In this episode, I'm exposing the Authenticity Trap for you. The Authenticity Trap is the mixed messages women get about “being themselves.” We're told authenticity is the key to trust, confidence, and influence, yet many of us were conditioned to 1) think we need to lead like men if we want to make it to the top to serve, and 2) constantly abandon our own needs and wants to center and care for those around us. That means when we try to show up authentically, we often bump up against years of social conditioning that taught us to prioritize likability over authenticity. The authenticity trap is what happens when the call to “be yourself” collides with systems and expectations that were never designed to make room for your full, real self. In this episode, I unpack why so many women struggle with authenticity in leadership. It's not because we lack confidence or clarity, but because we've learned to perform leadership instead of embodying it in a way that is true to who we are. We've been rewarded for being agreeable, accommodating, and endlessly capable, even when that performance costs us energy, boundaries, and joy. The result of the Authenticity Trap is burnout, disconnection, and missed opportunities to share your best self with the world. Of course, I'm not going to leave you hanging without an action plan. We will dig into simple ways to begin reclaiming your authenticity as a daily leadership practice. We'll talk about getting clear on your values and boundaries, noticing when you're performing versus connecting, and experimenting with small, brave acts of honesty and self-expression. My hope is that you walk away knowing that authenticity isn't a luxury or a buzzword. It's a muscle that, when strengthened, allows you to tap into who you truly are when you disconnect from all the noise around you. When you strengthen this muscle and step out of the Authenticity Trap, you not only lead with more joy, ease, and impact — you also give everyone around you permission to do the same. Send us a textEver notice how the same habits that stabilize recovery also stabilize your pipeline? We dig into the leadership mindset that sits beneath selling, sobriety, and self-mastery, and why the strongest credibility comes from consistency, not a job title. From the first minute, we challenge the blame game and replace it with ownership—controlling the process in sales and our actions in life—so results stop being random and start being repeatable. We unpack emotional sobriety as a competitive edge: the ability to stay calm when deals wobble, to pause instead of panic, and to meet objections with curiosity. That shift turns pressure into empathy and fear into trust. Along the way, we show how feedback and humility create an ongoing growth loop. Coachability beats charisma, and pride isolates; the people who keep winning ask what could I have done better even when they win, then translate that insight into the next call, the next meeting, the next day sober. You'll hear practical standards you can apply right now: prepare before you perform, track your reps, and model the behavior you want from your team. We talk about moving from achievement to contribution—service in recovery and value in sales—and how alignment with your values attracts the right clients, mentors, and opportunities. Titles don't lead; predictable integrity does. When you lead yourself first, you build a life and a business that others can trust. If this resonated, share it with someone who needs a reset. This week on Leadership is Feminine, Kris Plachy and her Director of Operations, Michelle Arant, sit down for an unscripted conversation that captures leadership in its most human form. What started as a casual team discussion turned into a powerful reflection on how we handle discomfort, accountability, and growth — both in business and in life. Through the lens of a lighthearted story about a pet sitter, Kris and Michelle explore how everyday moments can reveal our relationship with responsibility and self-management. They discuss the tendency to over-accommodate others, the generational shifts in resilience and follow-through, and why true leadership demands that we get comfortable being uncomfortable. Their conversation is an honest reminder that friction isn't failure — it's feedback. Whether you're mentoring a new hire, raising kids, or running a multimillion-dollar company, the path to better leadership begins with allowing discomfort to do its work. Here's what we explore in this episode: How discomfort helps us build capacity for growth and leadership The difference between supporting someone and over-accommodating them Why avoiding friction can unintentionally stunt development — for ourselves and others How leaders can model resilience and self-accountability through their own behavior What small, everyday moments can reveal about how we handle responsibility Why embracing discomfort may be the most undervalued leadership skill of all This conversation invites you to pause and ask: Where am I protecting others — or myself — from the very discomfort that could lead to growth? Hafe you ever felt like you're living as more than one version of yourself? In this episdoe, Chris Hansen uses the metaphor of a kaleidoscope to explore, self-perception, and the emotional tension that comes from being seen - and misseen - in different ways. Just like one pattern inside a kaleidoscope can create many different reflections, we each show up in four version: who we truly are, who we think we are, who others believe we are, and who we think others think we are. When these reflections don't align, we experience self-doubt, insecurity, and emotional exhaustion - the mental tug-of-war that keeps us stuck. But real peace doesn't come from chaning ourselves to match every reflection. It comes from grounding ourselves in our true identity and allowing the other versions to align around it.

