Brett is the President & CEO of Sovereign Brands, a family-owned, international wine & spirits company headquartered in New York, which sells its portfolio of products in more than 100 countries globally. Brett and his company have developed some of the world's hottest brands, including the smash-hit Luc Belaire line of French sparkling wines, which has earned global acclaim for its exquisite taste and striking package, and is the fastest-growing French sparkling wine in the world. Sovereign's portfolio also includes Bumbu, a craft rum from Barbados that ranks among the world's most critically acclaimed rums and is already the best-selling brand in the U.S. premium rum category, as well as McQueen and the Violet Fog, a small-batch gin from Jundiai, Brazil, which was awarded a 93-point score by Wine Enthusiast. Sovereign's newest release, Villon, is revolutionizing the cognac category. Brett's past brands include Armand de Brignac (“Ace of Spades”) Champagne and D'Ussé Cognac, two of the most successful brands in the super-premium Champagne and premium Cognac categories, respectively. Together with a proven ability to create powerful, resonant brands, the international partnerships he has created with some of the world's finest wine and spirits producers have given Sovereign Brands an extraordinary and unique portfolio of wines and spirits. The international partnership, Mr. Berish, has created some of the world's finest wine and spirit and has given sovereign brands an extraordinary and unique portfolio of wines and spirits. Don't miss this episode of Making Bank with Brett Berish! (2:05) Background Brett's dad was in the liquor industry for 45 years at the same company as kids. That's all he talked about. His brothers and him would sit around the dinner table listening to their dad talk about. That's what inspired him to go into the liquor industry. He loved it and has a tremendous passion for the industry. (3:23) People Build Brands People build brands. At the end of the day, you have to find people who believe in what you're doing and you build your army. Getting people to embrace brands is the key. You got to get in their soul and it's by getting out there and talking to them. (4:57) Brand Connections Try to get people to be aware of the brand, and if it's a good brand, they'll talk about it. It's called organic brand building because it's not in a transaction. It's a relationship. Make it real. Make it authentic. To everybody you will ever work with, they should be your friends because of the brands. It's not because you saw some data. (9:48) Brand Story “In the 14th century, merchants would travel to the West Indies and they didn't like the taste of traditional rum. They'd call it grog and they'd blend their own out of it. And what that was referred to was bumbu. We brought that brand back to life and now this brand has eight different sugar canes from eight different countries and we bond it and distill it in Barbados, which is the original rum island. And we don't have to filter the water because it's all natural and it's got authenticity and it's real.” (11:49) Secrets To Success “I don't have a black box. I think it's, I think our success is blood, sweat, and tears and we're all in and it's night and day. It's constantly educating and constantly talking to people. The package has got to stand out. The name's has to be different. The look and feel has to be different. It needs to have a story. You need to have a beautiful package.” (13:41) Taste Profile “We created this blend. It took three years to create, but it's wild. It's specifically different from everybody else. And if I can achieve what the profile I'm looking for, I think I'm the average consumer. I think I'm now giving myself to somebody who wants to try something different and something unique in a different profile, something completely different.” (16:37) Biggest Challenges You can't put pressure on a brand. You have to let it grow at its own pace. The biggest challenge will be having to have patience for it to mature. If you rush it, it will not work and you will end up falling short. (18:40) Key Tips You have to trust your instincts. Don't assume everyone is smarter than you or that everyone knows better than you. At the end of the day, if you're going to jump into a business, it has to be your decision. You can take people's input, but trust your gut. He's one of the most successful brand creators in the wine and spirits industry, but, until recently, Brett Berish avoided the limelight. Twenty-two years ago, Berish, whose family has long ties to the spirits business, launched Sovereign Brands, a brand development company that's responsible for the massively successful super-premium Champagne label, Ace of Spades, and premium cognac D'usse. Hip-hop icon Jay-Z acquired the former in 2014 and also bought a stake in D'usse, which is now co-owned by rum giant Bacardi. Sovereign's reputation for creating winning concepts continued with Luc Belaire, a line of French sparkling wines that, according to measured sales data, is the fastest growing premium sparkling wine brand in the U.S. and the fastest-growing French sparkling wine in the world. The company also owns Bumbu, a critically acclaimed craft rum from Barbados and the best-selling brand in the U.S. premium rum category, as well as McQueen and the Violet Fog, a small-batch gin from Jundiai, Brazil. Despite his remarkable success, Berish's most valuable lessons came from failure. Reflecting upon the gravely challenging times during his career has motivated him to become a more visible presence in the spirits industry with the aim of mentoring and advising young entrepreneurs about what it takes to persevere amid constant setbacks and struggles. In the following interview, Berish chronicled his journey as an entrepreneur, including what he learned from his failed vodka brand, why he urges entrepreneurs to trust their instincts and how innovation and category fit into his philosophy as a brand creator. He also spoke about how he aligned with iconic hip-hop artists, including Rick Ross, to promote and grow Sovereign-owned brands, and why he recently decided to partner with one of the largest wine and spirits companies in the world. Show notes: 0:42: Interview: Brett Berish, Co-Founder, Sovereign Brands – Berish spoke with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif about his family's lineage in beverage alcohol, his vision of creating 100% agave-based tequila while in high school, the inspiration behind Sovereign and the origins of its name and why he believes the company's focus has remained the same since its inception. He also discussed why he sold a minority stake in Sovereign to Pernod Ricard, explained why not trusting his instincts led to the demise of his first brand, why hearing “no” motivates him, the importance of establishing authenticity in celebrity partnerships and why he doesn't have a specific strategy when it comes to retail channels. Later, he spoke about why he “loves” failure, how he overcame significant financial struggles early into his career and why transparency is the key to communication with his team. Brands in this episode: Ace of Spades, D'Usse, Luc Bellaire, Bumbu, McQueen and The Violet Fog

