In this episode of A Tale of Two Hygienists, Jessica and Dave sit down with implant maintenance expert Alison Stahl to unpack the hidden risks surrounding dental implants — and why successful implant therapy requires far more than simply placing the implant. Alison explains why implants remain vulnerable to periodontal and systemic disease, why water flossers are essential for long-term implant health, and how palpation and 3D radiographs can dramatically improve diagnosis and treatment outcomes. She also reveals why stainless steel instruments may be damaging implants without clinicians realizing it and shares the essential protocols every hygienist should know when treating implant patients. From single implants to full-arch fixed prostheses, this conversation challenges outdated approaches to implant care and highlights what modern clinicians need to protect both the implant and the patient. Not surprisingly, the Bert Jansch Foundation has backed this release, but Grassie brings plenty of his own style and personality to bear here. Sam supplies vocals and acoustic guitars, with guests on saxophone, double bass, flute, clairsach, clarinet, and backing vocals. Audio Experiments by Steve Broomhead favorite track Reflekt Multi-instrumentalist Steve Broomhead offers this collection of pieces of music that he felt didn't fit with his other releases. They all fit quite nicely here, most are eerie and/or with a feeling impending doom, right up my deep and dark alley. Reflekt is very representative of the whole, although First Light also vies for my favourite. Topography of Mind by Telegraph favorite track Topography of Mind Israeli band Telegraph is a bit of a throwback to classic prog blended with psych and space rock. Instrumentation is the usual, guitars, bass, drums, plus synthesizers and other keyboards, and flute, with vocals as well. All of the tracks are epic in scope, as well as length, on this fine release. Nagalite by LILI REFRAIN favorite track Nagal This multi-instrumentalist and vocalist hails from Rome. The tracks are meditations on metamorphosis, evoking rituals and renewals by her eerie vocals and phantasmagorical production of the music. Instrumentation is guitars, bass, synths, bass drum, and drum machine. Enter the enthralling world evoked here. Glassman by jonasmeersmans favorite track Glassman Belgian fingerstyle guitarist and composer combines acoustic and electric guitars with looping layers, along with guests on violin, keyboards, double bass, and electric bass. The music touches on ambient, soundtrack, chamber, and jazz, in this ear-catching release. The Undone is Done Again by Tanya Donelly and Chris Brokaw favorite track Sainte Nicholaes Combining forces, Bostonians Tanya Donelly and Chris Brokaw reimagine some Medieval pieces using modern instrumentation. Tanya's haunting voice and Chris' brooding and echo-y guitars create a sense of antiquity, as if recorded in a monastery. Lizardcore by Iguanahead favorite track Sage Nifty hard psych band from Nashville, proving that not everyone there wears a cowboy hat. This trio utilizes the classic instrumentation of guitars, bass, and drums (vocals, too), adding dashes of metal, doom, and prog to lift this a cut above the others in this ouevre. Thy Shadow by Beautiful Death favorite track Thy Shadow Aussie solo artist influenced by dark metal utilizes the simple beauty of an acoustic guitar to bring dark folk themes to life. Unsurprisingly, there is a achingly melancholic thread throughout all of the pieces. Anti-war by Mind Overclock favorite track Anti-war These two songs could have been written during the Vietnam Era, yet sadly, they are new, because here we are again. They evoke much of the spirit of the anti-war movement of the times, and they do it so very well. Psych seems to go hand in hand with the idealism of peace and this band delivers it in spades.

