Morrison, Service Leader: Brandie-Moller-Reid Chimes Welcome and Announcements Land Acknowledgement Prelude Chalice Lighting All Animal Chalice by Mark Causey We light this chalice, spark of the original fire of creation, to remind us that we all on the planet – the furred, the feathered, the finned, and the scaled, along with us featherless bipeds – we are all made of the same star-stuff and all share a common destiny. We all share the same hopes of a life free from harm and suffering, and the same aspirations of happiness, love, and flourishing – being able to express our own unique natures and capacities as best we may. We are just that many diverse perspectives from which the whole is seen and experienced. We are inextricably intertwined, interconnected, and interdependent. And it is good. A Tale of a Cat and a String"So what's 155 inches long and cost $5,000?" asks C."The piece of string we had surgically removed from the inside of our cat last week," replies Torya. And so begins the story of Jasper, affectionately known as Mr. Purrs, and his recent health scare. It all started when Jasper began vomiting for two straight days. Concerned for his well-being, we rushed him to the vet, where an X-ray revealed a linear object in his colon. Little did we know that this object would turn out to be a 155.5-inch long piece of white thread."He unthreaded the sewing machine and took it off himself," Torya explains. "A sewing machine that was somewhere where he shouldn't have been in the first place."The vet suggested keeping Jasper overnight to hydrate him and see if the thread would pass naturally. However, the next day brought more complications, including a fever and high calcium levels. It was clear that surgery was necessary to remove the foreign object from Jasper's insides. The Decision-Making ProcessThe vet presented us with two options: an ultrasound or surgery. Surprisingly, she recommended surgery as the first choice, acknowledging that the diagnostic test would likely lead to surgery anyway. This honest approach was refreshing, as it saved us from unnecessary expenses and allowed us to focus on Jasper's well-being.Less than two hours after the phone call, Jasper was undergoing surgery. The vet successfully removed the 155.5-inch thread from his insides, and we were relieved to hear that there were no lacerations or visible damage to his intestines.Jasper's Road to RecoveryJasper's recovery has been a rollercoaster of emotions. From his initial sassy attitude to his dramatic demands for attention, he has kept us on our toes. But despite his mischievous behavior, we can't help but be grateful that he's back to his feisty self."He's been a right menace today," Torya admits. "Yesterday, if I didn't pet him every 3 seconds like he demanded, he would knock things off my table, including full cans of soda into my power strip."But amidst the chaos, we can see that Jasper is healing. He's slowly returning to his normal routine, demanding pets and attention in his own unique way. And while he may still have a few more days of medication and a cone of shame to contend with, we have hope that he will make a full recovery. The Importance of Supportive FriendsIn times of crisis, the support of friends can make all the difference. We were fortunate to have the guidance and expertise of our vet, who not only provided excellent care for Jasper but also offered us honest advice and support throughout the process. But it wasn't just our vet who provided support. Our friend Brian Little and his podcast, Your Favorite Blockhead, have been a source of entertainment and comfort during this challenging time. We encourage you to check out his show, where he weaves together peanuts and MMA into one amazing podcast.Reflections on Life's Ups and DownsJasper's journey reminds us of the unpredictable nature of life. One moment, everything seems fine, and the next, we're faced with unexpected challenges. But it's how we navigate these challenges that defines us.Through Jasper's ordeal, we've learned the importance of being proactive and seeking help when needed. We've also come to appreciate the resilience and strength of our furry friends, who can bounce back from even the most difficult situations. The Future OutlookAs Jasper continues his recovery, we look forward to the day when he can finally have his stitches removed. We remain cautiously optimistic, knowing that the next few days are crucial for his well-being. But with the support of our vet, the love of our friends, and the determination of our feisty feline, we believe that Jasper will come out of this stronger than ever.In conclusion, life is full of ups and downs, and it's how we handle these challenges that truly matters. Whether it's a 155.5-inch thread or a seemingly insurmountable obstacle, we must face them head-on with resilience and determination. And with the support of friends and loved ones, we can overcome anything that comes our way.So, as