When most people talk about Rosé wine, they are most likely referring to Provence Rosé. Most people also probably think that Provence Rosé is what all Rosé wine tastes like, but that is not true. In this latest getting serious about Rosé episode, we spend some time talking about why that is. Now, it is true that Rosé from Provence is the most popular, and good ones are crisp and refreshing with good acidity which makes them favorites for summer sippers and pairing with lighter fare. But we bet there is a lot about Provence Rosé that you don't know about. Which is why we are getting serious about Rosé. Made generally from a blend of Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah - and sometimes many other grapes - this French Rosé has a distinctive taste profile and color that are hard to miss. A sensational number from Post Malone. A$AP Rocky's critically acclaimed crowd pleaser. And an unexpected hit from Kevin Hart. What may sound like a Spotify playlist is actually a trio of brands built and marketed by Global Brand Equities. Founded in 2019 by Irish expat James Morrissey, Global Brand Equities is focused on developing innovative and creator-led beverage alcohol brands. Morrissey's vision is to meet modern consumers where they live and drink via a contemporary approach to alcoholic beverages, one that lives at the intersection of media, entertainment and premium experiences. Global Brand Equities has aligned with the aforementioned Malone, Rocky and Hart to launch fast-growing brands Maison No 9 French Rosé, Mercer + Prince Canadian Whisky and Gran Coramino Tequila, respectively. The company also markets Sunny Vodka, a premium spirit co-founded by social media influencers Zack Bia and Stas Karanikolaou. In this episode, Morrissey spoke about how his prior experience in hospitality has shaped his perspective on novel consumer brands, the foundations for mutually beneficial celebrity partnerships, why it is critical to understand and operate within the traditional infrastructure for producing and distributing beverage alcohol brands and the effectiveness of its multi-pronged marketing strategy. Show notes: 0:46: Interview: James Morrissey, Founder, Global Brand Equities – Taste Radio editor Ray Latif met with Morrissey at Global Brand Equities' office in the Soho neighborhood of Manhattan where they riffed on the entrepreneur's familiar name and discussed how his background as a club and nightlife promoter in Ireland led him to New York City. He also explained his belief that the beverage alcohol industry had lacked an authentic connection to modern consumers and lacked the type of desirable innovation seen in other industries, why he saw the rosé wine category as ripe for a consumer-facing brand and how he first met and cultivated a relationship with Post Malone. Later, he explained how, despite a crowded space for celebrity-backed liquor brands, he saw opportunities to innovate in the categories of Canadian whiskey and premium tequila and why A$AP Rocky and Kevin Hart were the ideal partners for each, and why moving at “the speed of culture” is key to Global Brand Equities' marketing strategy.  Brands in this episode: Maison No 9 French Rosé, Mercer + Prince Canadian Whisky, Gran Coramino Tequila, Sunny Vodka, Casamigos, Teramana Tequila

GLF Wines owner Greg La Follette ("la-FOLL-et") is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger, to talk about his label GLF Wines, and more. The Drive co-host Harry Duke is also in the studio. Greg has been on CWC a few times before. The first was this episode on April 12, 2017. We heard about his previous label Alquimista Cellars in his next episode on November 21, 2018, then again on June 17, 2020. Dan Berger's Cellar Dweller of the Week This is a six-year-old French Rosé from Côtes-du-Rhone that Dan kept as an experiment. Usually he would not keep a Rosé this long, but it was so good when it was young he kept one just to see what would happen. It is mainly Grenache and it is still flavorful although a bit past its prime. Dan calls it “toasty” and remembers it had more peach and dried peach flavors before. Another unusual aspect is its copper color, another product of aging. Riesling is Dan Berger's favorite variety and this year he is actually making some, and Greg La Follette is his winemaking consultant in the project. He is getting three tons of Riesling grapes from a grower in Mendocino. He also made some Cabernet Sauvignon, called Berger, which was not for sale. Bottle Barn has a vast selection of great wines, from everywhere, some of which you have never heard of, at bargain prices. Dan spent some time at Bottle Barn today and gives an extensive report on their vast selection. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. Greg La Follette arrives Greg La Follette has arrived, with a bandaged finger. His new brand is GLF, Greg La Follette wines and he also has Marchelle Wines to specialize in small scale production from old vines. He begins his story, “Well, I'm a farmer.” (That's true, but he is also a scientist.) He has grown grapes on five continents and consulted to many winemakers around the world. Greg was first a student and then a teacher at UC Davis. Retired from that career, he is now devoted to his own projects and to being a grandfather. He worked for Zelma Long at Simi and worked with Mary Ann Graf there, back when they were all laying the foundations for the present day stature of wine country. Alquimista Cellars did not make it through the pandemic. (That was his previous label, which he talked about in his previous CWC episodes.) The wines went mostly to Michelin-ranked restaurants, with Chardonnays starting at $60 and Pinots from $75 to $120. Their bottled wines went to his partner and he kept the barrel wines, which he has labeled under GLF now. The GLF wines sell for $36 on the website, sometimes less in a couple of Florida-based discount retailers. Greg tells about having been André Tchelistcheff's last pupil. His present GLF brand is dedicated to making premium wine accessible. Ever since he was a wine student he wanted to make wines that people could afford. His GLF and Marchelle brands both accomplish that. Marchelle is devoted to ancient vines. They are available at the website marchellewines.com.

The Lomasi Bee Well Rosé 2020 is a $6.99 ALDI wine sourced from vineyards in the Monterey County AVA inside California's Central Coast AVA. ALDI does not offer any information on the making of this Rosé, so which grapes are used, and the production methods are a mystery.Lomasi WInes is a trademark owned by a large Monterey winery that often produces wine for ALDI and Trader Joe's. If you Google Lomasi, you will find them. I'm not particularly eager to name the producing winery since if their name is not on the label, it may not be a wine they would sell to retail shops. These store brand wines are often created to the customer's (ALDI) specifications and price-point and may not represent the winery's own line of wines. ALDI typically owns the trademark for their wine brands; that way, they can change producers if the need arises and still keep a popular label going. The producing winery owns the Lomasi Bee Well Rosé 2020, not ALDI, so that this wine may be slightly different from the usual ALDI fare. The wine packaging is first-rate, and this bottle would look good on your table at Easter. A young Rosé should pair well with ham, so do not let the $6.99 price tag hold you back. The alcohol content is 12.5% on the low side for modern California wines, so this should not be an overly ripe and fruity Rosé. The front label proclaims the Lomasi Bee Well Rosé 2020 is sustainably farmed, and the producing winery is a leader in sustainably farmed and made wines.Their 12 estate vineyards are all certified sustainable, so maybe there is a possibility that this sub-seven buck wine may be partly estate grown. There are some positives about the Lomasi Bee Well Rosé 2020, attractive label, an excellent producing winery, and certified sustainable production.Lomasi Bee Well Rosé 2020 Tasting NotesThe color is more coral than pink. The nose is good; it reminds me of French Rosé, cherry, strawberry mixed with tangerine, a slightly creamy scent, soft spice, and a light floral bouquet. This is a dry Rosé with firm flavors and balanced acidity. It starts with dried strawberry and slightly sour cherry, followed by candy spice. The mid-palate adds orange juice, light herbs, orange zest, and apricot. The flavors are nice and chewy; this is not a light and fluffy Rosé. The acidity gets you licking your lips and reaching for the next sip.The SummaryThe Lomasi Bee Well Rosé 2020 can hold its own with most under $20 Rosé.This is not a dumbed-down, cookie-cutter Rosé; the Lomasi Bee Well Rosé 2020 is a wine well worth drinking. This is an excellent wine to pair with the Easter meal.

