On Wednesday, the Albanese government announced the biggest reforms to Australia's visa system in more than a decade. The government crackdown will see $50 million spent on tougher compliance and permanent investigation teams in a bid to stamp out criminal exploitation of the migration industry.  The new measures are part of the government's formal response to a report by former police commissioner Christine Nixon into the exploitation of the visa system.  Will the crackdown end the criminal activity rife in our visa system? Is former Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton to blame for all of these problems, as the government claims? And what will the government do about migration more generally, what is the right balance and who gets to decide?  Plus we will check in on the voice campaign which has only one week left to run.  Chief political correspondent David Crowe and economic policy director at the Grattan Institute, Brendan Coates join Jacqueline Maley on Inside Politics. All refugees have a pathway to the "full rights of New Zealand citizens" and if Australia wants to stop them returning across the Tasman that is "their decision", Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi says. His comments come after news Australia had recently approached New Zealand to take up the longstanding offer to resettle 150 refugees a year who have been rejected by the federal Australian government because they attempted to arrive by boat.Speaking to Australian media, Australia Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews said in securing any deal she had made it "very clear" to New Zealand there wouldn't be a "backdoor method" for refugees to be able to return to Australia. The offer, first made under John Key's Government in 2013, has been repeatedly rejected from politicians across the Tasman, largely around concerns New Zealand would become a "backdoor route" to Australia due to travel arrangements between the countries. This led to Australia seeking a deal with the United States, which agreed to accept 1250 refugees. So far 940 people have been resettled there, while another 258 refugees have been provisionally approved for resettlement but await travel. On Wednesday, Andrews told The Age she had started talks with her New Zealand counterpart about accepting the offer. However, she said she had made it "very clear" to New Zealand there wouldn't be a backdoor method for refugees to be able to return to Australia."We're working through those issues now and we will continue to do so, and of course we will continue to work with the United States about resettlement options there as well," Andrews told The Age.Faafoi said he'd been approached by former Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton "early this year or late last year" about taking up the offer, and again by Andrews, who took over the role in April, just last week."The offer has been there since 2013. It is still open, but there are still details that need to be worked through and bottom lines in that," Faafoi said. One of those "bottom lines" was ensuring it went through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees process, Faafoi said, which guaranteed a pathway to full citizenship and all the rights that entailed."If they come to New Zealand it will be under the auspices of the UN programme, eventually becoming citizens. We would want them to have the full rights of New Zealand citizens."Refugees who arrive in New Zealand under the Refugee Quota Programme are granted Permanent Residence status in New Zealand, meaning they would still need to acquire a visa to travel to Australia. Most New Zealand citizens can visit, live and work in Australia without applying for a tourist or work visa, however.Asked about Australia concerns of New Zealand becoming a "backdoor", Faafoi said that was "their issue"."Any intention Australia has in that is their decision. We have made it pretty clear on a number of occasions, if they come here, they will eventually become New Zealand citizens, and we would like them to have the full rights of New Zealand citizens."Faafoi said New Zealand had capacity for the extra 150 refugees, which would be on top of New Zealand's current annual quota of 1500.However, due to Covid-19 the quota had been greatly reduced. After pausing for much of the pandemic it recently resumed at a reduced level, with 750 to 1000 individuals to be resettled over 2021/2022.Faafoi denied any deal was about giving New Zealand any sort of human rights PR boost."There are some fundamental rights here, the lives of those on PNG and Nauru are not ideal. There have been offers from two different governments, open for some time."Officials between the two countries would be meeting this month to discuss further details, Faafoi said.text by Michael Neilson, NZ Herald

Australia has added insult to injury - with a senior government minister describing New Zealanders being deported here as "trash". Australian television network 9 News was given extraordinary access by Australia's Border Force to 501 deportees as they boarded a chartered flight to New Zealand. The story also included comments from Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton who said it was Australia's way of "taking out the trash". Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern kept a diplomatic tone on the matter - but some of her other ministers got fired up, one so much so he put his foot in it. Political reporter Yvette McCullough has the story.

