Oppressive, barren, and silent darkness provides the context for Christmas. In the midst of dark days we can be tempted to doubt the promises of God. Yet, into this darkness the Lord sent his angelic messenger to bring good news of God's faithfulness to fulfill his promised salvation in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the faithful One who never doubted the word of God his Father. Jesus is the light that shines in the darkness, the Word made flesh. He came to tear down the curtain so that doubters like us may enter into his presence now and forever!

In episode 146, Nicky Billou helps us explore the concept of oppressive spaces leading to suffering. As a child, Nicky's father recognized that remaining in Iran could become dangerous for their family, so he worked to move his family out before things got worse. Though he was saved from that oppressive space, Nicky discovered that hardship remained ahead, whether it was acclimating to a new culture, wrestling with the wounds of religion, or navigating the challenges of his personal life. His journey has led him to recognize that suffering is a part of life... but Jesus can be too. How has God sustained you in oppressive spaces? Gentlemen... behold! A new lean and mean episode of Terminus has arrived now that The Black Metal Guy has returned from Parts Unknown, fattened on the riches of distant lands. What better way to celebrate than with two down-the-line black metal records? We can have a little shrieking, just as a treat. First up is Ateiggär from the Helvetic Underground Committee, a group of Swiss artists we've been following on the show for some time now. Ateiggär reaches back to late 90s and early 00s Scandinavian black metal like Kvist and Old Man's Child for its riffing style but adds in the tasteful theatrics of synth, sample, and clean vocal for spice. The aggregate effect is something like Rotting Christ by way of the frozen north, delivering on a promise of epic and ancient tones well at home in that era's more obscure circles. Following is the return of Oppressive Descent whose 2020 record ended up on TBMG's album of the year list- does the new one stack up? Most certainly. What follows is well within the project's established wheelhouse but distilled and refined in exceptional fashion. This band's moment to moment riffcraft is nearly unmatched in high-flying (and skull-crushing) consistency, and the reduction of the number of influences at play has only sharpened its attack. Who would have guessed that from Portland would emerge the year's best French black metal record? 0:00:00 - Intro 0:04:49 - Ateiggär - Tyrannemord (Eisenwald) 0:46:12 - Interlude - 122 Stab Wounds - “Hunting Humans” fr. The Deity of Perversion (Head Not Found, 1996) 0:50:25 - Oppressive Descent - Spite is My Scepter, Blood is My Crown (Inferna Profundus Records) 1:40:01 - Outro - Chemin de Haine - “Le Royaume Maudit” fr. How can youth workers disciple students in sexual purity without avoiding the pitfalls of "purity culture?" Dean Inserra recently published an excellent book on that question. This episode's questions include: What was well-intentioned about youth ministry's efforts through the “Purity Culture” of the 90's and what can we learn from that - and what are some warnings for us to avoid?  Section two of your book walks through seven lies that are rampant in our culture. Which of these lies are particularly relevant for youth workers? The true love waits pledge talk about “purity until marriage.” But purity is about more than “purity until marriage,” as if purity becomes unnecessary once you're married. What does the Bible teach about purity? When we feel impure because of our own sexual sin or because of what's been done to us, what does the gospel have to say? How has this book helped you rethink the way you talk about sexuality with your own kids? Order Dean's latest, "Pure: Why the Bible's Plan for Sexuality Isn't Outdated, Irrelevant, or Oppressive." DearSA is a non-profit organisation which created a platform through which citizens could participate directly in influencing policy, legislative amendments and proposals. Hutchinson says if the Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorist and Related Activities Amendment Bill passes as is, it could see organisations like DearSA being labelled as a terrorist organisation under incredibly vague definitions of seeking to undermine the state. He told BizNews correspondent Michael Appel there is a danger of creeping authoritarianism as existing legislation is almost perfectly adequate but simply lacks implementation by the government. In The Rise of the New Puritans, Commentary Magazine associate editor Noah Rothman explains how, in pursuit of a better world, a relatively new and fervent strain of progressivism, in a “burst of moral enthusiasm” is ruining the very things which make life worth living by attempting to craft a society full of verbal trip wires and digital witch hunts. Football? Too violent. Fusion food? Appropriation. The nuclear family? Oppressive. As the social scientist Yuval Levin wrote in a review of the book, what's