Host William Hudson is joined by Professor Andrea McDonnell, Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of PC's Communication Program to discuss her new research. Dr. McDonnell has been a guest on this podcast previously to discuss the decline of local news and her 2023 book A Gossip Politic. In today's podcast she discusses her more recent work on what she calls "discursive self-cleaving," a rhetorical strategy celebrities employ to counter accusations of sexual misconduct. In a forthcoming book, she takes an in depth look at the way three celebrities have deployed this strategy to protect themselves from such accusations. Among the three is former president Donald Trump, a master of discursive self-cleaving, who will be the focus of our conversation. Our conversation shows how various developments in communications in the 21st century, a post-truth information eco-system, bullshitting, and public gaslighting, have enabled this strategy. We conclude with comments on how Trump has expanded discursive self-cleaving from being a response to allegations of sexual misconduct to a routine tool in campaign image making.
It's no secret that many people in the LGBTQ community have felt they had to keep their sexual orientation and gender identity hidden for years, partly because of discrimination, and partly because of internalized shame. Dive deep into three stories to understand the true cost of those secrets, psychologically, personally, societally — and the relief when they are revealed. We meet: Margo Anderson, a transgender woman and science writer in western Massachusetts who transitioned in her early 50s, after keeping her identity a secret even from herself. Bill Hudson, a gay man who grew up Catholic and later led a religious school in Minnesota, while hiding his same-sex relationship and children for years — until it all exploded in public. Dr. Abbie Goldberg, a psychology professor at Clark University who grew up in the 1980s with a single mom who was gay but never talked about it. She now researches secrets among LGBTQ and adoptive families. Tanisha Arena and Nicole Young Martin, two queer Black women and community leaders who talk about confronting society's prejudices and refusing to live in secrecy — albeit at a cost. The Secrets We Keep is written/produced/hosted by Karen Brown, edited by Sam Hudzik, with music by Katie Semro. Find out more at nepm.org/secrets.
Although most of us associate the People's Republic of China (the PRC) with its officially sanctioned atheism, the government tolerates a variety of religious practice within the country. Regulating and controlling religious practice to assure that it does not pose a threat to the dominance of either the Chinese state or the ruling Chinese Communist Party is an on-going challenge to both party and state. Professor Susan McCarthy, the PC political science department's China expert and a leading authority on ethnic and religious minorities in China, has returned to Beyond Your News Feed to discuss recent developments in the PRC's efforts to regulate religious practice. Our discussion centers around two of Dr. McCarthy's recent papers on the topic: “Liberating Party Animals: Cultural Governance and ‘Life Release' Rituals in China” published in July 2022 in The China Journal and a yet unpublished paper: “Sinicizing China's World Muslim City: Spatial Politics, National Narratives, and Ethno-Religious Assimilation in the PRC”.

Professor Adam Myers joins host William Hudson to discuss federalism's impact on American democracy. Jacob M. Grumbach's recent book: Laboratories against Democracy: How National Parties Transformed State Politics offers the touchstone for this discussion. Grumbach addresses a perennial issue in the analysis of American politics – whether the federal system advances or undermines democratic values. Our discussion examines and critiques Grumbach's thesis as well as looking at recent arguments claiming federalism can advance progressive values.

This episode features a conversation with the Providence College Political Science Department's Chinese politics expert, Professor Susan McCarthy. For several months, now, China has been in the news a lot whether in reports on the Chinese regime's response to COVID, authoritarian crackdowns on political dissidents and ethnic minorities, the recent Party Congress that extended President Xi's term in office, worsening tension, both diplomatic and military, between the US and China, and, finally, the infamous Chinese balloon caper. Our conversation brings Professor McCarthy expertise to bear on media coverage of these issues.

