I've been involved in the creation and promotion of a number of athletic events, more specifically a cycling discipline called cyclocross. I've also participated in my fair share of events, from local road running races to Ironman and the Boston Marathon. I like to think that I have a decent understanding on the design of sporting events from the perspective of participants, promoter, and even spectator. When you are looking at these events from different perspectives, different elements become important. When designing them, it becomes important to take them all into account to create a successful experience. It can be a challenge to capture what these events are all about, especially to those who have no direct understanding of them. What is the allure? What draws people in? Why do people put themselves through it all? Portraying more obscure sporting events to a broader audience is a balancing act between over explaining what is going on and leaving spaces to draw people in. We can look at events like the Tour de France, professional hockey, Ironman, and other sports that don't have a broad audience, and as a result any coverage of it seems to try to overexplain itself. One of the trends we see in sports media is the telling of stories of those who are competing. One of the things that draws us into sports is the struggle inherent in it. The struggle against ourselves, the struggle against others, the struggle against the elements. And it is not just about the struggle, but as ABC sports famously said “The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” We learn about these things through how they are portrayed in sports media. On this episode of Experience by Design, we welcome Matt B. Davis of Obstacle Racing Media to the studio. I first heard of Matt on Marc Maron's WTF podcast where he was talking about his documentary World's Toughest Mudder. You'll hear references to his appearance on Marc's podcast in our conversation. As an endurance athlete, I recognized the struggle of communicating what it is we do and why it is we do it. So, I thought it would be fun to have him on and talk about the documentary he created, the culture of obstacle racing, and sports media for more fringe sports. Matt's desire for creative communication and entertainment led him to a variety of outlets. From comedy to blogging to podcasting and now videos, Matt talks about how he created a media presence for obstacle racing. For those who don't know, which is probably most of you, obstacle racing are events like Tough Mudders or Spartan Race. What becomes really fascinating about these events is the strong sense of support and community that is created by all those involved. Competitors helping one another overcome literal obstacles because they are all in this together. We talk about his journey from New England to the world of comedy. We explore his decision to create a content creation company for the emerging world of obstacle racing. We dig into how to create authentic content that doesn't pander to the world of clickbait. He emphasizes that it is not just about the money, but the challenges of being a content creator who does justice to the community that is being portrayed.

18 min Maureen does a Tough Mudder. Don't you just love that name? The way it sounds? Tough Mudder. Ok, so what is a Tough Mudder? It's a national phenomenon now for some time where people challenge themselves with an obstacle course. And yes, the obstacles are "tough" and some involve mud. Maureen hits the podcast after teaching a 6:30 AM Bikram hot yoga class and munching on breakfast tells a hilarious story about the legacy of tough mudding she discovers. Worth a listen. Doing hard things with other humans is a way to thrive. In Tough Mudder competitions you help fellow contestants. People face their fears. You see another person do it, and think: hey, I can do that. The competition builds confidence and resilience. Maybe you can do a certain obstacle this time, maybe you can do it next time. It's a competition that embraces Maureen's website and program, which she calls "Landscapes for Learning." Tough Mudders are special landscapes for learning, but everyday is also a landscape for learning. Enjoy Maureen's success and description of this competition. What landscape for learning are you traveling these days? Oh wait, you're reading this! Good for you! Booooo yaaaaa!

Adam Burns (@adamburnsadventure) is a personal trainer, adventure sports athlete and cancer survivor. His aim is to help people improve their quality of life through fitness, and inspire others to believe that we are capable of far more than we imagined.Adam challenged himself and a friend to participate in a Tough Mudder race: an outdoor obstacle course event that consists of challenges such as crawling through mud, climbing over obstacles, and battling the terrain. At first it was just a fun challenge, but it quickly became a new passion. He fell in love with the community and the physical and mental challenges these events presented. This evolved further to traveling to compete, and working towards taking on their signature event, The World's Toughest Mudder. In 2019 Adam began to feel unwell. His condition slowly worsened to the point he had to stop everything else to focus on his health. Several weeks later, he was diagnosed with brain cancer. After over a year of treatment including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, Adam is well on the road to recovery. The physical and mental challenges he endured through physical training and competing certainly played a role in his difficult recovery. Adam is now working towards building back his physical fitness from the ground up. There is a long road ahead but he is determined to get back to racing and doing what he loves by next season. He is also back to work as a trainer, and hoping to help inspire and coach others to achieve their fitness and life goals. This was a powerful episode, and there are many lessons to be learned and shared. You can contact Adam on IG or through his website www.resilientathletics.ca. Here is the recording from our latest #PEChat Radio Hour! For this episode, I connected with Mark Friedrich on Twitter Spaces. Mark Friedrich is an Adventure Education and Health Education teacher at Millburn High School in Millburn, New Jersey. Mark has been a member of Millburn's Health & PE Department for 16 years. During those years, he has created an Adventure Education program that is not only one of the largest in his state, it's also the envy of many educators out there (this guy included). Mark was named the 2016 NJAHPERD Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year and he was also the recipient of the 2021 SHAPE America Joy of Effort Award, which honors individuals who, by performance and style, have personified the concept that the effort made to enrich the goals and objectives of health and physical education, physical activity, dance, and sport is a labor of love, inspired by commitment and dedication. When he's not helping students through high-ropes courses, chasing snakes out of his teaching space, or participating in Tough Mudders, Mark travels across the US to present to local, state, and national organizations on the topics of teambuilding, icebreaker activities, problem solving, trust building, and adventure games. It was an absolute honour to have Mark as our guest for #PEChat Radio Hour and I'm so glad he got to melt our faces - or at least our ears - with his incredible passion for Adventure Education.

Issue 124 - Victor Zsasz Intro Erica Schultz Kickstarter Background (02:50) Victor Zsasz created by Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle in Batman: Shadow of the Bat #1 (June 1992) Formerly wealthy man, scion to a business empire - when his parents died, he sank into depression, and lost everything gambling - as he was preparing to kill himself, he encountered a vagrant who tried to rob him, and Victor said he realized the man was operating as a “robot” on base emotion and desire - he killed the vagrant to “free” him, and marked his body There is no MO to his choices - although he prefers to slice the neck, he will kill however he can, and ritualistically marks his body for each kill The number of kills must match the number of marks - marked himself after stabbing Alfred, only to discover Batman saved his life, and he said his skin was “crawling” because the tally was off Regularly escapes Arkham every time he is held there Considered by Batman to be the nemesis he hates the most Although he typically works alone, he does occasionally partner with other criminals - was working with/for Black Mask at one point, and during the War of Jokes & Riddles, he sided with the Riddler Issues (05:34) Nihilistic view of the world Ego to think of himself as a “savior” to others (11:00) Compulsion of marks (16:52) Kills because he enjoys it (24:15) Break (30:03) Plugs for BetterHelp, ITK, and Gail Simone A: This podcast is sponsored by BetterHelp. Treatment (31:52) In-universe - Use electrolysis to change the number of marks on his body and see what happens Out of universe - (36:03) Skit (43:49) Hello Victor, I’m Dr. Issues. - Hello Doctor. And which professional school of therapy do you subscribe to? You appear to be too modern for Skinner or Freud. I peg you for a Beck man. I appreciate the guesses, but I find that locking myself into one particular mindset does a disservice to my patients. No one fits neatly into a set of labels. - Oh, but that’s where you’re wrong, Doctor. The overwhelming majority of people walking this earth are zombies. Sheep. Slaves. They know nothing of free will or independence. It’s my job to free them from their prisons. Ironic that a man confined under lock and key talks about freeing others. - As Dean Martin said, “life’s really funny that way”. And I do enjoy a good laugh. I wouldn’t have pegged you for a Rat Pack guy...and even then, would’ve gone with the Chairman. But enough banter, what’s with the killing? -So my intuition let me down for once. I figured this was more of a chess match, feeling each other out. You delivered the first blow. So be it. I want to save the world. That’s...so off the beaten path -*tsk tsk tsk* You tried to be hard-nosed, get to the point, then backtrack when I show my hand? You definitely are an eclectic man. How am I supposed to believe that you want to save anyone when you end their existence AND keep score? -It’s actually very easy once you see all of the pieces lined up properly. Who was it...Sherlock I think...when you have eliminated all other possibilities, the only one remaining must be the answer, no matter how improbable. So that means I’m supposed to follow you down the rabbit hole to see how you came to that conclusion. -It’s only natural. Living is natural. -So is death. So is