Favorite quotes of the episode: “In my mid-forties, I found myself outside of my comfort zone and I had the chance to connect with my inner voice and understand that the life I was living, wasn’t aligned with my personal values.” “The Athena Principles teach and inspire wellness through story.” “Celebrate, have fun and play and have a sense of adventure, because that’s what life is all about.” “Sometimes we don’t want to think about change, even when we know it’s necessary, because it forces you to look at the reality and the choices you’ve made that have led you to the place where you are. That’s a tough place to be.” “Your life wants to speak to you. Your still point is quieting the noise so you can hear your own wisdom.” “Presence plus Quiet is how you get to your still point.” Episode Overview In this episode, I talk with Kathy Robinson, a corporate executive turned author, teacher, and certified wellness coach. Kathy began her career on Wall Street and spent 15 years at a Fortune 250 company before retiring as its Chief Risk Officer and Chief Audit Executive.  After decades of assessing the wellness of corporations, she turned the lens from professional assessments to personal ones, becoming a certified coach and sharing her wellness journey and philosophy in her book, The Athena Principles:  Simple Wellness Practices for Overworked Professionals.  TOPICS What is wholehearted wellness and discussion of the spectrum of wellness that includes vitality (exercise and nutrition), flow (simplifying, energetic flow and expression) and connection (spirituality and relationships) Kathy’s Journey as a busy professional: Mind, Body, and Spirit How to show up for yourself with optimism and enthusiasm. Wellness Tools, Principles, and Practice Setting ourselves up for a good sleep routine! Changing mindset to run an ultra-marathon at 54 years old when 20 years before, 1 mile was a challenge. How to connect to our still point, even with all of the COVID-19 chaos, there is still opportunity, and why it’s important. 5 Questions Segment Q1. We know that the most successful and happy people have a morning routine, what do you do each morning or evening that sets your day up for success? Water, coffee, write, meditate, make my bed, exercise, and get ready for work. Q2. What's your definition of Success? Purpose and Impact. I have a saying in my office, “Let the life you live be the lesson you teach,” and that’s my daily reminder to live with purpose. Q3. What's your definition of Happiness? It’s about living wholeheartedly. Fully embracing who I am, showing up with an open heart, open hands, and doing things that light me up with the people I love. Q4. What do you know now that you wish you would have known 10 years ago? I would tell my type-A perfectionist younger self three things: 1) Relax, it’s all going to work out and even better than you can anticipate. 2) Sometimes you have to let go of things you love to let new things in and to grow and that’s okay. 3) Don’t forget to enjoy the journey, it’s a lovely ride. And that’s what my 75-year-old self would tell me today, to live with ease, let go with grace, and just have a blast and enjoy it all. Q5. What do you think is the biggest issue facing busy professionals today? Presence. To be aware but not be distracted by the past or the future. Presence plus Quiet is how you get to your still point. “The circumstances in your life don’t change first. You've got to change first and decide that your happiness comes above all else.” Diane Forster (12:16-12:36) There are a lot of unhappy people in the world. Statistics show that approximately 90% of people aren’t happy in life. They aren’t getting the joy and satisfaction they could be out of their work, relationships, and other areas in their lives.  I went through my own period of unhappiness. I was unhappy in my marriage. I had a good career, but I couldn’t help feeling unfulfilled. I wasn't honoring myself and I didn't love myself. That state of unhappiness eventually led me to a suicide attempt that I now look back on as a moment of awakening. It was the start of a new path of healing myself through personal development, self-help, and a spiritual awakening. “When you choose happiness first, create awareness about it, and move in that direction, then the circumstances change.”  - Diane Forster  (11:47-11:56) The Biggest Myth You Need to Dismiss  There’s a myth that keeps unhappy people from making the transformation they need to reclaim the joy in life. This myth states that in order for you to be happy, your circumstances need to change. But it’s not your circumstances that have to change. You have to change first. You need to first see, feel, speak, and visualize your happiness in order for your circumstances to change. Change is an inside job. It has to come from within you first. Each and every day, you have opportunities to choose happiness in every moment.  Three Keys for Getting Back to Happiness It’s one thing to choose happiness, but how exactly do you get there? There are three fundamental steps to creating happiness in your life.  Get specific about what you want in life. What does happiness look like to you? How will you know when you’ve reached happiness? Can you imagine how it will feel? Many people have been unhappy for so long that they can’t even imagine it. It’s up to you to get crystal clear on your definition of happiness. Give yourself permission to be happy.  The only person stopping you from being happy is you. Are you not giving yourself permission to be happy? You may think you’re not allowed to want the things you want. You might even be confused about what you want without realizing it. When you give yourself permission to be happy, you allow the things that create happiness to come into your life.  “Your past is behind you, and your future is unknown. The moment you decide to make a change and take inspired action, the universe goes out of its way to meet you and exceed your expectations.”  - Diane Forster  (18:07-18:20) Remove things from your life.  Many of us have been convinced to think that we need to bring more things into our lives in order to be happy. This could be a new car or partner, more money, or a bigger home. But sometimes you need to remove some of those things to achieve happiness. Eliminating the things that are chipping away at your happiness creates space. That space allows you to create a new way of being, thinking, and feeling. Learn to remove whatever’s getting in the way of you and the life you want.  With a growing number of people reporting that their unhappy, and with suicide rates on the rise, we need keep ourselves from falling into the unhappiness trap. By focusing on these three keys to creating a new life, you can begin building the work and home life that fulfill you so that you can contribute more to yourself and to the people you love.  How to get involved To learn more about The Happiness Formula visit www.DianeForster.com/TheHappinessFormula For more information about working with Diane and to gain access to valuable resources visit dianeforster.com.  You can contact Diane for coaching information at info@dianeforster.com. In today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast we talk to Miyoko Schinner, vegan chef, cookbook author and television cooking show host. She has been promoting a vegan lifestyle for over 30 years. Her newly released cookbook, “Artisan Vegan Cheese” was voted top 5 vegan cookbooks for 2012. Miyoko teaches in the McDougall Program and at major festivals around the country. In fact, we had the privilege of watching Miyoko’s cooking demo at Healthfest in Marshall, Texas last week and we sampled her AMAZING vegan cheeses from Miyoko’s Kitchen. Our intention was to talk vegan cooking with Miyoko, get some hacks for the pantry and about her Japanese heritage. We did get to all that, but we also heard so much about Miyoko’s connection with animals, how animals and humans differ in the way we eat and how we build community around food. We hope you enjoy the show!   In this episode we discuss: Becoming vegan Goats Vegan challenges Vegan food can be beautiful and satisfying Not giving up fine foods Miyoko’s Kitchen and Creamery Going Raw How animals and humans differ in the kitchen Building community around food Tricks for stocking your pantry Mochi for Strength, Prosperity, Good Health and Happiness It’s Nacho Business   Links to things we mentioned: Miyoko Schinner’s ,   – Book  – Book Landscape Gardening –               Don’t forget to contact us at  with your question for our “Hey Plant Trainers” segment!     Do you want to create lifelong healthy eating habits for you or your family?
