Canadian musician Harry Manx mixes blues and Eastern music traditions
Midnight Oil ("The Oils") are one of Australia's most-loved bands. Their solid political streak – Indigenous rights, the environment and nuclear disarmament, to name a few – sits well with a hard-earned reputation for red-hot live shows. Mick and Jeff look back at all the times they've seen Midnight Oil live, and the impact their music has had on Australian culture. Jeff's Rant introduces us to Beard Meats Food, a young bearded lad who consumes huge meals live on YouTube. It's been a great month for terrific live concerts, with The Sisters of Mercy, The Underground Lovers and The Pixies all playing in Sydney. We'll talk about all those shows, as well as a guy called Harry Manx, who offers a blend of blues, folk music, and Hindustani music. Today's Album You Must Hear Before You Die is “Ghosteen” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (2019). This critically-acclaimed double album is so different to his earlier music, but still definitely Cave.
My guest, Mark Radel, describes himself this way: I have always been around music. I sang in the church choir, school choirs, acted in musicals in high school, was into music but never took up an instrument. After my wife and I moved to Seattle my commute was 30 minutes and I was bored driving back and forth each day. I thought about what I could do and saw a book named "harmonica playing for dummies", with it came a cheap C major harp and a cassette. So each daly as I drove to and from work I practiced playing. When we moved back to Bellingham, WA, I got serious and started playing with others. Now I can sheepishly say I am a musician. Artists Mark mentions that he listens to: Kevin Moore, Taj Mahal Eric Clapton, Tracy Chapman, Jerry Portnoy, and Harry Manx. ********************* I want to get to know you better. Please fill out a 5-question survey at lizsumner.com/survey. Let me know when you're done and I'll send you a coupon code for my online course, 8 Steps to Launch Your Dream Life. (launchyourdreamlife.com) ********************* Opening Remarks Today's guest is a dear friend that I've known half my life. Before we moved away many years ago Mark was a fan of our music, my husband Michael's and mine-- that's that Cohen music I mention later on. Mark would often come see us perform, but he never played. It is such a pleasure in this interview to hear about his transformation as a harp player and acceptance of himself as a musician. This is what is possible when we try something we've always wanted to do. The story of Mark's journey is exactly what I was thinking about when I started this podcast. One of the things that's most interesting about Mark's process is that he started with improvisation. He didn't learn melodies or how to read music, but instead he plays by ear and instinctively. I think that's unusual and kind of courageous. Plus he is fortunate to have good friends to play with and challenge him. And I miss them all very much. I should mention that during our conversation I use some shorthand and don't explain everything because we know each other so well. Also during the interview Mark is fiddling with his harmonicas and you can hear them rattling a bit. It was a joy to reconnect with my friend and I look forward to joining in on one of the music nights he mentions in the near future. Full transcript available at https://ialwayswantedto.net