interesting about this New Puritanism is that “it is not rooted in a Christian ethic, at least not explicitly, and therefore that its worldly severity is not moderated by humility before the divine.”In response to this phenomenon, Rothman encourages us to spurn a movement whose primary goal has become limiting happiness. The book uncovers the historical roots of this war on fun and reminds us of the freedom and personal fulfillment at the heart of the American experiment.Subscribe to our podcastsRise of the New Puritans | Amazon Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. We're constantly scrambling to come up with fresh, compelling stories to illustrate our nonprofit missions, but are we being mindful? On this episode of What the Fundraising we're pausing to take a hard look at content – and the harms our words can inadvertently cause. My guest Natalia Sanyal is applying a humanity-centered, anti-oppressive lens to the art and craft of copywriting. Having seen first-hand in her commercial career how even the most mindful of us can perpetuate hurtful language, she's bringing tools to help raise our consciousness.  When she performs her copy audits on the average business, she uncovers terms that are exclusive, demeaning, or that undermine the organization's core values. In this episode, we are untangling all of this, without judgment or shame. Natalia believes we're all figuring it out together and the first step is just to get honest. Among the topics we discuss: Manipulative writing tactics that don't yield the results nonprofits desire. Positive ways to use psychological insight to secure donor participation and retention. How to avoid words and stories that can trigger negative responses. Why informed decision-making (or conscious choice) is important. What it means to build long-term trust with donors through honesty (not scare tactics).  Steps you can take to generate copy without generating harm. What it means to be an ethical, trauma-informed storyteller.  You'll come away from this episode with thoughts and ideas to ensure your messaging is really capturing – rather than undermining – your organization's ethos and achievements. “It's all about not being fake and being transparent,” says Natalia, and it starts with intentional conversations like this one! Trusting God in a waiting season, plus pursuing sexual purity with godly motives, and handling conflict well in dating. Featured musical artist: Je'kob ( https://www.facebook.com/iamjekob ) Roundtable: When God Tells You to Wait What does it look like to trust God's plan in a season of waiting? Our guests discuss times they've waited on God in their careers, relationships and faith journeys — even when doing so was hard. They'll also address how to balance trusting God with taking action toward something you want. Culture: Lessons From Purity Culture Purity culture has gotten a bad rap — some of it for good reason. But don't throw the proverbial baby out with the bath water. Purity culture placed a high value on God's design for sexuality and its place within marriage. That said, pastor and author Dean Inserra acknowledges the movement's shortcomings. While we should always prioritize sexual integrity, he reminds us that obedience around our sexuality shouldn't become an idol in our efforts to serve God. Dean reframes the conversation around God's truth and grace, allowing us to submit our sexuality to God for His glory and our good. Welcome back to the Bill Bradley Collective, where we raise the curtain on our seventh season, live from the Social Bar and Kitchen in downtown New London, with an examination of the Saudi-bankrolled LIV Golf tour in the context of our season-long theme of “sportswashing” and the presence of oppressive oligarchies across sports. LIV Golf claims to want to change the landscape of professional golf in aspiring to host the world's best players, playing for the world's biggest purses, with a reduced 54-hole, no cut format while also introducing a team-scoring format. But LIV's on-course ambitions pale in comparison to their seemingly greater purpose: to legitimize the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the face of vast human rights' abuses and enhance their standing in the global economic world order. Professional golf marketed and weaponized as a means to cover for a regime of institutionalized oppression: the early legacy of the LIV Golf Tour. Your hosts set out on a conversation that explains the concept of “sportswashing,” contextualizes the movement to rival the incumbent PGA Tour with an autonomous so-called Super League, the success or lack thereof two events and a debut American event in, and what kind of impact this sordid venture will have down the road with respect to the future of professional golf and Saudi Arabia's global footprint. We thank The Social for hosting our maiden season 7 episode, fans and family, alike, for taking time out of their holiday weekend to join us live, and all of the listeners that have enabled us to even see a seventh season. Keep up with us, next week and beyond, on the Bill Bradley Collective.