we bid you goodnight, we encourage you to cherish the moments of joy, navigate the challenges with grace, and always remember to lend a helping hand to those in need. Because in the end, it's the connections we forge and the love we share that make life truly worth living.Goodnight, everyone.Thank you for listening to The Nightly Rant. On this episode of the Pet Question of the Day, Stephanie discusses the different reasons why our cats Purr and how it works! Why Does My Cat Purr? A lot of you have asked this question and there are a number of reasons why cats purr. Let's talk first about the HOW they purr. Simply put, cats are able to purr thanks to muscles in their diaphragm and larynx, and something called a Hyoid bone. When you hear a cat purr, you'll notice that they make the sound both while they inhale and exhale. This is because the muscles of their larynx and their diaphragm are moving VERY quickly, like 20 to 30 times a second quickly, and this causes the air to vibrate and make sound. They also have that Hyoid bone. That bone sits between their tongue and their larynx and its flexible! The size and density of this bone is what enables them to make the purring sound as they breathe. Studies have shown that these muscles get stronger over time and typically once your cat reaches the age of two, that purr will be their purr for the rest of their lives. You may notice during this time that their “voice” has changed. We've experienced that happening. Purring is meant as a form of communication. Cats use it to communicate with other cats, with humans and to calm themselves. One thing that can vary is how loud a purr can be! Older cats can and often do purr more loudly than their younger counterparts, and of course they have humans well trained. Young cats learn how to use the purr to communicate emotions and needs. When kittens are first born they are both blind and deaf, so, researchers believe they use the purr to communicate with their mothers while nursing. Cats purr to communicate with humans, to express happiness, contentment, excitement, hunger, heat cycles, anxiety or even pain. We are most familiar with the happy purr and the quest for food purr. Dare to let her bowl drop below the full mark and you will hear all about it. The food bowl saga is REAL and she will let you know, often with a high pitched mixture of both meow and purr. But across the board, you will know this purr. Experts labeled this the “solicitation purr”. She wants food, or she wants attention. But there are actual studies about this kind of purr and they showed that the “solicitation purr” is most used by adult cats and directed toward humans to solicit food.”This purr has a high frequency component within it that human participants consistently judged as more urgent and less pleasant than a ‘normal' purr.” Thus, my yowler. She clearly got the memo years ago. “The frequencies of this ‘voiced peak' correspond to those of human infant distress cries, which could explain why they are so easily perceived by humans as urgent.” Thank you, Dr. Valuska. You are accurate. So cats purr to communicate and to train us to understand what they need and when they need it. Now, they will actually also purr if they are in pain or distress. They really do. Or if they are anxious about something. They'll purr and it helps to soothe them. So the key is to know and understand your cat so that you are aware of patterns in their behavior. If their purr is suddenly different and you notice other triggers, there may be a health issue or illness coming and it's best to get them checked out. Purrs can be soft or loud, or VERY loud. I personally had a cat that purred like a little freight train! You could hear her engine revving from two rooms away! It was the sweetest thing. Cats also have a healing quality to their purr and it has everything to do with the frequency of it! It's been documented! Why Do Cats Purr? An Investigation Into A Purr-fect Mystery Science Friday recently received a voicemail from a listener named Violet from Maui, Hawai'i, who wanted to know: Why do cats purr? We wanted to see what other cat lovers knew about cat purring. So we sent our talented SciFri colleagues Diana Montano and Kyle Marian Viterbo to the Meow Parlor, a cat cafe in New York City to find out. Guest host Katherine Wu, who recently wrote about why cats purr for The Atlantic, also talks with Robert Eklund, professor of language, culture, and phonetics at Linköping University in Linköping, Sweden. He explains what we do and don't know about how and why cats purr. How To Digitally Recreate Darth Vader's Voice From A War Zone James Earl Jones played Darth Vader for 45 years. But this September, he officially stepped down from the role. Fear not, Star Wars fans—the villain isn't gone for good. Instead, the filmmakers have teamed up with the Ukrainian AI company Respeecher to recreate his voice. Respeecher can convert one person's speech into