William Weese, Tom & Dan. William Weese and Evan Merriam of Merriam Vineyards are both guests on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon, Dan Berger and Harry Duke. William's titles are Winemaker and Shepherd. Evan is the newly appointed CEO, having succeeded his father in the role. Evan's father Peter founded the winery and the last time he was on this show was this episode of September 22, 2021. Tom Simoneau and Merriam Vineyards founder Peter Merriam both come from the great state of Maine and Tom tells the story of how he found a vineyard for his friend Peter in 2000. Merriam Vineyards then started making wine in 2008. Tom makes his wine at Peter's facility too. William Weese, Winemaker & Shepherd At Merriam Vineyards, William Weese also carries the title Shepherd and he describes how that happened. He decided to build on the biodynamic approach to making high quality wine. At one time they brought 400 sheep into the vineyard so they would mow down the cover crop. They did 15 acres in under a week. The sheep deposit natural urea in their urine which saves them from having to purchase fertilizer for that. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. When Peter bought the vineyard, it was already producing. So their first harvest came in at the same time Tom was making some of his own home production in the same place. Merriam is not in the coolest part of Russian River but the fog keeps the vines cool enough to make great fruit. Dan's Cellar Dweller of the Week Dan Berger has also brought one of his cellar wines to taste today, an 2017 Argentine Chardonnay called Bodega Aniello, from Patagonia. Next they taste a 2021 Danielle Fumé Blanc, estate grown at Merriam Vineyards. The grapes are Sauvignon Blanc fermented in some new French oak. Tom says it has the best of all worlds, as Chardonnays go. Dan Berger detects a trace of quince. Tom and Evan. Ten Varietals Merriam Vineyards grow ten varietals now. They just harvested their first estate Chardonnay. It's called "Undisclosed" because they get fruit from many local growers, not all of whom allow their name to be attached to the wine. The next wine tasted is Diana's Vineyard 2020 Pinot Noir. Diana is Evan's mother. They planted these grapes in 2011. There are 5 different clones in Diana's Vineyard, and they try to keep them separate all the way through production in small batches. William tells about how he handles each one differently, including individual choices of individual barrels. Dan Berger says it is very fresh and young and has potential for aging.

Dan Berger & Kerry Damskey Williamson Wines winemaker Kerry Damskey is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. The last time he was on CWC was this episode of March 21, 2018. Kerry is an independent winemaking consultant with clients around the world under the name Terroir Artisan Wines. Before we begin, Dan Berger has brought another Cellar Dweller to discover and discuss, a 2016 Tercos and comes from Argentina. The grape is Torrantes. It was really floral and tropical when he first tasted it and now it is drier. The location is at the foot of the Andes in the Mendoza region. When Dan visited there, it was in the middle of their summer and there was snow on the distant Andean peaks. The aromatic profile of this varietal is roses, citrus and melon. It was not supposed to be aged this long but Dan lost it in the cellar. The importer is in San Francisco so this wine is more available in the Bay Area than anywhere else. Williamson Wines The Williamson winery was founded in 1980. The founders Don and Bill Williamson are the great grand-children of immigrants transported to Australia in 1788. Their home vineyard is in Dry Creek but they source fruit from all over Sonoma County. Kerry's first vintage for Williamson was 2006. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. Kerry Damsey grew up in Berkeley and went to UC Davis for viticulture and enology. He worked overseeing a large winery in Lodi, then moved to San Diego County where he met Dan Berger. He was the winemaker in a new winemaking area outside San Diego County that his wife said looked like the moon. Gamay was Dan's favorite wine that Kerry makes and Kerry is making Gamay again now, with his son. Williamson Wines has a tasting room for the public and another one that is exclusively for their reserve wines. They are in Healdsburg on Matheson Street. Tasting Williamson Wines The first wine is a 2021 Pinot Noir, called Passion. The fruit comes predominately from the Vine Hill area of Russian River Valley. Its typicity is rose petal flavors. It is very young but the ripe cherry flavors are prominent. Dan thinks it will be better after a couple of years. 2021 was a perfect vintage. There were no fires, a drought year, so a small crop. It's Pinot Noir heaven there, near Dehlinger, Merry Edwards and Emeritus (and Balletto). “Vine Hill Road is probably right at the top.” They do a sparkling Malbec and a sparkling Shiraz. Dan explains that the tannins in red wines make them difficult to make sparkling. Kerry explains how he does it. The Williamson tasting room has mostly red wines but they also do some Riesling, Charnonnay and Gewurtztraminer. See the website for the latest offerings.  They do a seated tasting with wine and selected cheeses and food bites. Tastings begin every 90 minutes from 11am-5pm daily. They also have an unusual selection of fine cheeses. They also taste a wine called Ravish, from 2014. This would be a wine from the reserve tasting room. It is a Bordeaux blend mostly Merlot, with some Cabernet Franc. Appellation is Dry Creek Valley. It is a dark color but softer with lower tannins.

