I don't know many farmers. This country used to be an agrarian society, but today fewer than 2% of Americans are farmers. This was not the case in antiquity. In antiquity, making a living effectively meant growing crops. The Almighty makes seemingly unreasonable demands of us when it asks us to cease working the field each seventh year -- the Shemittah. Moreover, every 50th year - a year that follows a Shemittah - we are commanded to refrain from working the field for a second year in a row. What is the rationale for this mitzvah? How is this mitzvah intimately connected to the central revelation? In general, what is the secret of the seven? You will find answers to these questions and many more in this edition of the Parsha Podcast. You will also find the remedy for feelings of inadequacy. In short, this podcast is worth your time.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. The kingdom of God doesn't look like what most people expect—and Jesus makes that clear through seven powerful parables in Matthew 13. In this message, we uncover the "secrets" of how God's kingdom really works: it starts small like a mustard seed, grows quietly like hidden yeast, demands full surrender like a priceless treasure, and advances even when the world seems messy and mixed. Jesus shows us that the kingdom is hidden but unstoppable, quiet but powerful, and worth everything we have. God is working in ways we can't always see, calling us to trust Him, treasure Him, share His truth, and guard our hearts against familiarity that blinds us to His presence. Never despise small beginnings. The King is at work—and His kingdom is breaking in, one life at a time.

#182 - Two simple questions changed everything for Bernard "Chalky" White. Growing up under the shadow of an abusive father who regularly beat both him and his mother, Chalky developed a survival mechanism that unfortunately led him to abandon his education completely by age 13. With zero qualifications at 16, he joined the police cadets and eventually became a London "Bobby," though his heart was never truly in law enforcement.During his nine-year police career, Chalky witnessed unspeakable horrors, including a gruesome murder of a child and two near-death experiences where fellow officers failed to intervene. But fate intervened in late 1973 when a friend casually invited him skiing. Watching instructors and seasonal workers enjoying mountain life in Andora sparked something profound within him. That's when Chalky stumbled upon two transformative questions that would guide his decisions forevermore: "What if I don't?" followed by "What if I do?" The emotional shift between considering negative consequences and positive possibilities gave him the courage to resign from the police force and pursue a completely different life. The path wasn't straightforward. Chalky faced brutal rejection, including being told he would "never be a ski instructor" and later that his "wrong body shape" (bowed legs) made certification impossible. To fund his dreams, he sold encyclopedias door-to-door in Germany, managed a discotheque in Morocco, and took whatever jobs kept his skiing ambitions alive. His persistence paid off. After failing multiple British certification attempts, he traveled to New Zealand where an instructor showed him how to adapt his technique to his physique. He passed on his first try and has spent decades teaching skiing, authoring the successful "Seven Secrets of Skiing" and recently publishing his memoir "Keep Chewing the Granite: How Two Questions Can Change Your Life."Chalky's story demonstrates how asking yourself the right questions can completely transform your perspective and ultimately your life. What decisions might change for you if you asked yourself "What if I don't?" followed by "What if I do?" Try this simple but powerful technique today and see where it leads you.To get a copy of Chalky's book check out Amazon! Want to be a guest on Journey with Jake? This week we're talking about fathers. In his book The Seven Secrets of Effective Fathers, Ken Canfield tells Dads that the first secret to fathering effectiveness is commitment. Commitment involves much more than claiming your child as your own. This commitment requires a conscious choice to be your child's father, along with resolving to work for your child's benefit. Fathers who choose not to commit are opening the door for someone or something else to raise their children. In today's youth culture, there are a variety of fathering surrogates stepping in to assume the role of Dad. It could be social media, the school system, the government, or your daughter's boyfriend. Consider these two facts: If you don't choose to father your children, someone else will. Ask God to help you do those things a dad should do for his children. Your investment in your kids will pay great dividends.

How do we redefine ambition and passion in a way that nourishes us — rather than depletes us?What happens when we shed the armor of who we think we should be… and meet who we actually are underneath? How might creativity, sexuality, and self-intimacy be woven together on the path to true freedom?Today, I'm joined by HeatherAsh Amara — author of nine books, including the bestselling Warrior Goddess Training and her latest, Wild, Willing, and Wise. About how to soften the grip of over-responsibility and perfectionism. About the connection between creativity, sexuality, and surrender — and how freedom often lives on the other side of fear.I hope this conversation invites you, as it did me, to consider: What if the way back to power isn't about striving harder, but about remembering who you are beneath the armor?Let's dive in.About HeatherAsh:HeatherAsh Amara is the author of nine books, including the bestselling Warrior Goddess Training, The Seven Secrets of Happy and Healthy Relationships with don Miguel Ruiz Jr., and her latest book Wild, Willing, and Wise.
