The Chelsea FanCast looks back, season by season, to 50 Years of Chelsea history from 1970 to the present day.Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan to look back at the 1998-99 season. This season saw Chelsea compete in the Champions' League for the first time. With Gianluca Vialli retiring, Chris Sutton was bought from Blackburn Rovers for £10 million and it was hoped that he would provide the goals to mount a challenge on the elusive Premier League title and deep in to Europe. With the addition of French World Cup winning Captain, Didier Deschamps, Chelsea had a squad full of foreign world class talent and many believed they were set up to do well. The season began with a 4-0 rout of Sunderland and Gus Poyet's stunning goal which augered well.In the first group stage of the Champions' League, Chelsea proved they were at home in Europe's elite competition with impressive draws against AC Milan, home and away and a staggering 5-0 away victory over Galatasary. But Vialli was finding squad rotation difficult and after the highs of european competition, League form suffered with poor results against Watford, Liverpool, Everton, Leeds and most notably Arsenal at home thanks to a 15 minute hat-trick by Kanu.At least Chelsea beat European Champions and treble winners Man Utd 5-0 and even the out of form and out of his depth Chris Sutton scored. In part two we continue the season from January all the way to Wembley via the Camp Nou... Away goals don't count any more, that's what we're told. So what impact will it have as Galatasaray heading into Champions League qualifiers this early in the season? A trip to the group stages would mean massive money...This week on the podcast we're wrapping up pre-season - just about anyway - but we're taking a bit of time to analyse our squad and options before kicking off the league proper next week. From tactical decisions at Galatasary to figuring out the myth that is Mesut Ozil at Fenerbahce to lop-sided friendlies, lack of squad depth in certain roles and the murky mire that is the summer transfer window (and why nobody wants to leave our clubs and yet nobody wants to buy anyone from our clubs), there's plenty to mull over this week.To all who took the time out to join us last week - maybe even as your first time listening to the podcast - thanks a million for making it our MOST listened-to episode since we've started the podcast.Grab a fresh helping of the podcast every Friday via Scoreline.ie or wherever you do your podcast listening. #121. This week on the nation's favourite United podcast* we look back on victory over Southampton at St Mary's before the international break. Did Robin van Persie's hat-trick get United out of jail free after an omnishambles of a defensive performance? We talk international football, with a large proportion of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad away with their national sides over the last week. England won one and drew one, but there was greater success for some Reds. Also on the show - we talk Wayne Rooney's book, Cristiano Ronaldo's sadness, take your questions, talk Anderson's food habits, ponder the merits of Eric Cantona's collar, give away a Paul Scholes shirt, and preview the week ahead with Wigan Athletic and Galatasary visiting Old Trafford.*Well, in the top 10 at least! No Question About That is available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Music and all good podcast apps.
