He received his doctorate from MIT, where he was a doctoral student alongside Marshall Van Alstyne. Summary: In this episode, Geoff, a leading expert in platform research and co-author of Platform Revolution, discusses the origins of his work on platforms, the evolution of platform business models, and the ongoing relevance of platform thinking in today's dynamic technological and regulatory landscape. The conversation traces the journey from early observations of free online services and the formalization of two-sided markets to the strategic implications of platforms and their impact across various industries, including B2B and energy. Geoff reflects on the initial skepticism surrounding platform theory, the significant effect of Platform Revolution, and his current work exploring platform dynamics in specific sectors. The discussion also touches upon the challenges faced by established firms in transitioning to platform models and the influence of emerging technologies and regulations on the platform ecosystem. Key Discussion Points The genesis of platform research: Stemming from observations of ad-sponsored networks and the emergence of free online services during the dot-com boom, leading to the formal study of two-sided markets and network effects. Early challenges in platform theory: The initial uphill battle to get foundational work on platforms published. The evolution of platform thinking: How the understanding of platforms has been shaped by events like the dot-com bust and the rise of tech giants. Strategic implications: The development of concepts like platform envelopment and the broader strategic considerations for businesses adopting platform models. The impact of regulation and new technologies: The influence of regulations like GDPR and CCPA, the increasing power of platforms, and the emergence of AI and blockchain on platform strategies. Challenges and opportunities in B2B platforms: The complexities of network effects, sales cycles, core transactions, and integration challenges in B2B contexts. True to Steve Jobs' prediction, the iPhone really did change everything. But was it the device itself...or apps that made the digital world easier to access for non-tech experts? This episode explores a tech breakthrough that happened 15 years after Jobs' famous consumer product release, when Siemens launched a digital business platform with a different purpose: to help innovators transform industry, infrastructure and transportation. She's joined by Marshall Van Alstyne, who wrote all about the rise of platforms in the consumer world (the book's called "Platform Revolution," and it's a bestseller) to show you how the app principles letting us put data into action with the click of a button now apply to managing machines, grids, and trains. Plus, Peter Koerte, Chief Technology and Strategy Officer at Siemens, joins to highlight how merging the real with the digital could be our secret weapon in the fight against climate change. Turns out, the next big tech revolution isn't coming to your devices, but to the physical world all around you. At Black Hat 2024 in Las Vegas, Sean Martin from On Location interviews Dror Liwer of Coro, uncovering the impressive strides Coro has made in creating a truly cohesive cybersecurity platform. This conversation reveals how Coro distinguishes itself in an industry saturated with buzzwords and inadequate solutions, particularly for smaller and mid-sized businesses.Meeting in VegasSean Martin starts the conversation by appreciating the vibrant atmosphere at the Black Hat Business Hall. The colorful Coro booth, coupled with the energetic team, sets the perfect backdrop for a discussion centered on platform innovation.Sean Martin: "Here we are, Dror. Fantastic seeing you here in Vegas."Dror Liwer: "It's where we meet."The Platform BuzzThe term “platform” has become a buzzword in the cybersecurity industry. Dror explains that many companies claim to offer platforms, but these so-called platforms often result from the integration of various point solutions, which don't communicate effectively with each other.Dror Liwer: “We built Coro as a platform and have been a platform for 10 years. It's kind of funny to see everybody now catching up and trying to pretend to be a platform.”Dror criticizes how companies use “platform” to create market confusion, explaining that a true platform requires seamless integration, a single endpoint agent, and a unified data lake.Defining a True PlatformDror and Sean delve deep into what makes Coro's platform genuinely innovative. Dror emphasizes that a real platform collects and processes data across multiple modules, providing a single pane of glass for operators. He contrasts this with other solutions that merely integrate various tools, resulting in operational complexity and inefficiencies.Dror Liwer: "A real platform is an engine that has a set of tools on top of it that work seamlessly together using a single pane of glass, a single endpoint agent, and a single data lake that shares all of the information across all of the different modules."The Role of DataData integration is a cornerstone of Coro's platform. Dror explains that each module in Coro functions as both