the voice of another. The company's work has appeared in the Star Wars canon already, as Young Luke Skywalker in “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett.” And just last month, they debuted their Darth Vader mimic in the T.V. show “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” They always knew that it would be challenging to recreate Vader's iconic voice. But their job got a whole lot harder when Russian troops invaded their nation. Respeecher chief technology officer Dmytro Bielievtsov and sound engineer Bogdan Belyaev join guest host Kathleen Davis to talk about their work. Toxic Death Cap Mushrooms Take Root In The Mountain West Toxic mushrooms are not unusual in the Mountain West. “This is probably a lepiota,” said Susan Stacy, looking at a mushroom on a recent afternoon in a Boise, Idaho, neighborhood not far from downtown. “See that little dark nub in the middle and little flecks around here?” Stacy turned to her mushroom identification book. “Edibility: to be avoided. Perhaps poisonous,” she said. While this little mushroom could be problematic for a curious dog or child, it doesn't compare to one of the world's deadliest mushrooms – which Stacy discovered in Boise last September. She remembers that it was a hot day, and she decided to take a detour from her normal route to check out a busier area where many lawns were “generously” watered. “And here I come upon this mushroom, and I knew it was an Amanita because I had seen them before. And an Amanita, to my mind, is a gorgeous, statuesque, elegant creation. They're just stately,” she said. The genus Amanita includes, incidentally, the species on which the red and white mushroom emoji is likely based, which also happens to be poisonous. Read the rest of this story on sciencefriday.com Will A Hotter World Make Jellyfish Haute Cuisine? The ocean is filled with delicious ingredients, but our favorite seafood items might not stick around on menus forever … thanks to climate change taking its toll on fisheries. As a result, scientists are thinking more and more about what the future of food is going to look like—what ingredients we should eat more, and what we should eat less. That could mean we'll eat more items like kelp, oysters, and mussels, which are a great source of nutrients, since they can be sustainably harvested. But there's another seafood that's being encouraged as a food of the future. But it's a little more unfamiliar—and maybe surprising—to most of the world. It's jellyfish. Although it's a fairly common ingredient in several countries, like China and Vietnam, it hasn't quite broken into the international market yet. Guest host Katherine Wu talks with Agostino Petroni, a journalist based in Rome who reported on the topic for Hakai Magazine, and Dr. Antonella Leone, a researcher at the Italian National Research Council's Institute of Sciences of Food Production, based in Lecce, Italy. They talk about the benefits of jellyfishing, what it's going to take to catapult jellyfish into the international seafood market, and their favorite jellyfish recipes. Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

The long-running electronic duo Matmos have just released a gorgeous new LP, Regards / Ukłony dla Bogusław Schaeffer. Whereas their previous album, 2020's The Consuming Flame: Open Exercises in Group Form, saw the couple collaging contributions from 99 friends recorded at 99 bpm, their latest is dedicated to the work of just one person: Polish polymath Bogusław Schaeffer (1929-2019). In this episode, we discuss how their reputation for conceptualism has often served to obscure the formal characteristics of their work. Can an object be a concept? Is “washing machine” or “plastic” a concept? With their signature blend of serious humor, the pair reflect on touring with a washing machine, the practicalities of licensing music, and the complexities of working with Schaeffer's archive. Three times is a charm. Joseph presents his thrice completed, once released magnum opus topic this week... Elisa Lam! As Joseph once stated, "it is a podcast staple." Elisa Lam was a young woman who met a mysterious and tragic end. She went missing while vacationing in the US and then was found naked and deceased in a water tank atop the place at which she was staying, the Cecil Hotel. Oh yeah, the guys take everyone along their usual amusing tangents. Thanks to The Purrs for use of their music.
We made it to half a year of released content and none of us are dead or in prison! While we recuperate, enjoy this compilation of some of our best "commercials." They include adult video promos, exorcist who aren't afraid to kill, and other random weirdness. A special thanks to the Purrs for music in SSRI commercial. Just a reminder: New episodes will release on Weds starting next week when we return with shiny new content for your waxy holes. In the meantime, maybe do some work on yourself. We're looking at you, Kristie...

