In America's Cold Warrior, James Graham Wilson traces Paul Nitze's career path in national security after World War II, a time when many of his mentors and peers returned to civilian life. Serving in eight presidential administrations, Nitze commanded White House attention even when he was out of government, especially with his withering criticism of Jimmy Carter during Carter's presidency. While Nitze is perhaps best known for leading the formulation of NSC-68, which Harry Truman signed in 1950, Wilson contends that Nitze's most significant contribution to American peace and security came in the painstaking work done in the 1980s to negotiate successful treaties with the Soviets to reduce nuclear weapons while simultaneously deflecting skeptics surrounding Ronald Reagan. America's Cold Warrior connects Nitze's career and concerns about strategic vulnerability to the post-9/11 era and the challenges of the 2020s, where the United States finds itself locked in geopolitical competition with the People's Republic of China and Russia. Short Bio: James Graham Wilson is a Supervisory Historian in the Office of the Historian at the Department of State. He has compiled 11 volumes in the Foreign Relations of the United States series, including the sequence of National Security Policy volumes covering 1977–1992. In this episode, we hear from Graham Wilson, one of our “fathers in the Lord” within Praxeis. As long-time pastoral leader, Graham carries the heart and DNA of movement. As a trusted voice of wisdom and accountability, he also serves on the Praxeis Board and is part of a wider group of elders in our midst. "Don't get anxious" At the conclusion of our Launch 25 gathering, Graham shared a powerful word — calling us to stay rooted in passion and trust, not weighed down by anxiety. Graham urges us to keep our hearts passionate for what God is calling us into and to resist the enemy's attempts to fill us with worry and anxiety, which only limit us from being the gift we are meant to be. “Don't get anxious. When you're confronted with what God is calling you to do, remember—it's His work.” Psalm 46 Graham draws our attention to Psalm 46. “We know when we've taken our eyes off God, our refuge and strength, because our joy starts to dissipate.” Psalm 46[1] ‘God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. [2] Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, [3] though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. [4] There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. [5] God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. [6] Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. [7] The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. [8] Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. [9] He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. [10] He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” [11] The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.' Laying down any burdens of anxiety “As I was preparing this word, I felt like worry and anxiety has been one of those rocks or stones for some of you. Give your worries to God as He commissions you forward." And he reminds us of the simple, powerful call of disciple-making: “All we have to do is passionately go after God. We don't have to stress about the results. You can sum up DMM in one word: obey.” Let this word strengthen your heart. Keep your eyes on Jesus—both the Lion and the Lamb.

A Comprehensive Guide to Modern LeadershipIn a recent podcast episode hosted by Josh, listeners were treated to an enlightening conversation with Graham Wilson, a renowned leadership expert and founder of Success Factory. Dubbed a "leadership wizard" by a client, Graham brings over three decades of experience in leadership, from his early days in the British Army to his current role in corporate leadership. This blog post delves into the key themes and insights from the episode, offering actionable advice and detailed explanations to help leaders at all levels navigate the complexities of modern leadership.Graham Wilson's title of "leadership wizard" was coined by a client who appreciated his ability to simplify complex leadership concepts. This simplicity is a cornerstone of his approach, focusing on helping leaders decode what effective leadership looks like in today's fast-paced world. Reflecting on his extensive career, Graham recounts his early experiences in the British Army, where he learned the importance of teamwork and high performance. He was introduced to the concept of "mission command," which emphasizes empowering teams to make decisions to achieve a shared purpose. This experience starkly contrasted with his observations in the corporate world, where he found organizations often over-managed and under-led.Today, Graham believes we are in a new era of leadership characterized by rapid change and uncertainty. He describes the current environment as "VUCA" (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous), which requires leaders to adopt a more agile and collaborative mindset. The traditional model of leadership, where leaders have all the answers, is no longer viable. Instead, leaders must foster a culture of empowerment, allowing team members to contribute to problem-solving and decision-making. By integrating these principles and practical tips into your leadership approach, you can create high-performance environments, inspire your team, and leave a lasting impact on your organization.About Graham Wilson:Graham is a Leadership Expert, author of Leadership Laid Bare, The New Leadership Manifesto and wabisugi. On today's episode we are talking about how not adjusting your leadership style for today's people might be killing your company.Graham Wilson specializes in helping top business leaders reach their full potential through advanced leadership techniques, simplifying complex concepts with his proven toolkit. His expertise spans leadership, strategy, innovation, change management, and elite team development. Having developed over 85,000 leaders, he is trusted by global organizations for his practical guidance and team-building abilities. With a background in the British Army and commercial experience at Dupont, Graham founded Successfactory over 26 years ago, witnessing firsthand how effective leadership drives extraordinary results. Key Discussion Points:· Leaders must adapt to a rapidly changing world where traditional management can't provide all the answers.