survival, struggle, resistance, challenge -And defeat, despair, inevitability. PAIN. All a part of the human experience...and all can be healed, except death. You bring people to that conclusion too quickly. -Are you familiar with hospice, doctor? Imagine if you knew that everything is coming to an end, sooner than you think. How would you live those final days? Would you really be pushing papers and worrying about binary code on a screen with visual inputs to dull your mind? Or would you maintain intimacy with those closest to you? Wouldn’t you want to spend every waking hour with those you care about? Now imagine you could have that life, right now, without the agony of breathlessness or your body riddled with tumors. The freedom to have all of the urgency, without the suffering of losing your mind to dementia. I grant that freedom, and I do it graciously. *pause* The best and worst part of that diatribe is that I find myself resonating with any part of it. It means that we have a connection. I’m going to chalk it up to both of us remaining human on a base level, and nothing more. -I’m glad to let you dip your toe into the water. Now, will you have the courage to dive in? Are you trying to remain civil when discussing this? Because as polite as I may sound, I’m actually disgusted. -*slight anger* Don’t show faux disgust when you just admitted that you have a twisted mind...the kind of mind that most don’t understand. Let me in. You’re really trying to make this that kind of session, where I get so empathetic that I misplace my ethics. You’re not even close. I’m not going to be an added mark on your visceral scorecard. -*quick switch to excitement* You FINALLY got to it. I’m impressed. Usually therapists comment within the first 30 seconds of meeting me. What took you so long? It’s an obvious thing. I figured you were tired of people asking, so I wasn't going to do it for the millionth time. I wonder though, what happens when you have no more space? -There are ways...in fact, there is one area that I keep a hidden set of marks that no one knows about. -*interrupting* I am NOT that kind of doctor so -Oh don’t be so childish. That's not what I meant. Just a few spots that I have left over, so I savor those occasions...a little bit extra. You know who I’m talking about, right? Batman. -Exactly. But you don’t obsess over what hasn’t happened yet. You go over what you’ve done...again, and again. Sounds droll to you, dull to me. -Then I can make it droll to you. There’s one mark that’s incredibly special to me. It’s my most cherished. In fact, without it, I don’t think I can go on like this. It would absolutely devastate me if anything happened to it. Fascinating. Perhaps we can delve into that specifically, who was it? *stutters* I...I...this is embarrassing...2..3...4… What are you doing? -I can’t tell you about that mark until I actually get to it *keeps counting, quicker* 47...48..49…***whispering sounds, then excited*** yes...YES! Here! Come quick, I can show you! Here, on my arm! Okay then, let me just ***gags while Zsasz laughs*** -You foolish man. You walk into your own demise for the sake of pitiful transference? I’ll have you know, I have made it my personal mission to maintain my strength through a series of isometric exercises...there is no way that you can escape my grasp. Tell me...is it true about what they say about your life passing before your eyes? *physical struggle, brief* *Doc is gasping but can still talk* I wouldn’t know. - *clearly pissed off* How...HOW? Who knew that doing Tough Mudders for fun and having self defense training for acute care situations would come in handy so well? *pause* Aw crud, call in a medical consult, I may have injured something here...and there’s blood somewhere. -There will be more than blood when I…*realizes he has been cut* you don’t cut your nails...you scratched me...Do no harm indeed… but it...it touches another...no...it’s wrong. The count is wrong. You’re not dead but your scar is with me! This is not the way! *whispering to someone* and next time have the injection ready ahead of time -You’re not listening? Are you really just going about your day as if you haven’t destroyed the balance of my being?! This is on your head. You will never be forgiven. Yours will be swift, when you LEAST expect it! ...GET THAT NEEDLE AWAY FROM ME! I WILL NOT HAVE MY BODY DEFILED! YOU ARE ALL MONSTERS! RESTRAINTS MEAN NOTHING TO ME! Kia Ora Whanau.Andrew Robinson stood looking at the sign halfway between Mangatepōpō road and Soda Springs which encourages travellers to complete the Northern Circuit if the sky is blue and clear and to turn back if the path is shrouded in cloud. Knowing that he and his team had gambled with the weather on their first day Robinson stood contemplating whether to continue or not in his quest to be the first person to complete the 10 great walks of New Zealand in 10 days. Initially wanting to make the circuit, commonsense won out and the team turned back have been set against the teeth of the storm for some time. Resigning himself to having been stopped at the first hurdle by the ele ents, Andrew and his crew set off to kayak the Whanganui river, disappointed, but vowing to get as much done as they possibly could. It was a little into the 93km first day that Andrew came up with a plan to get this epic endeavour back on track. This plan involved Jean Beaumount, An Audi, Vegan pies from the BP in Taihape, and a whole lot of hustling. Eugene and Matt talk with Andrew about his First Known Time on New Zealand’s Great Walks, Tough Mudders, Even Tougher Mudders, Eddie Vedder (not that one), and how far you can bend someone’s offer of “a smoothie and a shower” all on this week’s Dirt Church Radio. Enjoy.

This week, I’m excited to welcome Hunter McIntyre to the podcast. Hunter Mcintyre is one of the most decorated multi-sport athletes in history. On top of being a mainstay in the sport of OCR with 6 World Titles, he is a Crossfit games competitor, has the MURPH World Record, the Hyrox World Record and is undefeated on the popular TV show Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Challenge. Join Hunter this year by gaining access to his exact training programs as he attacks his athletic adventures! Questions asked during our conversation: Why do you think that so many people are hard-wired to enjoy punishing workouts/events? What does your pre/post race nutrition look like? What motivates you to find that extra 1% when you’re feeling smashed? https://180nutrition.com.au/ This week, I’m excited to welcome Hunter McIntyre to the podcast. Hunter is a professional athlete and fitness trainer who established himself as a dominant force in the world of obstacle course racing and is one of the most decorated multi-sport athletes in history. He brings his magnetic personality to all his fitness endeavors, which has led him to create a variety of online programs, events, and sport specific resources. In this episode, we discuss the mindset, nutrition and recovery strategies he calls upon to ensure that he continues to dominate. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or an elite athlete, you’ll definitely get a lot out of this conversation. Over to Hunter. Hey guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition and I am delighted to welcome Hunter McIntyre to the podcast. Hunter, how are you, mate? Hunter 01:35 Fantastic, buddy. I’m actually drinking some protein right now. Stu 01:39 Well, you’re looking cool and we’re going to get into that in just a second. But first up for all of our listeners that may not be familiar with you, your work, all the crazy stuff that you do, I’d love it if you could just tell us a little bit about yourself, please. Hunter 01:53 Yeah. It’s always tough to do this because you feel like you’re bragging but whatever, I’ll do my best to be without being braggadocios. But I mean, I live in the world of a kind of extreme independent competition, kind of like the X Games version of running and fitness. I don’t do Olympic distance running. I do Tough Mudders and Spartan Races and we travel the globe doing races and HYROXs and CrossFit Games. Whatever you could throw at me, I’ll do, kind of like a hitman for hire. I dropped out on college and I needed to find a way to make money so I loved working out and I realized that you could work out and make money in these sports. And I was like, “All right, I’ll just be a hitman. If you put cash down, I’ll show up and I’ll beat everybody.” So that was kind of my motto and my lifestyle when I was a little bit younger. Obviously. I still love to do that stuff but I’ve kind of transformed my life into being more of a businessman nowadays and I actually spend more time at a desk that you can imagine, sadly. But, trust me, if any of you guys got $100,000 and you’re putting it down to see who is fittest person on earth, I’ll show up and probably cream everybody. Episode #180! Last week we kicked off a new series of lesser known sports that are growing in popularity. We covered Pickleball and Horseshoe Pitching. This week we started off with Horton Smith Golf Pro, Garrett Holt as he gave us the 101 information about the growing sport of Speed Golf! Combining endurance running and the finely tuned skill of golf, this combo sport has grown tremendously in popularity. Listen to learn all of the strategies and the mentality it takes to be successful. We then discussed the extreme physical (some say crazy) events that require endurance running while completing wild and challenging obstacles. I am referring to Spartan Races, Warrior Dashes, and Tough Mudders just to name a few. Crawling through caves, jumping over fire, all another day at the office when you compete in these events. Amy Hietter joined us and helped us understand the picture of these courses along with the psychology of tackling and finishing these events. The bonding force, socially and athletically, of both of these sports is evident and I challenge all of you to get out of your comfort zone and find your next adventure sport! Thank you to Garrett Holt and Amy Hietter for a fun hour and sharing your perspective. We will continue this series for the next couple of weeks. Email the sport you want covered to acoachsperspective@gmail.com! Sign up to the bookmark newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/1119b1358a84/thebookmark About the Book Is happiness really the key to a meaningful and fulfilling life? We are all obsessed with happiness. There are thousands of books, presenters, and courses trying to teach us how to be happy. But are we more happy? No! We are the most depressed, anxious and medicated group of people in history. The happiness movement has failed us. Strive turns our ideas of happiness upside down and reveals why challenge, struggle and setbacks are the keys to living a