He offers the 4 tracks as one complete suite, which then is also separated out into individual pieces. My favourite here is his paean to the old Sycamore Gap tree that was attacked in Northumberland, which has since been regenerating. Schlafes Bruder by Andy Aquarius, Kimi Recor favorite track Back To The Fire Andy Aquarius has teamed up with Kimi Recor on this fine sort-of-EP. Andy plays Celtic harp, synths, and provides some vocals, and Kimi sings and plays monochord, a type of ancient stringed instrument. As the instrumentation suggests, there is an uncannily ethereal feeling to these tracks. My favourite track (Back To The Fire) utilizes Kimi's crystalline vocals to their fullest, creating an atmosphere drenched in melancholy and lamentation. Psych Against Cancer Vol 3 Part 2 by Psych Lovers favorite track Spinning Through Eternity This is the second of this year's benefit release for Macmillan Cancer Support, a whopping 55 tracks of psych and space music. As anyone knows who has experienced it, hospice is a wonderful support in a time that is so difficult to experience. Choosing my own contribution, Tom Kelly’s “Spinning Through Eternity,” but I also highly recommend Empty House, Helicon, and Vincent Carr's SUMIC The Veils “Lungs” Single 2026 Ahead of a new full-length release, Australian artist Tim Andrews has released this single. There is a delicate touch in the orchestration, as there was in Asphodels, but has a more hopeful feel. This is a wish for things to go well, for new beginnings somewhere different, for a life full of love shared. (3:46) Under Celestial Alignments by Nordic Giants UK neo-classical, ambient, post rock duo return with this lovely all instrumental release. Their sound is lush and orchestral, pianos and strings feature largely here. A start to finish listening is highly recommended, as each piece flows so well into the next. Citizen Of Glass by Agnes Obel favorite track Familiar Moody release from this multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and composer from Berlin. Arrangements are rather spare, yet also somehow lush. Instrumentation includes various keyboards and percussion, cello, violin, and trautonium (which is an instrument from the 1920s that sounds like glass, you will know what it is, when you hear it). The harmonies on my favourite track are chillingly unearthly. No Return Address by Mind Overclock favorite track Cold Distance Can psych be both bluesy and whimsical? Of course it can! This band proves that, with this nifty EP. Dreamy, velvety vocals; warbly, spiky, fuzzy guitars; and flights of fancy abound. I'm choosing Cold Distance to indicate what to expect, but please don't hesitate to check out the charm of enjoying Breakfast On Orion.) Heol Las by Huw Marc Bennett favorite track Y Fedwen (The Birch) Welshman Huw Marc Bennett, a multi-instrumentalist and composer pulls from folk, psych and jazz with these lovely original tunes. Delightfully bucolic, these tracks all bring visions of medieval village and farm life to me. There is a sweetly picturesque delicacy to his music, but it is also robust and earthy. Orchard by LYRRE Lyrre is also promising us a new release in May, and they've released two singles ahead of the game. These are both very much in their excellent blend of metal and folk, recognizable largely by the vocals and hurdy-gurdy of Michalina Malisz. The band aptly backs her on guitars, bass, and drums. Both of the singles are driving and compelling, but I'm choosing “Orchard,” as my favourite of the two.

Hospice workers told me that music is a tremendous support for those who are dying, that they retain their sense of hearing longer than any other sense. Music is powerful medicine. Early Remains' “Weald” will give you an idea of the overall release. Svarvi by Songleikr Lovely Norwegian single, released just in time to herald not only the promise of longer days to come, but the advent of a new release, due early next year. Done in a traditional style, it depicts an endless dance between the masculine and feminine, balance and letting go. Bring on the full release! The Nightmare of Reason by Flight76 favorite track The Nightmare of Reason Much of this is music that has been resurrected and reworked by it's original composer from his band that existed in the 1970s, along with new tracks as well. This is superb progressive music with a tinge of the original era still permeating, yet without it’s overexcesses. The musicianship is superb, as well as the vocals, and the thoughtfulness of the lyrics all combine for a stunning “debut.” I'm presenting the epic opener as my favourite track, but all are worthy of your time. Tepid on my Trippin Heels by Naomi Randall favorite track The Devil’s Fountain Psych folk artist brings us original tunes in that style, plus 2 traditional tunes. Naomi has played all of the instruments on the recording, with the exception of some drums, and sings each in her delightfully dulcet voice. The lyrics are sometimes wry and often haunting. The Smile You Send Out Returns To You by CONSTANT FOLLOWER favorite track Happy Birthdays This Scottish ensemble brings pensively wistful folk songs. They utilize guitars bass, piano, and synths, with both male and female vocals. Guests supply more of the same, plus drums, harp, and mellotron. My favourite track is the achingly poignant Happy Birthdays. Shiraz by Dhafer Youssef favorite track Rose Fragrance Beautiful blend of jazz, chamber, and world music, in honour of the composer, singer, and oudist Dhafer Youssef's wife, Shiraz. As mentioned, he plays oud and sings in his signature style, and is accompanied by piano, trumpet, electric bass, drums, and electric guitar. This is simply gorgeous and everything you expect from this master of music. The Dream We Carry by The Revolutionary Army of The Infant Jesus favorite track Equinox More scintillating retro psych folk that passed me by somehow last year. This outfit from Liverpool consistently deliver exquisitely melancholic piece s, with lyrics offered up in several languages. Instrumentation is provided by keyboards, cello, percussion, and the achingly plaintive female vocals. This is golden. Harmr by Thurnin favorite track Mana Netherlands composer Jurre Timmer's latest release again turns to Icelandic inspiration, this time ruminating upon grief and sorrow (which are rough translations of the title). Impeccably played acoustic guitar is at the core of all of the pieces, with delicate embellishments of flute and some haunting, distant vocal parts. Galleon Ascending by The Prophets of Zarquon favorite track Pastoral The Prophets of Zarquon are back. Their particular version of psych folk shimmers with lysergic splendour, featuring the soaring vocals of the mononymous Roseanna. She's accompanied by Dr Rob Shroud on guitars, and Lord Zar on mellotron, keyboards, bass, and percussion. This is just a phantasmagoric vision.

