Welcome back to Part 2 of our conversation with none other than Jay Papasan and Gary Keller! We do a deep dive into managing: How do we turn on self-discipline and accountability to ensure that we have success, and then how do we manage our time such that we get the most out of it.If you're looking for a shiny, new-fangled answer, you won't get it here. Gary and Jay drive home the tried-and-true steps: goals, plans, actions, results, accountability, and then do it all over again. Again and again. We also get into “the path is in the math” and “win the morning to win the day.”Then, in true Gary Keller fashion, we talk about books. Lots of books. Fiction and nonfiction. Check the Resources section below for a list and links. If you've ever wanted to spend time in Gary Keller's library, this is your chance to be there virtually. We continue our conversations with neurodivergent entrepreneurs by welcoming Sam Handfield-Jones to NAKED. Sam is an angel investor, former founder, disability and inclusion advocate, and passionate about sharing his experiences of living and working with ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. We talk to Sam about creating safe and inclusive work environments for individuals with ADHD, his own entrepreneurial journey, and the impact ADHD has on his life - positively and in the challenges he's faced. Sam is an incredibly positive person, and what is impressive is his openness to share how ADHD manifests in his daily life; how it affected him while building a business; and the vulnerable conversations he has had with his team. He's not afraid to talk about the difficult moments - loneliness, fear, isolation - all in an effort to help people better understand what living with ADHD means. Specific topics covered in this episode include: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and the impact of an entrepreneur's life; Living with ADHD, the positives and the challenging; Fears including the fear of death and the pointlessness of life; The role of therapy in healing. In addition, we discuss the following questions: How do you create an inclusive work environment for people with ADHD? How do you talk to people who might not understand? Who do you turn to for support and help? What is the interplay between neurodiversity and entrepreneurship? In this episode, we’re excited to have a legend from the platform thinking space Sangeet Paul Choudary, where we explore his fascinating journey from the micro level to macro when analysing the platform economy. As Founder of Platformation Labs, and author of two bestselling books Platform Revolution and Platform Scale, Sangeet is best known for his work on platform economics and network effects. He frequently advises the leadership of Fortune 500 firms and has been selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. Sangeet's work on platforms has been selected by Harvard Business Review as one of the top 10 ideas in strategy and has been featured thrice in the HBR Top 10 Must Reads compilations. Sangeet is a frequent keynote speaker at leading global forums including the G20 Summit, the World50 Summit, the United Nations, and the World Economic Forum. Sangeet helps us understand in depth how control and commoditization of supply play out in the current evolution of platforms and how regulators ought to look at it. He also paints an extremely interesting picture of the unbundling of work and what it may mean for the future of work coordination infrastructures, as work gets re-bundled in a post-firm context. Are we going to see teams join up to solve challenges related to the job-to-be-done, rather than taking on larger roles? Will the job-welfare bundle disappear? These are some interesting questions we dig into with Sangeet. In this episode we have two leading platform thinkers on the show: Marshall Van Alstyne, Questrom Chair Professor at Boston University and Geoffrey Parker, professor of engineering at the Thayer School of Dartmouth College. They are both visiting scholars at the MIT Initiative for the Digital Economy and co-chair the annual MIT Platform Summit (see references below)Marshall Van Alstyne and Geoffrey Parker - together with Sangeet Choudary - are the authors of Platform Revolution: How Networked Markets Are Transforming the Economy - and How to Make Them Work for You, from 2016. As originators of the concept of the inverted firm, they were further joint winners of the Thinkers50 2019 Digital Thinking Award. In this conversation, we talk about what democratising access to data means for the ability of players in a platform-ecosystem context to innovate and how regulation should be conceived participatory and ex ante. With creating human value as the North star, Marshall and Geoffrey ponder that we might want to see the creation of a Magna Carta of citizens rights for how we should be able to operate and influence on powerful platforms.Remember that you can find the show notes and transcripts from all our episodes on our own Medium publication. Not only offering a new, affordable path to gaining expertise but a business that is reviving the old concept of apprenticeship for the digital age. Listen in as Moe Abbas shares with the guys how invaluable apprentices can be for small businesses, why you always speak directly to every client, and the fast-approaching future of education. When you’re done, check out our talks with Mike Matuz and Roland Frasier to find more opportunities for your business. Geoffrey Parker is a Professor of Engineering at the Thayer School at Dartmouth College, where he also serves as the Director of the Master of Engineering Management Program. In this podcast, he joins Tim to discuss his recent book, The Platform Revolution: How Networked Markets Are Transforming The Economy And How to Make Them Work for You. He also offers insights to business leaders who may be in the process of transitioning their existing data, from an informational intercompany resource into a new product offering or service. Key Takeaways: [1:38] Geoff Parker defines a platform. [5:38] A real life business example of how Marriott International controls every aspect of the customer experience vs. Airbnb who controls very little. [10:00] The platform is part of a longer arc, which started with global outsourcing. [15:30] Industries with regulations and high failure cost will be disrupted first and it will affect their end markets. [24:52] How does the globalization movement affect local economies? [27:22] How can leaders mitigate risk through this transitional period and should they develop their own platform strategies? [33:07] Incumbent firms have an opportunity to repackage and repurpose their existing data into new products and services.