profoundly satisfying life that fosters authentic happiness. Dr Adam Fraser shows that the practice of striving towards a goal is vital to achieving fulfilment and peak performance, without needing to sacrifice your relationships and physical and mental wellbeing along the way. Strive is a must read for anyone who wants to transform their lives and find fulfilment, one struggle at a time. Source: https://www.dradamfraser.com/shop-content/strive About the Author Dr Adam Fraser is a heavy metal loving, car racing, daughter raising, gym junkie, geek researcher. Up til now the greatest moment in my life is being front row at an Iron Maiden concert. His company conducts cutting edge research with different universities all over the world and then disperses that information in a practical form through books, keynote presentations, workshops, training programs, online programs and customised consulting projects. He believes everyone has a superpower. Some people can cook, some people can create amazing works of art, others can hug with the appropriate amount of pressure for the right length of time. His superpower is the ability to make the complex, simple and engaging. He takes the latest science and translates it so that people can immediately apply it to their own situation.Source: https://www.dradamfraser.com/about Buy the book from The Book Depository - https://www.bookdepository.com/Strive/9780730337416/?a_aid=stephsbookshelf Would you like to take better notes from the books you read? Get your copy of Archley's beautiful book journal, the Book of Books here: https://www.archleys.com/?ref=JamVyS-U4mVR BIG IDEA 1 (4:25) – We need more struggle. We need to stop the happiness obsession. It’s not achieving of things that makes us feel good (this is the completion myth) but the work we put in on the way to achieving something. This means that it’s not helpful (or true) to think ‘when you get this then you’ll be happy’, ‘when you lose weight then you’ll be able to get on with your life’ or ‘when you find true love etc’, these things don’t really make us happy but only for a few moments, couple of days or weeks. The real fulfilment is in the strive. According to Dr. Adam Fraser’s study, it’s actually the struggle and strive of getting to our goals that makes us feel accomplished. It gives us a sense of purpose and less about the idea of happiness. People want personal journey and development, which is why we see people doing what some might consider crazy, like signing up for Ironman races or Tough Mudders. Because we know we need more struggle, something to work for. There’s an interesting point in the book around the idea of skill and confidence building compared to the characteristics of flow. The characteristic of something that will build confidence is that the challenge level and skill required have to be high but the enjoyment level is low. The difference between flow and strive is that with strive, you’re not enjoying the process at the moment. BIG IDEA 2 (8:48) – Change your struggle mindset. We have to see struggle as an opportunity for development. This means that we are not always going to feel good. Adam says there are three foreground ways to allow us to embrace struggle: Accept that struggle sucks and be okay with that reaction We need to connect to meaning and purpose. Achievement of a goal Mastery of skill Contribution to others Marveling at your own courage. By embracing these behaviours, we can overcome the inherent feelings of discomfort that will come from doing something that feels hard. BIG IDEA 3 (13:05) – Build struggle rituals. Struggle rituals are the background behaviours which is the basis from which we strive. Focus – focus on what is important and don’t multi-task Gratitude – think about what is going well and what you are grateful for Connecting with others and getting support – knowing who your support team is Relax – have a practice for daily, weekly and monthly moments of mindfulness Celebrate These healthy rituals, or habits, will give us the mental and emotional ability to embrace struggle on a regular basis. I am excited about this episode of “Legal Tech Tips with Eve”. I recently had the chance to sit down with THE Tom Stanton, who’s an intellectual property attorney, entrepreneur, tech guru, sensei, guitar player, volunteer extraordinaire…too many titles to list here as his list of impressive accomplishments never ends. This guy has a lot of creativity and all this energy, and he hails from Montana. I almost started getting distracted during the interview because Tom is very intelligent and his narrative is fascinating. He’s the type of guy that keeps you engaged and focused, mainly because he’s had such a variety of unique experiences in life. A mutual friend in the tech start-up community here in Tampa introduced me to Tom a few months back and we struck up a conversation about intellectual property, entrepreneurship, even marathons and Tough Mudders. I knew Tom had to share his story with my listeners. Today’s topic was “Technology in the Legal Field“, but during course of the interview, Tom mentioned that entrepreneurs must adopt the mindset of ‘comfort in chaos’, and I liked that phrase because it really applies to so many areas of the legal industry. The wheels of justice grind slowly, but it’s a chaotic grind upon which many of us thrive. True story. Entrepreneurship is very similar in the respect that it, too, is a slow, chaotic grind, and it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. So that’s what I explored during this episode with Tom, how he transitioned from a tech entrepreneur to an attorney.

And why?? Because I truly believe that exercise will make every woman's life better. I'm Mickie and today's episode is brought to you by One Strong Southern Girl.com. So, who am I and why should you care what I have to say about women's fitness anyway? That's a great question! I'm a medical professional, former personal trainer and lifelong fitness enthusiast. I worked out at a gym for almost 10 years and transitioned into home exercise exclusively over the last 15 years or so (after I had my first child). I've run 2 Tough Mudders and a bunch of ½ marathons and have tried a ton of different fitness products, services and styles of exercise. And I guess because I've found a way to make exercise such a permanent part of my life I've always had other women ask me for fitness advice and I LOVE that I can help. So, I'm always looking for new ways to make exercise more interesting and fun for myself and all the women around me. A few years ago I started a women's fitness blog (One Strong Southern Girl) and was so excited and humbled by the feedback that I expanded my business in a few different ways and this podcast is one of them. Because not everyone has time to read an article about a service on line but I can reach them with this podcast. And remember if you're here listening to me then you're a part of the team and I'd love to hear from you. If you stumble on a cool exercise service or product please contact me and tell me what you love about it. (You can email me at ccpodast@onestrongsoutherngirl.com) Please help me help other women make exercise a permanent part of their life. So, before we talk about exercise stuff I wanted to share two cool podcasts with you. Limetown Ten years ago, over three hundred men, women and children disappeared from a small town in Tennessee, never to be heard from again. In this podcast, American Public Radio reporter Lia Haddock asks the question once more, "What happened to the people of Limetown?" This is a fictional story that'll hook you right from the start. Missing Richard Simmons On February 15, 2014, fitness guru Richard Simmons disappeared. He stopped teaching his regular exercise class at Slimmons, cut off his closest friends, and removed himself from the public eye after decades as one of the most accessible celebrities in the world. Nobody has heard from him - and no one knows why he left. Filmmaker Dan Taberski was a Slimmons regular and a friend of Richard's. Missing Richard Simmons is Dan's search for Richard - and the deeper he digs, the stranger it gets. This isn't a new podcast but I loved it. The information about Richard Simmons is pretty fascinating. It's worth listening to. So let's talk about some exercise stuff… Some of the following links are affiliate links. If you use one of my links to purchase something it helps support my business. Thank you! (No hard feelings if you don't.) You can get more information about that here. Find Your Trainer What is Find Your Trainer? An online service that matches your fitness goals and location with a personal trainer who'll come to you (work, park, home, hotel, etc.) to help you exercise. How much is Find Your Trainer and how do I pay? The trainers start at $37/session and vary depending on the number of sessions you buy. Each trainer's prices are listed in their profile. You schedule and pay your trainer online. There's no membership or service fee to use Find Your Trainer. How long are the sessions? 55-60 minutes Will I need to provide any equipment? No, the trainers will provide you with any equipment that's needed. Can the trainers work with me at my gym? Yes, if the gym allows outside trainers. Can I train with a partner or friends? Yes! The rate for partner training (two people) is 1.5x the trainer's normal rate. For groups of three to six people, the rate is 2x the normal rate. If you're interested in either, just send an email to contact@getfyt.com and we'll help get you set up! So, I haven't actually signed up for this service myself but it looks like a great idea if you feel like you need a personal trainer. ✔And I'd recommend you check out the Crunches and Cosmos podcast episode 4 (Do you Need a Personal Trainer? A Simple Guide to Help You Figure it Out) before you sign up. Now I'm going to move on to one of my favorite topics…workout clothes subscription services. I belong to 5 different programs—Armourbox is the newest one and when I recorded episode 3 (Workout Clothes Subscription Programs--Here's Why You Might Want to Sign Up) I'd only been in the program for a couple of months. Now, I've been in the program long enough to feel like I can talk about it more in depth. Armourbox What is Armourbox? ArmourBox is the workout clothes subscription box program by Under Armour. How does it work? You fill out a style survey and then Under Armour sends you 4-6 items of gear based on your unique exercise preferences. You have 7 days to try everything on (from the comfort of your own house) and send back what you don't want to keep. Under Armour recycles their shipping box so anything you don't keep goes back in the original box and you slap on the return label and sticker to seal the box and drop it off at the post office. You'll get your shipment every 30, 