In this episode, I delve into the critical issue of becoming a bottleneck in your business as it grows, especially past the 15-employee mark. I discuss the tangible and intangible costs associated with a centralized decision-making process, emphasizing the importance of fostering independence and innovation within teams. I highlight the financial implications of delayed decision-making and explore how a bottleneck mentality can stifle creative input from team members, ultimately affecting morale and growth. Furthermore, I address the personal toll on leaders who feel the weight of control and the need for balance in their lives. By sharing inspiring examples, I encourage leaders to reflect on their roles and empower their teams, paving the way for a healthier organizational culture and sustainable growth. The Cost of Being a Bottleneck Financial Implications of Control Cultural Impact on Your Team Personal Consequences of Bottlenecking The Cost of Being a Bottleneck In this episode, I explore the critical issue of being the bottleneck in your business, a challenge that often emerges as organizations grow beyond the 15-employee mark. Early in a company's journey, it's natural for leaders to be at the center of every decision. But as the team expands, maintaining that same level of control can begin to slow progress, limit innovation, and create hidden costs that restrict growth. I discuss why this transition is such a pivotal leadership moment, one that requires shifting from hands-on management to empowering independence, critical thinking, and ownership across the team. Recognizing when your involvement is helping versus hindering becomes essential to scaling both effectively and sustainably. Financial and Cultural Implications of Control The first cost of being a bottleneck shows up financially. When decisions stall at the top, opportunities are missed, projects slow down, and innovation stagnates. These financial implications often go unnoticed, buried within declining momentum and unrealized revenue. I explain how identifying these bottlenecks can uncover the true cost of control and open pathways to faster, more efficient growth. Beyond finances, the cultural impact can be just as damaging. A bottleneck mentality often breeds hesitation among team members; they wait for approval rather than take initiative. This dynamic suppresses creativity, discourages ownership, and weakens morale. I share how fostering an open culture where ideas are welcomed and independent thinking is valued can reignite engagement, strengthen collaboration, and accelerate innovation across the organization. The Personal Consequences and the Path Forward Finally, I address the personal toll that being a bottleneck takes on leaders themselves. The constant need to control outcomes often leads to burnout, strained relationships, and declining well-being. Many leaders unintentionally trade their health and balance for a sense of control that ultimately limits both personal fulfillment and organizational success. I share real examples of leaders who recognized this pattern and transformed their approach, shifting from control to trust, from micromanagement to mentorship. These stories demonstrate that the path forward isn't about stepping back entirely, but about building a structure that thrives without constant oversight. As I close, I encourage listeners to reflect on their own leadership habits and join our upcoming training sessions designed to help overcome bottleneck challenges. Creating a business that runs smoothly without you isn't just an ideal, it's a mark of mature, sustainable leadership. Through real-world insights and inspiring examples, this episode serves as a call to action for leaders ready to evolve their approach. In dieser Folge erfährst du, warum konsequente Führung bedeutet, Mitarbeiter und Kinder nicht zu entlasten, sondern ihnen Verantwortung zu geben. Championship leadership is rarely about talent alone. It's about consistency, values, and the willingness to do the unglamorous work—especially when no one is watching. For Ross Bernstein, a Hall of Fame speaker and best-selling author of nearly 50 sports books, that truth has been reinforced across thousands of interviews with the world's top athletes and coaches. The most successful leaders, whether in sports or business, operate by a code—one built on trust, culture, and an unwavering commitment to doing things the right way. Bernstein's work focuses on decoding what separates winning teams from the rest. His research draws not only from statistical trends, but from raw, behind-the-scenes conversations inside locker rooms, press boxes, and dugouts. Championship leadership, he explains, isn't about flash or status. It's built on daily habits, strong relationships, and a team-first mentality that fuels performance over the long haul. Integrity is a recurring theme in Bernstein's message. Drawing parallels between sports and business, he emphasizes that true leaders are defined by how they win—not just whether they win. “Anyone can cheat,” he points out. “But being a champion is about doing things the right way, even when it would be easier not to.” That distinction between gamesmanship and character is where trust is built, and where long-term success takes root. In high-performing teams, the culture often mirrors that of the locker room. There's a shared commitment, a sense of personal responsibility, and an understanding that no one wins alone. Whether it's a quarterback investing in private coaching to stay competitive well into his 40s or a top-producing business executive building meaningful client relationships beyond the sales pitch, the edge comes from discipline, preparation, and a relentless work ethic. Bernstein often points to examples like Tom Brady—not because of his accolades, but because of the less visible effort that fueled them. While most people see the highlight reels, they don't see the nutritionists, neurologists, and sleep coaches behind the scenes. That level of commitment is what championship leadership requires: doing the work that others won't, without cutting corners, and without needing applause. In the business world, the lesson is the same. Top performers don't simply show up when it's convenient. They stay ahead by consistently executing the fundamentals. They invest in their teams. They show up with curiosity and ask questions. They visit their clients' operations in person. And perhaps most importantly, they build relationships that aren't transactional—they're built on trust and value. For leaders aiming to build stronger cultures, Bernstein encourages shifting the mindset from hiring the “best” people to hiring the right people. He recalls how legendary coach Pat Summitt built her championship legacy not by recruiting the top-ranked players, but by finding those who shared her values, work ethic, and team-first mentality. It's a powerful reminder that championship leadership begins with alignment—not just with skills, but with culture, attitude, and mission. Trust, according to Bernstein, isn't given. It's earned through behavior, consistency, and shared experience. It also requires a willingness to teach, not just manage. He recalls how Summitt saw herself more as a teacher than a coach—a subtle but powerful shift that cultivated loyalty, performance, and team cohesion. The idea that “will beats skill” echoes throughout Bernstein's work. While some athletes are born with undeniable gifts, most reach the top through effort, sacrifice, and resilience. It's the same for business leaders. Talent might open the door, but championship leadership is what keeps it open—and expands the path for others. Ultimately, leadership isn't about being the loudest voice in the room or the name at the top of the org chart. It's about showing up every day, doing the work, and holding yourself to a higher standard. Bernstein's insights serve as a reminder that greatness leaves clues—and that those clues are often hidden in plain sight. Watch the full episode on YouTube. What's the most powerful tool a leader has? It's not a business strategy or a software program. It's their own self-awareness. In a recent conversation with author Justin Long, a key theme emerged: The path to exceptional leadership starts with an internal journey. By understanding your own emotional patterns and motivations, you can make the shift from reactive to intentional leadership. This is about being deliberate in your decisions and actions, rather than just responding to external pressures. Once you know yourself, you can truly see your team. Every person is different, and the most effective leaders understand these differences. Using personality frameworks and simply asking questions can help you communicate better and empower people to do what they do best.