Dan and Dan, Berger and Barwick. Dan Barwick, winemaker at Trecini Winery, is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon, Harry Duke and Dan Berger. He has been a guest on this show a few other times, most recently on January 12, 2022, and before that on this episode of July 21, 2021. Harrod's of London Dan Barwik's first job was at Harrod's in London. At the age of 19 he worked in the food halls, starting in the meat department. From there he worked in management and in the wine department during a promotion of French products. His job was to make sure each tasting had the right wine, glasses etc. so he got to taste all the wine and there were hundreds. Dan Barwick has worked in Sonoma County at many wineries including Matanzas Creek, Ferrari-Carano andParadise Ridge. Later he started Trecini with John Vicini in 1999. Dan Berger admires their wine because they are focused on good acidity. Dan's Cellar Dweller of the Week Dan Berger's cellar wine this week is a 2007 Merlot from Twomey. Merlot got such a bad vibe from that movie but some Merlot if it was grown and made right is as good as anything else. The secret to this is 13.6 ABV. The higher alcohol wines don't age as well. It still has vibrant fruit and the acid is still there. Dan Barwik reminds us that the acidity comes from picking at the right time, once ripe but not too ripe. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. Trecini also makes some wine in Italy and today's show features some of those Italian Trecini wines that Dan Barwik makes. They begin with a Sardinian Vermentino from 2020. Vermentin0 is a crisp, bright, refreshing wine, that can be still or slightly bubbly. They sell it at the tasting room in downtown Santa Rosa located at 684 Seventh Street, on the corner of Seventh and Humboldt.  They are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday for tastings and walk-in retail purchases.  The Trecini California wines are some of the best value locally since they own all their own vineyards locally. They have a wonderful lineup of Californian and Italian wines, says Dan Berger. They have collected a lot of gold medals. These wines have delicacy and go well with food. The grapes are picked early enough to save the varietal character and acidity. The more it ripens, the more homogeneous the wine becomes. Join the Rodney Strong mailing list to receive special offers, information on new releases, and more. Sardinia (La Sardegna, in Italian) Sardinia is located in the Mediterranean west of Italy, south of Corsica and well north of Sicily. It is one of the 20 Regions of Italy. It resembles the American south-west so much that it was used as background for all of those "spaghetti westerns" of the 1960s that launched Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach. The vines have ancient rootstocks common only in the Mediterranean. It is very hot and arid. There is beautiful coastline, excellent fishing, snorkeling, swimming and sailing, and also has some very high-end ports and resorts up in the northeast corner. Next they taste a Moscato, which is sweet and usually served as a dessert wine. The label says 5% although it tastes more like 10%. If you like sweet wines, this is delicious, has good vibrancy and bright flavor.