a sensor and protector, feeding data into the system and responding to anomalies in real-time.Dror Liwer: "The collection of data happens natively at the sensor. They feed all the data into one very large data lake."This unified approach allows Coro to eliminate the time-critical gap between event detection and response, a significant advantage over traditional systems that often rely on multiple disparate tools.Supporting MSPs and Mid-Market BusinessesOne of Coro's key missions is to support Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and mid-market businesses, sectors that have been largely overlooked by larger cybersecurity firms. By offering a more manageable and less costly platform, Coro empowers these providers to offer comprehensive cybersecurity services without the high operational costs traditionally associated with such tasks.Dror Liwer: “We are changing that economic equation, allowing MSPs to offer full cybersecurity solutions to their customers at an affordable price.”Fulfilling New RequirementsDror also sheds light on how Coro helps businesses comply with new regulatory requirements or cybersecurity mandates, often dictated by their position in the supply chain.Dror Liwer: "When this guy comes to you and says, ‘Hey, I need to now comply with this or do that,' this is an opportunity to tell them, ‘Don't worry. I got you covered. I have Coro for you.'”ConclusionDror Liwer's insights during Black Hat 2024 highlight how Coro is not only addressing but revolutionizing the cybersecurity needs of small to mid-sized businesses and their MSP partners. By creating a true platform that reduces complexity and operational costs, Coro sets a new standard in the cybersecurity industry.Learn more about CORO: https://itspm.ag/coronet-30deNote: This story contains promotional content. Did 26 words from an American law passed in 1996 create the internet? Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act says that interactive websites and applications cannot be held legally liable for the content posted on their sites by their users. Without the law, it's likely Facebook, Amazon, Reddit, Yelp, and X wouldn't exist — at least not in their current form. But some say the law shields large tech companies from liability for enabling, or even amplifying, harmful content. On today's show, we discuss Section 230, recent efforts to reform it, and new proposals for content moderation on the internet. Marshall Van Alstyne is a professor of information systems at Boston University. Robert Corn-Revere is FIRE's chief counsel. Sangeet is a frequent keynote speaker at leading global forums including the G20 Summit, the World50 Summit, the United Nations, and the World Economic Forum. In this episode as we delve into Sangeet's recent report - and despite it still being early days - how the building block approach can play out in the real world economy. We also discuss why the fundamentals in VC will change, the nature of composability, the role of DAOs and empowering the end-stakeholder. A full transcript of the episode can be found on our website: boundaryless.io/podcast/sangeet-choudary/ Key highlights from the conversation Markets evolve towards more composability as more and more of the value chain is digitized Traditional extraction models (eg: economies of complements, data lock-ins, etc) are put in trouble Value extraction will move at the venture investing and fund layers Organizations will need to embrace a more DAO-like structure and become more context-rich (3EO comes in handy). On Airbnb, people stay at strangers' homes. On Twitter, people get trolled. Both are global tech platforms, but why do people treat strangers well on one, and badly on the other? The answer lies in platform governance: the rules you make to encourage good interactions and punish the bad stuff. Learn how to set up platforms where people are nice to strangers with this week's podcast episode. Learning notes from this episode. Platform governance touches product development, engineering and marketing. It isn't just a corporate mission statement nobody reads. The logic we apply to creating good offline environments also apply to platforms, but just on a bigger scale. Ask yourself: how do I want people to feel when they get here? What do I want them to do? The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters by Priya Parker is an excellent book on how to create offline environments. You can apply these lessons to the online world you are creating. Community leaders and opinion formers are key to good platform governance. If the most popular people at a party are friendly, everyone else will be friendly too. If they are mean, everyone else will take their cue from that. This is the same in your online platform. To create positive platform governance, begin defining what good interactions and bad interactions are for your users, not for you. If users have good interactions, they will keep coming back. Dr. Geoff Parker says the punchline when it comes to choosing a career path is that "you don't have to make up your mind." Pursuing computer science during his undergrad years and then spending time in semiconductor engineering, he says that a lot of what is interesting in the economy today is at the intersection of technology, business, economics. This intersection makes Dr. Parker one of the foremost experts in his field of platform technology; he is the co-author of Platform Revolution and a professor of engineering at the Thayer School of Dartmouth College. In this episode of Net Effects Podcast, co-hosts Les Ottolenghi and Mark Bavisotto visit with Dr. Parker about how platforms are changing the global economy and the future of business. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/neteffectspodcast/message