A Nine News TV segment has caused uproar in New Zealand, where locals have slammed it as “extraordinarily grotesque”, “incendiary” and “upsetting”.On Monday, the network aired an exclusive report by Nine News Queensland reporter Jordan Fabris, who was given special access by the Australian Border Force to go on board the “secret prisoner plane” being used to deport Kiwis convicted of crimes.“Taking out the trash,” the host said as she introduced the segment.“Tonight, we're revealing the secret prisoner plane booting foreign criminals out of Australia. From murderers to child abusers, these people have no place in our country.”The report also featured Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton describing the flights as “taking the trash out”.“We're talking about the most serious offenders here, and our country is safer for having deported them,” Mr Dutton told the program.“Over the course of the last 12 months or so Border Force has been able to deport over 700 people. It's taking the trash out, then we can make Australia a safer place.”The program showed a number of notorious criminals being loaded onto the unmarked Airbus jet, including Grant David Mitchell, who choked his girlfriend Nella Poli to death in the 1980s and remained a fugitive for nearly 24 years. Also featured were killer conman Edwin Lewis, crazed Geelong car chase gunman Bruce Savage, bikie drug runner Gavin Lou Boynton-Taiawa, sex offender Jamie Roy McKeay, and in Perth, “two criminals whose identities are classified”.At one point in the segment, Fabris thrusts a microphone at a handcuffed woman as she's led across the tarmac. “How does it feel to be kicked out of Australia?” he asks. After the woman tells him to “f**k off”, Fabris says, “Our country doesn't want you, are you excited to go home?”The issue of criminal deportations, which were briefly suspended last year during the COVID-19 pandemic, has festered as one of the most contentious diplomatic issues between the two countries.A surge in gang crime following the return of hundreds of former prisoners has made headlines in New Zealand, where Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has slammed the policy as having a “corrosive” effect on trans-Tasman relations. In an article about the Nine News report, the NZ Herald's headline quoted one reaction describing it as “upsetting”, and the article itself labelled Mr Dutton's “trash” comment as “incendiary”.The newspaper noted criticism of the deportation policy, which has seen New Zealanders who had spent their life in Australia deported after committing minor offences.Four people have died in connection with the policy, including a man who committed suicide 18 months after being deported, according to a “Border Deaths Database” maintained by Monash University. The NZ Herald quoted a woman who works with deportees in New Zealand, who said the report did not accurately reflect the reality of the policy or the ratio of Kiwis being deported for relatively minor charges.Aimee Reardon from Prisoners' Aid and Rehabilitation Society said Mr Dutton's comments were “ignorant” and that he was “ill-informed”.She also said racism played a part in how the policy was enforced and that there were “ulterior motives” involved.“She said his comments would hit hard for returnees, many of whom already needed counselling to ‘see themselves as people' again,” the NZ Herald wrote.“She said she has spoken to one returnee was ‘really upset' after seeing the report and concerned that his family in Australia might see it and it might affect the perceptions of people in his new community.”In an opinion piece for the Stuff.co.nz website, journalist Andrea Vance suggested Prime Minister Scott Morrison was engaging in “a touch of Kiwi bashing” to distract from his government's scandals.“It's easy to tell when Scott Morrison is feeling under pressure – he picks a fight with New Zealand,” Vance wrote.“The Australian Prime Minister's Liberal party is marred by a succession of explos...

Murray Olds: Australian government reacts furiously to Facebook news ban

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has revealed the Australian government “weren't given any notice by Facebook” ahead of its bombshell news ban.Fronting the media on Thursday afternoon just hours after the ban on Australian news content, the Treasurer expressed his anger at the move.“Facebook was wrong. Facebook's actions were unnecessary, they were heavy-handed, and they will damage its reputation here in Australia,” he said.“Their decision to block Australians' access to government sites – be they about support through the pandemic, mental health, emergency services, the Bureau of Meteorology – were completely unrelated to the media code which is yet to pass through the Senate. “But what today's events do confirm for all Australians is the immense market power of these media digital giants. These digital giants loom very, very large in our economy and on the digital landscape.“The Morrison Government remains absolutely committed to legislating and implementing the code.”The stunning decision was made in retaliation to Australia's proposed new Media Bargaining law, with the federal government pushing forward with a plan to force social media giants to pay for news content. But despite Facebook's drastic move, Mr Frydenberg said the government was sticking to its guns.“This digital code, this new media bargaining code, is very important micro-economic reform. It's one that was initiated by the Prime Minister when he was then treasurer,” he said.“So, we will look at their actions today. We'll hear from them in the coming days. And we'll see if we can find a pathway forward. But the Morrison Government's position is very clear. “We will legislate this code. We want the digital giants paying traditional news media businesses for generating original journalistic content. This is critical to sustaining public interest journalism in this country, and this is world-leading.”Communications Minister Paul Fletcher also criticised Facebook's stance.“We have been very clear all the way along that we certainly want Google and Facebook to stay in Australia, continue to be important parts of the digital economy here, but at the same time if you're doing business in Australia you need to comply with the laws made by the elected Australian Parliament,” he said.“We welcome … reports of agreements reached between Google and three Australian news media businesses, and the fact that, as we understand it, there are other discussions occurring. “And I certainly endorse what the Treasurer has said about this very unfortunate decision by Facebook. What they're effectively saying to Australians is, ‘You will not find content on our platform which comes from an organisation which employs professional journalists, which has editorial policies, which has fact-checking processes'.”Mr Fletcher said it was a “surprising decision” and one that was “unlikely to be in the long term interest of their brand”.“And, of course, the community impact of this is very significant,” he added.“The fact that there are organisations like state health departments, fire and emergency services and so on who have had their Facebook pages blocked – that's a public safety issue. “I've spoken to Facebook this morning and said the Government expects them to restore those pages as quickly as possible. There is great responsibility that comes with being a platform that, as the digital platforms inquiry said, that has over 17 million Australians visit it every month.”Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has claimed that while Facebook's “arrogance” over the Australian news ban is shocking, another move in the pipeline by the tech giant could have even more devastating consequences.“Facebook's arrogance isn't restricted to their decision to ban Australian news,” he tweeted today.“Their push for end-to-end encryption will make it easier for paedophiles to share child sexual exploitation material. @MissingKids estimates reporting of child sexual abuse will decre...

