Episode Summary: In a world that pulls our attention toward stress, exhaustion, and discouragement, many of us wonder how to cultivate joy on the days when life feels overwhelmingly heavy. What if joy is not something we wait for but something we intentionally build into our minds and our spirits even during difficult seasons. Rev. Jessica Van Roekel and I share how we can experience joy as a steady anchor rather than an unpredictable emotion, using both biblical truth and the latest neuroscience research to guide us. Quotables from the episode: Some days feel like a battle from the moment our feet hit the floor. Yet the Bible describes joy not as the absence of hardship but as a powerful spiritual resource that strengthens us from the inside out. We are talking about cultivating joy on difficult days. Not the easy days. Not the days when everything goes right. We are talking about the days when joy feels far away, and our circumstances feel like they are pressing in on every side. God never intended joy to be reserved only for ideal circumstances. One of the first things we need to understand is that joy and happiness are not the same. Happiness depends on what happens around us. Joy depends on the unchanging character of God within us. When we intentionally focus on what is true and life-giving the brain becomes better at recognizing hope even in hard situations. We can train our minds to recognize God’s presence and goodness even on difficult days. And most people do not realize that chronic stress suppresses the parts of the brain responsible for joy, connection, creativity, and problem solving. Joy is not built on our feelings. Joy is built on our confidence that God is in control even when life is not. Joy may begin as a flicker, not a blaze. Scripture References: James 1:2-4 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” Isaiah 26:3 “God will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are stayed on Him because they trust Him.” Psalm 94:18-19 “When I said, ‘My foot is slipping,’ your unfailing love, LORD, supported me. When anxiety was great within me your consolation brought me joy.” Zephaniah 3:17 “The Lord your God is with you. He is mighty to save. He takes great delight in you. He rejoices over you with singing.” Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him.” Recommended Resources: Reframing Rejection: How Looking Through a Different Lens Changes Everything By Jessica Van Roekel Sacred Scars: Resting in God’s Promise That Your Past Is Not Wasted by Dr. Michelle Bengtson The Hem of His Garment: Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises from God to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety’s Grip Free Study Guide Free PDF Resource: How to Fight Fearful/Anxious Thoughts and Win Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Free Webinar: Help for When You’re Feeling Blue Social Media Links for Host and Guest: Connect with Rev. It's the work of Christmas — to strike a match not just for ourselves, but for our community, the stranger, the oppressed, the one left out. This Advent, we'll be looking at how the flames of hope, peace, joy, and love - the traditional themes of Advent - call us to holy work. We must nurture hope, fight for peace, cultivate joy, and embody love.

What a great conversation today on Living a Legacy Life with Chelsea Damon, author of the book: I Thought This Would Make Me Happy, How to Fight Less, Forgive Faster, and Cultivate Joy in Your Marriage. Married or not, this podcast is for any serious follower of Jesus. Why? Becasue we are all prone to find our joy and satisfaction and identity in anything but God and yet we get disappointed, disenchanted, and discouraged—maybe all in the same day and at the same time—because we forget that we were made to find our rest in Him, period.  Chelsea knew from an early age that she wanted to be married and she always had someone to lean on. What she didn't know was that leaning too hard on one person, even a great husband, didn't help her know who she was nor flourish as God's child. Married young, she was determined not to be one of those divorce statistics but it wasn't until the Lord showed her that she had made marriage an idol that she began to feel the freedom to be herself and help her relationship flourish instead of trying to control all the outcomes. Get your free Self-Awareness Guide HERE (how to know how selfish we are!) And, no, not a good idea to take it for your spouse! Chelsea will be hosting a giveaway of this great book all week long. Be sure to comment to be entered. Even if you aren't married, you know someone who is and might benefit from a gift of her book.  Chelsea Damon is not only the author of I Thought This Would Make Me Happy: How to Fight Less, Forgive Faster, and Cultivate Joy in Your Marriage, but also, Together with Christ: A Dating Couple's Devotional: 52 Devotions and Bible Studies to Nurture Your Relationship. She is also the author of chelseadamon.com, a website where moms and wives are encouraged in healthy, Christ-centered lives and relationships.   Damon and her husband Josh met while attending college, where they grew in their faith and dated for three years. They were married on the windy coast of Washington in 2013. Throughout their dating and marriage relationship and into parenthood, they've been learning what it means to live loving God and loving others in a self-love world. Today, the Damons have three biological children, are foster parents, and spend their time looking for new places to hike and explore beautiful South Carolina. Social Media:  https://www.instagram.com/chelsealeighdamon https://www.facebook.com/LivingTheSweetWife/ https://twitter.com/damonchels   Some gems from our conversation: A good way not to fight is to begin the conversation with: "I'm not mad about this but . . ." I was fearful to be pegged as a doormat, so I went out of my way to over control. We are quick to identify the faults in another but give ourselves a little more grace than we are willing to give. I had an unhealthy need to have "that person" in my life to make me find my place in the world. I was loving to get something back and that isn't way love is supposed to work. I needed to change where I find my security—from a person and our relationship—to God and my place in his family. It's okay to make yourself a little uncomfortable to show the love of Christ to those around me.  We need to take a good look at ourselves instead of judging how another could improve so that we are getting our needs met.  I had to learn the skill of speaking up and thinking critically without living in the fear of destroying the relationship.

Struck Inside Out

Do you ever feel like you're always chasing the next big thing, believing that happiness lies just around the corner? In this episode, we dive deep into the habit of constantly looking toward the future for joy, fulfillment, and success. I explore my personal journey with these feelings, especially how they manifest in finances and career aspirations. Together, we'll examine the impact of this mindset, how it can rob us of appreciating the present, and ways to begin cultivating happiness in the here and now. If you're ready to reflect on how to stop chasing and start embracing, this episode is for you. Here are five key takeaways from the episode: The Habit of Future-Chasing: Constantly looking to the future for happiness can lead to missing out on the present. While ambition is important, it shouldn't come at the cost of appreciating the current moment. Temporary Fixes Won't Bring Lasting Fulfillment: Achieving future goals might bring temporary satisfaction, but if you're always seeking the next thing, true contentment will always feel out of reach. Your Present Self is Enough: The belief that happiness only comes from future success devalues who you are right now. Recognizing your worth in the present can shift your mindset toward greater contentment. Emotional Patterns Drive Our Desires: Often, the desire for more comes from ingrained thought patterns. Understanding these patterns can help shift focus away from external circumstances and toward inner fulfillment. Cultivate Joy in the Now: Begin feeling the emotions you associate with future success—happiness, peace, fulfillment—right now. By embodying these feelings in the present, you can reduce the fixation on what hasn't yet happened.
