During this episode with Dr. Jessie Mahoney, we talk about how we can change the stories we tell ourselves, retrain our nervous system and create more mindful practices that can help us improve our lives. In addition, we address the following topics: Choosing to change yourself can create shifts in your relationship. Understanding the griefor depression each of you may feel and understanding. Getting clear about things out of your control that can't be changed. Retraining our own nervous system first. Parasympathetic nervous system is focused on rest and digest. Sympathetic nervous system is running from the tiger. We can feel bewildered and respond or react at different speeds. In adrenal depletion we just react and are not pausing. Fight or flight response releases cortisol. Self compassion releases dopamine and oxytocin which feels good. Learn different breathing practices to see what works for you.  This can help you be less reactive. Restorative yoga can be very helpful. We have held onto stories that may be misinterpretations. How can we create positive stories and remember the things you fell in love with and focus on how you're the same. Understand your neurodiverse relationship is going to look different than other relationships. Create a positive story about the way your partner shows you love.  Reframing stories can be so helpful. Tell the story that we're both doing the best we can.  Judge the effort, not just the outcome! Change the way you think and then determine if you need to make a change. Determine what your non-negotiables are and after doing that you may realize that you are no longer compatible. When you're in a state of constant frustration you can't be fully invested. Focus on both of your individual strengths. What is your partner good at that you don't like and vice versa? Generosity of thinking and assuming good intent can help you get out of a tug of war with your partner. Create a toolbox for moving through the world more smoothly. Mindfulness is acceptance (even if you don't like what is happening). You can have acceptance and still be angry or have other feelings and this can empowering. What you practice grows. Be patient with yourself and wour partners.  Our partners may have a different nervous system pace. Allow yourself and your partner to be angry. Accepting and not liking and still listening is so important. 69% of our problems in our relationships are perpetual and 31% are solvable. Ask yourself-“What would love do?” You don't always have to understand. Self compassion is a life raft. Why do we crave junk food when we're stressed and what can we do about it? Choosing healthy foods can feel like a losing battle when we're stressed out, causing us to crave fatty, sugary comfort foods. Our hormones and emotions spiral out of control. The root of the issue can be traced back to chronic stress. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Research Report: Sparse Autoencoders find only 9/180 board state features in OthelloGPT, published by Robert AIZI on March 5, 2024 on LessWrong. Abstract A sparse autoencoder is a neural network architecture that has recently gained popularity as a technique to find interpretable features in language models ( Cunningham et al, Anthropic's Bricken et al). We train a sparse autoencoder on OthelloGPT, a language model trained on transcripts of the board game Othello, which has been shown to contain a linear representation of the board state, findable by supervised probes. The sparse autoencoder finds 9 features which serve as high-accuracy classifiers of the board state, out of 180 findable with supervised probes (and 192 possible piece/position combinations). Across random seeds, the autoencoder repeatedly finds "simpler" features concentrated on the center of the board and the corners. This demonstrates that current techniques for sparse autoencoders may fail to find a large majority of the interesting, interpretable features in a language model. Introduction There has been a recent flurry of research activity around Sparse Autoencoders for Dictionary Learning, a new approach to finding interpretable features in language models and potentially "solving superposition" ( Sharkey et al, Anthropic's Bricken et al, Cunningham et al.). But while this technique can find features which are interpretable, it is not yet clear if sparse autoencoders can find particular features of interest (e.g., features relevant to reducing AI risk). This research report seeks to answer the question of whether sparse autoencoders can find a set of a-priori existing, interesting, and interpretable features in the OthelloGPT language model. OthelloGPT, as the name suggests, is a language model trained on transcripts of the board game Othello to predict legal moves, but was found to also linearly encode the current board state ( Nanda, Hazineh et al). That is, for each of the 64 board positions, there were "board-state features" (linear mappings from the residual stream to R^3) that classify the state at that position between [is empty] vs [has active-player's piece] vs [has enemy's piece], and these board-state features can be found by the supervised training of a linear probe. These board-state features are an exciting testbed for sparse autoencoders because they represent a set of "called-shot" features we hope to find, and which are extremely interpretable and correspond to natural human thinking[1]. If the sparse autoencoder can find these features, this is some evidence that they will find relevant and important features in language models. Conversely, if the sparse autoencoders can't find these features, that indicates a limitation of the method, and provides a test case where we can adjust our training methods until we can find them. Overview Here we: Train an OthelloGPT model from scratch Train a linear probe to classify the board states (replicating Hazineh et al) from an intermediate layer of OthelloGPT. Train a sparse autoencoder on the same layer of OthelloGPT Assess whether the features found by the sparse autoencoder include the linear encoding of the current board state that the linear probe is able to find. Retrain the sparse autoencoder with different random seeds, and analyze which features are found. Methods Training OthelloGPT We first trained an OthelloGPT model from scratch, following the approach of Li et al. Our model is a 25M parameter, 8-layer, decoder-only transformer, with residual stream dimension d_model=512 (identical to Li et al's model). It is trained to do next-token-prediction of random transcripts of Othello games, with each possible move being encoded as a separate token, resulting in a vocabulary size of 66 (64 from the positions on the boards, plus 2 speci...