In today's episode, we will begin Chapter 11 on Instrumentation by talking about the theory of Instrumentation. In order to properly interpret our Instrumentation findings, we must first know what we are looking for and what it means. This section will teach us how to do that.
Motors are the quiet workhorses of industry. They drive pumps, fans, compressors, and heaters, and they consume more than sixty percent of the power in most industrial operations. When operators need to control motor speed, they historically relied on mechanical adjustments or trial-and-error testing to keep processes stable and safe. As motors get larger and drive trains more complex, traditional testing approaches no longer work. Bringing every component together for a full string test adds months of delay and millions of dollars in logistics. The industry is conservative and reference driven, which makes it hard for operators to trust new configurations without seeing them proven first. This is where simulations shine. In this episode, I speak with Anand Jha, Vice President of Global Sales for ABB System Drive – Process Industries, about simulation twins that let operators model the entire system before it's built. These "virtual plants" replicate the grid, the drives, the motors, and the compressor. With software-in-loop and hardware-in-loop tools, operators can validate performance, tune configurations, and eliminate expensive string tests. The result is faster execution, lower cost, deeper system insight, better training, and continuous improvement across the plant lifecycle.

Patient-specific instrumentation (PSI) was developed to improve accuracy and efficiency in implant placement for total ankle arthroplasty (TAA). This study represents the first to measure the accuracy of PSI regarding implant alignment and implant size in the INBONE II total ankle system (Stryker). A secondary goal was to compare radiographic and clinical outcomes between the PSI and that of a matched group of implants performed with standard instrumentation. In conclusion, this study of stemmed TAA implants, surgeons achieved alignment generally consistent with PSI predictions. PSI adequately predicted implant size. This episode, University of Edinburgh PhD candidate Mia Belle Frothingham chats with Dr Frances Westall, leader of the Exobiology Group of the CNRS in Orléans (France). We talk about Frances's diverse and inspiring path, the dramatic and divisive period after a Martian meteorite found (ALH84001) in Antarctica in 1984, and the politic motivations behind false pretences of the discovery of extraterrestrial life.
We talk with Eric Mannix, Andy Oliver, and Ed DiFilippo about weather instruments, data gathering and more!Support the showSuggest a topic or ask a question: alex@wxguide.comVisit our conference site: www.hurricanecenterlive.comThanks for listening and please share with your friends and co-workers.

eBPF holds the potential for true automatic instrumentation for observability. OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation (OBI) is a new addition to the OpenTelemetry project, which brings the promise of a multi-language, multi-protocol auto-instrumentation, thanks to a code donation by Grafana Labs. Our guest today is Mario Macías, Principal Software Engineer at Grafana Labs and OpenTelemetry eBFP Instrument maintainer. Macías joins Horovits to share about OBI, its origins, capabilities and how it fits into the broader OpenTelemetry project. Mario holds a Ph.D. in Computer Architecture and for the last 8 years he's been working in observability at different companies. He also authored books in Spanish language, such as "Programación en Go" or "Introducción a Apache Spark". Note: This podcast interview was recorded before the CFS10 shake table tests, which took place in June and July of 2025.In this episode, earthquake engineers Tara Hutchinson, of UC San Diego, and Ben Schafer, of Johns Hopkins University, explain how they collect data from the CFS10 shake table tests. 750 sensors monitor the 10-story steel-framed structure as it is subjected to simulated earthquakes; sensors range from accelerometers to drones filming video. Partners in CFS10 instrumentation include the California Strong Motion Instrumentation program and CalTech, who installed valuable sensor systems on the structure. Hutchinson and Schafer discuss data from non-structural components, vital for understanding building re-occupation, and they cover important nuances – such as data from prior component testing, including hybrid simulations – which are necessary precursors to large-scale shake table testing – which validate earlier findings.Expect to hear initial findings from CFS10 testing in September 2025, when Hutchinson and Schafer will be presenting papers. Data from the CFS10 tests will be publicly available on the NHERI DesignSafe Data Depot within a year. Although it can take years for engineering research to be adopted into official building codes, Hutchinson and Schafer explain that engineers in the earthquake-prone state of California are quicker to adopt peer reviewed findings.