Another mind bending podcast. First an apology for talking over Jennifer; because I knew I didn't have her for long, I wanted to squeeze in as much information as I could. The first half I interrupt her often, the second half not so much. Yes, I did a Laverne & Shirley, I played "Guide the Pizza Delivery guy" - an idea that Charles Grodin had, that he pitched to Penny. They wrote me in and as noted, they cut me out. It's just fun that I did the show, and that Harry Dean Stanton sang a song (which went over, and is why I was cut out, according to Penny.) I did spend the millennium on a yacht with Bob Shaye, Penny Marshall and others - and I played the piano while Penny sang shows tunes from "Hello Dolly" but with Bob and Ava Shaye's names instead. And for those familiar with our books with transcripts of eight years of meeting weekly - "Backstage Pass to the Flipside 1, 2 and 3" or "Tuning into the Afterlife" - they'll know that Jennifer doesn't recall our conversations unless folks on the flipside remind her. We did interview Gary Marshall when he crossed over, we have interviewed others mentioned in the podcast, Robin Williams, Sally Kellerman... Luana Anders is our moderator on the podcast, she did over 300 TV episodes and films, knew everyone - and those in turn know others. We've had many stop by the podcast - not because they're "celebrities" - there's no hierarchy on the flipside, but because Luana knew them. (Luana reached out from the flipside to get me to do a documentary about this research.) I was at Penny's birthday party when I met Robin Williams. Luana introduced me to Fred Roos, introduced me to Francis Coppola who introduced me to George Lucas (I beat them both playing "Risk"). Rance Howard starred in my film "Limit Up" so I know Ron, as well as his mom. I don't know Bill Hudson, but I do know his ex Goldie. Apologies to her children for dropping their names in this podcast - I try not to offend grieving family members, but sometimes it's healing or helpful to hear or see how easy it is to access our loved ones. We do this podcast for that reason - to demonstrate one doesn't need a medium (it helps) doesn't need a hypnotherapist (it can help) but one can just do a simple meditation (example in DivineCouncils.com or the film HackingTheAfterlifeFilm.com ) to chat with anyone. Or give Jennifer a call. She's really good at what she does. As Harry Dean Stanton told us (transcript is in "Backstage Pass to the Flipside") "tell people to allow for the possibility there is an afterlife so then they won't waste another minute of their life arguing about it like I did." I mention David Kirkpatrick in the podcast, as he wrote a wonderful memory of Cindy on his Facebook page. Some may think I'm directing Jennifer in these questions - but since we've been doing this for eight years, I'm not trying to prove anything to anyone - for me that's a waste of time and energy when she's done that so many times already. Plus she works with law enforcement daily pro bono. I'm not the only one who knows how talented she is (JenniferShaffer.com) I don't know if Ron or George or Fred will ever see this podcast, but they're specifically mentioned in here. Our loved ones are NOT GONE. THEY'RE JUST NOT HERE. The data, research, footage from UVA Medical school DOPS demonstrates consciousness is not confined to the brain. It's not my opinion, theory or belief that people say the same things about the afterlife using hypnotherapy, meditation or in this case mediumship - it's footage. Examples are in flipsidemyfilm.com, "Talking to Bill Paxton" on Gaia, or HackingTheAfterlifeFilm.com . And to Bill Hudson - whom I don't know - Cindy says "you can have it." She says you'll know what that means. We hope so.
Podcast host, William Hudson, invites back to the podcast the Providence College Political Science Departments expert on all this Israeli, Professor Ruth Ben-Artzi, to discuss recent events in Israel and Palestine. Our wide ranging conversation covers the electoral turmoil of the past four years that produced four elections, the reemergence of Benyamin Netanyahu as Prime Minister after last November's election, the extreme right-wing character of the government he heads, and the impact of all of this on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Robbie-Ann wonders about a Steinbeck influence on their characters. Carmine - Shirley's 'sweetheart.' Character analysis: Shirley Feeney. Were you Shirley or Laverne? Boo-Boo Kitty - Cindy Williams' ad lib. The origins of the famous nonsense hop-scotch intro "5, 6, 7 8..." Some ocean-floor level deeeep-dive trivia on the iconic theme song sung by Cyndi Greco, and its connections to the Happy Days theme song. How producers discovered Cyndi Greco singing at an amusement park. Sidebar: go find the documentary The Wrecking Crew about the famous musicians who played on pretty much EVERYTHING between 1960 and 1980. The Ron Hicklin Singers: the surprising "Making Our Dreams Come True" theme connection with The Partridge Family, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Kawasaki and McDonald's jingles, and a long list of 60s and 70s hits. Robbie-Ann reports the 'WHAAAT?!" connection with the "Making Our Dreams Come True" song and...."We Are the World?!" Character breakdown: Laverne DeFazio. When Mrs. Babish married Laverne's father Frank, but leaves him in the lurch in later episodes. Robbie-Ann's issue with sitcoms that got serious: just be funny please. Sidebar: Seinfeld's wise 'no hugs' policy on the sitcom. Amy liked those episodes though, because it was unexpected. The 80s hair and wardrobe of the later seasons, even though it was supposed to be late 60s. The lost season 5 when Laverne and Shirley joined the Army Reserves. The show's great use of the street-level window as a comedy device. How Cindy Williams and Penny Marshall initially got on the show, and their connection to...Francis Ford Coppola? Penny Marshall's marriage to Rob Reiner, and Cindy Williams' marriage to Bill Hudson of the Hudson Brothers. The infamous terms 'Vo-di-oh-do-do' and 'hot to trot.' The 're-virginization' of Laverne and Shirley. Rumors of off-camera antics: partying? Diva behavior? Drugs? The effects of the show's success on egos and the work environment. The cozy first seasons and the focus on the characters' friendship. Didn't every little girl think she would grow up to live with her best friend?
This episode features our knowledgeable and insightful team of American politics experts, Professor Adam Myers and Professor Matt Guardino to discuss the state of American politics this summer of 2022. The last few weeks have produced a variety of interesting topics for us to talk about – all with implications for the upcoming midterm national elections this fall. Most directly, states across the nation have been holding primaries to select candidates for the fall elections, including candidates for Congress and for state offices. In recent weeks, the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol has held several news making and fascinating public hearings. And if that were not enough, as its term ended, the US Supreme Court released several blockbuster decisions on guns, abortion, environmental regulation, and public prayer reflecting the muscle and ambition of the Courts solid conservative majority. Matt, Adam and podcast host, Bill Hudson, ruminate about these topics and their implications for American democracy.