Heather Mac Donald Discusses her Recent Articles. White Culling and Phantom Racism The Eric Metaxas Show Heather Mac Donald Mar 24 2022   Heather Mac Donald looks into how the left is distorting the present and rewriting the past with "white culling" and "phantom racism," prevalent now in our national institutions, including museums like the Art Institute of Chicago and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Eric Metaxas Show- https://metaxastalk.com/podcasts/   The Diversity Delusion: How Race and Gender Pandering Corrupt the University and Undermine Our Culture Sep 4, 2018 by Heather Mac Donald By the New York Times bestselling author: a provocative account of the attack on the humanities, the rise of intolerance, and the erosion of serious learning America is in crisis, from the university to the workplace. Toxic ideas first spread by higher education have undermined humanistic values, fueled intolerance, and widened divisions in our larger culture. Chaucer, Shakespeare and Milton? Oppressive. American history? Tyranny. Professors correcting grammar and spelling, or employers hiring by merit? Racist and sexist. Students emerge into the working world believing that human beings are defined by their skin color, gender, and sexual preference, and that oppression based on these characteristics is the American experience. Speech that challenges these campus orthodoxies is silenced with brute force. The Diversity Delusion argues that the root of this problem is the belief in America's endemic racism and sexism, a belief that has engendered a metastasizing diversity bureaucracy in society and academia. Diversity commissars denounce meritocratic standards as discriminatory, enforce hiring quotas, and teach students and adults alike to think of themselves as perpetual victims. From #MeToo mania that blurs flirtations with criminal acts, to implicit bias and diversity compliance training that sees racism in every interaction, Heather Mac Donald argues that we are creating a nation of narrowed minds, primed for grievance, and that we are putting our competitive edge at risk. But there is hope in the works of authors, composers, and artists who have long inspired the best in us. Compiling the author's decades of research and writing on the subject, The Diversity Delusion calls for a return to the classical liberal pursuits of open-minded inquiry and expression, by which everyone can discover a common humanity. Read more Other Formats: Audible Audiobook , Hardcover , Paperback   The War on Cops: How the New Attack on Law and Order Makes Everyone Less Safe Sep 19, 2017 by Heather Mac Donald  ( 1,517 ) Violent crime has been rising sharply in many American cities after two decades of decline. Homicides jumped nearly 17 percent in 2015 in the largest 50 cities, the biggest one-year increase since 1993. The reason is what Heather Mac Donald first identified nationally as the “Ferguson effect”: Since the 2014 police shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, officers have been backing off of proactive policing, and criminals are becoming emboldened. This book expands on Mac Donald's groundbreaking and controversial reporting on the Ferguson effect and the criminal-justice system. It deconstructs the central narrative of the Black Lives Matter movement: that racist cops are the greatest threat to young black males. On the contrary, it is criminals and gangbangers who are responsible for the high black homicide death rate. The War on Cops exposes the truth about officer use of force and explodes the conceit of “mass incarceration.” A rigorous analysis of data shows that crime, not race, drives police actions and prison rates. The growth of proactive policing in the 1990s, along with lengthened sentences for violent crime, saved thousands of minority lives. In fact, Mac Donald argues, no government agency is more dedicated to the proposition that “black lives matter” than today's data-driven, accountable police department. Mac Donald gives voice to the many residents of high-crime neighborhoods who want proactive policing. She warns that race-based attacks on the criminal-justice system, from the White House on down, are eroding the authority of law and putting lives at risk. This book is a call for a more honest and informed debate about policing, crime, and race. This is the message of Heather Mac Donald's new book, in which she brings her special brand of tough and honest journalism to the current war against the police. The anti-profiling crusade, she charges, thrives on an ignorance of policing and a willful blindness to the demographics of crime. In careful reports from New York and other major cities across the country, Ms. Mac Donald investigates the workings of the police, the controversy over racial profiling, and the anti-profiling lobby's harmful effects on black Americans. The reduction in urban crime, one of the nation's signal policy successes of the 1990s, has benefited black communities even more dramatically than white neighborhoods, she shows. By policing inner cities actively after long neglect, cops have allowed business and civil society to flourish there once more. But attacks on police, centering on false charges of police racism and racial profiling, and spearheaded by activists, the press, and even the Justice Department, have slowed the success and threaten to reverse it. Ms. Mac Donald looks at the reality behind the allegations and writes about the black cops you never heard about, the press coverage of policing, and policing strategies across the country. Her iconoclastic findings demolish the prevailing anti-cop orthodoxy. In this urgent new book, three astute observers argue that we have lost control of our southern border, so that the vast majority of our immigrants are now illegal Mexicans. Poor, uneducated, and unskilled, these newcomers add much less to the national wealth than they cost the taxpayers for their health care, the education of their children, and (too often) their incarceration. The Immigration Solution proposes a policy that admits skilled and educated people on the basis of what they can do for the country, not what the country can do for them. -----------------------------------------------------------------    Join us in our effort to free over 350 slaves.
