soil oil, canola oil, safflower oil, cottonseed oil are highly processed and highly refined. The body does not know what to do with these processed oils. The cell membrane uses fats that you're eating. So if you're eating vegetable oils, those fats will become your cell membrane. [21:40] The Relationship Between The Cell Membranes and The Mitochondria   The mitochondria are everywhere – they are crucial because they generate ATP, which is the energy that our cell needs to survive. Stop eating the types of foods that are ruining the cell membrane. Then, ensure that you have enough magnesium. Magnesium is crucial for your optimal health and weight. The mitochondria starts sending out signals of distress to your body. Then, your body will begin to inflame within the cell. Until we intervene and make healthier choices, then the inflammation will continue. [25:55] The Importance of Magnesium When you eat low carb, you are emitting a lot of fluids. With that fluid comes a lot of precious minerals like magnesium. Lori says that people should take magnesium as a supplement. Lori will take magnesium threonate. There are many types of magnesium. You can use a supplement that has nine different types of magnesium. If you're overweight, you are going to need more magnesium. If you have foggy thinking, then you're going to need more. 600 mg is excellent. [30:00] Getting In and Out of Ketosis When we go in and out of ketosis, we teach our bodies how to be metabolically flexible. Depending on what works for you, ramp up your carb intake one or two days a week. However, if you're losing weight, then stay strict on the keto diet. When the weight starts to fall off, your body will be able to handle the carbohydrates. Otherwise, you won't be prepared for carbs. [32:35] Benefits From Fasting Health is about ketosis. If you don't want to do the ketogenic diet, then fasting will provide ketosis. Lori will do 14-16 hours of fasting each day. During fasting, your body will reset. If you have insulin resistance, intermittent fasting is a fantastic way to repair your body. [39:15] About Dr. Lori's Favorite Lab Tests Test your vitamin D. If you have a low vitamin D level, then you have an inflammation problem. Your vitamin D levels should be at 70 or higher. CRP value is important; the lower, the better. 1 or 2 is ideal. Stress is inevitable. We're running our businesses, cherishing our personal lives, navigating the changing world around us… No matter where we turn, stressors are present. Simply trying to tell ourselves not to feel stressed, and to just relax or to just suck it up, is unhelpful and often ineffective. I want to offer an approach that helps: acknowledging the stress, identifying what's going on when we feel stressed and knowing what we can do to mitigate it. As we examine how to manage stress for women business owners, I want to discuss the elements of stress. I believe there are major contributing factors such as resistance to the truth, how we buffer stress, and our personal tipping points. In consideration of stressors, we have countless outside sources but the inner source – that is, our own inner dialogue – is the overpowering one. Therefore, the thoughts you think are the ultimate source of stress, and framing them is key to management. Then everything shifted. The owner of the company decided that job descriptions were going to be combined, and no longer would the team be able to play to their strengths. This eroded the sense of accountability.  Darren relates how this transition negatively affected the team dynamics, and how team members experienced trust issues, clarity, and self-doubt. They went from engaged to highly disengaged. Although the company grew in revenue over the next year, the bottom line was massively threatened. The company grew, but the team didn’t. This was incredibly painful. Darren provides some examples of having to push back on a client trying to force him to violate the company’s immutable laws. In the construction industry, the idea is that you’ll be able to make it up in volume. This is a myth!  Being set up for failure: Darren describes being a fire-fighter having to put out “fires” on other projects because an estimator was trying to manage a job. He questioned why more time wasn’t being spent training the estimators so they could be more successful in their projects. “Controlled burns” would have been spending the time to align talent and deciding which roles people stayed best in.  Dr. Sabrina summarizes the Tap the Potential Solution for creating a highly profitable, great place to work. CBH Homes has also received “Best Places to Work” awards for the last 7 years.  Ronda relates how CBH Homes surveys their employees to make sure their team loves them. Ask yourself if you were the employee, would you want to go and spend your day at the company? Would you enjoy it? Ronda’s leadership team created a list of 12 attributes that they wanted their team members to have. Some examples she provided: be a high producer, be coachable, strive for greatness, be a team player, communicate, be grateful, have an attractive attitude, have fun, and be fun. This is how they hire like-minded people.  Dr. Sabrina points out how you must have a lean and mighty team to be profitable in a tight labor market. Ronda mentions the importance of taking very good care of those team members. A-players need help in slowing down and having fun so they don’t burn out. Make the time for weekly one-on-one conversations with your employees. Consider asking your employees if there’s anything you can do to make their lives better. Dr. Sabrina and Ronda chat about the importance of staying curious. Women make up 70% of CBH Homes work force. This is mostly because men typically do not make it through the pre-interview gauntlet. “Mutually invested relationships” are what business owners should strive for. Run your ranch high and tight! Ronda explains what this means to her. Individual goals have to align with the team goals. Team goals have to align with the company goals.