60 or 90 days. You decide that when you sign up and you can change it whenever you want to. How much is ArmourBox? ArmourBox is completely FREE! There are no style fees or shipping charges in Under Armour's subscription box program! This makes it unique from every other fitness subscription box program out there that I'm aware of today. The only thing you'll pay for are the items you keep. And if you decide to keep all of the items in your shipment then you'll get 20% off the total price. The best things about Armourbox (and how it stands out from the pack of other fitness subscription boxes) 7 days to try everything on (most programs give you 5 days) No service, styling or membership fees (I don't know any other program that does that, most of them charge you a styling fee of at least $25/month whether you keep anything or not) Shoes and more…! (not many programs will send you shoes and other gear besides workout apparel) My positive tip of the day… So, pay it forward…literally. Buys someone else's meal the next time you're in a drive through line. Thank you for being here! Remember if you want to see my real life you can on my Instagram stories. And please join my email list. Just go to my website and sign up. I don't email that much and you can unsubscribe if I start to annoy you. Maybe you've heard of the popular obstacle race courses, Tough Mudder, Spartan Race, Warrior Dash, etc. In this conversation with Paulina, my muddy buddy, we talk about our physical and mental experiences during these races. The both of us have strong backgrounds in Psychology and Sociology, so we talk about mental toughness, confidence, competition, discipline, and grit. We have done Tough Mudders, Spartan Races, Warrior Dashes, and other types of marathons/obstacle races. We mention how we each trained for the races and how mentally prepared we must be to endure, prepare, and tough out some harsh conditions. We give honest reviews about our experiences with each type of race we have done, so you can decide if you want to Spartan Up or be a Tough Mudder. Click to Download Audio “Who’s stupid idea was this anyway?” It definitely wasn’t the first time I had asked myself this in the last six months since declaring that my #1 goal for 2018 was transforming From ‘Dad Bod’ to American Ninja Warrior. I was asking myself this question this particular instance after having just woken up at 5am on a Saturday and driving 350 miles north to Monterey so I could pay good money to run 10 miles in the mountains, carry sandbags and buckets full of gravel up hills, army crawl under barbed wire, climb 2500+ feet of elevation gain, and wade through mud (just to name a few of the over 30 obstacles). Here’s the catch: Three days before the race I couldn’t bend over to tie my shoes. I had strained my QL muscle (lower back) earlier that week doing kettlebell deadlifts. To add insult to injury, two weeks before that I landed awkwardly while practicing a vault in parkour class and had a deep bone bruise in my left knee...which I later discovered was also a sprained MCL. Needless to say, I don’t know a lot of other sane people who would wake up at 5am on a Saturday after having worked a 60+ hr week, drive 700 miles in a day, and run a 10 mile Spartan Race on a bum knee who can barely tie their shoes. But sane is boring. Striving for a life of comfort ultimately leads to complacency which leads to boredom which leads to unhappiness which leads to self-loathing which leads to hours spent in front of screens every day to escape the drudgery of life. Living life outside your comfort zone is where real growth and change occurs. To quote one of my favorite ANW superstar athletes: “Get comfortable being uncomfortable.” - Flip Rodriguez Having spent the majority of 2018 up until this point being very uncomfortable on a daily basis, here are six lessons I’ve learned after six months of training for American Ninja Warrior. LESSON #1. The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The next best time is today. At 38 years old I have a lot of excuses for why becoming an American Ninja Warrior is just a stupid idea. Most of the athletes that compete on the show, even those who are my age or older, have an athletic background. Many are former gymnasts, track & field stars, pole vaulters, professional and amateur rock climbers with decades of experience, gym owners and personal trainers, or freerunners and parkour artists. The last time I did anything truly athletic was in high school when I trained for (and earned) a black belt in martial arts. Once I hit college and then the real world I was 100% career focused. A few years ago once the weight started to pile on I took up obstacle course racing and did a few Spartan Races and Tough Mudders...but as a hobby. I was a “Weekend Warrior,” and my only objective was finishing the course and having some fun along the way. Training intensely for 10+ hours a week for a sport like American Ninja Warrior is a world I haven’t inhabited since my face was covered with acne, my voice cracked, and I was studying for my driver’s test. There’s no question the best time to become an athlete was twenty years ago. I can’t even imagine how much easier training would be today had I chosen to continue my martial arts study, or take up gymnastics, or become a rock climber in college. But that’s no excuse. Rather than thinking “it’s too late,” I instead look at my circumstances from a different perspective. In December 2017 when I decided my #1 goal for 2018 would be to train for American Ninja Warrior, I closed my eyes and jumped into my mental time machine to travel forwards 12 years. I pictured myself at fifty years old at my daughter’s high school graduation. I was (still) bald, at least 50 pounds heavier than I am now with chronic lower back pain, two bum knees, constant visits to the cardiologist for heart issues, and still battling depression and anxiety. As I sat there watching my daughter walk across the aisle and receive her diploma, my future self thought: “I wish I hadn’t been too afraid to train for American Ninja Warrior when I was 38. My life would be so different right now.” That single mental image was more than enough to compel me to jump into training right on January 1st because my only true fear is regret. IN SHORT:It’s never too late to begin writing chapter 1 of your new “origin story.” LESSON #2. If you set your goals improperly, tremendous success can end up feeling like total failure. For the past fifteen years I’ve been completely obsessed with learning everything I can about the psychology of high performance and the habits that lead to success. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned during this journey is that achieving a goal is meaningless if you set the wrong goal. Your goals are the foundation that your house is built upon. If you build your house on quicksand, it doesn’t matter how strong the walls or the roof is, your house will collapse. It’s imperative that you take the time to clearly define a goal properly before taking a single action towards achieving that goal. I spent weeks painstakingly clarifying my “macro goal” in December of 2017 before taking a single moment to plan my diet, map out my training regimen, or stepping foot in a gym and doing a single pull-up. The conclusion I came to after working through the steps I teach in my Design Yourself program is that “Getting on American Ninja Warrior” is NOT going to be my goal. Wait...what? Bear with me for a second. Let’s assume this is the goal I set: “I will be on season 11 of American Ninja Warrior in 2019.” This goal depends on outside circumstances that I have no control over. I could show up to the gym every morning, lose 25 pounds, drop to 10% body fat, and become an expert at ninja obstacles over the next 12 months. To everyone but me, this would look like tremendous success. But if I’m not chosen as one of the over 40,000 people who submit audition videos every season? I would be a total failure. The problem with this goal is that it’s binary - there are only two possible outcomes. Outcome 1 is I get on the show - Success. Outcome 2 is I don’t get on the show - Failure. I’d rather set myself up for success and build systems around a goal that is completely within my control. Simply put, as long as I put in the work consistently, I will be successful. Therefore, here’s the macro goal I set for 2018: “I will weigh 175 pounds and be in American Ninja Warrior shape by December 31st.” The difference is subtle yet completely changes the systems I build that ensure I follow through and achieve my goal. This is a SMART goal. It’s Specific. My goal is not to “be healthy” or “lose weight” it’s to be in a very specific kind of physical shape. It’s Measureable. I will weigh 175 pounds. Weight is a metric that can be tracked. It’s Actionable. Taking concrete daily actions will lead me closer to success. It’s Relevant. This goal aligns with the work I do in my business. It helps raise awareness of my documentary film GO FAR. And I’m setting a good example for my children. It’s Time-Sensitive. I have a specific deadline of December 31st. My goal has nothing to do whatsoever with being on the show. If I lose 25 pounds, drop five inches off my waist, shed body fat, and develop the strength and coordination to compete on ANW-level obstacles, not being chosen is immaterial. I will have succeeded come December 31st, 2018. IN SHORT:Before you invest a tremendous amount of time, energy, and attention in achieving a difficult goal, make sure you have set the right goal first. LESSON #3. The best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. When you’ve just crossed the threshold of 200 pounds for the first time and you max out at (barely) 5 pull-ups, the thought of running one of the most difficult obstacle courses on the planet sounds downright impossible. I already know I have to lose at least 25 pounds to even be in the same conversation as most of the other athletes on the show (I’m 5’ 11” so getting below 170 just ain’t happening). It would also be nice if I could dead hang from a bar for at least 3 minutes and be able to do a minimum of 20 pull-ups by the end of the year. That’s great...but so what? What the hell am I supposed to be doing this morning? Often times people procrastinate and avoid taking action towards their goals because the result is too far away and seems like success will never come. The key to overcoming the procrastination and fear that accompany pursuing difficult goals is to break down a “macro goal” into tiny “micro goals” that seem so simple there’s no reason not to do them. My macro goal was crystal clear on day 1, so now it was time to break that down into an action plan with very doable micro goals. Being in “ANW shape” by December 31st requires that I develop a series of skills including: Rock climbing, Parkour, and Crossfit. And I’ll probably need to train 5-6 days per week. Over the course of the next year, assuming a few recovery weeks and family vacation time, that’s “hitting the gym” over 200 times in the next twelve months. Um….no thank you. Yet despite the massive overwhelm of going to the gym over 200 times this year, by the six month mark I’m over halfway there. Workout stats courtesy of Fitdigits.com Daily activity stats courtesy of Fitbit.com (I use the Fitbit Blaze) I didn’t go to the gym over 100 times in the last 6 months and burn over 1.1 million calories in the last six months by focusing on the end goal, I focused on the single actions steps that would get me to show up once. My first action step on day one was simply “Research gyms near me.” Anyone can do that! Once I found the places that made the most sense, the next step was not to commit to a 12 month membership, it was to “Try a free Crossfit class.” Yup, seems simple enough. My next action step after that was setting my gym clothes out the night before so when I woke up it was one less excuse to not show up. Easy peasy. Once I tried my free class, I immediately discovered that fifteen years of living in front of a keyboard have destroyed my body far worse than I anticipated. My flexibility and mobility were in the toilet. Therefore my next micro goal had nothing to do with losing 25 pounds or doing 20 pull-ups at once. My next micro goal was learning where to put a lacrosse ball and foam roller to loosen up my hip flexors and glutes so I can get into a proper squat. I can do that too! Rinse. Lather. Repeat. This mentality has led to 101 training days in 6 months, losing 14.8 pounds, and dropping 3 inches from my waist. Jan 1st, 2018 200.7 pounds, 38” waist, 24.1% body fat (per Fitbit scale) June 30th, 2018 185.9 pounds, 35” waist, 20.1% body fat (per Fitbit scale) IN SHORT: No matter how difficult the goal you set for yourself, if you break it down to the simplest of actions, as long as you take action consistently, success becomes inevitable. LESSON #4. Failure is the fastest path to success. I wish I had been wearing a GoPro my first night in parkour class (Not familiar with parkour? Here’s a brilliant overview). The camera would have not only captured my complete ineptitude with the most basic of skills, the footage would have also demonstrated that I was a few short years away from easily being mistaken as the dad to any other person in the class...including the instructor. There is quite possibly nowhere further outside my comfort zone on the planet then being surrounded by a bunch of seventeen-year-olds in a parkour class. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Kvw2BPKjz0 Here’s the “missing” footage from my first parkour class Because parkour is a necessary skill I must develop in order to achieve my macro goal, I know that to have even a slim chance of being considered I must be ready to embrace failure...a lot of it. If I were afraid of failure or “looking stupid,” I simply would have stood in the back corner during open gym time and watched other people who were practicing “The Warped Wall” (the most iconic obstacle of ANW). Then when no one else was watching, I might have attempted it, but only as long as nobody was watching. After all, what if I fell? God forbid I look like an idiot. Screw that. During my first open gym session one of the first things I tried was the warped wall. And I failed. So I tried it again. And I failed again. I then tried another 10-15 more times before I decided to call it a night and find another obstacle I could fail at repeatedly. Guess what I did the following week at open gym? I failed getting up the warped wall another 10+ times. https://youtu.be/TKzN4IEQQ4s My first (failed) attempt at trying the obstacle course at ‘Ninja Beach’ A few weeks later during open gym a couple guys showed up who have been on the show and successfully run the course more than once. Sure I could’ve been super intimidated and stood off to the side as a socially awkward introvert (my default mode). But instead I walked right up to them, introduced myself, and asked if I could “join in” on the practice runs they were concocting around the gym. When the time came to run up the warped wall I approached one of them and asked, “So what’s the trick to getting up the wall?” He asked me to run it, and of course I failed. He began to tweak my form, my steps, and my technique. And I failed a few more times. Then I got up the wall. Eventually on my own I would’ve gotten to the top of the wall, but being willing to publicly embrace failure (a lot) and ask questions shortened my learning curve and got me to the top infinitely faster. Now I have more time to perfect my technique and move onto other obstacles I cannot do yet. IN SHORT: Obstacles are inevitable. You will fail. But failure is only failure if you give up and quit. Be willing to ask questions, learn from your mistakes, embrace failure publicly, and reframe it as a learning experience that gets you one step closer to success. LESSON #5. Focus on the process, not just the results. When undertaking any kind of athletic training, whether you have done it your whole life or you’ve chosen to dust yourself off after living behind a computer for almost twenty years, it’s SO easy to get caught up in the numbers. Especially in sports like Crossfit it’s easy to become obsessed with metrics like max reps, AMRAP’s, EMOM’s, and WOD’s...just to name a few. And the temptation is always there to compare where you are to everyone else in the class: “Hey bro, what’s your deadlift PR?” (Personal Record) The problem with chasing after metrics whether your own or the person next to you is it makes it much harder to focus on the process, and comparing your progress to others only wastes energy you could be spending on yourself. That’s why I believe in “Running Your Own Race." If the only reason you’re going to the gym today is to hopefully lose twenty pounds six months from now, you will be miserable unless you embrace how every single piece of the puzzle fits together. And thinking to yourself, “Why is that person so much better than me?” only leads to self-doubt and frustration. Working with my Crossfit trainer (one of 3 different specialists I’ve enlisted in my pursuit of ANW), we have spent weeks doing super simple exercises with tiny weights, small resistance bands, and a lot of bizarre balance exercises with no weight at all. I pictured my life being nothing but pull-ups, push-ups, squats, deadlifts, and all the other crazy hardcore exercises that come with Crossfit (and there has been some of that). Instead I’ve found myself struggling to lift a 5 pound plate with my body in some bizarre balance configuration while the guy next to me is squatting 300 pounds. To put it simply, instead of working towards doing 20 pull-ups at once no matter what it takes, our goal is making sure I can do ONE pull-up with 100% perfect form and minimal effort before ever doing a second. The “One Thing” I focus on every single time I train is moving my body as efficiently as possible. I don’t care about reaching a certain weight, I don’t care about how fast I do things, and I certainly don’t care about anyone around me going faster or lifting more. All I care about is my form. Once my form suffers, I know it’s time to stop. I would rather do 5 perfect reps than 15 sloppy reps. While this approach requires more patience, this laser-sharp focus on the details will yield much bigger long term gains. When the time comes I do have the strength, balance, and stamina to participate with the pros on a real ninja course, focusing on the tiny details (like where my hand should grab the bar, or how I should place my feet, or the angle my shoulders should be when flying from one bar to the next) will be easier because above all else, the muscle I’m training one rep at a time is my “focus muscle.” IN SHORT: No matter the goal you are trying to achieve, stop focusing on the results you might get someday and instead focus on the process today. LESSON #6. Life is too short to live it without Snickers ice cream pie. When I made the proclamation that I was going to dedicate the entire year to not only losing weight and “getting back in shape” but to training intensely for ANW, I knew the possibility was there to turn this into a truly miserable experience. Just about anyone can lose 25 pounds if they’re willing to deprive themselves for a few months. In fact, the TV series The Biggest Loser is proof-positive that anyone can make radical short-term lifestyle changes and receive tremendous gains. The problem with radical short-term lifestyle change is that it doesn’t stick, and the process sucks every single day. The vast majority of TBL participants, for example, end up gaining back all of their lost weight (with more weight on top of that1). Choosing to train for ANW was not a 12 month decision for me that involved cutting calories and going to to gym as often as possible. Becoming an American Ninja Warrior goes much deeper. Becoming an American Ninja Warrior is a lifestyle. Becoming an American Ninja Warrior is an identity. Yes I am much more careful about what I eat 6 out of 7 days per week. Yes I spend a lot of hours in the gym, and yes I’ve made a lot of personal (and financial) sacrifices to find the time and money to completely change my life over the next 12 months. But I’ve been very clear with myself that every single change I make has to be one I’m willing to stick with for a minimum of 3-5 years. If a specific dietary choice or workout routine is one that involves deprivation and misery, I won’t do it. I don’t care about short term gains, I care about permanent lifestyle change. I’m playing a game of chess, not a game of checkers. Taking a Saturday off to have pizza and ice cream with my kids might mean it will take a little longer to reach my weight and body fat % goals, but I’d rather my kids remember the fun Saturday afternoons when we all had ice cream together, not the Dad who munched on celery and peanut butter at the ice cream store because “He is always training.” I’d rather celebrate a successful Spartan Race binging at a BBQ joint with ribs, biscuits with apple-cinnamon butter, pulled pork on the side, and a giant dessert to chase it all down than not celebrate a short-term milestone because my stats might suffer for a week or two. Yes I’m 100% dedicated to becoming an American Ninja Warrior...but life is too short to live it without Snickers ice cream pie. IN SHORT: Radical lifestyle change is a slow process. Don’t choose behaviors that you’re not willing to stick with for a long time. Life is a game of chess, not a game of checkers. 