This week we forgot what day of the week it was and brining you our episode a little later than usual. Check out our interview with Stephanie Owens of Reach Higher. A program created by the amazing Mrs. Obama that focuses on helping high schools students aim for more after graduation! Stephanie shares her background, how the organization came to be, as well as great stories about her experience with our Forever FLOTUS! We also sipped some amazing JNSQ Rosé and talked about the impact of COVID-19 Social Distancing this Easter! This is a superior Rosé. Refreshing and balanced, our Rosé Cru comes in an elegant collectible wine bottle with a signature rose stopper. About JNSQ: WHAT IS JNSQ? There is a lovely French colloquialism used to describe someone so unique and exceptional that no words exist to sufficiently capture her essence. “She's got a certain je ne sais quoi,” one might say, in the hopes it explains that extraordinary ability someone has to rise above all the rest. THE WINE The phrase "je ne sais quoi" was the inspiration for JNSQ, a superlative new wine made from select California grapes and crafted in the style of the best French Rosés and the brightest Sauvignon Blancs. The result is a taste so unique and surprising that you'll be at a loss for words to capture what elevates these wines into a class by themselves. THE BOTTLE The JNSQ bottle is just as distinctive as the wine inside. Fashioned by the finest French glass designer and reminiscent of a luxury perfume bottle, JNSQ is topped off by a resealable stopper adorned with our signature sculpted rose or grape, depending on the varietal. Once the wine inside has been enjoyed, this elegant bottle becomes a keepsake, ideal for displaying fragrances or fresh blooms. Of course, you'll find countless other ways to repurpose this unique work of art. THE EXPERIENCE From afar, it may seem like JNSQ is an enigma, easy to appreciate but hard to understand. But there is one way to truly get what makes JNSQ indescribably perfect for jazz in the park, a girl's night in, or a Sunday brunch: taste it. Only then will you experience how extraordinary a wine with that certain je ne sais quoi can truly be. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/support

Erik Miller from Kokomo Winery visits Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country today. Kokomo Winery is named after Erik's hometown in Indiana. Kokomo started in 2004 and Erik was working at a winery in Dry Creek. He is now up to his 17th harvest. He got a business degree from Purdue University in Indiana. He learned winemaking in the cellar, with some classes at UC Davis (but not a winemaking degree). He also works with an assistant winemaker, Jeremy Parsons. He has a chemistry degree and is "a perfect balance for my artistic ADD." Dan discovered Kokomo when he tasted a Kokomo Rosé in 2008. It was his first Rosé, from a vineyard where he grows Grenache. His Rosé is "bone dry, or close to bone dry." Erik likes the color of his Rosé, it is a very pale salmon-like color. It got people to realize it is dry, just by the color. They are growing the grapes intentionally to make Rosé and as soon as they pick the grapes, the key decisions start. Dan says that this grape makes the best Rosés. Most of the great French Rosés are make of Grenache at least in part. They taste a Sauvignon Blanc, held in Acacia barrels. Erik says they are good for texture, not for aromatics. Dan says this one is not soft, but crisp and dry. He has seen a lot of sweet SVs but you taste the fact that this is a dry wine. It would go very well with fish. They pick the grapes in two halves. The first harvest is more acidic and the second is fuller, richer with more tropical flavors. This is what Dan means by the strategy that begins at the harvest. Since they manage about 260 acres, they have a full time crew, which makes it easier to plan this kind of harvest. Next they taste a Muscat. They have 3/4 acre of this grape. He designed it for a late harvest. in 2017 they bottled it as a dry Muscat Blanc, which is rare. The four noble Alsatian varieties, Gewürtz, Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Muscat and Erik thinks they are great with spicy foods. Dan suggests it would be good for mild Indian curries, but a hotter curry needs a sweeter wine. Erik also brought a sparkling wine. Steve says it has a strong bouquet. Dan says it has a delicate and subtle yeast component. It is not overpowering, as it often can be. It would benefit from 2-3 years in the cellar. Dan says that sparkling wine would lose its bubbles if decanted. Erik remembers having fried chicken at a gas station which they enjoyed with a sparkling wine.
