New Politics: Australian Politics
Media Diversity, Broken Promises and the Return of the Ruby Princess

New Politics: Australian Politics

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 14, 2022 47:10

There have been calls for a parliamentary inquiry into media diversity in Australia, and generally, the behaviour of the mainstream media – and these calls have been made for about 20 years or so. The independent member for Goldstein, Zoe Daniel – and she used to work as a journalist before entering parliament – she currently has a motion in parliament, and that was introduced in early September, with secondary debates in the final week of the last parliamentary session about whether an inquiry should be held.Australia does have one of the most concentrated media landscapes in the world, dominated by two companies – News Limited and Nine Media – there's also issues with the Australian Press Council, and that's funded by the mainstream media, and that's the place where you can lodge a complaint about the media, and it's pretty much close to useless, – and generally, the mainstream media in Australia tends to be supportive of conservative political interests. And if you're not of a conservative persuasion, that's not good news. We'd highly recommend an inquiry into the media in Australia, and you'd expect that this is something that a Labor government would be supportive of, considering they're usually on the end of most of the attacks from the media, whether they're in government or Opposition – so what are they waiting for?21 min 36 ¬– The Art of the Broken PromisePoliticians make a lot of promises, but it's the broken promises that everyone tends to remember. Back in 1996, the former Prime Minister John Howard introduced the idea of core and non-core promises into the political vernacular, and that was after he broke some key election promises after finding out that he couldn't keep them, and the media at that time seemed to accept this idea. There's been a lot of focus of Stage 3 tax cuts and broken promises – and the media has made it very clear to the public that this will be a big breach of public trust if Labor does repeal the tax cuts, while at the same time, it seems to be pushing them to break this promise well – but there are other areas where the Labor government is pushing the boundaries on what they promised or what they discussed in the last federal election campaign. There are a few issues of broken trust up for debate – Labor promised to deliver an anti-corruption commission with teeth, but there's now a few sticking points about transparency and public hearings; Labor also took the previous Coalition government to task about the secrecy of the National Cabinet – while they didn't promise to release National Cabinet documents, they've closed down debate about making these documents public. And they've also removed COVID isolation requirements, without releasing the medical evidence from the chief health officer to support this decision – and that's one area that they also criticised the previous Coalition government on – and it seems that they're now doing exactly the same. All political leaders and all governments are going to caught out on these issues, so why do they keep making the promises they can't keep, and sometimes keep the promises that they should be getting rid of, such as the Stage 3 tax cuts?36 min 36 – The Return of the Ruby PrincessThe class action trial against Carnival PLC has commenced in Sydney, and that's over the Ruby Princess incident in March 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic, where 663 Australia were infected with COVID, and 28 of those passengers died – and the arguments for the plaintiff are that the entire incident wasn't an accident and the ship should never have sailed at all. There was a special commission of inquiry into the Ruby Princess, and that report was completed in August 2020, but it was a whitewash of a report, and couldn't hold anyone responsible for the incident, but hopefully this class action trial will shine some more light on these events.41 min 40 – The PollsAnd there was also a Resolve Poll that came out during the week – and again, not much difference in the polling from the previous month – Labor has 58% in two-party preferred voting, which means the Coalition is polling at 42% – Albanese is still preferred Prime Minister by 53% to Dutton's 18%, and the net approval rating is 36 points for Albanese, and Dutton's is minus 10 points. And we have to remember that Albanese has similar figures to Dutton's at the same point in his leadership against Scott Morrison – today, Albanese is the Prime Minister, and Morrison isn't – so there is a little ray of hope for Peter Dutton. But the interesting issue about this poll is that all key indicators – and that's economic management, health care, aged care, and education – Labor is way ahead of the Coalition – and it's even on national security and defence – and economic management and national security and defence are seen more as the issues that are owned by conservative parties – so even though there are issues for the Labor Party, and a lot of pressure piled on by the media and the Opposition, there's a perception in the electorate that they're actually doing well – and that of course can change quickly, and might change very quickly after the October Budget is released – but these polls are good for Anthony Albanese, and not so good for Peter Dutton, as they have been ever since he became the Leader of the Opposition.

This major 7NEWS investigation examines the critical errors and cover-ups in the deepening Ruby Princess coronavirus crisis, to date responsible for seven deaths and 10 percent of all COVID-19 cases in Australia.Featuring interviews with key players at the centre of the developing scandal and passengers aboard the fateful cruise, 7NEWS reveals damning new information in documents obtained from the highest echelons of government detailing the truth of what the boarding passengers of the Ruby Princess unwittingly walked into, and those who knew about it.It was a cruise that should have been cancelled. When 2,700 holidaymakers boarded the Ruby Princess on March 8 for a round-tour of New Zealand, what they didn't know was they were walking on to a floating petri dish that, hours before they'd stepped aboard, sick passengers from the previous tour had disembarked.By the time the ship returned to Sydney in the early hours on March 19, the COVID-19 virus had spread rapidly through the ship. Yet all passengers were granted permission to come ashore and use any means of travel to return to their homes both in Australia and in many cases, overseas – no warnings of the dangers they faced, the peril on board, and the danger they now posed to the wider community.7NEWS investigative reporter Denham Hitchcock presents this explosive investigation into how the Ruby Princess became a breeding ground for the largest cluster of COVID-19 in the country, now spread to every state and territory – and other parts of the world. This special originally aired April 5, 2020. Episode 52: Morrison & Glady's rolling COVID disaster, Corporates trying to use the pandemic to cut job security as workers fight back and the good news is roads that charge electric cars