Greg Graziano joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on this encore presentation. The CWC folks are gone fishin' this week and there is no new show for today, Sept. 7, 2022. So this podcast episode is a repeat of a show that originally aired on KSRO on Dec. 30, 2020, featuring Greg Graziano, the winemaker for the Graziano Family of Wines.  Greg Graziano, winemaker for The Graziano Family of Wines the joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country today. His grandfather, Vincenzo Graziano, landed on Ellis Island in 1907 and worked his way across the country to Mendocino where he bought 100 acres with his future brother-in-law and began planting grapes, two years before Prohibition. During Prohibition they did whatever they could to survive, selling what wine was legal to sell. Then they sold grapes to Gallo and Italian Swiss Colony, and also Sebastiani and Parducci. Then the family started Mendocino Vineyards in the early 1950s. Gallo and Italian Swiss Colony bought most of the bulk wines then. Later, it was purchased and renamed Cresta Blanca. Then Constellation bought it and changed it to Dunwood, which never took off. Greg started making wine in 1977 and started Milano winery with his friend Jim Maloney. In 1985 he went to work for La Crema and took over in 1986 and was winemaker until 1990. They made 50,000 cases per year then, and now it's maybe 2 million, so it's a different thing now. The Jackson Family owns it now. They grow around 30 different grape varieties. He studied at UC Davis and did not graduate, but he explains how he knows what he needs to know. He learned by working for some really great winemakers. Dan Berger appreciates that they make wine from so many varietals from Italy and elsewhere that nobody else is working with. They have a 2019 Monte Volpe called Vesuvius from Potter Valley. The wine is a blend of grapes that grow around Vesuvius, including Coda di Volpe, Fiano, Greco di Tufo, Trebbiano and others. The vineyard is at a higher elevation so it is cooler so the grapes have higher acidity. The different varieties in this wine are usually never all together. It is very complex and rich, but not oaky. “The fruit is barking at me in this, it's wonderful.” – Steve Jaxon Greg mentions that they are using screw caps now. It was fresh and young in 2018 and now (2020) it still has yet to develop its characteristics. Next they taste the 2017 St. Gregory Pinot Meunier. Dan mentions that there is more Pinot Meunier planted in France in Champagne than actual Champagne grapes. Dan calls it a white wine with color. Greg explains how to identify it against ordinary Pinot Noir by looking at the growing tips of the vine and underneath the leaf, they are covered with tiny white hairs. (The Munier in French is a miller, who gets covered with white dust by milling grain.) It's very floral. They're probably the oldest producer of this in the state. Dan and Darryl. Dehlinger Winery winemaker Darryl Miller is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger today. The Dehlinger Winery vineyard is located in the area of Goldridge soil in the western part of the Russian River Valley AVA, not far from Sebastopol. The last time Darryl was on California Wine Country was this episode of August 26, 2020 and Eva Dehlinger was also on this show in October 2018, on this episode. The Dehlinger family originally purchased the property in 1972, began planting grapes in '75 and the first release was ‘78. The  vineyard in the heart of the Russian River is in the area of Goldridge soil. The area was planted mostly to cherries and apples. Dan Berger's cellar wine of the week is an 11-year-old dry Riesling that Dan says has interesting lemon flavors... The secret to this wine is that it is really dry. The winemaker is Louisa Rose, a friend of Dan's. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. Two Pinot Noirs and a Chardonnay They taste the 2017 Dehlinger Altamont Pinot Noir, which is the current release, which is remarkable because other current releases are around 2020 now. This is a very limited release, to the wine club and at the. According to Dan it is a classic example of what Russian River can do. Some of the vines are 40 years old. The vineyard has a combination of Swan, Martini and 988 clones. It has Russian River character of Raspberry, strawberry and black cherry. They make another Russian River Pinot Noir called Goldridge, based on that soil, which is more forward and heavier. The Alatamont is brighter and a lighter color than usual. Dan Berger's Cellar Dweller of the Week. The next wine is the 2019 Dehlinger Chardonnay. With every bottling, they taste back 10 vintages. The 2012 was “just beautiful.” This Chardonnay displays a good balance between richness and freshness. They only have about eight acres of Chardonnay, which has been replanted in small blocks. This is all Wente clone, with small berries and therefore crisp acidity. It takes a lot of patience and attention to make a wine this bright and clear without filtering it. Rodney Strong & Davis Bynum Click the logo to visit our sponsor Rodney Strong for the latest on the 2022 Summer Concert series. Darryl Miller tells about how he started working in wine, starting as a salesperson with many prestigious brands. Eventually he founded a brokerage, which he worked for and sold off.  Dehlinger Vineyard is located at Vine Hill Rd. and Guerneville Rd. They are open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday by appointment. It's a working winer Finally, the last tasting is a Cabernet Sauvignon. Hardly anyone else in this cool area grows this grape. It has a beautiful aroma of black olive, a characteristic of Cab from a cool region. Most people will never smell or taste this kind of wine. It will hold up for 20 years.