‘Without love, Evolution is a spiritual path of apathy, complacency, and lethargy. It is easy to talk the talk about love and more challenging to love our neighbour as ourselves. The evolutionary leap of this radical love calls us to reach out and love another. This is the Be-Loved community in action!' The brilliance of this description of Rev. Cassandra Rae's talk for this Sunday, What's Evolution Without Love?, is not lost on me. In my six years with CSL White Rock, my spiritual growth around Love has instilled in me such joy. And as I have opened myself up to loving others, I have experienced my self-judgment diminish and my self-love beginning to flourish. Interestingly, while my love of nature has always given me explicit pleasure…except snakes, whose sudden rustling on the trail can send me leaping in the opposite direction and mosquitos, for obvious reasons. Is there a connection? Because. as my love for others has grown, my love of nature has soared. True story: a couple of weeks ago, I stopped dead-in-my-tracks as a 2-foot long snake crossed my path. I wondered if the sharp gravel was scraping its underbelly. I marveled in awe at the beauty of its design and colour. My life-long fear and loathing had been replaced by admiration and wonder. As for mosquitos, yes, they are also God's creatures, but is it wrong to carry insect repellant? Hmmm. Our live music this week is by the wonderfully creative and talented Linda Kidder! Her sweet, loving lyrics always lift and soothe my spirit. As one of Vancouver's most sought-after session singers, Linda's recording credits include a wide range, from KD Lang, Bon Jovi, Harry Manx, and Raffi, to Rita MacNeil, and Gary Fjellgaard and hundreds of jingles praising everything from Barbie to Safeway. Did you know that Linda has three CDs of her own material? Learn more here: https://www.lindakidder.com/ Hey, join our Be-loved community this Sunday – together IS better! I admire our incredible Spiritual Director, Rev. Cassandra Rae, for her courage, compassion, and willingness to serve up the difficult topics. If the title for this week's talk, Pushed by Pain, was a Netflix movie title, I would skim right past it. That is until I read Rev. Cassandra's talk intro: ‘Suppose we didn't deny or avoid pain, but rather embraced it as an invitation to higher consciousness, deeper love, and the opportunity to be more resolute to faith in action. This week we explore pain as fertilizer, recognizing pain is not punishment, and the journey through pain can be a pathway to joy!' I marvel at Rev. Cassandra's gift for turning the most unpalatable topic into a tasty, must-see presentation. You can call me a Rev. C groupie – but having never missed any of her talks at CSL White Rock, I know her ability to share the Truth in inspiring, thought-provoking, and belief-questioning ways has helped me release many limiting beliefs and expand my views and insights. So, you will find me front-row-centre for this consciousness-raising ‘pathway to joy.' For our live music this week, we welcome the creative talent of Linda Kidder. Check out the talk from Rev. Cassandra this week below as we journey together through pain to higher consciousness, deeper love, and a pathway to joy. It's an interesting hour in The Roadhouse, with a set of Chicago blues, a set from Southern Asia, and a mix you won't find anywhere else. Willie Dixon & Memphis Slim, Harry Manx, Jackie Venson, Larkin Poe, and Mojo Morganfield take the bandstand in the hour. It's exactly what we do - grab a big pile of blues, stir it all together and serve it up as another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

This time I get to spend some time with one if my favourite artists. Harry Manx talks about letting go and being at peace. Beautiful.
Setting off on an adventure that has no determined destination creates its own energy. Expectations aren’t about getting somewhere – they’re more about being where you are – each step its own destination. In a moment, drinking water from my flask to get the dust from my throat becomes necessary, and one of the great all consuming activities of my life. There was a man who played professional baseball many years ago – no one knew how old he was – some said he had to be in his 60s when he retired from the game. But nobody knew for sure, him included. He’d quote Mark Twain in way of an answer to the question, how old are you? "age is a question of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." He was perpetually tall, not stooped. He was thin and athletic with a cool ease of going, of being, a strut that’d hold people where they stood. When asked how he kept in such good shape, what was the secret of his longevity, he said simply, well sir, you gotta remember to jingle and you gotta remember to jangle. That works for me. And with that he smiled and walked away, his next step exactly where he was, and exactly where he was going. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/peter-smith05/message

"Some days it's ham and bacon; other days there ain't nothin' shakin'!" So claims globetrotting blues legend, Harry Manx. From his secluded back yard on Salt Spring Island off the Western Canadian coast, Harry creates and refines his unique fusion of Eastern and Western sound and song. Harry has refashioned classic Mississippi Delta Blues with the use of the Mohan veena, a 20-string instrument with the particularly haunting and mystical sound of the Indian subcontinent's regional legacy. Harry's fans around the world refer to the genre he invented as "Mystic-sippi Blues". He shares tips on creating your own "brand" in writing, composing, and performing based on how your life experiences make you distinctive. And what about marketing? Harry describes how he formed his own record label, found an agent, and his own delicate balance between composing / recording and touring / performing. This former roadie and "sound engineer turned musician" (Rush, Crowbar) has a treasure trove of quotable quotes borne of years in the studio and on the road. Listen. Learn. Loosen up. The music of the 107th Roadhouse Podcast came as a series of small surprises throughout the week - cuts that popped up in the iPod and just stayed with me. Sunset Travelers, Sue Foley, Doug Cox and Sam Hurrie, Dave Gross, and Harry Manx take the lead in yet another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.
