Brothers Aiden Brink and Will Sparks both joined their respective lodges in the past couple of years. Each have become very active and spurred growth in their areas. They were both kind enough to join us to discuss their perspective on Odd Fellowship: what we get right, what we get wrong, and what we can do to build a solid future for our Order. Some of the answers may be surprising, especially to long-time members, but they are incredibly insightful and provide a very appealing pathway to future growth. Hint: newer members see a lot of value in our history and traditions! The Shoutout goes to *another* new Encampment, Faro Fraternal #70 in Miami, Florida. In the Odd Podge, Ainslie reflects on watching a new streaming drama through Odd Fellow eyes, Will cherishes some of his most recent Odd Fellow gifts, Mike announces his newest side project, Odd Fellows Today, Toby recounts the story of meeting listener Michael Crile of Four Creeks Lodge #94 of Visalia, CA during his recent vacation, and Aiden gives thanks to those who listened to him and Ray Jackson of Illinois in particular.

It's hard to believe, but in 1902 the school district put a convicted felon, fresh from serving hard time at the state pen, in charge of its grade-school kids. In 1988 the Muscles from Brussels, Jean-Claude Van Damme, appeared in his first leading role as Frank Dux, the first American fighter to win the Kumite. And as the end credits indicate this movie was based on the true events of Frank Dux life, who fought and won 329 matches between 1975 and 1980, was an undercover CIA operative who entered the Kumite to take down the Japanese mob, the Yakuza, and who with one arm tied behind his back beat up Chuck Norris. And while none of that may be true, it certainly won't stop us from loving Bloodsport and spending the next hour talking about it. So grab your ringside seat, place your bets, and get ready because today on Buzzn The Tower we talk all things Bloodsport. I'm Mo Shapiro and joining me as always, the Ray Jackson to my Frank Dukes, Max Sanders and with that…Kumite, Kumite, Kumite, Kumite!

Marisa speaks today with Joseph Pugliese, Uncle Ray's friend, longtime activist, and editor of Doin Time's recently featured book, Mapping Deathscapes: Digital Geographies of racial and Border Violence. Joseph gives a comprehensive introduction and historical context to Ray's life and work, beginning with his trauma as a child of the stolen generations driving his burning desire to achieve social justice. Joseph highlights Uncle Ray's extraordinary grasp and memory of complex legal cases, but importantly also the profound and heartfelt understanding he had for the human dimension of each and every case which makes his activism and legacy so powerful. Amongst the many topics discussed are his work in legislating family attendance for autopsies of Indigenous Deaths in Custody to ensure ceremony and respect, his strong history of trade unionism in Sydney, and his vast internationalist view of activism, from connecting with First Nations activists in North America to denouncing Israeli state violence in occupied Palestine. Tune in on Monday May 9 for part two of this special Uncle Ray Jackson Memorial program.
In our seventh episode, we reflected on Rest and Relaxation, both what we do and enjoy, and what God says about this topic. Yes we are called to work as though working for the Lord, but there is also the invitation and commandment to rest - what does this look like?In the opening dialog we answered some 'open questions' regarding 'important' facts from earlier episodes...The song "Take the Long Way Home" was written by Supertramp. The Fab Five (U of Mich basketball) are Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose, Chris Webber, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson. If you have input, feedback, or other things to request, please send us an email at:checkpoint@hillcrestcrc.comQuiet time scriptures we reviewed:Isaiah 55:1Exodus 34:5-7Proverbs 19:11James 5:12Each of us shared some of the things we like to do to rest and relax. These included: walking with our wife, bicycling with the guys, observing the Sabbath by worshipping and not working, family hikes together, taking a run after work, playing a simple game like FreeCell or watching a simple TV show, campfires, camping and last - but not least, going fishing. The disciples, after Jesus death and resurrection, got away for a while to fish. When done fishing, Jesus was waiting for them. Often we need to get away from our normal routine and look for Jesus to be waiting for us to connect in a new, renewing way. (John 21:3)Our soul needs God. God brings us to places where we can connect to Him and experience his restoration. We need to rest in Christ, he is faithful. (Psalm 23:1-2)God commands and invites us to rest, to observe the Sabbath. What is rest? It can be physical, or simply a break from our regular routine. The most important rest is rest for our souls. In Matthew 11:28-30 Jesus calls out to those who are 'weary and heavy laden' and explains the key to finding rest for our souls. The answer is being yoked to Jesus, to be hooked or connected to him. We wondered out loud, what if? What if I would only do what God says is right, how many things go away and I can truly rest. If I take out of my life things not of God and take on the things of God, how much trouble and turmoil in my life would fade away?We cannot do this on our own strength, but when we submit to God and live by the Spirit and not by the flesh, this is the way of God, of living in His kingdom that does bring a peace that passes understanding. This is the first step, getting out of the worldly rat race and focus on God and who he is calling you to be.FINAL THOUGHTSTake time to rest! Get connected with your Savior and King, your Lord and your God.Bottom LineOur hope is that this encourages you to think about the areas of being a godly man we have been discussing on this podcast where God wants YOU to grow. The purpose of our podcast is to help each other be better leaders, husbands and fathers for God's glory. Our discussions are based on elements from the Men's Ministry at Hillcrest Christian Reformed Church in Hudsonville, MI. For more information about us, check our website and hillcrestcrc.org.

Today's episode is brought to you by the letter "K" for Kumite (kung fu noises). The gang joins Jean-Claude Van Damme on his portrayal of Frank Dux and the fabled martial arts tournament. But let's be real here, the real star of the movie is the friendship Van Damme develops with Donald Gibb who plays Ray Jackson. If only Crispy and Salamandro could look into each others eyes and admit their feelings towards each other in the same way. The music you hear throughout the episode is brought to you by Cascading Failures, that one band Mario and Alexis are in but never promote. Look them up on bandcamp and maybe throw them a couple of shmeckles if you enjoy it. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/murdockmediare/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/murdockmediare/support

It's hard to believe, but in 1902 the school district put a convicted felon, fresh from serving hard time at the state pen, in charge of its grade-school kids. But the forgery and robbery he was convicted of may have been the least of his crimes. After surprising her husband with their third positive pregnancy test, the Jacksons began to prepare for life as a family of five. They both had learned so much about the birth process from their previous pregnancies. Danielle had become a certified doula and attended about 20 births in that capacity since her last personal birth. Things had changed, she'd seen a lot in sacred birth spaces. Some unnecessary, some necessary, and many simply inspiring. She decided to use her skills and resources to take the lead in a pregnancy that surprised her while caring for her own doula clients. She had helped numerous women to birth without fear but with knowledge of self and the physiological process of birth. Danielle chose to be supported by her fellow doulas of Restoring Our Own Through Transformation (ROOTT) and birth unmedicated with a midwifery team. Ray had a different vantage point as a father of two and having watched Danielle's growth as a woman. He was excited to welcome his first son and take on his role as a caregiver during the postpartum period. Ray was grateful to have the support of the doula team for prenatal appointments and home visits. Allowing him to relax and know that Danielle was well taken care of, and she was in good health. Fathers often have unspoken concerns. Ray had not anticipated how long they would labor at home or how things would go for trying an unmedicated birth after choosing epidurals for the first two births. Needless to say, he garnered a whole new perspective for the work his wife does with other families.Sponsors: Restoring Our Own Through Transformation (ROOTT) | reproductive justice organizationROOTT is a Black women-led reproductive justice organization dedicated to collectively restoring our well-being through self-determination, collaboration, and resources to meet the needs of women and families within communities.
