Where does boredom come from? Have humans always experienced boredom, or has it only come on in the entertainment age, having more time than we know what to do with? Kevin Gary (Valparaiso University) is author of Why Boredom Matters: Education, Leisure, and the Quest for a Meaningful Life. He joins Drew Collins & Evan Rosa to reflect on the discontent and disconnection that boredom constantly threatens. They discuss the phenomena of boredom, the childhood experience of it, whether its good or bad, the definition of boredom, its connection to entertainment and education, and finally the role of attention and leisure in cultivating a healthy understanding and response to being totally bored out of our minds. This episode was made possible in part by the generous support of the Tyndale House Foundation. He has a Ph.D. in cultural and educational policy studies from Loyola University Chicago with a focus in the philosophy of education and an M.A. in systematic theology from the University of Notre Dame. Celina Texas Podcast: Jason Laumer, the Celina, Texas City Manager, has a quote on his office wall from a Teddy Roosevelt speech called "The Man In The Arena." The selection addresses the differences between those who "spend themselves for a worthy cause" versus "those cold and timid souls that know neither victory nor defeat." Jason Laumer has entered the arena and is committed to improving life in Celina, Texas. In this episode, Host Ron Lyons sat down with Jason Laumer and learned all about the man who has been very instrumental in leading Celina, Texas, on the journey to a better place than it was five years ago, fully implementing the concept of "Life Connected." But the discussion wasn't only about his mission to serve Celina. In typical Celina Radio Podcast fashion, Ron worked to discover the man behind the title. For example, did you know that Jason Laumer is a Star Wars geek? Or that he can do accurate math calculations in his head? You will enjoy hearing all about this man with a servant's heart, helping lead the way to a much better Celina, Texas, of the future. And be sure to listen to the end of this episode. By special request, Ron has included music from his favorites list. But, probably more significant than that, Ron will announce an exciting change coming to the Celina Radio Podcast.

“Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. And I'm happy, tonight. Suffering may not be a common topic of conversation. However, suffering for the sake of Jesus and being persecuted because we follow Him is something He told us to expect. In John 15 and 16, the Lord warned us to prepare to suffer. Jesus wanted us to understand that living connected to Him means we will be mistreated. However, we can endure the hard times because He is with us, and He is worth it. Mark is a youth pastor from Houston, TX, and Barret met Mark his freshman year of high school while attending that church. In this interview you'll hear Mark describe his avid fandom of the Houston Astros, as well as the sport of baseball in general. He also vividly recounts personally witnessing some of the greatest games in Astros history. As usual for Astros fans, we discuss the cheating scandal and Mark's take on it is pretty unique. He also talks about his experience coaching his son's coach-pitch baseball team, and how he fosters a competitive environment that teaches lifelong lessons for all the kids on his team. We discuss how do we engage in lifelong learning? Build robust community? How do we feel more of ourselves as we are now living longer and healthier than ever.“The beauty of hitting this life stage is, you have acquired a fair amount of experience and wisdom along the way and so you have the advantage of wisdom and disadvantage of less time left. This snarky title hints at the rant/soap-box Dr. McFaddin explores in this podcast. We discuss the misconceptions MDs have toward DVMs (or VMDs), as well as peek into the overwhelming stresses veterinarians face in their daily work lives. September is Suicide Prevention Month. Veterinarians unfortunately have a higher suicide risk compared to the national average. Dr. McFaddin encourages all working in this field to read the following Time's article (https://time.com/5670965/veterinarian-suicide-help/) and listen to this piece on NPR (https://www.npr.org/2019/09/07/757822004/veterinarians-are-killing-themselves-an-online-group-is-there-to-listen-and-help). For more information on how you can receive support or help support others struggling in this field we recommend you look into these amazing organizations: Not One More Vet (https://www.nomv.org/), 1 Life Connected (http://1lifecc.com/), the AVMA Wellbeing Initiative (https://www.avma.org/professionaldevelopment/peerandwellness/pages/default.aspx?utm_source=prettyurl&utm_medium=print&utm_campaign=mktg&utm_term=wellness), and AAHA Healthy Workplace Culture Initiative (https://www.aaha.org/practice-resources/running-your-practice/healthy-workplace-culture/).

From London, Ontario (Canada) and background roots in Greece, Maria help us understand how not only education has been a doorway for opportunities and experiences in life but can be a site for oppression. While attempting to challenge patriarchy and hyper-capitalism, she warns us of dangerous conceptions of freedom of expression that further invisibilize marginalized people’s voices. Maria invites us to connect back to our communities to counter notions of competition, progress and development. She questions our role in society in relation to healing and spirituality as acts of resistance by being able to have real conversations with each other that address issues such as climate change and a sustainable future for our planet earth. Bio: Maria is an educator, facilitator, curriculum designer and researcher whose work centers on how to best create engaging and visionary learning and leading experiences that inspire creative, equitable, and regenerative change. She has significant experience working with transformative paradigms of education and pedagogy, with a focus on social and climate justice, equity, holistic perspectives, arts-integration, the tensions between decolonization and global citizenship, and innovative problem solving. She is interested in supporting emerging generations of youth leaders as they grapple with complex issues and problems. Sources: Anzaldúa, Gloria E. (2015).