Rosé Season is here at Bottle Barn and Barry Herbst is here to tell all about it on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. First, Dan Berger's Cellar Dweller wine this week is a 2010 Chardonnay from New Zealand, from Peregrine, located in central Otago. Michelle Richardson was the winemaker there for that vintage. “Very much alive, still,” says Barry Herbst at the first taste. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. The season of Rosé wine is here and Barry Herbst describes the Rosé situation at Bottle Barn. A lot of producers did not make Rosé last year. Some other Rosés that they have had in stock actually improve with age. So they may not have quite as many choices as in recent years but the selection is still vast. About 65-70% of their Rosés are from local producers. They taste a Rosé from Fred Scherrer that is delicious, “up there with the very best of them,” says Dan Berger. A Quiviera winery Rosé is the next tasting. It is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, classic Rhone varietals. It is a little lighter in color, and also a little bit coppery in color. It is also a 2021. It has a little more Grenache aromatics and fruit components. Dan thinks it would go well with a sausage pizza. It sells for $17.99 and won Double Gold for Rosé at the Press Democrat competition. Rosé used to be more limited to summer time but Bottle Barn keeps a good selection of Rosé year-round now. Their third tasting is a Grenache Rosé by Leo Steen, in the Healdsburg area. The grapes come from Sonoma Valley, a little more inland. This one is dry, made of 100% Grenache. It's unusual because Grenache is hard to get. Dan Berger notes that Grenache grapes are much in demand. This is because of its aromatic component. Barry Herbst notes that a lot of the winning Rosés are from Sangiovese or Grenache. It has cranberry-like notes. The Grenache Rosé comes across more structured and astringent than a Rosé made with Grenache without the other varietals in the blend. Bottle Barn has resumed in-store tastings, in the afternoons and evenings. Check Bottle Barn dot com for up-to-the-minute details. Alexander Valley Vineyards Rosé of Sangiovese: Wow! Now they have the Alexander Valley Vineyards Rosé of Sangiovese. The nose on this one is amazing. Sangiovese produces aromatically interesting reds, but in a real Mediterranean climate as they have in Alexander Valley it is ideal. This sells for $13.99, which is incredible for a wine this good. It is darker pink, but richer in body and not sweet. It has structural balance and would go with a wide variety of food flavors. This week, Bottle Barn has won Best Wine Retailer in the Press Democrat Readers' Choice Awards, for the umpteenth time in a row. The final tasting is a 2020 100% Carignane Rosé from Mendocino County, Bartolome Vineyard. It's gorgeous, says Dan Berger. Barry Herbst says Delve Wine Company is a co-op next to bottle barn, called Punchdown Cellars. Some small producers making 50-80 cases can do their production work there. It's earthy and “kind of barnyardy” says Barry.

GLF Wines owner Greg La Follette ("la-FOLL-et") is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger, to talk about his label GLF Wines, and more. The Drive co-host Harry Duke is also in the studio. Greg has been on CWC a few times before. The first was this episode on April 12, 2017. We heard about his previous label Alquimista Cellars in his next episode on November 21, 2018, then again on June 17, 2020. Dan Berger's Cellar Dweller of the Week This is a six-year-old French Rosé from Côtes-du-Rhone that Dan kept as an experiment. Usually he would not keep a Rosé this long, but it was so good when it was young he kept one just to see what would happen. It is mainly Grenache and it is still flavorful although a bit past its prime. Dan calls it “toasty” and remembers it had more peach and dried peach flavors before. Another unusual aspect is its copper color, another product of aging. Riesling is Dan Berger's favorite variety and this year he is actually making some, and Greg La Follette is his winemaking consultant in the project. He is getting three tons of Riesling grapes from a grower in Mendocino. He also made some Cabernet Sauvignon, called Berger, which was not for sale. Bottle Barn has a vast selection of great wines, from everywhere, some of which you have never heard of, at bargain prices. Dan spent some time at Bottle Barn today and gives an extensive report on their vast selection. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. Greg La Follette arrives Greg La Follette has arrived, with a bandaged finger. His new brand is GLF, Greg La Follette wines and he also has Marchelle Wines to specialize in small scale production from old vines. He begins his story, “Well, I'm a farmer.” (That's true, but he is also a scientist.) He has grown grapes on five continents and consulted to many winemakers around the world. Greg was first a student and then a teacher at UC Davis. Retired from that career, he is now devoted to his own projects and to being a grandfather. He worked for Zelma Long at Simi and worked with Mary Ann Graf there, back when they were all laying the foundations for the present day stature of wine country. Alquimista Cellars did not make it through the pandemic. (That was his previous label, which he talked about in his previous CWC episodes.) The wines went mostly to Michelin-ranked restaurants, with Chardonnays starting at $60 and Pinots from $75 to $120. Their bottled wines went to his partner and he kept the barrel wines, which he has labeled under GLF now. The GLF wines sell for $36 on the website, sometimes less in a couple of Florida-based discount retailers. Greg tells about having been André Tchelistcheff's last pupil. His present GLF brand is dedicated to making premium wine accessible. Ever since he was a wine student he wanted to make wines that people could afford. His GLF and Marchelle brands both accomplish that. Marchelle is devoted to ancient vines. They are available at the website marchellewines.com.

Thirty years later, Childress super-fan and up and coming comic artist Whitney decides to enroll in an art school that occupies the exact building where Childress died. In an attempt to make "THE ULTIMATE MONSTER" she summons the same demon, and it eats its way through the small group of art students who are living in the house.  Join Matt and Tristan as they dwell in the cellar that is...Cellar Dweller.