Neil Berish ('23, ME) has taken what he's learned at Kettering and turned his hobby into a profitable business and Co-op opportunity. Within nine months of creating a website, he and his friend have purchased machinery and expanded from Neil's garage into a small warehouse space. Monique Berish grew up in remarkably rough circumstances that included living in an area riddled with crime and poverty, dealing with her parents' mental health struggles, their divorce, and a sudden cross-country move. All of this lead her to alcohol abuse and later, alcohol dependence as well as sexual relationships and other self-destructive behaviors to cope with the pain. Eventually, Monique found the Gospel of Jesus Christ and completely changed her life. In the episode, she tells us the story of her journey and what lead her to chronicle it all in her new book. Monique is so candid. Her story is one of true redemption and faith.

Interview with Motl Didner, Artistic Director of the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, Director of The Sorceress (די כּישוף־מאַכערין), and Associate Director and Dialect Coach for the smash-hit production of Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish (פֿידלער אויפֿן דאַך). As Yiddish coach for Fiddler, Didner was the main person responsible for training the mostly non-Yiddish-speaking cast to mount the USA's first-ever Yiddish-language production of Fiddler on the Roof, resulting in a smash hit (winner of Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Lucille Lortel awards) that is still running off-Broadway at Stage42 (info: https://fiddlernyc.com). The Sorceress (Di Kishef-Makherin), which is being presented by the Folksbiene for a limited run in Yiddish with English and Russian subtitles, is an operetta written by Avrom Goldfadden, considered the father of modern Jewish theatre, in 1878. It is one of the earliest works of Yiddish theater and the first formal Yiddish theatrical production introduced in America by the celebrated Thomashefsky family. It's being performed through Dec 29 2019 at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Lower Manhattan -- info here: https://nytf.org/the-sorceress Interview with Barry Goldstein, whose Yiddish translations of The Wind in the Willows (די װינט אין די װערבעס) and The Colour of Magic (דער קאָליר פֿון כּישוף) were recently published. Goldstein is active in the Yiddish literary scene, both at home in Boston and internationally: besides his translations, Goldstein was Associate Editor of the very highly regarded Comprehensive Yiddish-English Dictionary (Indiana University Press, 2013), and his Yiddish writing has appeared in the Yiddish literary journal Yidishland (ייִדישלאַנד), as well as others, in recent years. For info and links to all of Goldstein's translations, visit his web site: https://bgoldstein.org/ Goldstein's interview is by Sholem Beinfeld, a regular contributor to the Yiddish Voice, co-Editor in Chief of the Comprehensive Yiddish-English Dictionary, and Professor of History, Emeritus, Washington University, St. Louis. Not just another collection of rehashed police stories with shootouts, car chases, and damsels in distress, Reflections from the Pit, contains individual, quirky, off-center characters. The stories focus on basic character flaws while dealing with social issues of the day: racism, hangings from police cruisers, sexism, affirmative action, prejudice, drug-dealing cops and corruption, homelessness, segregation, and police brutality. Berish uses his intimate knowledge of "the Pit" to bring these tales alive. This book pulls no punches; it shows you the dark side of police work: the good, the bad and the ugly (warts and all), both the humor and the tragedy. These reflections, covering more than one hundred years of history, give one pause for thought and a peek into the human swamp of life in "the Pit." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/burl-barer/support

American history is all about movement: geographical, cultural, ideological. Economic depression and war make the 1930s and ’40s a dramatic example of this movement. In Lonesome Roads and Streets of Dreams: Place, Mobility, and Race in Jazz of the 1930s and ’40s (University of Chicago, 2012), Andrew S. Berish explores the flourishing big band dance music of these decades as it reflected and influenced movement with the United States. Conceptually, he examines the amorphous ideas of space and place, and the ways dance band jazz was defined by and helped create the places and spaces of mid-twentieth century America. Empirically, Berish’s focus is on the music of specific musicians and bands (Jan Garber, Charlie Barnet, Duke Ellington, Charlie Christian), the performances of their music (“Avalon,” “Make Believe Ballroom,” “Air-Conditioned Jungle”) and the places in which the performances took place (Casino Ballroom, Meadowbrook Inn, Chicago Civic Opera House, the road). America’s movement through war, depression, and racial integration are at the core of Berish’s analysis of big band jazz, and his detailed cultural and ethnomusicological analyses support his reasoning that music can tell us a lot about the social conditions of our times.
