In this episode of the Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show With Stugotz, Dan, Mike and Stu take us through the era following John Skipper's departure from ESPN leading up to just before the COVID-19 pandemic. In this time, a power shift is going on at ESPN as Jimmy Pitaro assumes the role of president after Skipper's departure. The crew shares how the shift in power affected the show's ability to discuss some of the hot-button political issues taking place during the second-half of the first Donald Trump administration. In this episode, you will hear Dan's comments in which he calls ESPN's policy about discussing political issues "cowardly" while Mike Ryan was at a show even in Fort Wayne, and the fallout that ensued. You will also hear from former ESPN radio executive, Traug Keller, about what went into the decisions ESPN made to be stricter about the content discussed on the show, as well as the infamous dinner he had with Dan and Dan's agent. Then, stick around for this week's supercut which includes legendary moments such as Billy Gil's home run call, corporate Michael, and the single most important thing the Falcons have to do to beat the Patriots. The future of our live TV viewing habits is ever-evolving: Every week, it seems, there's a new bundle. A new "skinny" bundle. A new merger. Is the media industry ready to help us find all the games we want to watch? Will there ever be one sports streaming service to rule them all? David Samson, John Skipper and Pablo pour one out for the streamer that would have included games from ESPN, Fox Sports and Turner Sports — and look ahead to what's next. As the show becomes fully entrenched in the lineup at ESPN, it is heading towards the launching pad that is about to take it to new heights. Before we get there though, the gang continues to struggle with the show just not feeling right. As a last gasp effort to get Dan back in his comfort zone, Mike Ryan makes a call to ESPN executives to take the show off television for two weeks and move back to the smaller studio at The Clevelander. As Mike Ryan says himself, this may have been the move that saved the show. After the break, the show comes out flying what the gang considers to be the golden era of content. Around the time of the studio change, the show is moved into the mid-day slot on ESPN Radio, making it arguably the biggest thing in sports radio at the time. You'll hear from Dan, Stu, Mike, Chris Cote, Old Money Charlie and even former ESPN President, John Skipper, about the show making the transition from Fusion to ESPNU and afternoons to mid days. Then, in line with the golden era of content, get ready for what is far and away the best supercut so far. Here are just some of the highlights: Bob Einstein on Rob Gronkowski, Alan Thicke on Tomas Hertl, Norm Macdonald watching the Draft, We Are The Lobos, Corn Elder and perhaps the most egregious Stugotz mistake in show history. Welcome to The Sporting Class! Meadowlark Media CEO John Skipper and Nothing Personal's David Samson are back with another episode with host of Pablo Torre Finds Out ... Pablo Torre! We've been on a year-long climb up the mountain top of the NBA broadcast rights deal journey and we've reached the peak. Inside the NBA is not going anywhere… except it will now be on ESPN starting next year. How did we get here? Why did Disney make this deal with Warner Bros. Discovery? Is this the end of the drama? This brings us back to a little trade that John Skipper had done back in 2005 and it's all about a cartoon rabbit! Negotiations, talent, agents, contracts: It's not fun, but a necessary part of the business. Stephen A. Smith is currently in talks for a new mega contract with ESPN. How is this getting worked out? The College Football Playoff is almost set and it's come with drama. The four-team playoff was a mess and it's out. The 12-team was supposed to be the best and of course it finds itself in more drama. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Welcome to model making, a new series from the Leaders Sport Business Podcast that analyses the flux across the global sports industry and asks, do we need a new commercial vision for sport? Are the business models that have sustained professional sport for so long at breaking point? And what are the solutions that sport's most innovative thinkers are endorsing? Hosted by Leaders Editorial Director James Emmett and Viagogo's International Lead Matt Drew, the three-part series puts sport's traditional revenue streams under the microscope. Where and why are media rights flatlining? Are sponsorship dollars under threat below the elite level? And are matchdays being maximised? To help them make sense of the shifting sands around them, the pair are joined by three illustrious guests: - John Skipper, formerly of ESPN and DAZN and the architect of some of the biggest rights deals in US TV history; - Simon Denyer, serial founder and former leader of DAZN, current leader of PEAK, and board member on a number of global properties including the WTA; - Zarah Al-Kudcy, the newly installed CRO at the Women's Professional League Ltd, and a commercial leader at Chelsea, Formula 1 and the ICC among many before that.
If you feel surrounded by sports on all sides, losing the battle to keep up with new leagues (hello pro pickleball?), athlete-influencers post-game podcasts, and who's getting paid what, you're not alone. Sports is swallowing media, and swallowing our lives. This week, Ben and Nayeema explore whether the sports boom is driven by culture or by commerce, and if this boom might be a bubble. To help figure it out, they bring on John Skipper, former President of ESPN and current founder and CEO of Meadowlark Media who makes a compelling case of American exceptionalism in sports, and the incentives of billionaires who own these teams. Finally they bring on Semafor business and finance editor Liz Hoffman for a blindspot from Silicon Valley: the rise of “founder mode.” If you have a tip or a comment, email us mixedsignals@semafor.com Find us on X: @semaforben, @nayeema @lizrhoffman or on Instagram @nayeemaraza Sign up for Semafor Media's Sunday newsletter: https://www.semafor.com/newsletters/media
The Groundsmen today host the doyen of the sport media sector. John Skipper, most famously of ESPN, talks about why sport explains the world and will always been of true value. Do not miss this one. Made possible by W3SV.
Domonique expresses his frustration over how David's "character" on The Sporting Class somehow makes John Skipper look like a socialist...and David agrees. Plus, we put a bow on the bat boy story that somehow ended with an appearance on late night TV. Then, David and Domonique lead a wide-ranging conversation on the LeBron James-Bronny James story with the Los Angeles Lakers. How much of this is nepotism and how much does that actually matter? Has this been a ruse by the Lakers and the James Family to circumvent the salary cap? Is it okay to use ad revenue as a deciding factor in personnel decisions? These questions get answered while Jess works on her F1 minute and Lucy doodles. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