Important Events 1822Today is the anniversary of the death of a two-time Governor of South Carolina, the founder of the University of South Carolina, a writer, and a botanist John Drayton. Drayton grew up in Charleston, a hub of botanical activity. He knew the French royal gardener Andre Michaux and his son, who had settled in the area. The Michaux's introduced the camellias and Indian azaleas; Joel Roberts Poinsett, the man who discovered the Poinsettia, was also a son of Charleston. And, the gardener Chancellor Waddy Thompson and Benjamin Perry also helped to shape the horticulture scene in the Greenville area. Drayton is remembered for his 1807 unpublished book “The Carolinian Florist.” Drayton listed almost a thousand plants, when they flowered, and where they could be found. Drayton presented his work to the South Carolina College library in 1807. The University South Carolina Society published it in 1943. Drayton explored Paris Mountain and the Greenville Area. He discovered the fragrant yellow honeysuckle (Lonicera flava Sims “Lah-NISS-er-ah FLAY-vah”) - commonly known as yellow honeysuckle - growing on the south side of Paris Mountain. The name Lonicera was derived from the name of the German herbalist Adam Lonitzer (1527-1586). The specific epithet "flava" and variations all reference the yellow ('flavus') or yellowish '(flavescens') color of the flowers. Honeysuckle is also known as woodbine or goat's leaf. 1832 Today is the birthday of the French modernist painter Édouard Manet (“Mah-nay”). His painting, 'Music in the Tuileries Gardens,' ("TWEE-luh-Reehs"), was his first significant work depicting modern city life. Manet grew peonies in his garden at Gennevilliers (“Jen-vill-EE-aye”). They were reportedly his favorite flower. Manet’s paintings of peonies were the perfect marriage of his skill and the subject. Manet’s loose brushwork was perfect for the petals and leaves. When the explorer Marco Polo saw peonies for the first time, he wrote that they were, “Roses as big as cabbages." In Chinese, the peony is known as the sho-yu, which means “most beautiful.” Traditionally, peonies are used to celebrate the 12th wedding anniversary. If you planted one on your Anniversary, the peony could outlive you. Peonies can live for over 100 years. 1862Today, the Hungarian vintner, Agoston Haraszthy, brought 1,400 varieties of grapevines from Europe to California and planted the first vineyard in the Sonoma Valley in California. Haraszthy's family was Hungarian nobility. Haraszthy had gotten hold of a book that reported the Wisconsin territory offered the finest land in America. So, in 1840, he immigrated to the United States. He quickly discovered Wisconsin was not the place for growing grapes. In short order, Haraszthy made his way to San Francisco during the Gold Rush. But San Francisco was not a fit with the grapes, either. It was foggy and cold. But then, in 1857, Haraszthy found the Sonoma Valley - called the "Valley of the Moon" by the writer Jack London. After a dozen years of searching, Haraszthy had found a place suitable for growing purple gold. The Sonoma Valley was the perfect place to grow European grapes - which were more delicate and finicky than North American wild grapes. Giddy with hope, Haraszthy built a white villa for his wife and six children on a property he named Buena Vista or “Good View.” Haraszthy also brought many European growing methods to his estate in California. First, he grew the grape plants closer together. This was something other growers found unwise. But Haraszthy knew that growing grapes near each other stressed the vines, which in turn, made better-tasting grapes. Second, Haraszthy was the first vinedresser to grow his grapes on the mountainsides in California. There is an old saying that the God of wine, Bacchus, loved the hills. Well, Haraszthy’s grapevines loved them, too. Finally, Haraszthy performed a green harvest - something no one had ever heard of - Least of all Haraszthy’s neighbors. Today the technique is known as dropping fruit; it merely means doing an initial early harvest of some of the grapes. The benefit of fewer grapes on the vine is that it improves the flavor of the remaining grapes. Haraszthy also brought in a team of Chinese laborers, and they worked to dig out the first wine caves in the state. The most impressive accomplishment included a 100-foot-deep stone wine cellar built on the side of a hill. In 1863, Haraszthy incorporated his vineyard as the Buena Vista Vinicultural Society. Thanks to investors, Haraszthy purchased an additional 4,000 acres making Buena Vista the second largest vineyard in the state. In 1866, a vine disease swept through the area. Haraszthy’s neighbors reactively blamed his unique growing methods for the small tasteless grapes and the brown, dying vines. In reality, the disease was Phylloxera, which is caused by