Van Badham and Ben Davison examine the rolling disaster that is Morrison and Glady's handeling of the COVID pandemic as NSW records a record 919 new cases and two hospitals, Blacktown and Westmead, are unable to take any more COVID patients.  The Ruby Princess inquiry finds the Morrison government didn't learn from mistakes overseas and let 600 COVID infected people out into community.  This as the UK and unvaccinated in the USA start to die and overwhelm hospitals in record numbers and Morrison tries to convice the nation that we too must "open up".  Van and Ben discuss how this feels like a political tactic and that Australian's aren't prepared to pay for community sport with the blood of our communities children. The workers at Graincorp and Toll are taking industrial action as both companies, hugely profitable, try to use the cover of the pandemic to cut job security and drive down wages.  Australian Unions have launched a national job security campaign as more and more companies are trying to further increase casualisation and outsourcing.  Van and Ben discuss how conservative governments in Germany and even Canada work with workers, in union, to improve job security while the Morrison government has, just this week, proudly taken the lid off the pool of more easily exploitable, temporary migrant workers.  The good news is that the roads we drive on will soon be able to charge the cars we will soon be driving as companies start making roads in the USA, Italy and Sweden that charge electic vehicles.

Australia could have been close to reaching herd immunity but a poor Australian government decision to turn its back on an excellent Pfizer deal means the national level of vaccination is at 3%, one of the lowest rates in the world. The anger in the medical community is palpable, but will the electorate blame the government for this error? And, for a government that was so keen to open up the economy as soon as possible, this foolishness is difficult to understand. The mainstream media wanted to position Scott Morrison as a key member of the G7 meeting, but he was anything but: Australia is not a member of the G7, it only had observer status at this meeting and it seems the US President, Joe Biden, was keen to let Morrison know about this. It was a ‘much ado about nothing' kind of meeting for Morrison, he signed a few long-term agreements which are not worth the pen and paper they were created with, and a free trade agreement with the UK – which will negotiated over the next 15 years. And a sideshow to explore his personal ancestry, a visit to a church, and drinks all round for his personal staff at a few drinking holes in Cornwall. Something had to be retrieved from the G7 meeting and this provided for excellent photo opportunities. The legal dispute between NSW National Leader, John Barilaro, and Jordan Shanks-Markovina (aka Friendly Jordies) has been ramped up and Barilaro has used anti-terrorism legislation to arrest the Friendly Jordies producer, Kristo Langker, all because he made a little bit of fun about him and exposed him for corruption. It's so ‘New South Wales' for a politician to want to lock up a journalist who gets in the way – but this is not just a battle between a politician and a journalist, it's a battle between legacy media and new media.Australia has a new Deputy Prime Minister, same as the old one: come on down, Barnaby Joyce, alleged sexual harasser of women, philanderer, drunk, morally bankrupt and possibly corrupt. Only in Australia (and Britain, US, Brazil, Hungary, Belarus) would the public accept this kind of politician as a leader. A retail politician who tells the electorate what they want to hear, not what needs to be done – the worst and most dangerous kind of politician. And it's also so ‘New South Wales' for the corruption of a Premier to be overlooked with soft media pampering and delicately placed stories about her new love life – who just happens to be the lawyer who represented her at the ICAC. COVID-19 cases are rising in Sydney and the NSW Government, far from the ‘gold standard' we keep hearing about, has allowed complacency to set it and has mismanaged key aspects of this pandemic. Will it be as bad as the Ruby Princess disaster in 2020? But let's not worry about that, all should be fine, because ‘Gladys is in love'.