New legislation for Australian Federal Police tabled in parliament AFP's 'expansion of authoritarian powers'Govt urged to avoid TOLA repeat with dark web lawsLast week, Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton introduced the Surveillance Legislation Amendment (Identify and Disrupt) Bill 2020 into the federal parliament. The bill gives the AFP broad new surveillance powers, to take over the online accounts of Australians, and devices at the network levelCurrently, law enforcement can only take control of a person's account with their consent. These proposed laws would allow the AFP to take over an account without consent, as long as they had a warrantWhile the new laws are designed to target child abuse and terrorism, the new warrants will also apply to Commonwealth crimes including theft, fraud, tax evasion, illegal gambling, forgery and piracy. With just four sitting days left, the Law Council of Australia has urged the government not to repeat what it did with the country's encryption-busting laws by similarly trying to rush through new online account takeover powers before Christmas, but the timing cannot be ignored here. And as we've reported, both the government encryption laws and mandatory data retention laws have been criticised since their introduction, as being too broad, and accessible by far too many agencies. This week when the government is attacking the mainstream media and YouTube is attacking right-wing media the Uncuckables take their chance with another weekly YouTube livestream with Tim Wilms Editor in Chief of The Unshackled, David Hiscox Editor of The XYZ and freshly banned from his own YouTube channel Australian Meditations. We comment that it's ironic that the mainstream media after being raided are now concerned about a police state after they have advocated for one to crackdown on "far-right extremists". We comment on YouTube's new hardline police against "extremism" and "white supremacy" which also saw Australian patriot Shermon Burgess banned from the platform, after he was banned from Facebook earlier in the week. We analyze the Darwin mass shooting and how it proves wrong the hypothesis that mass shootings don't happen in Australia because of gun control of law abiding citizens. The shooter was a recently paroled man who obtained the gun illegally. We reflect on the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre during which Chinese warships arrived in Sydney Harbour and there was a hack attack on our major institutions. We debate whether democracy arriving in China in 1989 would change the threat posed by the nation today. We look at the latest political matchup with Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton now having as his opposite Kristina Kerscher Keneally (KKK) who once described boat turnbacks as immoral and is a perennial political loser. We give our thoughts on Indigenous NRL players choosing to not sing the National Anthem during the State of Origin. Their only demand apparently is changing the words "young and free" to "strong and free" but that's how it starts. We provide an update Blair Cottrell's appeal against his conviction for “intent to incite ridicule or contempt of Muslims” under Victoria's Racial and Religious Tolerance Act. We discuss Lauren Southern's retirement from alternative media and the phenomena of attractive young girls drawn to the alt-lite and alt-right. We comment on Samraat Joshua Grewal and Joel Jammal's take over of Fred Nile's Christian Democratic Party and what this means for Australian conservatism and nationalism. We finish by looking at Donald Trump's official state visit to the UK where he hasn't been afraid to put his views forward on British Politics and the Royal Family. He was in Europe to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the WWII D-Day landing. It's a Friday night so joining me again in what we are aiming to turn into a regular relaxed weekly live show is Ben Shand the Dusty Bogan. We begin with a Queensland federal election debrief which helped deliver Scott Morrison his election victory with the state voting to support jobs in the state. The Queensland state Labor government as a result is fast tracking the approval of the Adani coal mine in Central Queensland. We turn our attention the transmania that is being forced upon the western world with Gillette releasing another virtue signalling advertisement featuring a transman shaving, we have another children's drag story-time under the Liberal South Australian Government and transwomen dominating women's sports. The first test of Australia's border security post-election occurred with a boat carrying 20 Sri Lankan asylum seekers was turned back by newly re-elected Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton. It gave us a glimpse of an alternate reality if Labor had won the election. We have seen anthem boycott campaign return to Australia with two Indigenous NRL players stating they will not sign Australia's national anthem during the State of Origin series. We both agree this will do nothing to help Indigenous disadvantage. We discuss the battle to end abortion which has had victories in the US state of Georgia however media giants are threatening a boycott of the state. There is also an effort to blacklist the pro-life film Unplanned from being screen in major cinemas worldwide. Other films that our audience should make the time to see is Lauren Southern's Borderless on the European migrant crisis which is available for free online. Then there is the Censored Movie which you can purchase off Vimeo about social media deplatforming of right-wing media personalities. Alex Whisson caught up with Felicity to discuss Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton’s proposed expansion of domestic intelligence gathering powers. Felicity began by addressing the question of the Australian Signals Directorate, the highly secretive government agency, which has historically gathered intelligence overseas.