an aphid that attacks vine roots. Phylloxera causes grapes to harden on the vine. It wiped out Buena Vista. Haraszthy filed for bankruptcy. With his vineyard and his reputation in tatters, Haraszthy went south to Nicaragua. He planted a massive sugar plantation, and he planned to make and sell a new beverage: rum. But, on July 6, 1869, as he was reaching for a vine while crossing a river on his property. He lost his balance, fell into the river, and was eaten by an alligator. Today, Haraszthy is remembered as “The Father of California Viticulture” (Wine-Making). In 1946, a plaque to Haraszthy was dedicated on the plaza of Sonoma. In March 2007, Haraszthy was inducted into the Vintners Hall of Fame by the Culinary Institute of America. 1866Today is the anniversary of the death of Prussian landscape architect and gardener Peter Joseph Lenné ("Linny"). Lenné is regarded as the most important Prussian garden-artist of the 19th century. He was the director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Berlin and Potsdam. Peter came from a long line of gardeners. In many respects, his accomplishments mirror those of his younger colleague across the ocean, Frederick Law Olmsted. Lenné cofounded a Royal Horticultural Society in Germany. He worked tirelessly designing parks and landscape areas with green spaces. Lenné admired William Kent, whom he named “the father of the new landscape architecture.” Lenné established English landscape garden designs in Germany. Many of his designed spaces are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Lenné’s legacy includes over 100 designed spaces from including parks, gardens, canals, and avenues. Rauch memorialized Lenné with a large bust in the garden of the new palace in Potsdam. The Magnolia Lenne variety was named in his honor. Today, the Peter-Joseph-Lenné-Prize of Berlin awards fresh and creative ideas for design, planning, and use of plants in garden architecture and landscape planning. 2009The Denver Post reported that a retired English professor and amateur botanist named Al Schneider and a Colorado State University Botany student named Peggy Lyon discovered a new plant in the Asteraceae, or sunflower, family and it was called Gutierrezia elegans. ("Goo-tee-ah-REEZ-ee-ah") Al and Peggy named their variety “elegans” for its elegant qualities of symmetry. The common name of the plant that Al and Peggy discovered is the Lone Mesa snakeweed. The Spanish botanist Mariano La Gasca, who originated the Gutierrezia genus named in honor of the apothecary and professor Pedro Gutiérrez Bueno. Gutierrezia is a group of flowering plants native to western North America and western South America. Native peoples have regarded this plant family as an essential source of medicine, and plants of this genus are known generally as snakeweeds or match weeds. Unearthed Words The days are short The sun a spark Hung thin between The dark and dark. Fat snowy footsteps Track the floor And parkas pile up Near the door. The river is A frozen place Held still beneath The trees' black lace The sky is low. The wind is gray. The radiator Purrs all day. — John Updike, January Grow That Garden Library The Cabaret of Plants by Richard Mabey Richard Mabey has a passion for plants that come through in this beautiful book called The Cabaret of plants. As a naturalist, Richard says, he has written, "a story about plants as authors of their own lives and an argument that ignoring their vitality impoverishes our imaginations and our well-being.” Mabey is a naturalist with the voice of a poet. Mabey challenges ordinary perceptions of plants: that they are inactive, that they are background, or that they are simply props for the outdoors. Like Peter Wohlleben, Mabey sees these plants as having a self. "The Cabaret of Plants" is loaded with beautiful stories and tidbits from science, literature, and botany. It's engaging and challenging and inspiring. Mabey has been interacting with the natural world for over four decades. His 1972 book called “Food for Free” was revolutionary and taught readers how to forage. This book came out in 2015. You can get a used copy of The Cabaret of Plants by Richard Mabey and support the show, using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for under $5. Today’s Botanic Spark 1942Today the garden writer Elizabeth Lawrence wrote to her friend, the playwright, Ann Preston Bridgers: “We had thin toast and your wild strawberry jam for tea this afternoon by the fire in my studio... Bessie and I took a salad and a pan of rolls and went to have supper with your family last night. Mrs. B. insisted upon adding both ham and chicken. We had [Ann’s mountain friend] Blanche’s walnuts for dessert. And Robert and I made Cleopatras, not so good, somehow, like the ones at Christmas… I must put the puppy to bed before he chews up all the files of Gardening Illustrated.”

