They co-led the Nuvocargo Seed round together. Based in Mexico City, she has a “boots on the ground” view of Latin America that I love. Methods for building network effects there is not what one might think -- and as a result, go-to-market in Latin America demands building trust bridges and leveraging confidence networks. Understanding the psychology of LatAm consumers is a powerful unlock for new Founders entering the region.

Gigi is one of the most appreciated, sharp and talented investors in the Israeli startup scene, but also abroad. He is a GP at NFX together with James Currier, Pete Flint, Omri Drori & Morgan Beller. After being a pilot in the Israeli Air Force, Gigi founded several startups, such as Playtika (acquired for $4.4 billion), Ridge, Beach Bums and more. He used to be CEO of 888 Holdings, one of the world's frontrunners in the gaming industry. Gigi invested in startups such as Komodor, Mammoth Biosciences, Kenshoo, MyHeritage and countless others. He also serves as an advisor on the board of several organizations, such as MEET - Middle East Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow.    Gigi candidly  shared with me his personal journey.   The CEO Persona We spoke about the complexity embedded in the CEO role - the costume you wear, and how that sometimes gets confused with the real you. We shared how as a young CEO - he was managed by his ego, with no compassion and forgiveness, and how important it is for a CEO to learn to put his ego aside and really listen to others. Being forgiving to himself and to others  is something that he takes with him into the investor position.   In Silicon Valley - both the founders and investors use a language which nurtures a complex threshold of expectations -  they are all “killing it”. They should not show weakness, which brings a lot of misery, and literally “killing it.” Now - it doesn't mean that you should share your weakness with everyone - but you should do it with your inner circle and close peers.     The Investor Persona Gigi sees his role as the sounding board of the entrepreneurs he invests in. Once they share their truth - it's a ‘Protected Zone,' and they can rest assured that it stays there. Gigi and the other NFX GPs don't insist on being on the board, but they insist on being the last conversation prior to the board. Sometimes, it's also ‘tough love' - as this is what they need to hear at that moment.   Gigi believes that as investors - they should be grateful to have been chosen by the founders to join their journey. The founders are generally brilliant, hungry, energetic and sacrificing a lot in this path. It's not ‘our' company - it's theirs. For him, the lowest of lows - is to find out he picked the wrong entrepreneur.    Founders' Psychological Traits  Gigi has seen more than 10,000 entrepreneurs over the years. In different verticals - different traits are needed. But, there are psychological aspects that are true for entrepreneurs in general.   Founders are a mix of inherent contradictions Optimism - they never believe they'll fail They must have an elastic and agile mind, so they can reconvene new directions when needed Be open and transparent Crystalize a clear vision & WHY Be data-driven decision-makers Entrepreneurs can be either arrogant & loud or insecure & quiet; the range is surprising. However, both types can be great entrepreneurs. Decision Makers - “Move Fast and Break Things”Speed is one of the main character traits founders should have, whilst being willing to accept failure. If you make a mistake>>you fix>>iterate>>move.  Speed needs to be balanced with the quality of decisions - especially when it comes to recruiting talents.  Gigi shares his personal growth from being the smartest guy in the room, telling others what to do, to being the mentor that thinks together with them. He likes providing them with tools to make decisions and letting them make their own. That has a lot to do with the concept of parenting and how we educate & mentor our children and founders.   Gigi sees the cherry on top of his role as an investor in helping the entrepreneurs balance their psychological traits, is learning how to wear the various costumes when needed. More importantly, it is knowing when to leave them aside.    For Gigi, what helped him more than all in his personal growth journey - was learning from failures. Failure, the way he sees it, is a call to reach a higher level of consciousness. A “wake up call,” an opportunity to better ourselves.

Key Takeaways: 1. 70% of the value in tech has been created by catalyzing network effects within the core business. 2. Competition in the venture ecosystem is good for business. The disbalance of power in the past caused bad behavior, and more competition is good for Founders and helps them find the best partner for their specific endeavor. 3. Look for Founder's who can take other peoples perspectives. A lot of Founders aren't self critical enough, and don't live in the shoes of the customer or investor or their employee enough, and the skill of seeing something as others see it allows you to be a better builder, mentor, negotiator and leader. 4. For folks breaking into venture, find a fund you can relate with and is in tune with your ethos. In this episode, we have a boundaryless conversation with James Currier one of Silicon Valley's foremost experts in growth and network effects. James is a four-time CEO of VC backed companies and a pioneer of user-generated models, viral marketing, A/B testing, crowdsourcing, and myriad of other growth techniques that have since been adopted by nearly all technology companies. In 2015, James co-founded NFX, a $150M early-stage venture capital firm focused on network effect businesses along with Pete Flint and Gigi Levy Weiss. In this conversation, we explore the real and so far unseen boundaries of the transition towards an economy more heavily based on marketplaces and market-networks, and how this transformation both shapes and is shaped by the major shifts and challenges that are currently emerging in the global society, including environmental, social, political, regulatory. We talk about the need for strong and charismatic leaders to steward these shifts, as well as the need to re-train people to gain the right competencies to deal with an increasingly digital, networked economy and transforming industries.  Read more on our Medium story https://stories.platformdesigntoolkit.com/ Here are some important links from the conversation: > Ben Evans' presentation “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants” during the World Economic Forum in January 2020, https://www.ben-evans.com/presentations  > Simone Cicero: “Why the Next Paradigm Shift may not be Technological”, https://stories.platformdesigntoolkit.com/paradigm-shift-regulation-af48b87a0eeb  > Ben Thompson, The End of the Beginning, https://stratechery.com/2020/the-end-of-the-beginning/ > Niall Ferguson (2017), The Square and the Tower: Networks and Power, from the Freemasons to Facebook, https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35629744-the-square-and-the-tower > Libra cryptocurrency, https://libra.org/en-US/ > Lambda school, https://lambdaschool.com/ > Incredible health, https://www.incrediblehealth.com/ > Hire.com, https://www.peoplefluent.com/  Find out more about the show and the research at Boundaryless at www.platformdesigntoolkit.com/podcast  Music by liosound.Recorded on March 18th 2020

a16z Podcast: Not all Network Effects Are Created Equal

From hardware and hardwires to smartphones and social, technology wants to connect. It's almost a native property of technology and especially software businesses, which is why network effects matter. "It was endemic to these technologies that they wanted to become connected and once connected, they become networks and once networks, they become network effects. Other products like cars or toasters or houses or whatever, aren't natively connected physically or through information sharing," observes James Currier. But not all network effects are equal -- not only can they be strong or weak, there are many different types depending on the business. Currier, who is the co-founder and managing partner of an accelerator (NFX Guild) that advises and runs a runs a program for all kinds of early-stage companies with network effects, shares their ever-evolving taxonomy for thinking about different types of network effects in this episode of the a16z podcast. These labels matter. It's not just words, but language that aids understanding -- and the corresponding growth playbook -- that can help build businesses with network effects, especially given the specific challenges they face. And finally, why did some companies with network effects take off but others didn't? The views expressed here are those of the individual AH Capital Management, L.L.C.