· Effective leadership requires balancing clear direction, autonomy, and continuous performance conversations rather than outdated practices like annual appraisals.· Building a leadership culture involves setting clear organizational values, aligning behaviors with those values, and fostering trust by avoiding self-interest and inconsistency.· Leaders need to transition from traditional practices like annual appraisals and rigid KPIs to more agile and collaborative approaches that reflect the current business environment. Emphasizing cross-functional teams and breaking down silos can enhance organizational effectiveness.· It's crucial to educate and mentor new graduates and employees not just on the immediate job skills but on the broader context of the business environment. Encouraging a mindset of giving before receiving, fostering empathy, and developing a thinking and problem-solving approach can prepare them for leadership roles.·  Understanding that people are motivated by different factors, including purpose, autonomy, and mastery, is essential. Organizations should focus on creating an employee value proposition that attracts and retains talent by ensuring fair compensation and promoting a purpose-driven culture that aligns with employees' values.Top Takeaways for the Audience: 1. Speed Up by Slowing Down: Take the time to think and reflect before acting. Being efficient and effective requires thoughtful consideration to ensure you're doing the right things, not just doing things right.2. Self-Awareness and Authentic Leadership: To lead others effectively, you must first understand and lead yourself. Delve into your values, beliefs, and strengths. This self-awareness forms the foundation of authentic leadership. 3. Play to Your Strengths: Focus on environments and roles where your strengths can shine. You can compensate for weaknesses with support from others, but leveraging your strengths leads to greater satisfaction and success. Remember to align your work with what gives you a fulfilling life, continually reassessing and adapting as your circumstances evolve. How to Connect with Graham: Website: https://www.grahamwilson.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/leadershipwizard/

In this episode we conclude our series from our Launch 24 program with an awesome word from Pastor Graham Wilson, one of our Praxeis board members. Graham speaks into our sense of 'ordinariness' and feelings of disqualification compared to the greatness of Jesus and his great commission.  “When we look back on our lives, God has been relentless about his purposes being worked out in our lives despite our own sense of ordinariness.” Prophetic words from Launch 24 “Worship me by stepping into what I've called you to, even if it's messy and uncomfortable.”  “I love you and have chosen you. You might feel inadequate and that it's impossible. But know that I love you and there's nothing too difficult for me.”  “Be still and know that I am fighting for you.”  Fireside restoration Graham leads us into Peter's encounter with Jesus including his great failure when he denies Jesus around a fire. In John 21, Jesus recreates the fire of Peter's failure when he meets him beside the same lake where he first called him. It's in this context where Jesus reinstates and also calls Peter to once again “Follow me”.  Graham asks us three questions (from John 21:15, 20-22):  Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my lambs.” Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them…he asked, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” What if Jesus is asking you, “Do you love me more than these?”. I wonder what the ‘these' would be for you?.  Jesus follows this question saying “Then…”. What is his ‘then' for you?' What do you need to stop looking at in other peoples lives so you can be enabled to simply follow Jesus? Why not listen to this word from Graham a couple of times, allowing it to feed your heart? Then think about the times when you needed Jesus to bring you around his fire of restoration. To not just be forgiven but called by him. Allow him to bring purpose, hope and destiny to your life again as his follower.  Graham's recommended resources: ‘Receive' song by Cyndi Ruakere: listen via Spotify here 'Lectio 365' daily prayer & devotion Praying like Monks, living like Fools (Tyler Staton)

Guest Graham Wilson is a former Chief Flight Instructor and Pilot Examiner in Windsor, Ontario. He has worked as a machinist and served on a school board. Graham produces aviation-themed content for his ‘Superpilotish' YouTube channel and website superpilotish.com. In this interview, Graham, a from-real-experiences storyteller, talks about decision making for pilots, including ‘The DECIDE Model'; non-punitive mistake reporting; obvious or nuanced risks pilots encounter during flying (including toilet paper in the fuel tank); and benefits and drawbacks of at-home flight simulator software for aspiring pilots. THE DECIDE MODEL. DECIDE is an acronym from flight literacy training. It is a six-step risk management loop process, similar to simulated annealing, that provides the pilot with a logical way of making decisions during atypical situations. DETECT that a change has occurred. This requires the pilot to exercise situational awareness and baseline awareness. ESTIMATE the need to counter or react. A blinking dash light might only require that it be noted for further scrutiny after landing. CHOOSE the desired outcome. This might be to return to the airport. IDENTIFY actions to control the change. Review emergency checklists, which might be “turn things off and then turn them back again,” and then communicate the problem to the airport. DO (perform) the action. The tower might ask if you want to declare an emergency. If you do, the tower will give you priority to land and might send out emergency services. As Graham reminds us, always be communicating your observations and actions to others. There is a tendency during a crisis for people to not talk while they act. Pilots are taught to describe their actions as they do or plan them, but this isn't inherent to non-pilots facing uncertainty. EVALUATE the success of the action. NON-PUNITIVE MISTAKE REPORTING. Graham underscores that pilots applying their professional discretion to report a mistake will not encounter