Bill's professional expertise spans a gamut of projects that consist of network series, animation, music videos, reality series, commercials, feature films and independent movies. His credits include Fosse/Verdon, The Good Fight (CBS), Dickinson (Apple TV+), Billions (Showtime), Ballers (HBO), P-Valley (STARZ), Naomi (CW), Betty (HBO), the MTV reality series Catfish and Netflix's Peabody award-winning animated short, Cops and Robbers. When Bill was looking for a way to get out of the city in which he was born and raised, around the time he was about to graduate from high school, a love of video games and an encounter at a college fair booth focused his interest more on entertainment as a viable and interesting educational and career path. We get to talk about what it was like for Bill once he moved to California, the various disciplines of animation, his early gigs, what they taught him and the whole 'who you know' maxim when it comes to trying to find your footing when starting out in the entertainment industry. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/postinblack/support

The events in Birmingham brought national attention as the news media sent journalists and photographers to document them. Among the photographers present, Charles Moore of Life magazine and Bill Hudson of The New York Times famously photographed the events of May 3 and 4 and published the photos in their respective publications. These images of young black people brutalized by white police caused international embarrassment for the United States and its government. In the midst of the Cold War, the federal government wanted to be seen as promoting freedom and not sanctioning The negative media attention prompted Pres. Kennedy to take action. On May 3, 1963, he sent Assistant Attorney General Burke Marshall to negotiate with the ACMHR-SCLC to end the demonstrations. Over the next few days, Marshall convinced King and Ralph Abernathy to compromise with Birmingham city leaders and businessmen over the alacrity with which city accommodations and businesses would be forced to desegregate. Although the Birmingham Manifesto had called for the immediate desegregation of public spaces and private businesses, King and Abernathy agreed to allow Birmingham a short time delay to fulfill their demands. Shuttlesworth, who had been injured during the Crusade, was unable to attend the negotiation and give his input. King and Abernathy's compromise would cause a rift between King and Shuttlesworth, who believed that King had used his "local" civil rights effort to gain national recognition. The Children's Crusade stands as one of the civil rights movement's more brutal events. The violence, however, achieved the goal of raising national attention and pushing the Kennedy Administration to minimize its international embarrassment by sending agents to work towards desegregating Birmingham. On June 11, 1963, Pres. Kennedy called for a civil rights bill to prohibit racial discrimination and eliminate segregation in schools, employment, and public areas.