Alexander Torrenegra, Torre: Reinventing job-matching and recruitment services, Ep 143 Alexander Torrenegra believes that most talent is going to waste because it’s not being exposed to the right opportunities. That’s why he founded Torre, a platform that streamlines the application, recruitment, and selection process for remote work. This new professional network matches the best talent in Latin America with companies around the world. Before Torre, Alexander co-founded and bootstrapped Voice123 and BunnyStudio, forever transforming the voice acting industry. He’s also been an angel investor with his wife for over two decades, won many entrepreneurship awards, and written several practical guides. I sat down with Alexander to talk about his entrepreneurial trajectory from getting a loan from a bank at 14 years old with his first business, to moving from his native Colombia to the US and eventually founding Torre. We also discuss Voice 123’s business model and the benefits of bootstrapping a company. Getting a loan as a 14-year-old Alexander explains that becoming an entrepreneur has always been a decision he’s made out of necessity, rather than passion. For him, it’s a means to an end–that at 14 years old, was buying a computer. He’d fallen in love with computers at a very young age, sneaking into classrooms in the after hours at the university where his mom was a secretary. He soon figured out that with a loan from the bank he would be able to buy a computer. However, he hadn’t factored in that his age might be an issue. Learn more about the incredible story behind Alexander’s first bank loan at 14 years old and how he paid it off in this episode of Crossing Borders. The early days of Voice123 When Alexander met his wife in the US, he was introduced to a whole new world. Through his wife, a voice actress herself, he learned about the inner workings of the voice acting industry and how unmeritocratic it could be. By then, Alexander was working as a webmaster and decided to create a solution to a problem that nobody had tackled until that moment. Listen to this episode of Crossing Borders to learn more about what the voice acting industry looked like before Voice123. The first step for a moonshot According to Alexander, there are two basic components to kicking off a moonshot-based business. One of the biggest factors is a person’s capacity to have financial freedom. These types of businesses are characterized by being extremely ambitious and exploratory, meaning that there may not be any near-term profitability or benefit. Therefore, having something to fall back on or resources to maintain yourself is key. Check out this episode of Crossing Borders to learn more about moonshot-thinking and how Alexander brainstorms new business ideas. A year after COVID-19, the job market has been completely transformed. The reality is that remote work is here to stay, and solutions like Alexander’s Torre are making it easier for companies to hire and for people to find work in this new normal. In this episode, we’re excited to have a legend from the platform thinking space Sangeet Paul Choudary, where we explore his fascinating journey from the micro level to macro when analysing the platform economy. As Founder of Platformation Labs, and author of two bestselling books Platform Revolution and Platform Scale, Sangeet is best known for his work on platform economics and network effects. He frequently advises the leadership of Fortune 500 firms and has been selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. Sangeet's work on platforms has been selected by Harvard Business Review as one of the top 10 ideas in strategy and has been featured thrice in the HBR Top 10 Must Reads compilations. Sangeet is a frequent keynote speaker at leading global forums including the G20 Summit, the World50 Summit, the United Nations, and the World Economic Forum. Sangeet helps us understand in depth how control and commoditization of supply play out in the current evolution of platforms and how regulators ought to look at it. He also paints an extremely interesting picture of the unbundling of work and what it may mean for the future of work coordination infrastructures, as work gets re-bundled in a post-firm context. Are we going to see teams join up to solve challenges related to the job-to-be-done, rather than taking on larger roles? Will the job-welfare bundle disappear? These are some interesting questions we dig into with Sangeet. La rivoluzione delle piattaforme sta caratterizzando in maniera sempre maggiore questo momento storico. Ma cosa significa concretamente rivoluzione delle piattaforme?