1 http://www.businessinsider.com/new-show-biggest-loser-winners-regained-weight-big-fat-truth-2017-6 Further Reading & Listening: From ‘Dad Bod’ to...American Ninja Warrior? Click to Download Audio [Dad•bod] (noun): A male body type that is best described as "softly round." The type of physique a man "earns" when the increasing pressures of work life, married life, and especially fatherhood no longer allow him the time or drive to maintain a hard, toned figure. As a result, what was once a sculpted, chiseled frame digresses into a soft, flabby heaping pile of “I Don't Give A Shit Anymore.” A male who is usually over 30 years old that used to be jacked or in good shape, or an ex-athlete who is now an average Joe Blow with kids. Usually also hairy. Yup. Urban Dictionary1 pretty much nailed it, but they missed one small detail: They didn’t provide a photo. I’ll spare them the research. This was me just 3 months ago, the only day in my life I’ve ever tipped the scale over 200 pounds. And that one single day was more than enough to remind me I’m way closer to forty than thirty, and “getting back into shape” isn’t going to get any easier the longer I put it off. January 1st, 2018: 200.7 pounds, 38” waist, 25.3% body fat It was this very moment when I decided “Tomorrow” is no longer a day of the week on MY calendar. Given I spent ten years of my teens and early twenties obsessively training for a black belt in martial arts (and living in the weight room), and knowing it was only a few years ago that I crushed P90X2 and completed my first Spartan Trifecta, the only question that continually ran through my mind when I saw “200.7” on the scale was: “How the hell did I get here?” It didn’t take long to do the math. 15 years of 12+ hour days living behind a computer (under constant stress...in the dark) Thousands of afternoon snacks in front of the television watching raw footage or reviewing cuts (because after a hard morning, “I deserved it”) 7 years of sleep deprivation after having two kids (they’re now 8 and 6, so I finally have sleep under control again) Only prioritizing exercise when I was training for events instead of turning it into a lifestyle choice and a regular weekly habit A lifetime of being a workaholic and prioritizing my career ahead of my well being Worst of all...2017 was not kind to me. I frequently refer to it as “The Lost Year.” According to my public profile I crushed it: I edited the pilot, finale, and two additional episodes of the limited TV series Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac & The Notorious B.I.G., I achieved the lifelong dream of becoming a member of the American Cinema Editors (ACE), and I rebranded from ‘Fitness In Post’ and launched ‘Optimize Yourself’ shortly after running a successful 5-day fitness challenge with over 1100 participants on six continents (I still can’t win over Antarctica). I found myself in the fetal position thinking, ‘My family would be better off without me.’ What you won’t learn about me on my IMDB page or Facebook is that I spent half of 2017 battling the second worst case of burnout I’ve ever faced that included months of writer’s block, debilitating social anxiety, and more than one occasion of suicidal depression where I found myself in the fetal position thinking, “My family would be better off without me.” Regular exercise and proper diet were distant memories in 2017. I spent six straight weeks between projects binging seven seasons of Shark Tank with a never-ending bowl of popcorn in one hand and Oreo’s in the other. And my daily fitness goal was attempting a 15 minute walk around the block without stopping to rest from exhaustion. (I failed more than I succeeded.) Listen here to learn more about how I dug myself out of the dark hole of depression by learning how to “rewrite my story.” So then what business does an out of shape television editor with a killer “Dad bod” have thinking he can legitimately compete against some of the top athletes on the planet on the show American Ninja Warrior? If you’re not familiar with the nationwide phenomenon that is ‘ANW,’ below I have provided clips of my two favorite runs of all time from then-rookie and now superstar Kevin Bull, as well as Jessie Graff (both of whom I’m convinced are superhuman). On paper I clearly have no business training for one of the most competitive sports on the planet that requires ridiculous amounts of skill, strength, balance, coordination, and lightning speed: At 38, I’m “too old” to be running around on obstacle courses As a father of two with a demanding career I don’t have 3 hours a day, 6 days per week to train like a professional athlete I’ve never done a single day of gymnastics in my life (I can’t even do a cartwheel) My only prior knowledge of parkour comes courtesy of Michael Scott and his crew at “The Office” (Parkour!!!) Until a few months ago I had never done any rock climbing...ever At the lowest point of my depression last year, I could barely muster a single pull-up Therefore, the only sane question that comes to mind is…”Why?” My response is simply...“Why not?” It’s About More Than Just the Obstacles Despite the show being in its 6th season at the time, I only first heard of American Ninja Warrior (ANW) a few years ago when a YouTube video went viral of Kacy Catanzaro completing a city finals course...the first woman ever to do so (she is 5’ 0”, by the way). I watched the video thinking, “Wow, that looks kinda cool. Good for her.” And that was it. Not knowing much about the show at the time, I frankly thought it was a fancier version of “Wipeout.” A few months after, my kids starting watching ANW during their summer break. At first I would walk past and watch for one or two minutes, but given I spent the last several years running Spartan Races and Tough Mudders, I quickly became intrigued and soon found myself sitting with them and binge-watching the show for hours at a time. What drew me to ANW was not the physical feats of superhuman strength, balance, and coordination. Sure the obstacles were cool, but what was so compelling were the personal stories and journeys of each of the participants, many of whom were completely “regular” people with normal jobs and families. They weren’t professionals performing for millions of dollars per year. These were people paying their own way to travel and be on that course (some of whom waited in line for weeks) because they had a mission, a larger purpose to fulfill, and people in their lives that needed a little inspiration. Participant Zach Gowen running with one leg Frankly, many of the contestants had no business being there at all. Some of them were too short. Others were too old. One guy had a prosthetic leg, and another guy didn’t have a leg at all! Some participants were former athletes out to prove something, but other contestants were postal workers, farmers, teachers, computer programmers, engineers, maintenance workers, meteorologists, and ER doctors...just to name a few. Perhaps the greatest thing about ANW is that they fully embrace female participation...but the women have to beat the exact same course as the men. Women like Kacy Catanzaro, Jessie Graff, Meagan Martin, Barclay Stockett, caregiver Jesse Labreck, and elementary school teacher Allyssa Beird, are all examples of female participants who have completed insane courses the vast majority of the men couldn't. Name one other sport where women are allowed to compete at the same level with the men. Some of the top female ANW athletes The one constant across every season of the show is that all the participants are real people willing to push themselves outside their comfort zones to achieve something amazing in their lives and bring hope and inspiration to the most important people around them (not to mention the millions of people they inspire around the world). Hmm...the idea of someone faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles who overcame them to achieve their goals. Sound familiar? Tell Me Something Can’t Be Done...I’ll Show You How It Can Be Done By the end of my kids’ summer break ANW had become a full-blown family obsession (It’s now basically the only show we watch together), and on more than one occasion I found myself thinking, “Wouldn’t that be awesome to do? I think I could do that.” Many would leave it at that and go back to their daily lives (at least the sane people). For me, the phrase “Wouldn’t that be awesome to do?” has a much deeper meaning. It is the word-for-word phrase that I heard over and over for seven straight years while producing and directing the documentary film GO FAR: The Christopher Rush Story about the first quadriplegic with muscular dystrophy to become a licensed scuba diver. Watch the first quadriplegic with muscular dystrophy become a licensed scuba diver Dedicating seven years of my life to telling Christopher’s story taught me many profound life lessons, but the one lesson that sticks out far above all others is the simplest of concepts: Everyone has a disability. Chris was fond of saying that “Everyone has a disability.” His disability was neuromuscular - he simply had no physical strength. For others it might be their sight, their hearing, a genetic disease, their financial status, or mental health issues. If you just resign and say you can’t do something because of your disabilities, then you are fundamentally cheating yourself out of the richness that your other abilities will provide for you. - Christopher Rush Every single person who competes on American Ninja Warrior has their own disability. Every. Single. One. While most of the athletes may appear superhuman, the only difference is they have chosen to focus on their abilities, not make excuses because of their disabilities. I can think of hundreds of reasons why I can’t compete, but I have no intention of cheating myself or my family of the richness this opportunity could provide us. Therefore I only need one reason to try...because I can. Welcome to the “Discomfort Zone” If a teenager without the use of his arms or legs has the courage to be weighted down, thrown into the water, and he can fearlessly swim the depths of the Cayman Islands with a smile on his face, I think I can muster the courage to overcome my own disabilities and climb the ‘Warped Wall.’ I can get over my fear of heights and become a rock climber. I can get over years of “having a bad back” and dive head first into Crossfit. I can get over a lifetime of social anxiety and hang out with a bunch of teenagers to learn Parkour. Most importantly, I can make the commitment to living life outside my comfort zone and accept that failures on a daily basis are just a necessary part of writing my new “origin story.” Gymnastics, rock climbing, and parkour might not be my things (yet). But summoning intense, ninja-like focus to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and achieve a truly meaningful goal that everyone says can’t be done? Yup...that’s tailor made for me.