So the last time we talked about Harry Potter we broke down what makes an interesting and viable magic system, this time we mostly just talk about how to make Hogwarts sexy. Fair warning: this episode is definitely one of our more explicit episodes, BUT IN A FUN WAY! We decided to put our money where our mouths were and brought on some Harry Potter experts to take a stab at building a better magic school, and populating it with 4 houses that would put J.K. Rowling to shame. We also talk about things we actually like about our boy HP, and ways to take inspiration from Ms. Rowling's works. Also I apologize to all our headphones listeners for breaking your sweet little ears this week, it got pretty buck wild here. If you're interested in finding more of our wonderful guests this week you can find Maya at @ohfrocute on twitter, and Nick at... nowhere! Sorry friends he's all ours! A rather unusual episode this week, cadets, and not just because Co-Cap'n Mike is confined to quarters with the Space Sinus! Cap'n Charles and Admiral William Gallagher from AppleInsider fall into a bizarre alternate universe where Thunderbolt is USB (and vice versa!), Huawei prosecutes the US government, and teenagers give Apple details of security issues with no hint of an expectation of a reward. Not only that, but in this strange dimension videogame APIs are anti-malware tools, and CEOs adopt the last name of the companies they work for! It's crazy! Also in this bizarro universe, Intel has still more chip-level vulnerabilities to patch, Qualcomm only wants pocket change for a patent they may have stolen from Apple, and to top it off -- you really won't believe this one -- Apple declines to join the rest of the industry in their effort to prevent songwriters from getting a long-overdue royalty raise! Not only that, but the mirror-mirror, beard-sporting European Union appears to have decided not, that's NOT, to create a special tax on tech companies! What??! Does gravity even work in this up-is-down dimension? Wait, what's that on the viewscreen? DirecTV Now adopts Single Sign-On?! Sony plays nice with iOS?! And -- just as icing on the space cake that we're not in Kansas Sector anymore -- Nintendo doesn't want developers to gouge users! We've gone down the one-hour wormhole, cadets, so remember: until Mike gets a clean bill of health from sickbay, everything you know may is wrong!

Benny Giang, co-founder of CryptoKitties and product manager at Axiom Zen, joins Ben and Jay to talk about how CryptoKitties took the world by storm at the ETHWaterloo hackathon, ushering in the biggest moment in crypto since Bitcoin. Benny recalls the excitement that fueled CryptoKitties, as the company blew every expectation out of the water, flipping the crypto space on its head and for the first time making writing lines of code, shipping product and being profitable (in three weeks) cooler than slinging white papers and ideas for changing the world. Benny talks about the changing digital asset space and pays homage to CryptoKitties' predecessors including CryptoPunks, Pepe, and Spells of Genesis, who were the first to truly explore art on blockchain. He also delves into the value of providing a "gaming component" -- breeding of cats on chain -- to make Ethereum more accessible, and why this "super cute and fun" part of the game is what truly separates CryptoKitties. Benny recalls how CryptoKitties nearly crippled Ethereum (at one point they were nearly 25% of the total ETH traffic), and blocked several ICOs from launching at the time. We dive into CryptoKitties' impact of the feature of digital art and collectibles, and how nearly 800,000 unique cat options and the subsequent four billion variations that can be achieved by breeding "Fancy Cats" and releasing various "Exclusive Cats" is shaping the digital asset landscape. Benny describes why the non-fungible, ERC-721 tokens are key to quickly being able to provide the type of third-party assessment of value needed for digital collectibles. Benny provides tips for what it takes to successfully launch in China and avoid surprises including understanding the Chinese mentality; managing firewalls (no Facebook and Google, no Google Cloud, etc.); the ban on ICOs and crypto; the huge opportunity that comes with so much gaming and developer talent; private blockchains; managing the impact of large corporate copycats; and getting distribution. Benny gets excited about how CryptoKitties are being used to support causes; ETH developer Nick Johnson turned a kitty he received for identifying bugs on the platform into cows for farmers in Africa, and how a 12-year old named Bella raised $15k by selling cats, which she donated to the Seattle Children’s Hospital. CryptoKitties slows their roll on the merchandise, in favor of thinking about what it'll take to get themselves into MoMA.
