Ever wonder what happens when the person keeping everything together… falls apart? Spoiler: it's not good. This week, we're diving into the unpaid, undervalued, and often invisible labor of caregiving—who does it, who's burning out, and why society pretends it's not happening until it's too late. From Gene Hackman & Betsy Arakawa's story to Bruce Willis's wife Emma Hemming Willis calling out caregiving burnout, we break down the brutal reality of care work. Also: why home health workers make less than fast food employees, why women are expected to handle it all, and why we're all one crisis away from disaster. Oh, and The Sims somehow makes an appearance. You're welcome.

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, also known as BIPOC Mental Health Month, and raises awareness of the challenges that affect the mental health of racial and ethnic minority groups. This month was developed to honor the efforts of Bebe Moore Campbell, an American author, journalist, teacher and mental health advocate, who was driven to bring awareness to the unique mental health struggles of racial and ethnic minority communities through her personal experiences with a family member's mental illness. In today's episode of Psych Talk, I provide some statistics on BIPOC mental health, discuss unique challenges and barriers that BIPOC individuals face with regard to mental health and access to mental health care, and discuss things we can do on an individual, community, and public health level to bring awareness to and advocate for change that will help reduce the inequalities BIPOC individuals face. Further, as I am not BIPOC, I provide some resources and accounts of individuals to follow on social media that are amazing resources to learn more from. I've been thinking about mental health a lot recently. Especially around the holidays, I found myself thinking about my own personal experiences. I've been really trying to understand the stigma around mental health and wellness as I dive into my own mental health journey, but I've also been thinking about the larger impacts that mental health has on our society. Being in the public eye and having a large social media following, there are a lot of challenges I've faced emotionally and adjustments I've had to make to my way of living. People who are safe behind a keyboard can be cruel, and I didn't truly realize how bad they can get until gaining that following. Recently on the podcast, I've been talking to some mental health professionals on the different types of challenges people are facing, as well as the stigmas that are rooted deeper than just the top-level feelings. I've been a proponent that we should share more about mental health so that we can normalize it, but as I've been talking with more experts through this podcast, I've learned that this is only one of many things we need to be doing to destigmatize mental health conversations. Dr. Han Ren came to the United States as a child and faced a lot of the normal mental health challenges that kids do growing up. However, she also had to deal with challenges that were specific to her being an immigrant. As she got older, Dr. Han realized that there are different types of mental health challenges that people of different identities face. She's dedicated her career to helping people understand the feelings that they have toward their identity aren't always going to be the same. She helps people transfer their feelings of shame into positive action toward racial justice. Dr. Han is an expert on integrating anti-racism and self-care into mental health by helping others understand the role identity plays in mental health. We're going to talk about her views, her personal experiences as an immigrant, the impacts of identity and race have on mental health, and the ways that we can support one another. With her lived experiences and medical background, listening to Dr. Han is a great starting point to understanding this often difficult topic. Dr. Liz hangs out with Dr. Han Ren, Licensed Psychologist & Public Speaker, and chats about the various aspects of non-monogamy, including what the term “non-monogamy” actually means, and the multiple lifestyle choices that fall under this umbrella term. Dr. Han discusses her recent decision to explore non-monogamy with her partner, as well as the history of events that led to this decision. Dr. Liz and Dr. Han openly discuss together similar previous life experiences of struggling with monogamy and commitment, that has historically led to feeling defective and as though there was something “wrong” with them. They explore the impact of their upbringing and attachment styles on their relational functioning and provide a very relatable outlook on a non-monogamous lifestyle.

Dr. Han Ren (she/they) is deeply rooted in Liberation-oriented, anti-oppressive, culturally informed therapy. In this time of global upheaval and collective trauma many people have experienced increasing amounts of isolation. Social media is one of the places people turn when they feel alone. Han's widely viewed content on social media centers on liberating the idea that healing has to look a certain way, especially for often historically overlooked people and communities. Normalization goes a long way in undoing our collective experience of aloneness. In this gentle yet confronting conversation, Han guides us towards 3 moment to moment healing practices, accessible to us all: check in with your body, say what you mean/mean what you say, and repair. Dr. Han Ren discusses her conceptualization of cultural humility as a framework or lens she uses when conducting clinical work. Within this multicultural framework a key premise is to remember “I don't know what I don't know.” Dr. Ren and the hosts reflect on the importance of remaining open to recognizing - and admitting - when they don't know something and how to seek out the knowledge or education necessary to provide culturally-appropriate care. For most of us, mental health feels like a very individualized issue. However, have you ever stopped to think about how your mental health intersects with the world at large and the social injustice you are seeing in it? Today's guest has put tons of time and effort into learning about the intersection of mental health and social injustice. She is working on the front lines of expanding what's happening in the therapy room to the rest of the world we live in. Her name is Dr. Han Ren. As I shared in previous episodes, I've learned so much from therapists on Instagram and Dr. Han Ren is one of them. Not only is she a psychologist and therapist but she's also a speaker and educator. Her goal is to decolonize mental health. Today we are talking all about this work that she does. Whether you come from a place of privilege and want to learn how to expand your mindset on your mental health or you come from a place of marginalization and need support and healing, you will benefit greatly from this conversation. Tune in to hear from the vibrant Dr. Han Ren. Show Highlights: All about the work Dr. Ren is doing. The kind of clients she works with. Why many children of immigrants grow up to be high-achievers and perfectionists. What pushes these clients to start getting therapy. How to balance healing your mental health and healing the brokenness in the world. How systematic injustice disproportionately hurts the mental health of people of color. The dangers of physical punishment. How many people of color confuse culture with generational trauma. Why we should always believe a person of color if they say an act of violence was about race. How to become a co-conspirator instead of a “savior” when coming from a position of power. The pushback on these things in the mental health space. Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C interviews Dr. Han Ren (she/they) who is doing big things on social media to normalize C-PTSD symptoms, promote liberatory psychology and anti-oppression work and show that being human is not a problem - even if you're a mental health professional. In fact, as a mental health professional it can be an asset to share your lived experience. Dr. Han Ren is the co-owner of Pivot Psychology in Austin, Texas. She has a background in school psychology and primarily works with high achieving young adults at present. In this conversation she explained the concepts of liberation focused psychology and anti carceral movements and provided some resources for listeners to learn more via Instagram accounts; and she and Laura discussed how therapists may inadvertently shame clients due to our own fears and lack of understanding of the most effective ways to help clients change coping strategies which were once helpful, but now cause problems. Han shares a compassionate perspective on the function of “maladaptive” coping strategies, seeing them as adaptations which helped the individual survive during traumatic experiences. She talks about how our behavioral interventions that aren't relational can cause clients to feel shame and then use masking instead of feeling safe to show up authentically and actually receive the help they're coming to therapy for.