In this episode Jesi Stracham and I talk about her spinal cord injury and the recovery process, her non-profit, the vlog she is currently filming, cannabis for treating pain, the adaptive and non-adaptive sports she competes in, and a bunch more. Jesi is motivating others one adventure at a time while maintaining a candidness and a bunch of humor. For those that don’t know, Jesi was riding on the back of a motorcycle on Jan 18, 2015 when a car pulled out in front of the motorcycle. Jesi clearly remembers much of the accident up to the impact. Jesi had surgery two days later for a little over 7 hours. The doctors are confident they did everything to help Jesi achieve the best recovery possible. Jesi is paralyzed from the waist down. Jesi is super active. She is at the head of the non-profit Wheel With Me Foundation https://www.wheelwithmefoundation.org. She is an Adaptive Athlete and a member of the team UXC Polaris Factory Racing GNCC #820 where she races in an off-road, custom built machine with hand controls. Jesi is currently training for the paralympics, she was a finalist for Ms. Wheelchair USA, and she competes in Tough Mudders, most recently, the World’s Toughest Mudder. She once stated, "I stand for showing the paralyzed community that just because you get this injury your life isn’t over." Jesi is known for encouraging and inspiring others to live a full life. It should be noted that at the time of Jesi’s surgery she was the second patient in a clinical trial for Invivo NeuroScaffold which is a small device about the size of a grain of rice and this was placed where her spinal cord is injured. The idea is to “bridge” the gap in the spinal cord letting the spinal fluid flow freely again and regaining control over parts of the body one has lost control. http://www.invivotherapeutics.com. Ben Luke Smith grew up in a small town in Alabama and spent his early years as most kids do, playing youth team sports and riding his bike. Ben describes how a series of very unfortunate events in his life over the past several years has shaped who he is as a man and runner. From being held at gunpoint, to losing his mom and others from cancer, Ben has encountered and overcome many obstacles in life. We talk with Ben about obstacle course racing, such as Tough Mudders, Spartan Races, Rugged Maniac, and Warrior Dash, and how his faith, fitness, and running have helped him continue to recover from PTSD and become stronger and more resilient. Ben has served in the U.S. Air Force since 2010 and encourages listeners to always keep going and never stop. He also reminds runners that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and challenges listeners to always lend a helping hand to others. Tougher Mudder will require 100% Obstacle Completion. Tougher, Toughest, and World's Toughest form a three race Competitive series of Tough Mudders. They didn't say it specifically, but TM 5k, TM Half, and the regular Tough Mudder have formed a three race non-competitive series of Tough Mudder's. There will be an online system for tracking your cumulative milage across Tougher Mudder, Toughest Mudder, and World's Toughest Mudder. The "$100,000 for 100 Miles" team prize at WTM has been split into a $50,000 male prize and a $50,000 female prize. https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/hardertokill2 Our ancestors crossed the Alps in animal skins and colonized the New World in loin cloths. They evaded predators and built civilizations with just their raw brainpower and inner grit. But things have changed and now comfort is king. Today we live in the thrall of constant climate control and exercise only when our office schedules permit. The technologies that we use to make us comfortable are so all encompassing that they sever the biological link to a changing environment. Now we hate the cold and the heat. We suffer from autoimmune diseases. And many of us are chronically overweight. Most of us don't even realize that natural variation - sweating and shivering - is actually good for us. The new book uncovers how just about anyone can reclaim a measure of our species' evolutionary strength by tapping into the things that feel uncomfortable. When we slightly reimagine how how our body fits into the world and then we can conditioning ourselves to find resilience in unfamiliar environments. The feeling that something is missing from our daily routines is growing and has spawned a movement. Every year, millions of people forgo traditional gyms and push the limits of human endurance by doing boot camp style workouts in raw conditions. These extreme athletes train in CrossFit boxes, compete in Tough Mudders and challenge themselves in Spartan races. They are connecting with their environment and, whether they realize it or not, are changing their bodies. Perhaps no one exemplifies this better than , whose remarkable ability to control his body temperature in extreme cold has sparked a whirlwind of scientific study. Because of him, scientists in the United States and Europe are just beginning to understand how cold adaptation might help combat autoimmune diseases and chronic pains and, in some cases, even reverse diabetes. My podcast guest on todays show, , dives into the fundamental philosophy at the root of this movement in three interlocking narratives. His own journey culminates in a record bending, 28-hour, climb up to the snowy peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro wearing nothing but a pair of running shorts and sneakers. Scott is an investigative journalist and anthropologist whose stories blend narrative non-fiction with ethnography. He has been a contributing editor at Wired and his work also appears in Mother Jones, Foreign Policy, Playboy, Details, Discover, Outside and Fast Company. He regularly appears on variety of radio and television stations from NPR to National Geographic TV and has had academic work published in Nature and SAIS Journal. He holds a number of academic appointments including as a Senior Fellow at the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism. In 2010 he won the Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism for the story “Meet the Parents” which tracked an international kidnapping-to-adoption ring. His first book, The Red Market: On the Trail of the World’s Organ Brokers, Bone Thieves, Blood Farmers and Child Traffickers, was published by William Morrow in 2011 and won the 2012 Clarion Award for best non-fiction book. His second book A Death on Diamond Mountain: A True Story of Obsession, Madness and the Path to Enlightenment came out with Gotham Books in 2015. In 2015, Scott founded , a website that aims to add transparency to the business of journalism with Yelp-esque reviews of magazines and editors. He first traveled to India while he was a student at Kenyon College in 1998 and spent six years living there. Along the way, he learned Hindi and twice drove a motorcycle across the country. The RunRunLive 4.0 Podcast Episode 4-312 – Randy Pierce – Mountains, Dogs and Inspiration (Audio: link) [audio:http://www.RunRunLive.com/PodcastEpisodes/epi4312.mp3] Link epi4312.mp3 Intro Bumper: Chris Russell, a man barely alive…Heh, heh. Yes I am old enough to have watched the 6 million dollar man when it premiered in 1977. Well Hello my friends. Welcome to Episode 4-312 of the RunRunLive Podcast. This is Chris, your host, and I'm glad to see you. Won't you come in, grab a towel and sit with me for a bit while you cool down from your exertions of the week? It's been a busy spring for me. At the end of April I capped a worthy training cycle by running my 17th Boston Marathon. 6 Days later I fulfilled my role as titular figurehead (i.e. Race Director) at the 24th annual Groton Road Race. Last week I spent a couple days in the hospital to have a special bionic powers installed. I prefer to think of it as an upgrade rather than a patch. They didn't fix a bug in my heart, they upgraded me to Chris 3.0. Now I've got super powers, similar to Peter Parker, or Steve Austin. This week I rolled out to Phoenix at the crack of dawn Monday for a conference, bopped over to Denver to meet a guy for dinner last night and grabbed the Red Eye back to Boston. (It was on the way). As I write this I realize how ridiculously busy that sounds, and I was a bit tired this week, but it's not unusual for me, as you know by now, I run pretty fast in my life, so to speak. There's nothing here that coffee, running, meditation and denial can't fix. I don't want to make this about me, but I guess some of you might be interested in the exercise induced A-fib that I have/had and the procedure to have it fixed. From what I've learned this condition, or this related family of conditions, where athletes develop anomalies in their heart beats, is very common. Typically they treat it with drugs and tell you to stop being such a type A butt-head, but there's a whole range of pharmacological and surgical solutions as well. In my particular case the A-fib manifested when I went long or hard, basically any time I loaded my heart. It developed over the course of 2-3 years and got worse enough for me to figure out something was up and I got a real diagnosis in January. It manifests as an irregular heart beat in my case and in exercise this means you lose efficiency and power. The worst case scenario is that your blood pools in the heart chamber causing clots and stroke. It is caused by anomalous electrical signals that originate in the sheathing of the pipes of the upper right chamber of the heart, in my case. The procedure that I had is known as cryoablation. They snake a catheter up through the big arteries in your groin into that chamber of your heart. I suppose it's a bit invasive but they don't crack your chest open, which is a plus. When they get the catheter into that chamber of the heart they use a balloon with liquid nitrogen in it to ‘ablate', in this case freeze the tissue where the pipes come in. In this way they create a dam of scare tissue that block the signals from getting into the heart muscles and, best case scenario, cure the A-fib. So…yeah…that's what I did last week. They did all the blood tests, ekg and Catscan on Monday and then I went in Thursday morning for the procedure. I was a bit of an anomaly myself in the hospital. Those hospitals, as it turns out, are chock full of sick people. The nice nurses got me naked and shaved me up. My wife finally got to have my back hair shaved like she's been trying to get me to do for years. I don't remember it, but when I woke up they had given me the personal manscape as well. I know in the mens' magazines this is sexy, but on me it's like Golum on a bad hair day. The entire area where they went into the groin artery was shaved up leaving Mr.s Happy with cute little Furor mustache. I was under for the procedure. Out like a light switch. I woke up in the afternoon, a bit groggy, but apparently successfully upgraded. They said everything went well except that I was a bit fibrous in the core and they had trouble feeding the catheter up. My abdomen is still sore a week later. I had to spend the night in the hospital. I had my wits about me and was up and about by early Thursday afternoon so I was left trapped in a room in a hospital full of sick people with really bad food options and a lot of free time