Operation Inglenook is an initiative by the Australian Border Force which claims to focus on identifying exploitation and potential victims of trafficking and modern slavery. This harmful - and unsuccessful - approach unfairly targets the sex industry, leading to invasive workplace raids, canceled visas, detention and deportation. This is very distressing for migrant sex workers, no matter their visa status. Operation Inglenook is a racist, violent campaign targeting Asian-migrant sex workers through workplace and border raids. Today's speeches are from a rally held on 17 April 2025 and are: Bee from Justice for our sisters, Penny who is a migrant sex worker, and a statement from the The Asian Migrant Sex Worker Advisory Group (AMSWAG).
On this week's program, we hear from Bee and Rory about the targeting of Asian-migrant sex workers, increased raids committed by Australian Border Force through Operation Inglenook, and the ongoing violence and surveillance of street-based sex workers. First, we'll hear a conversation with Bee on 3CR's Tuesday Breakfast. Bee is a migrant sex worker, outreach peer support worker for women of cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds for Vixen and AMSWAG (Asian Migrant Sex Worker Advisory Group) under the Scarlet Alliance. They are also a member of Justice for Our Sisters. This interview originally aired on Tuesday 15th April. We will then hear from Rory, a sex worker and peer support worker with Vixen who spoke at the action organised outside the Department of Home Affairs in Naarm on Thursday 17th April. This rally was organised by Vixen to demand an end to racist profiling of Asian-migrant sex workers at work and at the border; an end to the raids and to shut down Operation Inglenook; cops and Border Force out of sex worker spaces, and full decriminalisation for all sex workers, including street-based workers. Content warning: Listeners are advised that the following program includes descriptions of police raids and references to violence against sex workers. If you are a migrant sex worker in need of support, you can reach out to your local peer organisation. That's Scarlet Alliance for the peak body at www.scarletalliance.org.au or Vixen in so-called Victoria at www.vixen.org.au. The shooting set off panic and a 12-hour lockdown of the campus until the suspect was captured Monday. Students who were told to shelter in place beginning late Sunday described terrifying hours in hiding. While police searched for the gunman through the night, students sought safety in closets, dorm rooms, libraries and apartments. They listened to police scanners and tried to remember everything they were taught as children during active-shooter drills. The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. NCAAFB – Coach: Slain Virginia football players ‘were all good kids’ Three University of Virginia football players killed in an on-campus shooting are being remembered by head football coach Tony Elliott as “incredible young men with huge aspirations and extremely bright futures.” Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry were returning from a class trip Sunday night when authorities say they were killed by a fellow student. Marissa speaks with Max Costello from Victoria's Refugee Action Collective about a disturbing development regarding safety breaches by Australian Border Force. Refugee advocates who wrote to the Comcare regulator over alleged safety breaches by Australian Border Force are outraged that the reply came from ABF itself, clearing itself of any wrongdoing.Marissa then speaks with Anthony Kelly, from Melbourne Activist Legal Support. They talk about the class action against Victoria Police's use of capsicum spray and excessive force against protesters at the International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) in Melbourne in October 2019. Will we see accountability?
Australian Border Force officials searched more than 40,000 mobile phones, laptops and other devices at the border between 2017 and the end of 2021. ABF has broad powers to search travellers and ask for their passcodes. Reporter Josh Taylor talks to Jane Lee about what these powers are for and the difficulties in refusing these requests
Four years after they were removed from their home in a dawn raid by Australian Border Force officers, the Nadesalingam family has returned home to their adopted home town of Biloela. The family arrived in Biloela on Friday afternoon, where they were greeted by supporters, many of whom have campaigned for years for their release. Linus talks about his 11 day offshore passage from Noumea, New Caledonia to Cairns, Australia. The Australian Border Force engages in abusive tactics to harass cruising sailboat owners. If you are on a cruise ship or a plane you are treated like a tourist. If you are on a sailboat you will be targeted as a criminal by ABF which use a dozen officers to check in a boat with two people. They made my Australian crew member a prisoner on the boat and miss his hotel and plane flight for a day for no reason. Australia emulates the totalitarian policies of China, not the democratic governance of the United Kingdom. The ABF is a jobs program that wastes Australians' tax dollars and is destroying Australia's international tourism industry. I recommend steering clear of New Caledonia which is also hostile to international sailboat cruisers. In this bulletin, United States president Joe Biden says Russian leader Vladimir Putin can't remain in power; Australian Border Force says the death of a man in immigration detention will be investigated; and in sport, retiring tennis star Ash Barty hails her successor as women's World No.1 Iga Swiatek.
The state Government will double its order of 50 million rapid antigen tests for distribution to essential workers in the public workforce and vulnerable communities. Shocking details have emerged of Novak Djokovic's night of torment when he was taken into custody by Australian Border Force officers amid allegations he was pressured into accepting a notice before he could contact his legal team or Tennis Australia officials. Police will reapply for some of the toughest crime orders on members of the Hamzy and Alameddine families in light of the gang war exploding again this week with the slaying of Ghassan Amoun. And first-home buyers will have an easier path to ownership in 2022 due to a softening housing market and many are eyeing regional areas and outer Sydney suburbs to get their slice of the Aussie dream.
