Just a few months on the job, new AAMI President and CEO Robert Jensen describes his vision for the association, how his time as a Marine officer helped to prepare him for this job, and the opportunities (and challenges) he sees for the healthcare technology community. A crucial part of AAMI's mission, Jensen said, is to help provide "visionary ideas" so that the professionals on the frontlines of healthcare technology can "craft the future that will actually serve the patients and the full community." Jensen shares with podcast host Terry Baker his idea of what success at AAMI will look like under his leadership. Sponsored by: Healthmark Produced By: AAMI and Healthcare Tech Talk

We have been on a bit of a summer hiatus here at Healthcare Tech Talk, but we are back in the editing room and ready to begin publishing new episodes. Today though we present to you an important episode of the AAMI Podcast. If you enjoy it please subscribe to the show. Hospitals are under pressure to draft and implement comprehensive policies that show they have a handle on the crucial patient safety issue of alarm fatigue. There’s been an explosion in the number of medical devices with alarms and alerts, resulting in a noisy healthcare setting and desensitizing clinicians to the meaning or importance of alarms. With more alarms going off, the intended goal of alerting clinicians to true emergencies has been diminished, and patient safety has been imperiled. Ronald Wyatt, MD, the patient safety officer and medical director at The Joint Commission and Maria Cvach, DNP, CCRN, director of policy management and integration for the Johns Hopkins Health System in Baltimore, MD, talk about what hospitals should be doing—and how they can make a positive difference with effective clinical alarm management. A string of recent, highly publicized "Ransomware" attacks have many healthcare organizations and their vendors scrambling to protect themselves and spurred the FBI to publish a Flash Alert. These attacks are a fairly new paradigm for hospitals after years of protecting themselves from the theft of patient information, hospitals now must worry about the encryption and potential destruction of their data. These attacks seem to be cruder and easier to carry out, but could be even more disruptive and damaging to a healthcare organization. Today we talk with two experts about how organizations can begin taking the fundamental steps required to protect themselves. Brad Taylor is CEO of Proficio, a leading Managed Security Services Provider. He has 20+ years’ experience in creating services that safeguard enterprise networks against cyber threats, with strong focus on healthcare environments and highly regulated industries. Adam Laub, Senior Vice President, Product Marketing, STEALTHbits Technologies. He is responsible for setting product strategy, defining future roadmap, driving strategic sales engagements, supporting demand generation activities, enabling the sales organization and all aspects of product evangelism. In 1956 the first practical implementation of a paging system was setup to pager physicians in New York. Fast forward 60 years and pagers seem to be making healthcare their final stand. The modern healthcare environment is much more demanding and complex than in 1956. Alerts from clinical systems, order notifications from the EMR and messages between clinicians not only need to be routed properly, they need to be acknowledged. Today we talk with Marc Ladin, Chief Marketing Officer of Tiger Text, about a recent study regarding the Hidden Cost of Pagers in Healthcare and the possibilities of a secure messaging platform. Far too often Healthcare providers aren’t talking to each other – patients don’t know this. If you visit the ER, does your Primary Care Physician have a clue, does your dialysis provider? Are you sure? In this episode we are joined by Joseph Mayer, MD. He is the co-founder and CEO of Cureatr, which provides seamless communication between doctors, streamlined workflows and real-time mobile push notifications to alert care providers when their patients are treated in any care setting within their region. Joe's inspiration to start Cureatr came during his residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. Immersed in the fast-paced ER, he lived the time-delay frustration of tracking down primary care physicians to alert them about patient treatment. He knew that he could speed this communication, reduce admin work to save time, human resources and dollars. Joe launched the pilot for Cureatr while at Mt. Sinai and his quick expansion, with a national presence on the near horizon, coincided with the seismic healthcare shift of fee-for-service to value-based. Healthcare providers, in this new landscape of risk and responsibility, need a seamless approach for better care coordination among a community of care providers. In this provocative conversation, Stephen Grimes, chief technology officer of ABM Healthcare Support Services, says healthcare technology management (HTM) professionals must rethink the entire concept of preventive maintenance or PM. Given the marked changes in medical devices—with technology that is far more sophisticated and complex—Grimes says the traditional notion of PM is antiquated, and HTM professionals must think instead of “planned or scheduled maintenance.” A continued focus on past PM practices and policies, Grimes says, will leave HTM departments in the position of “blacksmith shops that are trying to support a Boeing 787 or Airbus A380.” ANSI/AAMI EQ89:2015 Guidance for the use of medical equipment maintenance strategies and procedures Produced By: AAMI and Healthcare Tech Talk

The notion of “systems thinking” is one that has been adopted in a number of industries, such as aviation and defense. It’s a concept that’s getting more attention in healthcare as its delivery gets more complicated, technical, and interconnected. What does systems thinking mean? How will it impact how medical devices are designed and used? What does it mean for patient safety in hospitals? A trio of experts debate these questions and others, explaining why healthcare needs to move away from a “blame and shame” mindset and toward a culture that embraces learning from mistakes, more transparency, and greater collaboration. The guests are Kenneth Hoyme, a distinguished scientist at Adventium Labs; Anne O’Neil, an independent systems engineering consultant; and Patricia Trbovich, a human factors specialist with University Health Network in Toronto. Tubing misconnections are a significant threat to patient safety. The accidental connection of different delivery systems—through which patients receive medication, nutrients and other fluids—can result in serious patient harm, even death. A number of organizations, including AAMI, and federal regulators have banded together to work on a new initiative that aims to reduce that risk through the development and use of new small-bore connectors and standards. The FDA’s Scott Colburn and Pamela Scott, both with the Center for Devices and Radiological Health, join Thomas Hancock, with the Global Enteral Device Supplier Association (GEDSA), and Tricia Otstot, a nurse whose mother died as a result of a tubing misconnection, to talk about this important issue. Hours, even days, could be spent on the subject of ventilator technology and all of its challenges, innovations, and nuances. This episode we sit down with three industry experts to discuss the complications associated with ventilator technology innovations outpacing the standards needed for them. The tremendous movement of ventilator technology in the last decade coupled with the void of a universal vocabulary has resulted in the absence of standardized modes and nomenclature essential to medical device communication. This lack of standardization rattles practitioners; ability to transition from one ventilator to another, interrupts workflow, and can potentially impact patient safety and outcomes. Listen to learn more about efforts being made to change the current landscape and unify ventilator technology.