Should have done this years ago. But don't tell Pearl I said that because she's been on at me for ages to do a cruise. I kept telling her I didn't want to be stuck on a floating hotel with a bunch of strangers. I'd rather spend our holidays towing a caravan around Australia, where I know the score. The Cruise Ship is a short story from the Tall And True writers’ website, written and narrated by Robert Fairhead. At the end of the episode, Robert provides an insight into the story, which he wrote for Furious Fiction in September 2020.The show notes include links to The Cruise Ship on Tall And True and the podcast's theme music and sound effects.Support the podcast: supporter.acast.com/tall-and-true-short-readsWriter's Insight into The Cruise ShipI wrote The Cruise Ship in September 2020 for Furious Fiction, a monthly 500-word short story competition run by the Australian Writers' Centre. September’s brief was:• The story had to be inspired by the photo of a ship deck• Begin with the letters SHO• And include the words SCORE, SLICE, SPRINKLE, STAMP and SWITCH.The ship deck photo had me thinking of cruise ships, and that led me to write another COVID inspired story, based loosely on the Ruby Princess debacle in Sydney, in March 2020. I know someone who travelled on that cruise with his wife. And while thankfully neither of them got sick, his Facebook photos of the Captain’s farewell party made it look like a germ factory, even without coronavirus! The letters SHO gave me the first word SHOULD, as in, “Should have done this years ago.” As for the other words, did you hear them in the story? Each is mentioned once and in the order, SCORE, SLICE, SPRINKLE, STAMP and SWITCH.The 55-hour submission deadline for the #FuriousFiction competition ends at midnight on the first Sunday of the month. Although I had a fair idea of what I wanted to write, thanks to the usual weekend duties and distractions, and inevitable short story edits, I submitted my September entry with only one last furious minute left on the clock!I hope you enjoyed this short journey with The Cruise Ship. It's been a torrid year for travel and tourism in Australia. This week, Gary and Hannah chat with Simon Westaway, Executive Director of the Australian Tourism Industry Council. In a candid and insightful interview, Simon discusses a broad sweep of inbound, outbound and domestic travel issues. From the 'Black Summer' bushfire season, Australia quickly encountered COVID-19 with the first infection in late January. The show addresses Australia's key 2020 developments, including the Ruby Princess, border bans, hotel quarantine outbreaks, state border politics and domestic travel in the summer season. With national borders closed until at least March 2021, we look ahead to the vaccine rollout, potential travel bubbles and selected cohorts that might feature in a phased recovery. Key markets, such as China, New Zealand and South East Asia, also merit a mention. Australians are famously adventurous travellers, and Simon also looks to some high-priority destinations once they are able to take overseas trips again.

Victoria's descent into a new wave of infections, which has recorded more than 300 deaths and 16,700 confirmed cases, started amid a scandal over quarantine and security breaches in a series of Melbourne hotels.Last month, Melbourne's quarantine hotels were identified as a key source behind the virus' terrifying escalation throughout the state which is currently at the beginning of a parliamentary inquiry. In a special investigation on Monday, ABC's Four Corners has exposed some of the conditions return travellers were put into upon arriving at some of the hotel quarantine facilities. Since March, all travellers returning from overseas have been made to isolate for 14 days in their hotel rooms.Speaking to the program, one guest who stayed at Rydges on Swanston in April said the conditions within the hotel room were "dirty", and that guards were not adequately protected while on duty.A police car sits outside the Rydges on Swanston hotel on July 14, 2020 in Melbourne, Australia. Photo / Getty Images"There were a couple of rooms that had bedbugs," the guest, Christine Cocks, said."The guards that didn't have their gowns on would be wearing gloves and masks. But that doesn't necessarily protect you. If you rub your face with a gloved hand and then after the glove is off, you scratch again, put it in your mouth, near your nose – you're away. There goes your infection."It is being argued at a parliamentary inquiry that a scandal over quarantine and security breaches in a series of Melbourne hotels is what helped create the city's predicament today – putting millions of Australians in stage 4 lockdown and hundreds losing their lives to the virus. As part of the investigation, Four Corners concluded the first case at Rydges was in fact a hotel staff member – not a guard as first thought. It is understood the worker completed cleaning jobs in the hotel. But within weeks, the initial case had spread to security guards working at the hotel, who were employed by private firm Unified.Several insiders said the use of private subcontractors, including Unified Security, were employed without medical training to run the system. This meant hired staff were not properly briefed on their role, or given personal protective equipment, and did not take the job as seriously as they should have. One security guard, named Peter, told the investigation that he was not told any detail about COVID-19 prior to starting his role at the Novotel on Collins in April, saying everything he knew about the virus he'd learnt "from television".Peter, who didn't want to be identified, said he felt unsafe because quarantine guests were ushered past him while going to their rooms – without masks or protective equipment."They don't have any protective gear; they don't have a mask. And they're not far from more than one foot from us," he said."I have a family waiting for me at home … I don't want to pass this disease on to them."In stunning video and photographs obtained by Four Corners, guests staying at an undisclosed hotel filmed unidentified guards sleeping on the job.The investigation, which will be aired on the ABC at 8.30pm on Monday, the same day as the public inquiry into Melbourne's bungled hotel quarantine began. Counsel Assisting, Tony Neal QC, confirmed the evidence over the next two days will reveal more about how the current outbreak can be traced back to overseas travellers quarantined in hotels. He said the fundamental question to be examined by the board of inquiry was who was running and who was accountable for the program.Unified Security, the company contracted by Rydges Hotel, have hired a lawyer to appear before the inquiry.Rydges and Melbourne Hotel Group are also legally represented along with a number of government departments. The hotel quarantine system did not include a frontline role for the Australian Defence Force nor Victoria Police, instead deciding to engage private security firms to guard the hotel occupants....