At "Beyond the Big Bang" 2025, Dr. Patrick Vanraes, a plasma scientist at the University of Antwerp, delivers two quiet revolts against the reigning cosmological order. In the first talk, he develops Dr. Pierre Marie Robitaille's vision of the Sun not as a chaotic gas ball, but as a layered, liquid structure—dense enough to host fusion through lattice confinement, where matter itself conspires in silence. Patrick takes Dr. Robitaille's model one step further, examining the possibility that diverse types of fusion may be occurring throughout different regions of the liquid plasma. In the second talk, Patrick takes aim at the cosmic origin of the microwave background, suggesting that what's been repeatedly called the echo of creation may instead be a local artifact—unmeasured where it matters most. Patrick doesn't reject mainstream physics—he asks physicists to look again, more carefully, and perhaps more honestly. The Q&A shows this is not the simple request it seems.PATREON https://www.patreon.com/c/demystifysciPARADIGM DRIFThttps://demystifysci.com/paradigm-drift-showMUSICCheck out our band's new album:https://secretaryofnature.bandcamp.com/album/everything-is-so-good-hereVinyl pre-orders available now: https://buy.stripe.com/14A5kC3Od5d21Ms7zPdEs0900:00 Go! How can modern telemetry solutions help you? While at NDC in Melbourne, Richard chatted with Liz Fong-Jones of Honeycomb about her approach to educating leadership on creating great telemetry solutions for organizations. Liz discusses the importance of being able to answer questions about reliability issues without causing problems, as opposed to relying on a dashboard for every measurement taken of the system. The conversation also delves into the culture of building reliability, where people are encouraged to fail and learn, rather than being punished when things go wrong.LinksHoneycombRecorded April 30, 2025
In this episode, we dive into a lively and at times heated discussion around the clinical challenges of non-specific low back pain. This isn't your typical clinical chat — expect strong opinions, sharp insights, and some friendly disagreement as we explore:Is non-specific low back pain even a real diagnosis? What impact does a diagnosis (or lack of one) have on our patients? The current state of research in low back pain — and where it's still falling shortDr Mark Laslett is a New Zealand Board Registered Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Specialist (NZRPS), based in Christchurch, New Zealand. “Keep it simple because the more complex things get, the less people will do it” - Gary Garcia For years, water treatment professionals have relied on PTSA tracers to estimate system performance, but emerging technologies are offering clearer, more direct answers. In this episode of Scaling UP! H2O, host Trace Blackmore welcome once again returning guest Garret "Gary" S. Garcia of Masters Company, now a business unit of MFG Chemical to explore how fluorescent tagged polymers are revolutionizing the way water treaters monitor system health and chemical performance. With decades of expertise, Gary offers practical insights into this game-changing technology. Why Tagged Polymers Matter Trace and Gary discuss the limitations of relying solely on PTSA tracers, a method that only indicates product presence rather than active ingredient performance. Gary explains how fluorescent tagged polymers, by chemically bonding the fluorophore to the polymer backbone, provide a direct and reliable measure of active polymer concentration, helping water treaters make more informed service decisions. Instrumentation and Integration Challenges Listeners will gain a practical understanding of how to implement tagged polymer technology. Gary outlines how existing probes and meters compare, what calibration and integration may look like, and whether both PTSA and tagged polymers can be used together. He also explains why tagged polymers are especially useful in systems impacted by iron, cationic biocides, or inconsistent load demands. Real-World Applications and Benefits Tagged polymers make it possible to move beyond "set-it-and-forget-it" dosing practices. Gary discusses how accurate polymer monitoring can reduce overfeeding, optimize chemical performance, and improve system health. For both QC in manufacturing and daily service checks, these tools offer better visibility into what's really happening inside the system. The Simplicity of Switching Gary highlights the ease of adopting tagged polymers – often a direct drop-in with no reformulation needed. For water treaters, that means minimal disruption and an immediate opportunity to upgrade their programs. Conclusion Fluorescent tagged polymers are not just another tool in the toolbox; they represent a critical step forward in water treatment precision and reliability. As Gary notes, understanding and adopting these technologies allows professionals to elevate their programs, save resources, and better serve their customers.