The Winter War

This is episode 9 and we're swinging back to the Karelian Isthmus to focus on what was going on through the third week of January 1940. Earlier in the month the disgraced Soviet Leningrad Military district was reformed and renamed the Northwestern Front and Stalin installed Semyon Konstantinovich Timoshenko as the commander. He was a hard man, flinty eyes, shaven head, powerful voice — a tough man for a tough job. Timoshenko was an idealogue but no fool and agreed to lead the Northwestern Front assaults but only if Stalin agreed that he would not be held personally liable for the coming butcher's bill. Cracking the Mannerheim Line along the Isthmus was going to be challenging after more than a month of battles had shown the Finns to be more than a match for the Red Army. Timoshenko's chief of staff was the architect of the Russian victory over the Japanese in Mongolia, Georgi Zhukov. The Leningrad commander Zhdanov was demoted to political commissar of the campaign, without any operational power at all. He had been roundly defeated by the Finns since the start of the Winter War in November 1939 and now his message to the troops on the frontline changed. Previously Russian propaganda had centred around the narrative that the Finnish working class needed saving, now Zhdanov was going to focus on Russian patriotism and pride instead of the drum-beat of party slogans. The country had been shamed in the eyes of the world and needed to redeem itself and the Northwestern Front fighters were going to be at the forefront of this reformed war. When the Red Army returned to the Mannerheim line in early February the men were going to be shouting “For the glory of the Fatherland” not “For Stalin”. While things were looking ominous, there was much for the Finns to savour. One of these was the extraordinary Simo Hayha, the White Death as he became known. He was a sniper, some say the most lethal sniper to have ever lived. He served with the 6th Company 34th infantry regiment and was based on the Kollaa Front. Hayha's confirmed kills of 542 Russians in the space of 100 days has never been eclipsed. He passed the rest of his life hunting and farming, and the White Death died in April 2002 at the age of 97. One that we need to ask ourselves is, “Was the initial training insuffient, ineffective, or would we be better served to focus our attention elsewhere to create lasting performance improvement?” In this Gapology Radio podcast episode we explore this common topic.

You just launched a new retreat, and no one signed up. Your new course is online, and no one bought it. These are perfectly normal things that can and will happen to any business, but what do you make these things mean? In today's episode, I'm talking about how we deal with setbacks, what kind of stories we tell ourselves about our business and about us when things go South, and how to retrain our minds to stop punishing ourselves for stuff that is out of our control. For us to feel safe, our brain needs to make sense of things, spot possible threats, and design escape routes in case we need them. But we must remember the brain can be overprotective, like a helicopter parent. It can go like this: "Two people unsubscribed from your newsletter, your content is not good enough, you're not good enough at this, you should stop exposing yourself and suffering, quit trying the entrepreneur thing." Throughout this episode, you'll hear my four top tips to retrain your mind and stop creating apocalyptic scenarios every time something goes bad with your business; you'll also learn the importance of giving yourself some grace and how to create different stories in your head. That's right, you are going to learn all about hunger from the author of the book, “I'm So Effing Hungry: Why We Crave What We Crave – and What to Do About It” You'll also find out why focusing on your hunger is more important and effective than going on yet another diet. Dr. Shah is a double board-certified medical doctor and nutrition expert with training from Cornell, Columbia, and Harvard universities. Her background includes internal medicine and allergy/immunology. During this discussion, she shares why she believes that you can diet all you want, but diets don't work—and, worse yet, they keep you addicted. They also keep you hungry and keep you unhappy. She helps you lean into your body signals and really understand what's happening. She developed a 5-step program for battling excessive hunger and food cravings by harnessing the power of psychobiotics and intermittent fasting. She combined scientific studies with Western and Ayurvedic approaches so you can:REPLENISH your body by eating more nourishing, mood-balancing foods.REWIRE your brain to undo the addiction pathways and cravings for processed foods.RESET your circadian rhythm to activate hunger hormones that reduce your appetite.REFRESH with a good night's sleep, using proven good sleep habits used by the U.S. military.RETRAIN your body with exercise that regulates key neurotransmitters that influence our hunger response. You'll want to take notes on this extremely helpful and actionable interview.