Are your leaders truly ready for growth — or are they the reason your business is stuck? In Part 4 of our Growing Up Your Business series, Patrick and Patsy uncover a hidden growth killer: leadership immaturity. Too many companies promote top performers into leadership roles without preparing them for the very different work of coaching, delegating, and empowering others. The result? Bottlenecks, stalled execution, and frustration at every level.

Public failures and fumbles are painful to say the least. I've recently had a handful of clients come to me feeling crushed after making a mistake, fumbling, or failing publicly. The most prominent outcome in all of their stories? SHAME. Their instinctual behavior to manage the shame? Hide, deny, or deflect. Fun fact, people don't actually trust leaders who never admit to making mistakes. Mistakes are a demonstration of humanity, authenticity, and vulnerability. We trust people who we see as human, fallible, and REAL. We trust people who aren't afraid to take accountability. We trust people who don't shy away from saying sorry. At the end of the day, our public mistakes don't have to be the end of our credibility. In fact, they can become a powerful part of the evolution of our growth and credibility as a leader. In this episode, I'm digging into how public fumbles can actually make you a better leader, and I'll walk you through the four steps (borrowed from restorative justice practices) to move through mistakes in a way that builds, rather than breaks, your credibility: Take responsibility for your part in the mess. Apologize for any harm done. Share and demonstrate what you've learned. Commit to the steps you'll take to do better next time. By taking these steps, you are modeling humility, integrity, strength, grace, and a healthy sense of ego. When you model these things, people trust you MORE. People see you as more credible and authentic. People feel more connected to you. You become the kind of leader people remember and emulate. I'll also talk about how to let go of the shame of failure as an essential step for moving forward. The reality is, being a great leader is far more about being real than being perfect. Processing the shame is part of being real and giving yourself the grace to be imperfect. If you've ever found yourself in the spotlight for the wrong reasons—or feared what might happen if you do—this conversation will give you a roadmap for navigating those moments with integrity, humility, and strength. Last year, Google invited me to come lead trainings for Aging Awareness Week. This was a truly enjoyable opportunity to work with some brilliant leaders. When I asked about who to expect in the audience, I expected to be told, “People over 55.” Instead, I was told, “This ERG is for folks over 40.” 40! I don't think of 40 as “aging” just yet. But, I guess it is when society and culture start to stigmatize us, isn't it?? If you are a woman over 40 who is done shrinking and ready to lead with the clarity, power, and confidence that comes from your decades of wisdom, with zero apologies, this episode is for you! In this episode, I'm speaking directly to women over 40 who are ready to start leading with the full force of their lived experience. I know what it feels like to be in rooms where youth, speed, and loud voices are mistaken for leadership - but I'm here to tell you that your depth, clarity, wisdom, perspective, and emotional intelligence are exactly what's needed right now. We're not the past. We are the future of work. And, data backs this up: 42% of labor force growth in the next decade will come from people 55 and older, mostly women. Together, we'll explore how to navigate the double bind of age and gender, where you're expected to stay relevant but not be perceived as “too much.” I identify the forces at play (such as the intersectionality of ageism and sexism) and provide tools to help you reclaim your space with power and intention. You'll hear how your ability to read a room, speak with clarity, and lead for legacy, not ego, is your greatest asset. Your ability to listen deeply, ask better questions, and build meaningful collaborative (not competitive) relationships? That's the edge younger leaders are still learning. This episode is your reminder that you don't need to fight for a seat at the table—you are the table. Your leadership is expansive, rooted, sturdy, and deeply needed. So if you've been waiting for permission to own the room, this is it.