blowback of blame or shame. Measuring information-sharing won't dig to the root causes. Why did the failure occur? Did a part fail? Did software fail? Is there a flaw in a larger system? Should there be more or different training? If it was a mistake by the pilot, what contributed to that mistake and what redundancies might be put in place to account for it. Focus on a better system and you're working together. Graham adds that a pilot won't be billed for the airport's emergency services. Doc noted that billing for emergency services is common in America, from search and rescue to firefighting, and that some people refuse emergency care in anticipation of huge bills. DUMB DESIGN OF WWII PLANES. Cliff Kuang (2019) wrote an article for WIRED in which he described how WWII pilots were blamed for crashing their B-17 Flying Fortresses. In one instance, a confused pilot jumped into a new plane during a bombing raid to find the instruments completely re-arranged. He managed to dart around the runway until the attack was over. However, the true cause of many of the pilot-attributed crashes was actually due to the design of the plane, or “designer error.” “The reason why all those pilots were crashing when their B-17s were easing into a landing was that the flaps and landing gear controls looked exactly the same and felt exactly the same." The ingenious solution was to create a system of distinctively shaped knobs and levers that made it easy to distinguish all the controls of the plane merely by feel, so that there's no chance of confusion even if you're flying in the dark. And, it worked! BIGGEST RISK TO A PILOT. The top risk is running out of fuel, with adverse weather being a close second. But, using a cheaper fuel, such as an 89 octane with 10% ethanol, might be a subtle risk to a pilot. Depending upon how long the fuel has been in the tank, it might begin to absorb moisture and also congeal. This could impair the plane's fuel system during flight. Ego is also a risk. There's no shame in getting cleared for takeoff and then aborting the flight as you stare at a dark storm cloud beyond the runway. Flight instructors will model this practice of confident decision making. It's the primacy effect. The first time the student sees the instructor cancel a flight due to iffy weather, for example, is something that is burned into the student's brain. AT-HOME SIMULATOR SOFTWARE - IS IT GOOD? Graham fields these questions often from aspiring pilots. He notes that such programs fuel students' enthusiasm for flying and can help them with an early grasp of terminology and some basic operations of the plane. However, any simulators will not prepare a student to fly a plane. SAFETY DOC WEBSITE, BLOG & BOOKS: www.safetyphd.com. The Safety Doc Podcast is hosted & produced by David P. Perrodin, PhD. Long-distance walking is a very personal, and intimate experience. But aside from its obvious benefits (time alone, time to recharge, exploring new places, being out in nature), many walkers opt to raise money while long-distance walking. Sponsored walks are not uncommon, and for individuals, or groups or people wanting to raise money for charities close to their hearts, there are a number of options and ways to do it. But fundraising is difficult, and with most of us coming across various fundraising events, and requests, we can become a bit numb to it, and often it's hard to choose who to donate to. I know, I've been there before. Graham Wilson however, from 120 Marathon Man is a rather spectacular fundraising machine. Graham, a retired Police Officer, is walking 120 marathons in as many days, supported only by his wife, and pooch in a campervan who will be waiting for him at the end of each day. However, Graham is walking to raise money for a fairly extensive list of charities and has a very impressive list of sponsors lined up. If you are doing a sponsored walk, then this is an episode to listen to, as it really helps to show the kind of hard work which goes into awareness, and subsequently sponsors even before you have set foot on the trail. It's a really practical episode, which I hope will be of help to you, and an interesting listen. Enjoy the show! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/distancehiker/message

There is no hiding place for Graham as he talks about his darkest days, including taking payday loans to feed his alcohol habit and drinking weedkiller in a bid to end his pain. Thankfully, Graham is here to tell the story of how he gave up the booze on 4 October 2013, overcoming his demons and turned his life around to be where he is now. In his role as a patron, he frequently gives talks in Universities and Schools to raise mental health awareness and explains the great work of Back Onside. As you are by now aware, we have our own charity event for Back Onside on Sunday 29 March at Broadwood between fans and ex Players of Aberdeen and Celtic. Graham elaborates on the importance of events such as ours and the upcoming Back Onside ball on 2 May to bring much needed funds so they can continue to help people in crisis with their mental health struggles. Graham's final message is to encourage anyone who is suffering to speak out, and for others to listen. Nobody should suffer in silence and ending your pain just passes that onto others. Hello and welcome back to the lead generation for financial services podcast. I've got an absolute character for you this week, Mr Graham Wilson, mortgage broker, software creator and founder of Tracker Hub. Graham has been a mortgage broker for 8 years. He started with Royal Bank of Scotland then moved to Santander as a mortgage adviser and stayed there for 5 years before he joined a partnership for a large brokerage firm. He then decided to develop a new system to track referrals after identifying a gap in the market. Introducers and advisers have access to the dashboard which gives them updates and are in the loop and interested to refer more business. Tracker Hub is an online referral tracking platform which manages and tracks all referrals and cases easily. It also monitors leads coming and make sure they are being attended to. After picking up the lead, the adviser follows it through and can watch the progress of the case. The system could also integrate with other CRMs which will let you track the vital records and it’s a lot easier to look at compared to complicated spreadsheets.