Everyone immediately thinks of Uber and Airbnb when it comes to platforms. However, the platform model is increasingly being introduced by companies in traditional markets. Platforms change the rules of the game and often turn these traditional markets upside down. But should every organization establish a platform? What steps must an organization take to form a platform? And what is expected of the internal organization? We speak to Sangeet Paul Choudary, known worldwide for his expertise in platform economy. Sangeet is the author of the bestsellers Platform Revolution and Platform Scale and advises various governments and organizations about designing platforms.

In this “Influencers” podcast JP Kuehlwein talks with Sangeet Paul Choudary about the unique and exponential business- and brand building opportunities the platform business model offers – but also its limitations. Web-based platform businesses seem to have grown into becoming dominant players in the most diverse industries like transportation (think Uber), hospitality (Airbnb), social media (Facebook), entertainment and communication (Apple and iTunes) or knowledge management (Google), retail (Amazon) and so forth. They have become some of the most highly valuable assets in the world – it seems like overnight. -- No wonder that there is an army of start-ups trying to convert yet more sectors to be organized by the platforms they design. And no wonder that traditional manufacturers and service providers try to figure out how to counter this development or – increasingly – get ahead of it and become platforms themselves. Jp and Sangeet will talk about the essential components of platform business and how to harness ‘network effects’. They will discuss how to predict if a platform will grow to become a desirable brand and financially attractive business long-term. What drives the success of an Amazon, Uber or Facebook? How can traditional ‘pipeline businesses’ compete? What are the vulnerabilities and downsides of this business models when it comes to branding, financials, operations and organization? JP Kuehlwein is Leader of the Marketing and Communication Institutes at The Conference Board and Principal at Ueber-Brands Consulting, New York. He consults, writes and teaches on the subject of brand elevation applying over 20 years of marketing and management leadership experience in the Consumer Products industry. Sangeet Paul Choudary is the best selling co-author of Platform Revolution and Platform Scale. Sangeet is also the young global leader at the World Economic Forum and founder at Platform Mission Labs and keynote speaker. What actually drove you to this research into the platform business models? How do you think platform business models have impacted business strategy? What strategic framework can we use to understand the competitive landscape today? What are the key differences from pipeline to platform business models? What are some of the metrics that platform business models need to track? Is there a difference between growth tools and network effects? What are network effects? What are negative network effects? And why it is important to understand them? What is the chicken and egg dilemma? Why is that important? Where should you start to build a platform business model today? What are you working next? Where can people find valuable resources to understand platform business models?
In this session, I'm drawing from an interview of FourWeekMBA with Sangeet Paul Choudary, co-author of Platform Revolution and author of Platform Scale to grasp the key differences between linear or pipeline business models and platform business models.

Facebook is a company everyone loves to hate. But few people realize that Facebook's scandals are almost completely predetermined by the nature of a platform business in a time of essentially free corporate credit. Add to that lax antitrust oversight and we have a recipe for disaster. Yon Perullo, CFA, FRM and Daniel Satchkov, CFA discuss and argue the topic. Gear up for some highly insightful tech talk with the VP of Platform Ecosystem at HubSpot, Editor at chiefmartec.com and Program Chair of MarTech, Scott Brinker. Advances in marketing technology have changed a lot about how marketing is done today. In this episode we discuss what those advances mean for your marketing plan, the benefits of looking into and incorporating new technology into your upcoming strategies and as usual, smash apart some common myths to pieces. Takeaways: Don't pick your technology without first having a strategy of how to use it. It's important to use new technology and innovations to uncover what's possible with your strategy. You should have someone on your team keep a finger on the pulse of changing technologies that are relevant to your customers. Don't waste time chasing things that just look or sound cool. Make sure they are useful to both you and your customers before launching right into the unknown. Use the 80/20 rule as a guide to build your marketing technology toolkit. 80% of your efforts should be focused on present day operations and 20% should be spent looking at trends and emerging technologies. Get out and take time to meet with others in your profession but in different businesses. Ask questions and see what they are doing. You may discover something new. The cloud world brought a whole new revolution to technology that enables better integration which will ultimately open up many creative possibilities for the future. Grab hold of the citizen marketing trend! There are so many platforms and tools out there that have made it easier for regular marketers to build, develop and design with very little expertise needed.