on my hands! I cleared all my email and got caught up on work stuff and watched Netflix. I can put up with anything as long as there is good Wi-Fi. Meanwhile a parade of smiling nurses came into my room and asked “Do you mind if I look at your groin?” To which I'd reply, “Knock yourself out!” It's the most attention my groin has gotten in decades. Friday Morning they processed me out. They told me not to run for a week or to lift anything heavy. The concern is not for the heart but for the insertion site. They don't want you rupturing that groin artery because it will bleed a lot. They also put me on blood thinners. The good news is that I won't get a clot but I could very well die in a messy shaving accident. What's the punch line? I held off running until Thursday morning because my abdomen was still sore and I didn't want to push it. I walked a bunch through the week. Thursday morning in Phoenix I put my heart rate strap on and set out with not a small amount of trepidation (that's a big word that means ‘fear'). Yeah, I was, as much as I ever am, afraid of what might happen. How would my heart react? Would I pop my groin and bleed out in the gutter? I know it's silly but you have these crazy thoughts, right? Fear isn't rational. I walked a 5 minute war up then brought my HR up into Z2 for 15 minutes and it was quite comfortable. After 20 minutes in I threw in a little Z3/Z4 surge and the heart didn't flip. I was able to bring it up and bring it down without anything weird happening. Very encouraging data. We won't really know until I go long or do a significant long tempo run. But, all in good time. To quote the late, great Hunter Thompson, “It got pretty weird, but it never got weird enough for me!” We have a great show for you today. I have a great chat with Randy who is a blind runner from my area who talks about his inspirational summiting of all the peaks above 4,000 feet in the NH White Mountains with his guide dog, some of it in the winter! He also ran Boston this year and we have a number of mutual friends in the local running community. In section one I tackled the question “What would I do if I had to create a good runner from scratch?” The script I wrote for this piece is in outline form and I recorded it in a hotel room in Phoenix so it is a bit more conversational than my usual prose. The second section is a rant about why I can't get a decent salad conveniently in the world. But – of course I've got my vegetable garden in too. And it is springtime in New England. I built a new raised bed and used my compost in it. The soil is a bit ‘young' but I'm going to try growing beans in it. Beans will grow in anything. I also built a potato box, which should prove an interesting experiment. And I've moved my raspberries around and should have a bumper berry crop. I managed to prune my fruit trees so we'll see if I can actually get some fruit this year. The hops are up and going crazy already. I've got some lettuce and cabbagy things in and some herbs seeded. And I've got my chipmunk traps up. With any luck I'll be having fruit and veg from my own garden a month or so from now. On with the show! Section one - Running Tips How to create a runner from scratch - http://runrunlive.com/back-to-basics-how-to-become-a-runner-from-scratch Voices of reason – the interviews Randy Pierce As for links well our website is a pretty solid overview of many of the accomplishments and undertakings: www.2020visionquest.org The In the media highlights plenty of reference material on Running, Tough Mudders, hiking and beyond. Meanwhile a couple of video clips on our documentary link will highlight still more for you. If you wish to understand more reference from the year long progression to the Boston marathon then I'll call out a few specific links.Yesterday was the one year anniversary of my running my first Marathon (Cox Providence 2014) and in that year I've had quite the journey including a national Championship in my division (B1) and most recently Boston. Post Boston Reflection: http://2020visionquest.org/Blog/2015/04/the-power-of-purpose-as-boston-strong-goes-quinn-strong/ Pre-Boston Celebration with links to key past articles like “Qualifying for Quinn” http://2020visionquest.org/Blog/2015/04/celebrating-the-2015-boston-marathon/ That probably will flood you with photos and information aplenty to be ready but let me know if you would like more still. Section Two – Life Lessons I just want a decent salad! - http://runrunlive.com/all-i-want-is-a-decent-salad Outro Alright my friends, it's Friday, I'm working on 3 hours of sleep and losing altitude fast, but we have made it to the conclusion of episode 4-312. Congratulations. Now let's move it to the exit before I fall asleep on you. Now that I've got the green light I have to figure out how to spin up my running again. My next event is a ½ marathon in the middle of June called the Mayflower Brewery Half Marathon in Plymouth Mass. And then the Hood to Coast Relay at the end of the summer. If anyone wants to join that we still have legs available – it's relay and it will be an adventure. I'll be setting up a fundraising page for that and looking for help. … As you may have figured out I read a lot. And I don't just read within my areas of expertise. Yes, I read business books and running books but I also read fiction, biographies, science fiction, short stories and any other topic that I find interesting in the moment. I would offer this up to you as a life lesson. Study things you know nothing about. I'm always pleased by the connections I can make between topics that are on the surface not related. But, my friends, everything is related. Feed your brain a varied diet and you will see the connections. So…Watch what I do next…I am going to draw a connection between picking up beautiful women, sales processes and tantric sex. How about that. And I'm going to do it without garnering an explicit rating. Feel's a bit like a dangerous high-wire act but what's life without risks? I should note, not that you're going to believe me, but, this is all an academic exercise for me, I'm not in the middle of some bizarre midlife crisis where I jet off to the Caribbean with my secretary. I don't actually even have a secretary. Although I do dig the Caribbean. Great SCUBA diving. The connection between sales process and pick up technique should be obvious. In both cases you have to have a methodology to approach the target, get their interest by demonstrating high social (or professional) value, build attraction through a push-pull process of demonstrating interest but also challenging. When you build enough trust you can test compliance and naturally move towards a close. Simple right? It is amazing how much a sales cycle and a pickup cycle have in common. But how do I tie in tantric sex? Here we go. In all three examples the first thing that you are told to focus on is letting go of the result. If you are focused on the end result of the process it clouds your ability to execute the process and it prevents you from being in the present moment. For a sales cycle this means you have to let go of the desire to close the business. For the pickup artist this means you have to let go of your desire to get the woman. And for the Tantric sex you likewise reset your focus on the ‘now' and not any particular climactic event. If you think about it there is an underlying life lesson here. The ability to live in the present moment and be present to your partners, whether business or social, is your ability to add value and connect. But you can only do that if you are willing to let go of the end result. My friends, we spend so much time in our lives rushing from one thing to the next, from one goal to the next, from one result to the next that we forget that every moment in itself is truth and purity. Are you free-wheeling peripatetically downhill to a frenzied end? Maybe you need to take the time to be present, especially in your interactions with the people in your life? Don't forget about right now, this moment, and appreciate it. And If I happen to run into you I will be sure to appreciate it and see you out there. The second section is a rant about why I can’t get a decent salad conveniently in the world. But – of course I’ve got my vegetable garden in too. And it is springtime in New England. I built a new raised bed and used my compost in it. The soil is a bit ‘young’ but I’m going to try growing beans in it. Beans will grow in anything. I also built a potato box, which should prove an interesting experiment. And I’ve moved my raspberries around and should have a bumper berry crop. I managed to prune my fruit trees so we’ll see if I can actually get some fruit this year. The hops are up and going crazy already. I’ve got some lettuce and cabbagy things in and some herbs seeded. And I’ve got my chipmunk traps up. With any luck I’ll be having fruit and veg from my own garden a month or so from now. If you wish to understand more reference from the year long progression to the Boston marathon then I’ll call out a few specific links.Yesterday was the one year anniversary of my running my first Marathon (Cox Providence 2014) and in that year I’ve had quite the journey including a national Championship in my division (B1) and most recently Boston. - http://runrunlive.com/all-i-want-is-a-decent-salad Outro Alright my friends, it’s Friday, I’m working on 3 hours of sleep and losing altitude fast, but we have made it to the conclusion of episode 4-312. Congratulations. Now let’s move it to the exit before I fall asleep on you. Now that I’ve got the green light I have to figure out how to spin up my running again. My next event is a ½ marathon in the middle of June called the Mayflower Brewery Half Marathon in Plymouth Mass. And then the Hood to Coast Relay at the end of the summer. If anyone wants to join that we still have legs available – it’s relay and it will be an adventure. I’ll be setting up a fundraising page for that and looking for help. … As you may have figured out I read a lot. And I don’t just read within my areas of expertise. Yes, I read business books and running books but I also read fiction, biographies, science fiction, short stories and any other topic that I find interesting in the moment. I would offer this up to you as a life lesson. Study things you know nothing about. I’m always pleased by the connections I can make between topics that are on the surface not related. But, my friends, everything is related. Feed your brain a varied diet and you will see the connections. So…Watch what I do next…I am going to draw a connection between picking up beautiful women, sales processes and tantric sex. How about that. And I’m going to do it without garnering an explicit rating. Feel’s a bit like a dangerous high-wire act but what’s life without risks? I should note, not that you’re going to believe me, but, this is all an academic exercise for me, I’m not in the middle of some bizarre midlife crisis where I jet off to the Caribbean with my secretary. I don’t actually even have a secretary. And for the Tantric sex you likewise reset your focus on the ‘now’ and not any particular climactic event. Don’t forget about right now, this moment, and appreciate it. And If I happen to run into you I will be sure to appreciate it and see you out there.