In this, the longest episode of the show to date, we're on to the letter E and, since Producer Chris feels like he hasn't had enough say in the movie selections, we let him make the call on our picks this week. Mastermind Dan is a generous overlord and promised to respect, but definitely still mock, Producer Chris's choices. So, in an effort to really find the polar opposite ends of the movie spectrum, we're going to either watch the super goofy Rodney Dangerfield try to overcome his bad habits to get his mother-in-law's inheritance or we're going to watch the incredibly serious and dramatic, depressingly uninspired sex fantasy fulfillments of Tom Cruise in Eyes Wide Shut. Just George (yes, that's his preferred monicker) is offended that Chris would choose a sexually charged movie after Chris and Dan mercilessly mocked his choice of Barbarella. Dan has a contest idea, and we read our first ever Cellar Dweller email! All in all, you'll be amazed at how quickly an hour and a half will go by while you listen to three dummies make fun of each other and shoot the shit about movies, life, and podcasting!

Cellar Dweller Or Action Takers #IYP This one hit close to home in today's talk, I see the sadness or maybe a better word would be the overwhelmingness that seem's to haunt the 2 sorta relatives (or close family friends) that stopped by for a chat. They are getting up into the years where I think that they are really starting to think about and maybe even look forward to the retirement day's, excited to just relax and have no agenda or time table to follow. Yet there is some massive issue's they have self imposed on themselves by allowing their children (specifically this one child, well adult around 30 years old) to live off them unconditionally. Not the child's fault is it? Or is it? Here is the fascinating thing (and if we listen, I mean really listen instead of just waiting to reply all the time to be heard there are so many gems of knowledge that relate to our own lives. Our own lesson's to learn, the mirror I always speak of). So the amount of stress they as the parents take on to continue to provide for this child is pretty massive. The work load they impose on themselves to continue to provide for this child is massive as well. Flip side of that, the child is either unaware of this, or does not care about this, or just assume's this is the way it is and does not know any different. Either way his life is not really effected...or is it? Never had a job, never had a girl, never tried for anything, no goals, no hopes, no aspirations, no anything. Just existing and is that really life? So who's fault is it? Or is there fault, does either side even see an issue? Again I just listen, the father says to me "I'll never be able to retire". Although at this point that seem's to be what they want. Why can't they retire? The unhappiness of not following his heart is a massive issue. The mother says how she is worried that her son will never find a women because he has poor social skills. Again l listen and because of this (so called issue) she coddles him even more to make up for the hurt he may one day experience. Who's issues are these, and how were these issues created? From those on the outside looking in it seems so easy to see and find all the problems and answer's. Yet when you are in the eye of the storm (meaning your own life and issues's) they are not so easy to point out because we don't have a different point of view, yet if someone on the outside looks at our problems, well then they would say the same thing. So through what we claim as our definition of love for someone else, we cut off a life of possibility by trying to protect them from the big bad world out there. Yet by doing this very act we try to play God over them, we are not God, we are not the Universe so we have to let this control go, or we not only cause massive harm to that someone else, we also cause massive harm to ourselves by taking on the responsibility of God. As everyone knows, beautiful female artists want nothing more than to rekindle the EC Comics art style and draw panel after panel of women in skimpy clothes and painfully obvious cold rooms terrorized by demonic hordes.... Right? Don't tell us that CELLAR DWELLER (1988) lied to us! Don't blink or you'll miss our boy Jeffy Combs doing his best Patrick Bateman impression in the first 5 minutes of the movie, but if you do, you can kind of fast-forward all the pointless character development in the middle and just get to the good stuff - a doe-eyed rubber suit monster wrecking all these art school weirdos' days and munching on their body parts. There's also a sweet decapitation, so you know your HMN boys are having fun on this week's episode. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

Buildings were built, in the beginning, everyone knows, to hold the dead down. Every cellar floor was built over the ceiling of something else. Now cellars are used for all sorts of purposes. Roots. Paint cans. Pantries. Workshops. Other. There's a rhyme someone invented for children. It's chanted in nurseries in the Banisher's town. The nurseries are upholstered in chintz, and the walls are padded, as though they're asylums and the babies inmates. | Copyright 2015 by Maria Dahvana Headley. Narrated by Stefan Rudnicki. First up, the two drool over Barbara Crampton and the gothic exploitation of Castle Freak. And, as if one freakish monster in the basement wasn't enough, Devil Dinosaur Jr. gives us a Stay Scary on the Charles Band-produced Cellar Dweller! Of course, we have some kickass tunes to play as well: "Castlestorm" by ASG, "Freak" by The Meteors, "Snaggletooth" by Motorhead, and "Sub-Basement" by Pentagram.
